As noble an effort as the 1978 film

With boys ages 7 & 5, I've been looking for a "storybook" version of The Lord of the Rings. This is the ONLY product out there, short of the Hear the Tape, See the Pictures, Read the Book Buena Vista version of the Rankin-Bass cartoons. I've purchased copies for my sons and nephew for Christmas, and I really like the effort (as much as I liked the cartoon movie). My only complaint is the same one I have for the film. It needs a second half. Note: even more than the movie, this book is geared for kids.

Beautiful images of a underrated classic. While it would be more insightful to have a behind the scenes book on the project, this book is still very enjoyable. The entire text is the actual film script from the 1978 cartoon.

A bit of a wasted opportunity

The format is small and the best images/stills are reproduced in thumbnails. The writing is just a schlocky adaptation of the story. There are a number of nice pics printed so they can be seen - but overall - a deliberate effort was made to deprive you of good images from the film. Good for collectors and completists - but otherwise pretty disappointing. Edit: Probably good for kids, as I believe was the intention. The large images are primarily of the characters. My main complaint is the tantalizing tiny reproductions of the great background paintings.
