From Publishers Weekly
In pleasant prose fortified by good plotting, prolific author Michaels ( Texas Sunrise ) tells the story of Ruby Connors, who bolts from her hometown of Barstow, Penn., as soon as she graduates from high school, happily leaving behind her abusive father, servile mother and brutalized sister Opal. She gets a civil service job in post-WW II Washington, D.C., where she initially lives with her sister Amber and falls in love with serviceman Calvin Santos. Unable to believe in her feelings, insecure Calvin decamps after a trivial misunderstanding, and Ruby marries Marine Andrew Blue. She bears him two children, but he is a hostile, stern husband and father. Myriad years and countless plot developments go by; Ruby survives various crises, maintains a strong female friendship and uses money left by her beloved grandmother to help friends and sisters. Her final "season" finds her wealthy and free, but lonely and still searching for life's meaning until, in the closing pages, she decides to make herself useful to others. Though Ruby is not always likable and the author passes too quickly over some vital events in the narrative, readers should enjoy this bustling tale.

From Library Journal
With five million copies of her "Texas" series (e.g., Texas Sunrise , Ballantine, 1993) in print, Michaels needs no introduction to romance fans. Here, she traces the exceptional life and loves of Ruby Blue.

From Kirkus Reviews
A fat pancake of a novel, the author's second hardcover production tells the life story of one Ruby Blue--from an abused childhood and youth, to years as wife of a Marine, personal liberation, life in the world of industry, and her golden years in a rural retreat. Throughout the career of Ruby Blue, monster men abound. There's Papa George in their Pennsylvania home, a slasher, smacker, and wife beater, who requires that his daughters repay him, in bucks, for the cost of raising them. Then there's Ruby's husband, Andrew (met in those WW II glory days in D.C.), who is heavy on the verbal abuse and generally amoral. Ruby's lifelong friend Dixie is regularly slugged mercilessly by husband Hugo. Ruby's longtime true love, Calvin, is a gentle soul, but his wife, Eva, is as lethal as the men; fortunately for Calvin, she lacks the biceps. Ruby weathers life with Andrew at Marine bases and puts up with his callous treatment of their two children, but after Andrew admits to having gambled away their son's college money she finally decamps to New Jersey. Ruby soldiers on with Dixie, and their kitchen cookie business goes international in no time. As for the men, they'll get theirs: Papa George is Bobbittized with scalding grape jelly; the late Hugo's ashes get lost in traffic; and Ruby dumps Calvin. But Andrew sees the light. Glop. However, bear in mind the author's smashing success in paperback, including her Texas saga (5 million sold). -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Unsatisfying and UN-romantic
By Awesome America
While best-selling author, John Grisham, can write books depicting tough and hardened characters in dangerous situations with nary a cuss word, Fern Michaels seems unable to express any type of emotion without cussing. In this book, Ms. Michaels packs in every four-letter word she knows and proceeds to overuse them in every one of her characters' diologue (except the priest at the homeless shelter). Makes the reader feel your mind has been drug through the sewer.

Although this book is touted as "romantic", the truth is that Ruby, the main character, never understands or discerns true love at all. Her relationships with men, relatives and women friends are all precarious and superficial. I found the love scenes to be so shallow and unemotional that I wonder if Fern Michaels has never experienced deep love in her own life?

Ruby begins life a victim of an abusive father. I found myself hoping she would rise above her past -- but her choices backfired and left her emotionally destitute. Instead of forsaking a life maimed by the vices of her parents, Ruby plunged into a whole new set of vices and reaped the consequences.

The end of the book strives to leave the reader on a happy note -- that Ruby has found new vision for her senior citizen years as an animal rights activist -- but it is a real stretch to believe this newfound "cause" will bring her lasting fulfillment. What Ruby was looking for -- and never found -- was love.

Several times, Ruby began to reach out to God, but never quite made the jump. Unrealistically, Fern Michaels has Ruby (who is a smoker and a bucket mouth, separated from her husband, estranged from her daughter and sisters, in a five-year affair with a married man) begin to teach a weekly Sunday School class. Throughout the book, Ruby is portrayed as knowing next to nothing about God and the minute she returns to church after a 40-year hiatus, she is immediately qualified to teach others???

This book had potential, but proved very, very disappointing.

Real Disappointment!
By shatzy
At this point in my life I have read every book that Fern Michaels has had published and this is the only one I have not enjoyed reading. I pre-order every one of her books as I don't want to miss a one. If this had been the first book I had read of hers I would not have finished the book nor ever read another one by her. I was completely disappointed and felt it was really not up to her writing skills and I do not remember reading in her books so much bad language.
I do hope we will not see another book like this in her future. It really makes me wonder what is going on in her life.

You be the judge
By Texas Nana
Honestly, I didn't enjoy this book as much as other Fern Micharls books. I guess I got started on the Sisterhood series which I found difficult to put down, this one not so much. It was a good read and true to the title, Seasons of Her Life, but I would have liked a more conclusive ending. That's just my opinion.
