William Goldman's modern fantasy classic is a simple, exceptional story about quests—for riches, revenge, power, and, of course, true love—that's thrilling and timeless.
Anyone who lived through the 1980s may find it impossible—inconceivable, even—to equate The Princess Bride with anything other than the sweet, celluloid romance of Westley and Buttercup, but the film is only a fraction of the ingenious storytelling you'll find in these pages. Rich in character and satire, the novel is set in 1941 and framed cleverly as an “abridged” retelling of a centuries-old tale set in the fabled country of Florin that's home to “Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passions.”

Amazon.com Review
The Princess Bride is a true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautifulest ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles."
Goldman frames the fairy tale with an "autobiographical" story: his father, who came from Florin, abridged the book as he read it to his son. Now, Goldman is publishing an abridged version, interspersed with comments on the parts he cut out.
Is The Princess Bride a critique of classics like Ivanhoe and The Three Musketeers, that smother a ripping yarn under elaborate prose? A wry look at the differences between fairy tales and real life? Simply a funny, frenetic adventure? No matter how you read it, you'll put it on your "keeper" shelf. --Nona Vero

PRAISE FOR THE PRINCESS BRIDE
"[Goldman's] swashbuckling fable is nutball funny . . . A 'classic' medieval melodrama that sounds like all the Saturday serials you ever saw feverishly reworked by the Marx Brothers." --Newsweek
"One of the funniest, most original, and deeply moving novels I have read in a long time." --Los Angeles Times
From the Publisher
Believe it or not, my future husband used this book to win my hand. I think giving it to me as a gift was his way of proving that he is a hopeless romantic, since the book is so wonderfully hopelessly romantic. So far, he's lived up to it! If you've only seen the movie, but love it, then you should definitely read the book. Also look for the 25th Anniversary (yes, it's really been that long) edition this Christmas--it includes the first chapter of the forthcoming sequel, Buttercup's Baby.

4.5 stars: The Princess Bride by William Goldman
By R. Miller
S. Morgenstern's classic tale of true love and high adventure. :)
Best bits: Quality writing. In it's own league, both in style and format, and it's so great. Story within story within story: telling his current experiences, plus reflections on when his father read him the story when he was 10, plus the tale itself (which you probably know by heart). There's a lot going on, but it works.
Issues: I've never understood what Westley sees in Buttercup that provokes his undying love, but to each his own. In Goldman's personal narrative bits, he's rather harsh about his wife and son, and broadly hints that he wouldn't mind pursuing another woman while married. The story itself is a bit down on women in general, but there's no sex, just a lot of violence: bloody sword fights, deadly wrestling matches, torture, encounters with dangerous animals, etc. Inigo's quest for vengeance is famous, but still leaves me a bit uncomfortable.

I Can See Why This Was Made Into A Movie
By Brian Gagnon
Looking back on this book, it has something for everyone. Action for those bored of constant talking, quiet scenes for those who want to get to know the characters, romance for those who want to fall in love or want to do so again, dark villains that the heroes have an axe to grind against. Not to mention some good mythology regarding the Dred Pirate Roberts. There's no grandfather reading this story to his grandson though. That was a movie invention. Hope that won't put you off of picking up this book though.

Delightful!
By JennyAGoGo
I re-read this book for the first time in years just recently. If you've only ever seen the movie, you should read the book (true statement for most movies, but this one especially so). There are parts not in the movie, and a whole backstory as to why the book was written. It's very clever and funny, but maybe a bit more PG-13 than PG if you are planning to read it with little kids. It really is a very well-crafted book.
