The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley, by Malcolm X, Alex Haley, Attallah Shabazz

ONE OF TIME’S TEN MOST IMPORTANT NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

With its first great victory in the landmark Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, the civil rights movement gained the powerful momentum it needed to sweep forward into its crucial decade, the 1960s. As voices of protest and change rose above the din of history and false promises, one voice sounded more urgently, more passionately, than the rest. Malcolm X—once called the most dangerous man in America—challenged the world to listen and learn the truth as he experienced it. And his enduring message is as relevant today as when he first delivered it.

In the searing pages of this classic autobiography, originally published in 1964, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and anti-integrationist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement to veteran writer and journalist Alex Haley . In a unique collaboration, Haley worked with Malcolm X for nearly two years, interviewing, listening to, and understanding the most controversial leader of his time.

Raised in Lansing, Michigan, Malcolm Little journeyed on a road to fame as astonishing as it was unpredictable. Drifting from childhood poverty to petty crime, Malcolm found himself in jail. It was there that he came into contact with the teachings of a little-known Black Muslim leader renamed Elijah Muhammad. The newly renamed Malcolm X devoted himself body and soul to the teachings of Elijah Muhammad and the world of Islam, becoming the Nation’s foremost spokesman. When his conscience forced him to break with Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity to reach African Americans across the country with an inspiring message of pride, power, and self-determination.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X defines American culture and the African American struggle for social and economic equality that has now become a battle for survival. Malcolm’s fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American Dream, and the inherent racism in a society that denies its nonwhite citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X stands as the definitive statement of a movement and a man whose work was never completed but whose message is timeless. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand America.

Praise for The Autobiography of Malcolm X

“Malcolm X’s autobiography seemed to offer something different. His repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me; the blunt poetry of his words, his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order, martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will.”—Barack Obama, Dreams from My Father

“Extraordinary . . . a brilliant, painful, important book.”—The New York Times

“A great book . . . Its dead level honesty, its passion, its exalted purpose, will make it stand as a monument to the most painful truth.”—The Nation

“The most important book I’ll ever read, it changed the way I thought, it changed the way I acted. It has given me courage I didn’t know I had inside me. I’m one of hundreds of thousands whose lives were changed for the better.”—Spike Lee

“This book will have a permanent place in the literature of the Afro-American struggle.”—I. F. Stone

Amazon.com Review
Malcolm X's searing memoir belongs on the small shelf of great autobiographies. The reasons are many: the blistering honesty with which he recounts his transformation from a bitter, self-destructive petty criminal into an articulate political activist, the continued relevance of his militant analysis of white racism, and his emphasis on self-respect and self-help for African Americans. And there's the vividness with which he depicts black popular culture--try as he might to criticize those lindy hops at Boston's Roseland dance hall from the perspective of his Muslim faith, he can't help but make them sound pretty wonderful. These are but a few examples. The Autobiography of Malcolm X limns an archetypal journey from ignorance and despair to knowledge and spiritual awakening. When Malcolm tells coauthor Alex Haley, "People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by one book," he voices the central belief underpinning every attempt to set down a personal story as an example for others. Although many believe his ethic was directly opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s during the civil rights struggle of the '60s, the two were not so different. Malcolm may have displayed a most un-Christian distaste for loving his enemies, but he understood with King that love of God and love of self are the necessary first steps on the road to freedom. --Wendy Smith

From the Publisher
This book is such a classic. Reading it is almost like a rite of passage for young African AMericans.
I didn't discover it until I was in college (and an elderly female white professor of black lit introduced it to me). Wow! I'm glad she did. But my son read it at age 12. How much better that he's reading Malcolm's
moving story now --rather than late like I did. I believe it will truly affect his life in a very major way.
If I were rich, I'd donate thousands of these books to schools and young folks nationwide.

THE EPILOGUE HAS BEEN OMITTED!!!!
By Captain Howdy
Let me be crystal clear and extremely frank in this review. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is my FAVORITE book and, I believe, one of the most important books written in the 20th Century. There have been many printings of this book and they have had slight alterations throughout their publishing. The original 1965 edition came with photos. There have always been three missing chapters that are still held by a private owner. However, Penguin Modern Classics has reprinted this essential piece of literature anew-WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL EPILOGUE or Ossie Davis' contributions to the work. This means, essentially, THAT THE ASSASSINATION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOK! Reading this version of the book will leave the reader wondering how Malcolm was assassinated, who was responsible and so forth. In addition, the first page of the book is a generalizing synopsis that has the audacity to claim that Malcolm advocated change through the vehicle of violence. Anyone who has read the complete Malcolm X Autobiography in depth knows fully well that this is untrue, an absolute falsity and misrepresentation that can lead to dangerous miscalculations. Omitting the Epilogue, for a topic this serious, is not only censorship, but one must conclude that it was done intentionally. If it was done intentionally, the only real motive could be to mislead a new generation of people trying to learn THE TRUTH about Malcolm. It's a shame that they won't be able to find all of it in his own book!

The Autobiography of Malcolm X: Provocative
By Patrick J. Jones
Title: The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley

Pages: 466

Time spent on the "to read" shelf: I must have purchased this book in 2001 or 2002, so about 7 or 8 years.

Days spent reading it: 10 days.

Why I read it: During college I wrote a report in my Intro to Islam class about Black Muslims. In writing that report I discovered that Malcolm X started off with a deviant form of Islam, but after his trip to Mecca he began to change his views about Islam and also his views on hating all "white devils." I picked up this book because I was interested in Malcolm X's life after writing that report.

Brief review: Wow. This book was not what I expected at all. Reading this autobiography was more compelling than I could have imagined. I was engaged in Malcolm's life from start to finish. Starting with his street hustler days in Harlem, to his conversion to Islam (as preached by Elijah Muhammad) in prison, to his break with Elijah Muhammad, to his pilgrimage to Mecca, and ending with his assassination, this book was informative and entertaining.

A few things I found most interesting about Malcolm's life. First, Malcolm X was full of hatred for what the "white devil" had done to the black man. He saw injustice, called white men out on it, and sought to fix the situation. While I do not agree with his militant tactics, I respect his unflagging devotion to righting centuries of wrongs. Second, I find his change after his trip to Mecca as completely astonishing. He completely transformed his views. He stopped saying all white men were the devil. He started pointing to the system that oppressed, and that many white men perpetuated. It is a fascinating study to look at how drastically he changed in those last few months of his life. One certainly wonders, if he had not been killed, how his new views would have changed his approach to civil rights. Third, I was impressed by the scope of the story. Malcolm's self commentary on his life ends just a few days before he was killed. Alex Haley does a wonderful job of telling the story about the rest of his life. The account of his death is simply compelling to read. I was hooked to the very end.

I think this was one of the most important books that I have read on my list. I certainly do not agree with many of Malcolm X's views (especially the young, belligerent Malcolm). But by reading this book, I can enter his world. I can understand the pain. I can begin to understand why Malcolm was so passionate about his cause. I can begin to see how important the civil rights movement was for black Americans. And I can see how far we still have to go. We still have racism in America. Even if some of it is hidden, it is still in the American system. I think America has come a long way, but this book challenges me to look deep into my own heart and see if there are prejudices that I need to eliminate. It is not always pretty.

Malcolm X lived a life very different from my own. I am glad that I read his autobiography because it helped me to understand his radically different life more than I did before. I would highly recommend reading this book. It is enlightening and challenging and different than what I expected. Well worth the time it took to read.

Favorite quote: I told him, "What you are telling me is that it isn't the American white man who is a racist, but it's the American political, economic, and social atmosphere that automatically nourishes a racists psychology in the white man." He agreed.

Stars: 5 out of 5.

Final Word: Provocative.

Profound and Eye-Opening!
By Amazon Customer
One of the most profounding books I have read up to date. I am a graduate student, and I reading this book was an amazing and eye-opening experience. Malcolm X is such a misunderstood individual and this book helped me understand him as a person, and his views on issues throughout America and the world. I plan to
Purchase the physical copy of this book, as I think it is imperative that it gets a spot on my book shelf.

From the Publisher
This book is one of the less famous Fern Michaels romances, but definitely one of her best. I can remember reading it in high school. Fern Michaels was a favorite of mine, and I had been working my way through all of the "Captive" series. "Cinders to Satin" was a bit of a departure, but I loved it! It's more complex than many historical romances both from the eighties and now in that it covers a longer period of time, and we watch the heroine, Callie James, grow and experience a lot before she ends up with the hero, Byrch Kenyon, though their lives do intersect throughout much of the book. But when they do hook-up, look out! It's a memorable scene that I've never forgotten. If you haven't read "Cinders to Satin," don't miss it!

From the Inside Flap
From the bestselling historical romance writer Fern Michaels, author of TEXAS RICH and TEXAS HEAT, comes this exciting saga of Callie James, a brave immigrant girl from squalid Dublin, who battles her way through the hard world of late nineteenth century New York on a passion-filled, bittersweet journey to make her dreams of passion and success come true.

From the Back Cover
Before her Vegas trilogy and Texas saga soared onto bestseller lists, millions of readers were captivated by the thrilling historical romances written by Fern Michaels. Here is one of her all-time classics, a bold tale of a brave immigrant girl who in the late nineteenth century journeys to a new world and a promising future, risking her heart to make her dreams come true....

Callie James learned to survive in the squalid back alleys of Dublin. Tough, spirited, and beautiful, she was sent to New York to find her fortune. There she discovered friendship and encouragement from newspaperman Byrch Kenyon, who saw in the brash girl the desirable woman she would one day become. Rossiter Powers, the rich son of a respected family, saw something else in Callie -- and nearly destroyed her. Hugh MacDuff, rich only in love and compassion, did his best to save her. But Callie -- strong, smart, and determined to succeed -- insisted on taking charge of her own destiny.

Excellent story
By Sandra W. Engle
I love it, was so detailed about the plight of the Irish and all immigrants coming to this country back then. I enjoyed it all except towards the end the repetive love scenes got a little boring, I skipped over them. Over all a great book. Wasn't sure how it was going to end??

Fun, Interactive Reading Experience
By Comix
Long before online POV role playing we had Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming and Find Your Fate books ! The idea is simple but brilliant. Basically, you read a story about a character that is you. As the story progresses, you are asked to make decisions, some as simple as which direction to go and others as perilous as who to engage in combat. Based on your decision, you are told to flip forward to a designated page to continue reading. As a kid I loved the idea that I controlled my characters actions and every time I read the book I could make the story different. There are a few dead end choices (i.e. your character is killed) but most of the time you have an opportunity to correct your mistakes although it takes you on a longer and usually more dangerous path. The fun part is there is no one correct path but several possibilities to succeed as well as fail.
Now the best part, although Find Your Fate books came in a variety of licenses (Indiana Jones for one) and generic adventure environments (jungles, space, undersea) this one is part of a series based in the GI Joe universe !! What boy growing up in the eighties didn't want to be a Joe ? To literally "Live the adventure !" In each volume you are a new Joe with your own unique codename. So rather than being Duke or Snake Eyes, you get to be yourself as a Joe agent and work alongside and against your favorite characters.
Face off against Destro, Major Bludd, The Baroness and even Cobra Commander himself. One book in the series even includes Serpentor !
Even in my adult years I find these books to be entertaining and not nearly as predictable as you would suspect. Used or new, it's worth it for the content. I even made my own adventure using dio pictures of my Joes and a custom made Joe (to represent my character) with a new story using the books as a template.
Great nostalgic fun !!

Smoke Ring, by Larry Niven

In the free-fall environment of the Smoke Ring, the descendants of the crew of the Discipline no longer remembered their Earth roots -- or the existence of Sharls Davis Kendy, the computer-program despot of the ship. Until Kendy initiated contact once more.

Fourteen years later, only Jeffer, the Citizens Tree Scientist, knew that Kendy was still watching -- and waiting. Then the Citizens Tree people rescued a family of loggers and learned for the first time of the Admiralty, a large society living in free fall amid the floating debris called the Clump. And it was likely that the Admiralty had maintained, intact, Discipline's original computer library.

Exploration was a temptation neither Jeffer nor Kendy could resist, and neither Citizens Tree nor Sharls Davis Kendy would ever be the same again...

From Publishers Weekly
The setting of Niven's 1984 novel The Integral Trees was striking and imaginative, even for this acclaimed world builder; it's well worth the second visit made in this sequel. Around a neutron star an envelope of gas holds a breathable atmosphere and a strange profusion of plant and animal life, all floating in free-fall. Five hundred years after the crew of the Earth ship Discipline mutinied and deserted to this paradise, their descendants are still watched over by the ship's unbalanced computer mind. The machine is busy manipulating its one small contact group into exploring the larger city they have been avoiding for years. Aspects of this society are intriguingfor instance, the disdain of the better-adapted taller, thinner people for the "dwarfish" throwbacks, even though only the short can fit into the scientific relics of the old ship. As usual with Niven, character and story are just an excuse for working out the properties of his wonderful imaginary world, where people can fly like birds and ponds full of fish hang in midair. Unfortunately, in this book he fails to marshal the visual and dramatic flair needed to show it off to best effect.

''Niven has come up with an idea about as far out as one can get . . . This is certainly classic science fiction -- the idea is truly the hero.'' --Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine

Typical Niven, for better or worse
By Michael Battaglia
Chances are, when you think of a good Niven book, you don't recall the awe-inspiring plot or earth shattering dialogue exchanges or any of that sissy stuff . . . it's the ideas that hold your attention and make the book worth reading. Which leads to a love or hate relationship with the man . . . if you like your SF "hard" he's about as hard as they come and when he's "on" you'll find yourself dazzled even if you're trying to resist. And then there are those times when he's so in love with his ideas that he forgets to write a story to go along with it. This isn't that bad but it almost comes close. I'll admit the original concept of the Integral Trees was mind boggling, an entire civilization of human beings adapted to a zero gravity environment in a cloud of atmosphere that orbits a neutron star. It's been a few years since I read that book and so forgiveable that I don't quite remember what happened . . . but that concept. Whoa. Niven revisits it here, bringing back some of the people from the first book, adding some newcomers and exploring the world a little bit. The plot, when they bother with it, is fairly straightforward and really doesn't build to any sort of climax or peak, it hovers somewhere around episodic without even congealing into anything memorable. However, the ideas, those are the meat of this book and Niven whips them out on almost every page, taking full advantage of the scenario and running with the ball for all its worth. If you read your SF for the "science" part of it, you're in luck, he gives enough stuff here to keep a generation of physics graduate students busy for quite some time. Thankfully you don't need a doctorate in a higher science to understand all of it but like I said, ideas are basically all this book has. The characters are merely mouthpieces to put forward the ideas, the plot itself is merely a showcase for the ideas . . . it's a textbook with dialogue sometimes. Still, I finished it despite all of that and even if in a week I won't be able to tell you a single thing that happened in it (but boy can I explain the concept) while you're reading it you will probably find it highly entertaining, like I did. So, no it's not a classic but it can be fun. Niven gets points for originality (even if it is a sequel) even if that's all he has here. Try it anyway.

Superb
By Ahmed Rizk
This novel describes the life of human colonists in a very peculiar alien world. They live in the atmosphere of a neutron star that has no habitable planets!!. Although this the sequel to the novel "Integral trees", one does not need to have read it to get a grasp of "The smoke ring". The story has no real plot, but is very gripping nonetheless. The author reveals details of the world and way of life of colonists bit by bit, so one is always finding new concepts in every chapter. It is very good exercise for the imagination. This a mandatory reading for all hardcore SF readers.

The end of Niven's slower-than-lightspeed State that started in World out of Time
By Bill Hensler
This is a nice follow up to the Intregal trees. Now, Larry built a quasi-universe with an all controlling "State" that was established in the novel "World out of time", a very odd novel that Larry took years to write from the time of 1975 until the late 1970s.

The Intregal trees is the immediate follow up to the Smoke world, people live in a zero G enviorment that looks like a giant Smoke Ring (or it's a Ring World less a ring). Basically, it's still Larry's flat characters in a world that is fantastic by any part of the immagination. Personally, I didn't think there was much of a story here. It was more a story about a tribe of humans adapting to life with no gravity. Since I'm a big Niven fan that's not a large deal. Also, since about 90% of the reviewers here are Niven fans it's no big deal. Now, if you're not a Niven fan the book is dry and not with a lot of purpose. If you're part of the Niven fan club then the book is a four. If you're not then the book is a two star book. On average the grade is three stars, a C grade.

Looking back on this book I'm a little perplexed on how the Smoke Ring could work. The radiation from Jupiter would be fatal to any human life in a matter of days. "Gold" is a good part of the mass of Jupiter, if Gold's radiation was a fraction of Jupiter, the radiation would kill off all life in the smoke ring in a matter of weeks.

But this is still a fair book. The characters are interesting. We get to see a tribe of teenagers turn into a group of responsbile working adults. Larry takes care of a question of the fatherhood for one character. Also, Larry gets rid of one of the most annoying computers since the infamous HAL of 2001. Somebody said they didn't get the ending. Actually, there is an ending. The last part of the State has to leave the humans. Read the book and you'll get it.

I hope you enjoy this book. You'll read my last Niven review in "Fleet of Worlds" which is ready for release this coming Fall of 2008. My 28 years of reading Larry's books will be at an end.

Thanks for all the fun time, Mr. Van Colt. It has been a pleasure.

Signed

Bill Hensler

This fun compendium presents the highlights and lowlights from the careers of our Chief Executives. Presidents are actually human beings under the mutton-chop whiskers and behind the bulging waistcoats. Barbara Holland offers anecdotes both endearing and appalling to etch these leaders into our memories. Did you know...? • Franklin Pierce, "the hero of many a well-fought battle," frequently fell off his horse. • Thomas Jefferson invented the pedometer, the dumbwaiter, the lazy Susan, and the swivel chair, and also introduced brussels sprouts to America. • Theodore Roosevelt put prospective Cabinet members and new ambassadors through a challenging physical fitness test and obstacle course, which he designed himself.

One of the most enjoyable ways to bone up on your history.
By satterlee@erols.com
This is one of the funniest books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Special attention must be paid to the footnotes; they contain some of the books best lines. I only hope that the author will someday update the book to include Presidents Bush and Clinton. Since I'm not familiar with the author, I can't help but wonder whether or not she has used the same style in her other pieces. If so, they're probably a riot. Get this book. If you have any interest in history whatsoever you'll find yourself picking it up again and again.

This is a very cleverly written book.

Satterlee@erols.com's review hit the nail on the head! This is the only book I've taken the time to write a review on because I think it is an overlooked gem. All you need to enjoy this book is a small interest in American history and the beginnings of a funnybone. Good luck finding a copy.

Witty
By Carl A. Redman
Initially, the blatent sarcasm of this book is kind of annoying. But after reading the entire work, it kind of grew on me and I found myself enjoying author Barbara Holland's sense of humor. For example, one of my favorites was about Woodrow Wilson: "Historians say he was a great genius because nobody had ever thought of the League of Nations before, but this is probably not true. It's the kind of thing small children think up all the time, and their parents tell them to hush."
The only problem I had in the end with the sarcastic comments was that Holland was so loud that she sometimes came off with a "better than you" attitide. For instance, she railed Jimmy Carter for his southern accent. Perhaps I'm just defensive because I'm from the south, but the comments were sometimes quite disrespectful to our nation's highest officer.
Although the author spends an unnecessary amount of time talking about the presidents' wives (especially Mrs. Madison), she makes up for it with her witty closers at the end of each chapter. My favorite was Rutherford B. Hayes -- I'm afraid I really don't have anything more to say on the subject. I've already said far too much, and if you want to know more you'll have to go look it up for yourself. When youi find something exciting, give me a call.
This book only covers through Ronald Reagan, but it is a quick and enjoyable bedside read.
