this is the thing my people do not know
By doomsdayer520
This intriguing novel from 1937 is long out of print, but it often appears on lists of "old classics" or "lost masterpieces" for the horror genre, and it seems to have an informed cult following. I've even seen this book on lists for the best old science fiction or fantasy. That's not totally accurate, but it indicates the sheer cross-genre strength and appeal of William Sloane's writing. He only wrote a few books, which have been forgotten by the mainstream, but this one illustrates his great skills at compelling prose and disconcerting themes. The story is a masterpiece of slowly-building dread, with the best elements of horror and mystery. There is even a subtle sci-fi influence, as Sloane came up with an incredible inhuman evil, in the character of the beautiful but cold Selena, which was informed by Einstein's theory of relativity and other then-current scientific breakthroughs. (Interestingly, Einstein was still around when this book was written, and is referred to as a contemporary personage.) Beyond the horror stylings at its core, this book is a bit difficult to categorize, and that's what makes it so good. Track this lost masterpiece down if you can. [~doomsdayer520~]

THANX, JIM AND MIKE!!!
By s.ferber
If it weren't for James Cawthorn and Michael Moorcock's indispensable overview volume entitled "Fantasy: The 100 Best Books," I probably would never have heard of "To Walk the Night" (1937), and would thus have been deprived of a wonderful read. Having read it, though, it seems to me that this, William Sloane's first novel, could just as easily have gone on someone's Top 100 Horror, Mystery OR Sci-Fi list, as this terrific book has elements of all those categories mixed in.
The tale concerns two young men who visit their alma mater and discover one of their old professors murdered...burnt to a crisp by some mysterious flame. One of the two ex-students falls in love with the dead professor's widow, a very mysterious woman with cold and emotionless qualities. They eventually marry, and this is the point where the book really takes off. The reader will never guess the background of the lady in question, or why she evinces such unusual mental powers, and why she seems to be an outsider everywhere she goes. This is certainly NOT your traditional murder mystery! The novel is beautifully written by Mr. Sloane; it's hard to believe that this is his first book. It's an extremely suspenseful page-turner that does not disappoint. Once the reader finishes this book, he/she will doubtless feel compelled to seek out William Sloane's only other book, "The Edge of Running Water," which, sadly enough, like "To Walk the Night," is also inexplicably out of print. Anyway, my thanks to Cawthorn and Moorcock for turning me on to a really excellent book. I advise others to seek it out.

A great little, creepy blend of SF and horror, exceedingly well done
By James Kenney
This is a great little, creepy blend of SF and horror, exceedingly well done. The horror is psychological and the tension is palpable all the way through. Who is this mystery woman, or perhaps I should ask, what is she? The protagonist is a warm, naïve, normal man confronted with something out of the Twilight Zone. As he, and his best friend's father try to resolve why his friend committed suicide so seemingly casually, the sense of anticipatory dread deepens with every page. More than the story, it is the mood it evokes that takes center stage, which is an unusual quality for a book to have. Haunting, eerie and unforgettable. If you like this one, be sure to read his other masterpiece, The Edge of Running Water, which, if anything, is even creepier.

Outstanding, easy to read and follow color guides
By A Customer
"Color Me Beautiful" is a terrific way to be introduced into the world of make-up colors and other fashion techniques. I read it as though it were a novel, and, after learning the colors that are right for me and practicing the techniques, gave my new face, whch had been make-up free for about 20 years, a trial run. The response has been amazing. Ms. Jackson's focus of the application of make-up is to apply it in a way that it is not noticeable. She gives examples of people who have used the techniques she describes. I have had experiences similar to those who are exemplified in the book. Though the book is primarily about make-up and it's application, Ms. Jackson also touches on hair, nails and fragrance. She gives short, simple tips that add to the make-up regime and are easy to work with. With her seasonal color chart, the reader can hardly miss both looking and feeling beautiful. The finishing touch of the book is Ms. Jackson's brief discussion of inner beauty. The combination of inner peace, feeling good about yourself, and the beauty created by the art of applying make-up equals a happy, friendly, and beautiful woman. Thank you, Carole Jackson, for writing such a wonderful book.

Ringworld Throne, by Larry Niven

Come back to the Ringworld . . . the most astonishing feat of engineering ever encountered.  A place of untold technological wonders, home to a myriad humanoid races, and world of some of the most beloved science fiction stories ever written!

The human, Louis Wu; the puppeteer known as the Hindmost; Acolyte, son of the Kzin called Chmeee . . . legendary beings brought together once again in the defense of the Ringworld. Something is going on with the Protectors. Incoming spacecraft are being destroyed before they can reach the Ringworld.  Vampires are massing. And the Ghouls have their own agenda--if anyone dares approach them to learn.

Each race on the Ringworld has always had its own Protector. Now it looks as if the Ringworld itself needs a Protector. But who will sit on the Ringworld Throne?

"Niven's work has been an intriguing and consistent universe, and this book is the keystone of the arch. . . . [His] technique is wonderfully polished, his characters and their situations are nicely drawn . . . wraps up (maybe) a corner of a very interesting universe."

Amazon.com Review
In Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers Larry Niven created Known Space, a universe in the distant future with a distinctive and complicated history. The center of this universe is Ringworld, an expansive hoop-shaped relic 1 million miles across and 600 million miles in circumference that is home to some 30 trillion diverse inhabitants. As in his past novels, Niven's characters in The Ringworld Throne spend their time unraveling the complex problems posed by their society.

From Publishers Weekly
An honored SF writer returns to his best-known creation: the artificial world, built far from Earth by aliens over a half million years ago, in the form of a ring 600 million miles in diameter, hosting an astonishing multitude of inhabitants and cultures. This third fictional voyage to the Ringworld (after Ringworld, 1970, which won both the Hugo and the Nebula for best SF novel of that year, and Ringworld Engineers, 1980) offers two stories crowded into one. A motley array of hominid inhabitants are seeking to defeat a plague of vampires. Meanwhile, returning hero Louis Wu is battling what effectively is a plague of Protectors (superbeings common to many Niven novels) whose rivalries threaten Ringworld's existence. The battle against the vampires is the more exciting of the two stories, filled with action, scenes of the Ringworld and explorations of ritualistic interspecies sex. Wu's pursuit of the Protectors displays Niven's deft hand at portraying aliens, but the dialogue that fills in the backstory slows the narrative. Niven still ranks near the top of the SF field, but this outing is likely to satisfy determined Ringworld fans more than other readers.

From Library Journal
Vampires gather, the Protectors interfer with other species, and someone is destroying incoming spacecraft, forcing Louis Wu to return to become Ringworld's Central Protector. The glossary, cast of characters, and Ringworld parameters orient new readers to the series (Ringworld and The Ringworld Engineers). Highly recommended for sf collections.

A pointless, directionless sequel
By RansomOttawa
Larry Niven's Ringworld (1970) is one of the truly great SF novels. A crew of four, comprising Louis Wu, a cynical, 200-year-old man; Teela Brown, a young woman bred for luck; Speaker-to-Animals, an aggressive, cat-like Kzin; and Nessus, a Pierson's Puppeteer, a technologically advanced race whose highest virtue is cowardice. The four of them go exploring on a recently discovered artifact: a gigantic ring a million miles wide and as big around as Earth's orbit.
The sequel, The Ringworld Engineers (1980), starts twenty years later, with Louis Wu and Speaker (now known as Chmeee) returning to the Ringworld with the Hindmost, the deposed leader of the Puppeteers, to find a supposed transmutation device that the Hindmost thinks will help restore him to power. Along the way they discover various alien civilizations, Vampires (non-sentient, blood-eating hominids), and Ghouls (eaters of the dead who trade in information). They also learn that the orbit of the Ringworld has become eccentric and it will destroy itself in a matter of years unless they can save it.
And then . . . there's The Ringworld Throne, where the only mystery yet to solve is, apparently, "Who are you, and what have you done with the real Larry Niven?" To say that Throne is a disappointing sequel is an understatement.
The story picks up about a year after The Ringworld Engineers leaves off. Louis Wu and his motley crew are still stranded on the Ringworld after human-turned-Pak-protector Teela buried their spaceship under tons of lava. Unfortunately, Niven has changed a major premise of the last book. Engineers ended with an unthinkable moral dilemma: whether to allow the Ringworld and its trillions of occupants to be destroyed, or save it at the cost of several hundred million lives. This should weigh mighty heavily on Louis Wu's mind, but Niven lets him off the hook: the Hindmost announces that he could control the Ringworld's meteor defenses more precisely than anticipated, and thus was able to minimize the deaths. Had this been revealed at the end of Engineers it would be a hideous deus ex machina. As it is, it's just very sloppy writing; Niven conveniently no longer has to deal with a more complex protagonist.
From here, Throne is basically two intertwined but generally unrelated stories. The first deals with an infestation of Vampires. Louis Wu is legendary on the Ringworld for once boiling an ocean to destroy a field of mirror sunflowers (which kill their prey by focusing sunlight on it and burning it). The resulting cloud cover cut off their light. However, one unintended consequence of this feat is a never-ending overcast sky, ideal for the spreading of Vampires. This, Niven gets right; all actions, however noble, may have unintended side effects that are not so good. The resulting battle between the locals and the Vampires drives about two-thirds of the novel's action.
It's unfortunate that the vast majority of this action involves neither the principal characters nor the mysteries of the Ringworld itself. The appeal of the Ringworld novels is directly proportional to the amount of time Louis Wu spends exploring it. Instead we are treated to four or five different species of hominids comprising thirty-odd interchangeable individuals with unpronounceable names, alternately fighting vampires and "rishing" with each other (i.e. inter-species sex for the sake of binding contracts or forging friendships). It's monotonous, and in the end, there's no payoff. No more of the Ringworld's mysteries are revealed.
Meanwhile, Louis Wu and the Hindmost are investigating why the Ringworld's remaining Pak protectors are destroying incoming ships and interfering with species other than their own. This part of the novel is completely incomprehensible, and I won't even attempt to explain what goes on. It doesn't help that the majority of the action is viewed through telescopes, communication devices, and so forth. Finally, we get to follow the principal characters around, and the story is a mess.
This novel reveals nothing new about the mysteries of the Ringworld, nor does it develop the characters or the series' plot any further. If Ringworld's Children can't make sense of all this, then sadly one of the great hard-SF world ends not with a bang, but a whimper.

Niven confirms your suspicions
By Mindme
The original Ringworld left a number of unanswered question that Ringworld Engineers attempted to answer. But by the end of Engineers one got the sneaking suspicion that Niven had pretty much exhausted his store of ideas for this world. Ringworld Throne only manages to confirm your suspicions that Ringworld is played out as a theme.

Engineers did leave one wonderful hook: the kzin plans to conquer earth. What is an earth conquered by the kzinti like? The book starts off with the Louis and the cat man sailing to the Ringworld earth to fulfill his dream but then the book veers off to follow the trials and tribulations of a caravan of boring Ringworld denizens. It becomes Ringworld meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Ten chapters in you begin to wonder why he wrote this book. People tramp around with little direction and kill vampires. Every third page one finds a little discussion on interspecies sex. You begin to wonder when Niven stopped being an innovative thinker and became a dirty old man, sweaty palms on a typewriter thinking sci fi fan boys still want this stuff. Newsflash, Lar. The fan boys have moved on to much "better" Japanese tentacle sex magna.

It's bad stuff from an author who should know better. It reads like Niven outsourced the whole project to Kevin J Anderson and never rises above Anderson's dial-a-novel method of cranking out bad sci fi.

Even One Star Is Too Much for This Awful Book
By A Customer
I first read Ringworld 31 years ago, in the first edition that has Earth rotating in the wrong direction, and have reread it at least half a dozen times since then, each time with enormous pleasure. Today I see no reason to change my judgment that it is one of the 3 or 4 best science-fiction novels ever written.
If it were the only book Larry Niven had ever written, he would be remembered for it the way Walter Miller is remembered for A Canticle for Lieberwitz. But he followed it up the following year with Protector, which is nearly as good. And over the years he's written dozens of excellent short stories, especially those in Neutron Star.
Ten years after Ringworld, Niven wrote a belated sequel, Ringworld Engineers, which seemed curiously lifeless compared to the first one but which was still a competent, even interesting, job of carrying on where the first one left off. No one will ever argue that it is even one of the 500 best SF books ever written, but it was intelligent, intelligible, and added some interesting new ideas to the original Ringworld concept.
Then, seventeen years or so after Ringworld Engineers, Niven wrote (or programmed) this miserable third book in the series. The writing is so desultory, so ambiguous, so unclear, along with most of the action, that you actually begin to wonder if maybe he punched a number of coordinates into a super-intelligent writing program and then sat back to let it do the rest.
There are so many things wrong with this as a piece of fiction that I won't bother to enumerate them -- most of the other reviewers here have already done so. What I will say is this: if you haven't already read BOTH of the earlier Ringworld books, perferably several times, this book will make absolutely no sense at all. Even with the other books fresh in your memory it will STILL be difficult to understand, so cursory is the writing, the plotting, the description of characters and motivation. The last 20 pages or so, which describe an epic battle between various mysterious characters high on the edge of the Ringworld, are so opaque as to defy comprehension. Who is doing what to whom, and why?
And who cares, for that matter...?
It's a terrible shame -- at his best (in my own opinion, before he fell under the baleful influence of Jerry Pournelle and the apparently irresistible pleasures of collaboration), Larry Niven was a GREAT science fiction writer. But this tedious book hardly deserves one star --...
Let's hope that this is the low point of his career....

Amazon.com Review
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is a book that most people think they remember and almost always get more or less wrong. Ridley Scott's film Blade Runner took a lot from it, and threw a lot away. Wonderful in itself, the film is a flash thriller, whereas Dick's novel is a sober meditation. As we all know, bounty hunter Rick Deckard is stalking a group of androids who have returned from space with short life spans and murder on their minds--where Scott's Deckard was Harrison Ford, Dick's is a financially strapped municipal employee with bills to pay and a depressed wife. In a world where most animals have died, and pet keeping is a social duty, he can only afford a robot imitation, unless he gets a big financial break.

The genetically warped "chickenhead" John Isidore has visions of a tomb-world where entropy has finally won. And everyone plugs in to the spiritual agony of Mercer, whose sufferings for the sins of humanity are broadcast several times a day. Prefiguring the religious obsessions of Dick's last novels, this book asks dark questions about identity and altruism. After all, is it right to kill the killers just because Mercer says so? --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
In Dick's futuristic dystopian novel, life has become a tenuous existence for those who have stayed behind after the war and exodus to other planets. Rick Deckard struggles as a bounty hunter in San Francisco to destroy a new breed of androids nearly undetectable to humans. However, he finds himself battling with empathy for the supposed lifeless beings—especially when he must team up with one to achieve his goal. Dick blends the detective story with science fiction and a bit of philosophy. Brick is a perfect match for one of Dick's most memorable novels. He maintains Deckard's grittier disposition and a range of other human and inhuman characters, but also provides the inflection and morose tones found in the story's more somber moments. Not all of his female voices are completely believable. However, one of Brick's most gifted abilities lies in his quivering voice used throughout for emphasis and mood. A Del Rey paperback. (Nov.)

From the Publisher
The classic novel behind the cult film classic directed by Ridley Scott. As atmospheric and even more compelling than the film. A dystopian tour de force.

Things Pretending to be People
By J. Whelan
This anti-robot novel is oft misunderstood by those who come to it with expectations formed by the pro-robot movie. The novel is essentially a paranoid fantasy about machines which pretend to be people. The pretense is so horrifyingly effective that a bounty hunter engaged in the entirely necessary task of rooting out and destroying these monsters finds that his own humanity has become imperiled.

The novel "DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP?" re-titled "BLADE RUNNER" to tie it to the Ridley Scott film loosely based on it, remains available under either title (and with separate entries on AMAZON), but it is the same book. The film studio wanted to market a "novelization" of the film, but PKD adamantly refused to authorize this, forcing them to instead market his original novel under the film's title. Good move, Phil!

This decision, however, has led to confusion and/or disappointment when readers approach the novel with expectations formed by the film. Many reviewers here (whether they like the book, the film, or both) have commented on how different they are. Few seem to realize, however, the extent that they are in direct and fundamental conflict. Some praise the book for tearing down the distinction between man and machine or promoting other nihilistic views and pro-robot messages that the author would have found abhorrent. Others pan it for lack of focus, or for otherwise failing to promote the film's pro-robot agenda as effectively as the film did.

The book is anti-robot and pro-human, and seeks to uphold the distinction between robot and human, and between illusion and reality, in the face of a most-insidious challenge. The common man is celebrated for his basic decency -- specifically his capacity for basic empathy and compassion -- and the robots are deplored for their complete lack of these qualities. In the book, even a "chickenhead" (a mentally retarded human mutant) is infinitely more valuable than the smartest robot.

The film was pro-robot and anti-human, promoting the idea that a compelling illusion is equivalent to reality. It glorifies the android as a sort of superman ("more human than human") -- stronger, faster, more beautiful, more intelligent, -- who seem poised to inherit the future on a dying Earth. The film even seems to admire the robots for their ruthlessness.

The book makes Deckard (the protagonist) human, and loyal to humans. The film has Deckard switch sides and join the robots. Indeed, in the film (not the book) Deckard may himself be a robot (the latter is never made explicit, but director has made clear it is what he intended). This means that, in the FILM, there are virtually no sympathetic human characters -- those characters who suggest that a man is worth more than a computer program are portrayed as bigots.

In PKD's view, the androids are unquestionably monsters who must be destroyed. The irony, and the central problem posed in the novel, is that their ability to SEEM human (which,, in the NOVEL, is never more than meticulously-programmed fakery), means that those who must destroy robots risk damage to their own humanity in the process. Thus, the author approves of Deckard's wife, whose sympathy for the "poor andys" is evidence of her humanity, while still approving of Deckard's assignment.

In the novel, the robots' increased ability to fool the VK test is merely an advance in programmed mimicry of human test responses. The film, on the other hand, treats the improved performance on the VK test as evidence that the robots are truly "human". But the film's robots do not demonstrate compassion in any meaningful way. The agenda of the film is NOT so mcuh to show that robots are as compassionate as humans, but rather to show that humans are as ruthless as robots (as evidenced, mainly, by their willingness to kill robots). This agenda is eerily similar to that of the TV androids near the end of the novel, who set out to expose human empathy as a myth.

In the novel, the title question must be answered in the negative. Androids DON'T care about other creatures. It is humans who have the capacity care about other creatures -- ironically, even about androids -- even electric sheep.

So many, even among the author's admirers, have missed the novel's true focus that it may be best to defend my interpretation with a quote from the author himself, made shortly before his death (quoted in the book "Future Noir"):

"To me, the replicants are deplorable. They are cruel, they are cold,
they are heartless. They have no empathy, which is how the
Voight-Kampff test catches them out, and don't care about what happens
to other creatures. They are essentially less-than-human entities.

"Ridley, on the other hand, said he regarded them as supermen who
couldn't fly. He said they were smarter, stronger, and had faster
reflexes than humans. 'Golly!' That's all I could think of to reply
to that one. I mean, Ridley's attitude was quite a divergence from my
original point of view, since the theme of my book is that Deckard is
dehumanized through tracking down the androids. When I mentioned
this, Ridley said that he considered it an intellectual idea, and that
he was not interested in making an esoteric film."

Total commitment
By Stanley Allen
Other SF writers have ideas; Philip K. Dick had visions. In fact, all of his visions may be said to be part of a single Uber-vision, a life-long attempt to construct a picture of the world and to ask meaningful questions about it. Most of his SF novels were different "takes" on this vision and explorations of those questions. To say, as so many people have done (including Dick himself), that his themes are "what is reality" and "what is human", is to touch only on the surface of the problems he was grappling with. It is necessary to understand how thoroughly Dick lived with his vision of life to know what his explorations meant, especially if one wishes to grasp their emotional center.

Take this novel for instance (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?). One could read it as if it were an ordinary SF novel and be fascinated by its "ideas", such as androids with false memories or the economy of real-animal trade in a post-apocalyptic setting -- in the same way that some fans of the "Star Trek" shows are interested in the structure of the Federation, the nature of the Borg, etc. But Dick's ideas are nothing more than access points to his larger vision, and the novel has some interesting little conduits that can take you there.

One thing of note (that few notice) is the idea of the "Penfield mood organ" which triggers an argument between Deckard and his wife in the opening chapter. Apparently one selects a desired emotional state and "dials in" settings to send one's brain the electrical signals that create that emotion, such as "pleased acknowledgment of husband's superior wisdom in all matters". The gadget is obviously named after Wilder Penfield, 20th century pioneer in brain mapping research. (A variant of this idea was used later in another of Dick's robot-or-man novels, the neglected We Can Build You.) Significantly, the device "frames" the novel, referenced again during the last scene. Such a device is the least outlandish piece of "science fiction" that the novel contains, since it is based on real science. And that fact roots the other speculations of the novel, however wild, in a very real and pressing contemporary question: if our moods and attitudes can be manipulated via electrical currents, then... what are we?

Another fascinating aspect of the story is the quasi-religious figure named Mercer. Mercer speaks at times with words like those of Christ, at other times with Zen riddles and self-contradiction. He offers empathy without salvation, salvation without truth, a truth through lies. When he is exposed as a fraud (when the set for the Mercer films is "subjected to rigorous laboratory scrutiny"), he admits it but insists that it does not detract from his validity. Mercerism is the only hint of transcendence offered by the novel, which raises the question: if such transcendence is exposed as fraudulent, then... what can be our transcendence?

The devastation that Deckard experiences in the end is a reflection of Dick's own emotional response to the conundrums of life as he saw it. That's because his vision was never an abstract or academic construct, an intellectual game without consequences -- it was always a life-or-death matter for him. And so it is for us, because Dick's true theme is neither ontology nor human identity, but the value of our existence, our origin and our fate, our relationships to one another and to God.

It's life, Rick, but not as we know it...
By A Customer
Sometimes one wonders why some people even bother to read. If you are a fan of the movie Blade Runner, and you are a little disapointed by this book, then shame on you. You shouldn't be reading books in the first place then! Rarely can movies capture all the themes and ideas of a book, and rarely can books capture the artistic cinematography of film. The two media are separate. Treat them as such.
What Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? are about is the routine of police bounty hunter Rick Deckard. His job is to hunt down and "retire" fugitive androids. But what the movie only scratched the surface of is WHY those androids are fugitives. Fans of the character of Data from Star Trek, or of the computer Mike from Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress will find the familiar theme of what it is that defines the difference between artificial intelligence and artificial life.
This is the realization that Deckard comes to and must deal with: these androids are not mere machines with off-switches, they are living creatures, aware of their own existence and their own mortality. In the post-nuclear holocaust world that Deckard exists in, humans define life by their ability to feel empathy. Empathy for the lives of each other, empathy for the lives of the remaining animal species of earth decimated by fallout, or empathy for artificial life. Eventually, Deckard questions his own ability to feel empathy, and therefore, his own humanity. For if being alive is about feeling empathy, then how can he truly be alive without feeling empathy for the living machines whose job it is for him to kill.
In the film version, Rutger Hauer's performance as one of the androids briefly captured the theme of the book, but it was never really explored and was instead sacrificed for artistic license. If you were intrigued by special effects, skip this book and rent Terminator 2. If you were intrigued by the question of artificial intelligence and artificial life, then you may want to ask if androids really DO dream of electric sheep.

Required reading about the Pacific War, the nature of Japan, being human
By Amazon Customer
The other reviewers have eloquently stated the case. This is a book you will read and re-read throughout your life. It is first and foremost an incredible eyewitness account of the Pacific War by a ship captain who was intimately involved in many of the key small battles of the war (the major battles were settled by air power, not his area). It is one of the best written war accounts to come out of any nation.

Secondly, it provides an unique insight into the Japanese at the time that has relevance over the entire 19th and 20th centuries, explaining such things as the origin of the Japanese navy in imitation of the American and British navies...which can easily be taken as a model for the industrial imitation leading up to Japanese economic superpower status by the 1980s.

Finally, Hara is a great autobiographist who shares his heart, displays his heroism and intellect, but does not fail to describe his weaknesses. Whenever there is a conflict, war or political or business or social, it is good to remember the other side is human too.

Japanese WWII Destroyer Captain
By William Garrison Jr.
In this book (the correct title is JAPANESE DESTROYER CAPTAIN), Captain Hara (not Harra) discusses how he commanded a Japanese destroyer in all of the major Pacific sea conflicts: Empress Augusta Bay, Coral Sea, the invasion of the Philippines, Guadalcanal, Savo Island, and Midway. While on a re-supply mission through Blackett Straight in August 1943, upon noticing a fire-ball explosion near the destroyer "Amagiri" in front of his destroyer "Shigure", he ordered for his ship's crew to shoot at Lt. J.F. Kennedy's sinking PT-109. He provides a most harrowing description -- as commander of cruiser Yahagi -- how he barely survied its sinking alongside the ill-fated battleship Yamato on their suicide mission to attack the U.S. forces invaiding Okinawa. He details his training of the pilots of suicide motorboats (Shinyo: "ocean shaker") that were designed to ram Allied warships approaching Japan. After I wrote to him, he sent me an autographed photograph of himself in 1968 -- a fine keepsake from one of the luckiest Japanese destroyer commanders to have survived so many desperately fought WWII sea battles. His 312-page book was published by Ballantine Books, initially in 1961.

Amazon.com Review
A much-needed update to the classic companion to Anne McCaffrey's canonical novels and numerous short stories about Pern, this book includes a few recipes, information about knitting patterns, Craft and Hold badges, and more. As a reference, it is marred by the lack of cross-referencing within the book, although there is an index, and by the lack of scales with the drawings of various animals and places. It will be invaluable to readers like me who can't recall just where they read that name before, or what Weyr a rider is from, or where that small Hold is, and it provides a useful overview of the high points of Pernese history--though it's no substitute for the pleasure of reading the stories!

Sure to be a hit with the many fans of McCaffrey's mythical world of Pern. All sf collections will need it.-- MR

The Great Book
By A Customer
This book is the best source of pern info you can buy in a book. It gives backround information on almost all aspects of pern, and helped clear up some details I didn't understand. Two thumbs up, a must for any dragonlover.

OK I guess....

Has some marginally interesting tidbits, but on the whole I'd rather see more maps, diagrams of the Hold and Weyr layouts, etc. A lot of the stuff covered here is already covered in "Dragonsdawn" and in other similar short stories. I did enjoy the short story on F'lessan, although having read "The Littlest Dragonboy" already, the novelty of the idea of Impression is diminished. Why not write on something different?
And what is with some of the portraits throughout the book? Menolly looks downright goofy, Jaxom looks....WEIRD.... and Lessa looks kinda gaunt. There are several other drawings of "anonymous" people that are much better, what gives!

I see that Amazon.com has merged the reviews . . .

. . . of both editions of this book onto a single site, so let me be clear from the outset that I am reviewing the First edition, published in 1989.

I have been a fan of the Pern universe since receiving several of the novels as gifts for Christmas in 1988. I've since read all the books; most of them more than once.

I found "The Dragonlover's Guide to Pern" to be a very good -- but not excellent companion source. Like any guide or atlas to a fictional world, every detail is not going to suit every person. The material does not cover several of the later books (though there are seeds of ideas which the alert reader will recognize again in later books.) (Hence the need for the 2nd edition).

For me, the single greatest lack in this volume was that the illustrations were all black-and-white. As detailed descriptions of heraldic devices were given -- it would have been nice to actually see them in color! Likewise with the dragons and fire-lizards!

Overall, though, I found this to be a useful and worthy effort -- especially for persons like myself who are greatly interested in "deep background" of stories.

Recommended.
