Delighted to have another copy

Thank you for reuniting me with the only diet book that ever worked for me. I had a copy of this book when it first came out in the mid-eighties and following it helped me to lose 60 pounds! Unfortunately, it got lost in multiple house moves and I've missed it often. The book arrived exactly when it was expected and in surprisingly good condition for a book published 31 years ago and out of print for years.. The pages are quite yellowed, but that's no surprise and certainly doesn't affect its readability. I certainly would not hesitate to buy another book from your shop!

the real way to eat and exercise

My doctor told me I had to lose 50 pounds. She told me to purchase this book, follow the instructions, and check back with her in one week. I was motivated, just by the scare of hearing I needed to lose 50 pounds. I bought the book, read it, and knew I could do it. Nothing fancy, just portions and guidelines for exercise. My doctor put me on 1200 calories for three months, then upped it to 1500 calories for 3 months. The book made it easy - no matter what plan you're on (1200 calories, 1500, 1800, 2100, 2400, etc) you will get 4 breads, 3 fruits, 2 dairy, 2 meats/proteins, 3 veggies and at least 5 fats/sugars. Every item they list in a category falls within a range of accepted calories, so you never have to count your calories - just choose an item. There is also a list of freebies (I like sugar free jello cups and sugar free popsicles). You get to tailor the diet to your tastes, too. I have to feel full, so instead of using one of my 3 servings of veggies for 1/2 cup of green beans, I usually went for the 1 cup of cabbage or 2 cups of lettuce. With fruit, I went for 3/4 cup of strawberries or 13 grapes instead of a small apple. If you love breads, you can trade in one of your fats/sugars for a serving of bread, or 2 portions of fruit, or 3 veggies. For exercise, I just got an exercise bike and rode it while reading my mail or watching television for 1/2 an hour. The first 5 minutes were hard, but the rest of the 30 minutes flew by. I checked in with my doctor each week, and the pounds fell off. I kept them off for 5 years. Get the book. Read it and stick to it. Most importantly, if you screw up, forgive yourself, put it in the past and move forward again. Good luck!

I've worn out my copy

This is my old standby diet when whatever current fad begins to fail. It is based on portion control and moderate daily exercise. My edition is from before the USDA Food Pyramid and therefore does not go hog wild with carbs. All foods are incorporated - there are no forbidden foods. Two of my friends who had never had weight problems before they stopped smoking used it successfully to lose the weight gain. I don't think much of the recipes, but the food lists and portions lists are extremely helpful. My copy has finally fallen apart after 18 years so I am looking for a "like new" copy.
