Excellent writer

Sharyn McCrumb is an excellent writer. This series of mysteries, around main character Elizabeth MacPherson, is light reading and all have been thoroughly enjoyable. Often I laugh out loud. A number are set, at least partially, at a certain University in southwestern Virginia, which, as an alum, I instantly recognized. I first read Sharyn McCrumb's "The Songcatcher," one of her Appalachian novels. The novels aren't quick reads (like the mysteries), but are truly admirable works and deserve a reader's time and attention. Truly a gifted writer.

Married In Haste

This is a deliciously funny mystery about Americans, British Royalty, forensic anthropology and getting married in haste.

Not for THAT reason. Dr. Cameron Dawson, marine biologist, gets selected off the honors list to attend a garden party given by the Queen. Due to his brother failing to forward his mail to America, Dr. Dawson doesn't get the invitation until after his return to Scotland, three weeks before the party. Dr. Dawson is less then happy--he's going to have to wear a tie. It's his American fiancee, Elizabeth MacPherson, who is royalty-mad.

The problem: she hasn't been invited. Only spouses can come and she and Dr. Dawson are planning their wedding for next summer. Unless she puts aside the careful plans that are being laid for next year and gets married in the next two weeks. She needs to arrange for leave from her academic job and risk annoying her adviser before getting her degree. The issue is complicated by the fact that Elizabeth's parents are in Hawaii--so she turns to her Aunt Amanda to cope with the wedding. Now that Amanda is off the sauce and out of the crazy bin, she's ready to tackle this small challenge of bringing off a proper Southern society wedding in two weeks.

Complications ensue. Elizabeth considers putting the entire wedding party in kilts. Dr. Dawson's ugly garden gnome goes wandering--lost, stolen or strayed? Cousin Charles goes in search of a lady love. And a local widow gets the word that her husband has just died again.

Yes, that's right.

The main problem with this crazy cozy is that the characters are a bit too much over the top. It's still great fun to read and makes a marvelous antidote any time British Royalty hits the news.

Keeps you laughing

This is one of the best and funniest of the MacPherson series. You won't turn a page without getting a good laugh. MacPherson's crazy family is back. This is a very enjoyable book. I recommend that you read Sick of Shadows first so that you will be familiar with the characters.

Beautiful Nantucket Novel

Only Nancy Thayer writes better. Forget Elin Hilderbrand and Jane Green.
Nancy Bacon creates a very convincing island atmosphere and I wish there would be a sequel to this novel.
Unfortunately there is none, but there are other very compelling Nantucket novels out there by Nancy Thayer like "Nell", "Belonging", "The Summer House" and "Morning".

Heinlein writes his story of freedom...

I've only read a few books by Heinlein, but the more of his stories I read the more I see two trends. First, he likes to take an idea, and then run with it through every possible effect and ramification it could have. Secondly, he seems to (unless I miss my guess) be writing his adventure stories from the dual perspective of himself as a youth, and himself as an older world-weary traveler (in his own eyes anyway). Reading this book I got the same feeling from Starship Troopers and Tunnel in the sky, that our protagonist is struggling to learn the essential life lessons that he will one day be in a position to hand down. But that's just Heinlein...

In this story, our master of sci-fi take the idea of freedom to it's absolute philosophical limits. First, he shows us the world of a person who is an actual slave and has no rights whatsoever. Then, he takes that individual, and shoves them into situation after situation that leave us wondering what exactly freedom is. When Thorby is taught by his adoptive father how to think, he is freed mentally. When he is adopted by space-traders he is almost totally free in a physical sense (the traders travel all of space), but he finds himself enslaved to a way of life, a series of traditions, and many many rules. As part of the intergalactic space police force (or its equivalent), he finds himself fighting for freedom, yet again a slave to the ideals and way of life (and organization) behind it. The real kicker though, is when Thorby finds himself in a position of super-powerful financial might, with literally the world at his fingertips, yet enslaved to that power and all the responsibilities that it implies.

Perhaps the real message of the story though, (to me anyway), is that freedom really is in the mind of the beholder, and helping others to overcome enslavements of a hateful, evil sort (like literal slavery) is a very good thing indeed. And no matter where you go, you will always be enslaved to something. So you'd better learn to survive, to be happy, and to make the most of what you have. And forget about the limits others try to impose upon you. A person with a mind that is free...is a Citizen of the Galaxy.

Besides all the great philosophy and ideas that Heinlein is famous for is of course a great adventure that really captures the imagination. I love every Heinlein story I've read so far, for the characters, the slick dialog (especially for it's time

), and the amazing universes he always manages to have up his sleeve. This book is DEFINITELY an enjoyable read for sci-fi fans.

I was introduced to Xanth when I was sick and became one of it's greatest silent fans. The library had this buried and I just had a feeling I finnally found someone I can identify with, Dee. Her simplistic complexity was right on the mark and when she wins, not only her true love, but also finds that it's o.k. to be so different and yet the same as everyone else, you can't help but LOVE these books! Piers, please don't ever stop being a kid inside, i'd think the world as I know it was about to end. With resspect from a former Alcoholic, thanks

Many readers, now in their 40's & 50's...still moved

Was this book a universal coming of age for many of us who are now in our 40's and 50's? Many have commented that they read this when they were 10-15 yrs old, and it made an incredible impression on them. This experience is mentioned on many of the websites dealing with Rampa, to include skeptic blogs, etc. Even if it is fantasy, isn't it interesting that it made such an impression on so many of us at such an early age? I was probably 12 yrs old when I read his books, as my older brother and Mom were very into the occult, and it seemed very natural to me. I remember after reading the books, seeing auras, which I accepted as normal at that age. I'm no longer seeing auras, and I am not into new age subjects, but I must give cudos to a book that could/can continue to affect me 40 yrs later. Hoax? Spiritual hijack? Who cares...it made me a more spiritual person, made me respect the souls of others more, and continues to stay with me MANY years later. I'd say it's a classic.
