Classic
By Alan G. Kirk
Entertaining, delightful, wry. ------I'm done with my review but Amazon requires more words, so here they are. Stupid requirement. Anti-brevity. Annoying.

Fully Insured
By Arthur W Jordin
Preferred Risk (1955) is a standalone SF novel. It is set in the near future within Naples. The Company has merged with all the other insurance agencies. Now they have insured against war and control all the weapons.
In this novel, Thomas Wills is a Claims Adjuster in the Company. Tom had been married to Marianna, but she had died of leukemia.
Rena dell'Angela is an unmarried women in Naples. Her father had a claim against the Company.
Sam Gogarty is the Regional Director for the Naples Branch office of the Company.
Susan Manchester is a secretary and receptionist with the Company. She works at the Naples Branch office.
Luigi Zorchi is a folk hero of the Neapolitan people. He has collected on numerous claims from the Company, including multiple claims on the loss of his legs and arms.
In this story, Tom was flying over the Atlantic to Italy. He has an appointment in Naples with Gogarty. Yet he's is running late for his appointment with Gogarty.
The normal airport had been vaporized in the recent war between Naples and Sicily. The line at Customs had been slowed down by the man before him. The train from the airport was slow and overcrowded. Then he had been caught in the search for Zorchi.
Tom had been a close witness to Zorchi throwing himself in front of a train. Zorchi had lost both legs below the knee. Tom had been an hour late getting to the Naples Branch.
Gogarty was ready to go out to eat. He mentioned Zorchi to Tom, but changed the topic when the girls arrived. He takes Tom, Susan and Rena to an excellent restaurant.
There he orders a special meal. Tom tries to tell him about having only a class B ration card, but Gogarty says the meal is on the Company. Then Tom takes Rena home after the dinner.
Susan slips a folder into to pile on Tom's desk. It is Rena's case file, but Tom is too busy to read it. He has to handle a run of panicked claimants at the New Caserta office.
Then he interviews Zorchi about his claims. His questions irritate Zorchi. The man shows Tom the stubs of his legs as well as the boils and wens on his chest. He mentions the appendix that has been removed several time and regrows.
Then Tom reads Rena's case folder. Her father is stored at Anzio in life suspension. She has been classified as a class E uninsurable.
Tom goes out to speak with Rena. She admits that the case files are correct. Yet she disagrees about her father starting the war with Sicily.
This tale takes Tom to Anzio. There he talks to Zorchi and informs him of his rights. Zorchi agrees to go into the vaults.
Tom learns that Gogarty may soon be relieved. This story does not have any sequel. However, the authors have also written Gateway and Pstalemate.
Highly recommended for Pohl & del Rey fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange futures, indoctrinated persons, and a bit of romance. Read and enjoy!

Short comment
By Polymath
Last week I read this novel in its original serial format. I actually preferred it (no pun intended) to the similar, but more ballyhooed, "The Space Merchants" by Pohl, which I also read, a couple of months ago, in its paperback format. Both readings were my first for these stories, and both were enjoyable.
