beautiful cover
By charles ballew
I have always loved the cover of this novel. Usually covers don't really add to the story inside, or worse yet, aren't even done for that particular novel. But this cover, which wraps around to the backside, takes you right into the world of Tran-ky-ky, and illustrates one of the most memorable moments in the novel.

I love this novell. Hey, the dialogue is poorly written, and the novel goes on a few chapters beyond the point where it should logically (and strongly) have ended. BUT IT IS STILL GREAT! there are some elements in the novel that are remeniscent of Dune, but although Dune is a much more sophisticated and artistic novel, I've only read it twice, but I've read Icerigger at least twenty times since I bought it as a teenager. The plot is totally engrossing.

I used to fantasize that if I ever become a director, I'd want to make this novel into a movie. That will probably never happen, so i will just have to settle for reading it another twenty times!

Icerigger is a swashbuckling tale full of heroes and battles
By Adam Missner
This is a kinda obscure out-of-print (but easy to find) novel from 1974. Another Listmania selection (as most of my recent choices are), and as usual, very enjoyable. Icerigger is a swashbuckling tale full of heroes and battles, where 6 people crash land into a medieval civilization just in time for them to fight a war (of sorts). This is purely a story, there is no deeper meaning and nothing to think much about, but a very solid story indeed, what! The first in a trilogy.

Early A.D. Foster w/ Skua September
By Spass
I've been intending to read this book for years. first in a trilogy

what can I say? (I don't do spoilers) Ethan Fortune and Skua September get accidentally assimilated in a kidnapping plot and end up crash landing on an arctic planet (Tran-ky-ky). encounter the locals and have adventures trying to get back to whatever passes for advance civilization on that planet.

the book is a good easy read, a bit contrived (ok... what SciFi isn't?) but holds to its plot well.
I won't say it is one of his best, but it is decent recommended (required?) reading for Alan Dean Foster fans.

For what it is worth (and this isn't a spoiler) Skua shows up in one of the Flinx books too.

My public library doesn't have copies of this trilogy.

A Christmas Tradition
By A Reader
In our house, it has become a Christmas tradition to read Barrington Bunny (the first story in this book) aloud with different people reading the parts of different animals. I think it has made a difference in the lives of our children to think about a free gift, no strings atached, the meaning of friendship,or scary things (like wolves) who do no harm The Lone Ranger brings a new appreciation for the risk in taking religion seriously. The Easter Egg story brought major comfort to a friend after their child died. And the songs aren't bad either.

Stories to stir your heart and spirit!
By Bonstingl@aol.com
Long before the compilers of "soup" stories made their fame and fortune by gathering and publishing other folks' heartwarming stories, an authentic young cleric named Martin Bell wrote and published this exceptional collection of his own original tales of love, abandonment, and redemption.The best of Martin Bell's offerings is the Christmas story "Barrington Bunny." This touching reminder of the power of brotherly love and self-sacrifice -- a message that is, or should be, at the heart of Christmas remembrance -- has been a treasured annual tradition in my household and my classroom for many years.Even more powerful than the written version is Martin Bell's reading of his own work. Get his recording (also entitled "The Way of the Wolf") if you can, and have a supply of tissues at hand.You will discover this thin book to be an abundantly thoughtful and heartful treat for anyone who has ever pondered the real meaning of our earthly existence and our rightful relationship with one another and with our God. A refreshing antidote to the dulling cynicism and negativism of our times.If the rating scale permitted six stars, I would wnat to give "The Way of the Wolf" at least ten!{A note of caution: Several books have this same title. Only one is authored by Martin Bell.}

From Publishers Weekly
The latest of McCaffrey's romantic Pern novels expands on the tale of a minor character in Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern. Young Nerilka is considered unattractive and overly serious in her own hold, where her peremptory father installs his mistress immediately after his wife's death. Angry and frustrated, Nerilka uses her medical training and her access to the supplies her father is hoarding to help combat the plague sweeping Pern, which has already claimed her mother and sisters. Inevitably, her work with the Healers leads her to Ruatha Hold, whose rugged widower chief, Lord Alessan, sees her worth and marries her. In form, this is basically a Victorian gothic in which a governess tames and marries the gruff master of the house. As such, McCaffrey's legions of fans should enjoy it, but it is a weak entry in the Pern saga.
Copyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
YA This slight addition to McCaffrey's dragon novels is about a minor character mentioned in Moretta, Dragonlady of Pern (Ballantine, 1983). Nerilka, the plain and ignored oldest daughter of Lord Tolocamp, is appalled when her father abandons her mother and sisters to the plague spreading from Ruatha Hold, then refuses aid to anyone else on the rest of Pern. Nerilka first sends medicines secretly, then sets off (in disguise) for Ruatha, a place she had long wished to visit but had always been prevented from going. There she finds acceptance both for her healing skills and for herself, and she falls in love with the seemingly unattainable Alessan, Lord of Ruatha. This illustrated novella, about the size of a paperback, is not the best of McCaffrey, but it does have an interesting heroine and will satisfy McCaffrey's legions of fans who want to know why Alessan married so shortly after the death of his beloved Moretta. From the Publisher
There are dragons all over Anne McCaffrey's house. Some she's bought, but many have been made for her by adoring fans and given to her as gifts. I don't make dragons, of course. But whenever circumstances allow, I do try to bring her American bacon, something she can't get easily in Ireland, and something which she has taught all her friends there to love, as well! I remember the first time I went to visit her, when she was still living in her old, much smaller but very homey, house. My husband and I arrived at the doorstep, and she immediately began bustling about, frying up some of the bacon we'd brought and sharing a lovely late breakfast with us before sending us off to the hotel for a nap. She made us dinner that night, too--the one and only time in my life that I've actually liked shrimp cocktail. Maybe that's because if you squint your eyes and look sideways, shrimp are kind of dragonlike, and I was eating them in the right company!

Unique entry in the Pernese saga
By John A. Kuczma
With the publishing of Nerilka's Story, Anne McCaffrey took a bold and potentially dangerous step, leaving the proven success of concertrating on dragons and dragonriders to offer the reader a revealing and poignant insight into the equally dangerous but more mundane world of the common holder.
This book gives us a feel for what the average citizen of Pern must endure; privation, sickness, a medieval culture governed by far-from-enlightened nobles, and the desperation of facing endless drudgery with little hope of ever improving one's lot in life.
The entire Pernese series is greatly enriched by the grass roots knowledge revealed in this story. Nerilka faces daunting challenges from a variety of sources, eventually proving that both tragedy and triumph are the domain of all people, and that indomitable spirits are not limited to those whose lives are spent in the Weyrs.
Ms McCaffrey goes to great lengths, including illustrations, to emphasize how physically plain and unappealing Nerilka is. Regardless, nothing can keep the beauty of her spirit and personality from bursting through. She is as true a heroine as any who ever rode a dragon.
Nerilka's Story may be a saphire in a world of diamonds, but it is still a jewel in the crown of the Pernese Saga. Without this volume, the tale of the Dragonriders of Pern is incomplete.

An Excellent Change of Perspective
By Lys
Readers of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" series will undoubtedly be familiar with the background and setting of this book. The planet Pern, in the Rukbat Sector, is perpetually under seige from a mindlessly voracious lifeform known as Thread. The Dragonriders are the planet's only hope, searing the silvery rain as it falls from the sky.
Ms. McCaffrey has spun many a wondrous tale of these heroic figures, creating a world rich with a culture all it's own. This story, however, does not feature a dragonrider, nor does it feature Ms. McCaffrey's other favorite Pernese subject, the Harpers. Instead, both of those groups play secondary parts to the main character, Nerilka. Rill, as she's known, is a new type of character for fans: she is an ordinary person. A middle child, a daughter in a culture that favors sons, and an average human being with jealousies as well as compassion, Rill stands out amongst the characters that the author has created as she becomes the 'average Rill' who rises above tragedy and finds strength deep inside to do what must be done.
The book stands best as a companion volume to Ms. McCaffrey's "Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern", though it can be read on it's own. There is a greater richness of understanding and unsaid detail available if the reader is familiar with the storyline and characters populating "Moreta", though.
The writing style is a bit more simplistic than usual for the author, and the book is a very quick read, not taxing in either length or complexity. The illustrations are interesting, though I have to admit that the characters looked very different in my own mind's eye, but that is probably to be expected.
All in all this book is good for a quick 'dip' into the world of Pern. The characters are engaging, Nerilka and those that the reader comes across at Ruatha Hold are the most clearly delineated. It has an enjoyable, simple plotline with no real shocks or unexpected twists and turns. An excellent read for times when the reader just wants something light.

A Unique Book in the Pern Series!
By Silmarwen
Nerilka is a hardworking rather plain daughter of the Lord Holder of Fort Hold. She spends most of her summers gathering and laying up medicines and other stores. She spends the rest of her time helping in the kitchens and sewing or whatever other work needs doing. When her father decides to take some of her younger, unmarried sisters to the Ruatha Gather in hopes of snaring Lord Alessan as a husband, she believes that she will get to go too, but her father leaves her behind. Nerilka thinks that this is very cruel because her best friend was Lord Alessan's first wife before she was killed in a tragic runnerbeast accident and she used to write to Nerilka about Ruatha. Nerilka would give just about anything to see it.
When Fort Hold hears the terrible news about the sickness spreading across Pern, Nerilka immediately takes as many stores to the Harper Hall as she can, knowing full well that her father would never give them anything. Her father forces one of the dragonriders to bring him back to Fort Hold, flagrantly disobeying the rule of the Masterhealer to stay where you were when the sickness started to spread. Nerilka soon learns that her mother and all of her sisters died of the plague. Her mother is barely in the ground before her father brings his mistress and her family into the Hold. Nerilka cannot bear to serve someone younger than herself who lords it over everyone at the Hold. When she overhears her father denying the Masterhealer and Masterharper medication and other supplies, Nerilka sneaks out several large sacks of the essentials and leaves with them. She starts treating the illness at a camp just outside of the Fort Hold and then travels to small holdings that are far away from Hold and Weyr.
Nerilka soon hears that Ruatha Hold is all but desolate, she knows that she is needed most there. She arrives to discover that Lord Alessan has lost all of his family, but his sister Oklina. As she struggles with the few survivors of Ruatha Hold to develop a vaccine that can save all of Pern's livestock, she finds herself falling in love with Lord Alessan. She knows that he will never care for her, especially since he loves Weyrwoman Moreta, but when news of the terrible tragedy of Moreta's death reaches Ruatha, it changes everything...
Nerilka's Story is essentially the same story contained in Moreta: Dragonlady of Pern, but told from a different perspective. This is the first time in the series that Anne McCaffrey wrote a book about someone other than a dragonrider or a Harper so it was very interesting to see life on Pern from a completely different perspective. I liked Nerilka - she kept trying to stand up for herself and to do what was right even when everyone else was trying to hold her back and keep her down. I also enjoyed seeing the story of Moreta from an outsider's point of view and learned a lot about Pern at the time of Moreta that I didn't know before. My only real complaint about the book is that it is so short! I was able to read it in about 1 hour (I am a fast reader, though). If you have enjoyed any of Anne McCaffrey's other books in the Pern series, I know that you will enjoy this one!

20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
with a new Afterword from the author

The New York Times bestseller

This is the life and times of T. S. Garp, the bastard son of Jenny
Fields--a feminist leader ahead of her times.  This is the life and death
of a famous mother and her almost-famous son; theirs is a world of sexual
extremes--even of sexual assassinations.  It is a novel rich with "lunacy
and sorrow"; yet the dark, violent events of the story do not undermine a
comedy both ribald and robust.  In more than thirty languages, in more than
forty countries--with more than ten million copies in print--this novel
provides almost cheerful, even hilarious evidence of its famous last line:
"In the world according to Garp, we are all terminal cases."

Amazon.com Review
"Garp was a natural storyteller," says the narrator of John Irving's incandescent novel, referring to the book's hero, the novelist Garp, who has much in common with Irving himself. "He could make things up one right after the other, and they seemed to fit."

Irving packs wild characters and weird events into his classic--officially recognized as such in a Modern Library edition with a new introduction by the author--while amazingly maintaining the rough feel of realism in every scene and the pulse of life in every heart. Many novelists of his time might have populated a novel with a novelist protagonist whose life and books comment on each other and the novel we're reading. Transsexual football players, ball turret gunners lobotomized in battle, multiple adultery, unicycling bears, mad feminists who amputate their tongues in sympathy with the celebrated victim of a horrifying rape--Irving made them all people. Even the bear is a fitting character.

In a crucial episode, Garp's wife's seduction of a young man coincidentally occurs at the moment when Garp is delighting their young sons with a reckless car trick (one of the few scenes beautifully, eerily, heartbreakingly captured in the film version as well). Many authors would have been content with the harsh comedy of the scene, but Irving respects its integrity, and he builds the rest of the book on the consequences of the event. How does he get away with his killer cocktail of slapstick and horror? Because it's simply what we all face daily, rearranged into soul-satisfying art. "Life is an X-rated soap opera," according to Garp, and who can contradict him?

Rereading Garp 20 years later, one is struck by how elegantly Irving structures his bizarre and complex story. Take the two most celebrated bits in the book, the Under Toad and Garp's story "The Pension Grillparzer," which shimmers like an exquisite Kafkaesque insect in the amber of the novel. When Garp warns his son about the "undertow" at the beach, the boy imagines a monster out of Beowulf who lurks beneath the waves to suck you under: the "Under Toad." It's funny at first, but we soon find that the Under Toad is a metaphor with teeth--he connects with a prophetic dream of death in "The Pension Grillparzer," set in Vienna. Garp's son's last words are, "It's like a dream!" And as Irving--who studied at the University of Vienna--can certainly tell you, the German word for "death" sounds precisely like the English word "toad."

All that death, and yet Garp is mainly exuberant. This story is, as Garp's stuttering writing teacher puts it, "rich with lu-lu-lunacy and sorrow." It enriches literature, and our lives. --Tim Appelo

From Library Journal
"In the world according to Garp, we're all terminal cases." This sentence ends both Irving's comic and tragic novel and its wonderful audio adaptation, read disarmingly by Michael Prichard. We hear the familiar story of T.S. Garp; his mother, Jenny Fields; and Garp's wife, family, friends, and lovers. We also see Garp's efforts to establish himself as a serious author and his involvement in sexual politics. In contrast, Jenny's memoirs establish her as a feminist leader. This work is funny, sexual, serious, and sad. Prichard's narration adds a wonderful dimension to the story. Plus, Irving opens with a terrific introduction to mark the novel's 20th anniversary. This wise and unique tale is as fresh today as it was when first published in 1978. Obviously, a required purchase for all audio collections and required listening for all Irving fans. Irving's (A Son of the Circus, Audio Reviews, LJ 12/94) new novel echoes Garp through tracing the complicated life of novelist Ruth Cole. Divided into three parts, the book views Ruth's life and relationships at age four in 1958, age 36 in 1990, and age 41 in 1995. In the first part, Ruth's mother, devastated by the loss of two sons, leaves her daughter and womanizing husband after a brief love affair with a teenage boy. Part 2 focuses on Ruth's book tour in Europe while coming to grips with a poor love life and considering marriage to an older man. Part 3 traces Ruth's short widowhood and her marriage to the Dutch policeman who solves the murder to which she was a witness. Like Garp, this is a complex, sad, and quite compelling tale. Narrator George Guidall's reading adds to the texture of the story. And like the audio adaptation of Garp, this wonderful novel is a required purchase for all audio collections.?Stephen L. Review
“The most powerful and profound novel about women written by a man in our generation . . . Like all extraordinary books, Garp defies synopsis. . . . A marvelous, important, permanent novel by a serious artist of remarkable powers.”—Chicago Sun-Times

“Nothing in contemporary fiction matches it. . . . Irving’s blend of gravity and play is unique, audacious, almost blasphemous. . . . Brilliant, funny, and consistently wise; a work of vast talent.”—The New Republic

“A wonderful novel, full of energy and art, at once funny and horrifying and heartbreaking.”—Washington Post

I'm glad I read this book and I will not forget it- it has some serious surprises. It was a great book club choice, as it spurred a lot of conversation about fidelity, growing older, and feminism. As my husband said "John Irving has one story to tell over and over again (there are some serious similarities to his book Owen Meaney, which I also loved), but it is still worth reading each one." I agree.

Black Comedy Shines Bright
By Pamela
This a dark, dark novel about the lunacy of the modern world. Those who appreciate gallows humor will find this book - though extremely tragic - the funniest they've read in a long time. "The World According to Garp" works precisely because it possesses a distinctly un-American prospective of reality, that is that not everything ends happily, not all promise is fulfilled, and there are not an unlimited number of chances in life. If you need an uplifting novel, don't bother with this one; similarly, stay away if you need a mental escape. But if you can handle reality, in all it's ghastly manifestations, pick up this book and laugh at it all.

THE DRIVE OF PROPHECY

The quest was over. The Orb of Aldur was restored. And once again, with the crowning of Garion, there was a descendant of Riva Iron-grip to rule as Overlord of the West.

But the Prophecy was unfulfilled. In the east, the evil God Torak was about to awaken and seek dominion. Somehow, Garion had to face the God, to kill or be killed. On the outcome of that dread duel rested the destiny of the world. Now, accompanied by his grandfather, the ancient sorcerer Belgarath, Garion headed toward the City of Endless Night, where Torak awaited him.

To the south, his fiancée, the princess Ce'Nedra, led the armies of the West in a desperate effort to divert the forces of Torak's followers from the man she loved.

The Prophecy drove Garion on. But it gave no answer to the question that haunted him: How does a man kill an immortal God?

Here is the brilliant conclusion to the epic of The Belgariad, which began in Pawn of Prophecy--a novel of fate, strange lands, and a Prophecy that must be fulfilled--the resolution of the war of men, Kings, and Gods that had spanned seven thousand years!

Review
Absorbing. Touches all the right Fantasy bases. Warring gods, political intrigues, supernatural creatures, and appealingly human magicians. --Publishers Weekly

Exactly the kind of fantasy I like. It has magic, adventure, humor, mystery, and a certain delightful human insight. --Piers Anthony

Fabulous! Eddings has a marvelous storyteller style. Exceedingly well portrayed. --Anne McCaffrey

From the Publisher
David Eddings [The Belgariad series] -- This is like Bonanza, or like I Love Lucy. There will be other fantasy series, but there can never be another that's so seminal, that so captures the essence of fantasy. Big Dave and Little Leigh grow their heroes from the ground up, and they grow the best.

Great reading
By A Customer
I have read everything I can find by Tolkein. I have read all I can of Tad Williams. I have read hundreds of books in this genre and I can say this series is excellent. This genre is popular because it requires an imagination, and it is there for the readers to have a good time, not to make literary students of all of us. I don't give a damn for character development and plot - I want something that is going to take me away and let my imagination go on a ride. Eddings did brilliantly with this. The last few books were so fast paced, I couldn't put them down. I can't wait to begin reading the Mallorean. If a person wants to do some seriouse literary reviewing then try a different Genre.

A Long Tale Comes To An End (almost)
By Marc Ruby™
Enchanters' End Game chronicles the climax to Garion's long quest to bring two conflicting prophecies back into synch. As Child of Light, he and his friends have wandered across the Alorn kingdoms, ventured into Tolnedra and Nyissa, and now Garion, Belgarath, and Silk are in the Angarak side of the continent heading for the final confrontation with Torak.

Pacing Garion is C'Nedra, who has rallied the armies of the West to provide what amounts to a distraction so that Garion, thousands of miles away can slip into Cthol Mishrak without the entire Murgo population trying to put an end to them. For all the sarcasm and wit that the characters display, this is a grim struggle, and C'Nedra's forces will be caught between the massive armies of the Mallorean Emperor Zakath and Taur Urgas the insane king of the Murgos. Levity or not many will die in the confrontation.

Of the two story arcs, C'nedra's is the more interestingly told. Garion's adventures are mostly hiding and running at a very forced pace. His challenge is to keep his fear in check as he prepared for a duel that will kill one of the participants. On the other hand, the Alorn kings and many friends surround C'nedra. The preparations for the final battle are extensive, and many of the characters show unexpected sides.

In retrospect, once this series slows down in Castle of Wizardry, it never quite regains its pace. Eddings hadn't quite learned to control his efforts in this series, and his early rush left him lacking a bit of plot in the fourth volume of this series. Enchanters' End Game recovers (nothing like a massive battle to perk things up) but Edding's will always be noted more for characterization and detail than for action. But his next series, the Malloreon is more evenly written, so the pacing is much smoother.

I tend to view these stories as comfort food for fantasy addicts. While they lack something in the way of fast paced action and emotional range, they are genuinely entertaining. I've reread them all several times and they always seem to bear up. I wish everything I read was at least this well done.

END OF ONE SERIES AND ACTUAL START OF ANOTHER
By D. Blankenship
Enjoyed this one as much as the others in the series. This ends the Belgariad series and sets up for the Malloreon. All in all these are good reads. Most of the folks I know have read this series and The Malloreon several times...they are sort of habit forming. If read for what they were written for, light books which should be enjoyed and ones to have fun with, then you will like them. If on the other hand if you just graduated from Jr. High and are much, much too mature for them, then you should probably wait until you reach your dotage so that you can appreciate them again. Yes, they are flawed and yes there are endless contradictions (some 233 by my last count), but that is part of the charm of this work. Hey, go out to a oak tree in the woods or in your park, kick back, read and enjoy. Recommend highly.

From Publishers Weekly
Prevention and self-care are the watchwords for this hefty health manual by a Seattle physician whose practice combines conventional and alternative medicine. Golan examines the underlying causes of chronic ailments, which he dubs the Ten Common Denominators of Illness. Dietary hazards and nutritional deficiencies receive the greatest attention; most of the other sources of illness he lists are also diet-related, e.g., toxic bowel, food allergies. In another section, he offers an alphabetical list of 100 common ailments from abscesses to water retention, identifying symptoms, common causes and suggested treatments and preventive measures for each. While approaches to wellness occasionally include conventional medical treatment, most are recommendations for dietary changes, herbal remedies and nutritional supplements. Although Golan, who teaches naturopathic medicine, slights other alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic and massage, his holistic approach will appeal to those frustrated by the disease-oriented approach of conventional medicine.

From Library Journal
Holistic physician Golan provides here a detailed compilation of self-care methods from both New Age and "age-old" approaches. His focus is on developing health rather than "fixing" disease. Chapters cover fasting, herbal therapies, acupuncture, homeopathy, natural immunity, improved diet, environmental health, and detoxification. Golan also includes a master symptom survey to identify conditions for which modern medicine has no cure, offering specific guidance in using alternative methods to create optimal wellness. This useful health reference is recommended for public libraries.?Valerie Vaughan, Hatfield P.L., Mass.

From Booklist
By means of a mixture of commonsense advice, concise definitions, and comforting bromides, Golan melds New Age health strategies and practices with responsible conventional medical care. Probably more useful to true believers and those sympathetic to New Age culture, his big book may serve well as both a small library's one resource on "wellness" and a larger collection's most accessible book on the point "where mainstream and alternative medicine meet." Including copious bibliographical references, many nice mnemonic touches, and plenty of handy tables and charts, the comprehensive tome is just the thing to help those seeking "wellness" avail themselves of it. Nutritional emphasis for healthier living
By Lynn Harnett
After eight years of practicing conventional medicine, Ralph Golan, M.D., realized he would be happiest practicing "preventive and wellness medicine." Twelve years later this Seattle physician decided to share his approach - combining naturopathy and conventional medicine - in this convincing and inspirational health guide and reference work.
The underpinnings of Golan's philosophy are nutritional, with an emphasis on natural foods, balance, and avoidance of sugar and processed foods. He has observed ten "common denominators" of chronic illness which undermine the immune system and exhibit a wide variety of symptoms which often cannot be diagnosed as specific illnesses.
Golan begins his book with two case histories illustrating his approach. The second chapter is a master symptom survey for each of the ten common denominators, allowing the reader to rate his or her health in accordance with each. Golan then devotes three chapters to diet - presenting the most common American hazards, discussing the importance of dietary balance and the specific properties and energies of various foods and offering menus and recipes.
And then, having given the reader an understanding of how food works chemically in the body, Golan devotes a chapter to each of the common denominators - nutritional deficiencies, poor digestion and assimilation, the toxic bowel, the sluggish liver, hypoglycemia, adrenal exhaustion, yeast overgrowth, food allergies, chemical hypersensitivity and environmental illness and finally psychoneuroimmunology or the body-mind connection. A last chapter in this section discusses the relationship of the immune system with these underlying conditions. Readers may want to use their symptom surveys to determine which chapters will be of primary interest - reading all of them at once can lead to information overload.
The next hundred pages lists common ailments and natural remedies. Discussions of alternative medicine follow, including fasting and cleansing (which he embraces enthusiastically), herbs, massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy and more. And Golan concludes with a chapter on choosing and relating to your doctor.
While much of his advice is common sense, Golan gives lots of specifics. For instance, it's not enough to choose oils that are polyunsaturated. Heat triggers generation of tissue-damaging free radicals in many oils and almost all supermarket oils (except extra virgin olive) are processed with heat.
Excess sugar is seen as an underlying factor in a dizzying number of health problems from depression to gallstones and Golan offers tables listing sugar amounts in popular cereals as well as other foods. There are also tables describing the purpose and consequences of numerous food additives, tables showing symptoms associated with excess consumption of popular foods from milk to peanut butter, tables illustrating symptoms of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, tables listing sources of heavy metals and their consequences. You get the picture.
Golan does not expect readers to instantly adopt lives of disciplined asceticism. He advocates a gradual introduction of healthier foods and avoidance of toxins until a healthier diet becomes a joy rather than a chore. Unlike many nutritionists, he is a strong advocate of vitamin supplements, and prescribes them for individual ailments as well as general health.
This is book for anyone willing to take a few extra steps in the interests of general health and well being.

Optimal Wellness
By Carol Mockridge
The doctor can write! I finally understand the immune system, which vitamins to take and what's the big deal about free radicals and antioxidants. My friends constantly call me to look up what their doctors didn't explain clearly to them. The answers are always in Optimal Wellness. I tell them to buy the book. It's a real bargain.

wonderful resource to learn the holistic medicine
By Jou Ho Gun
I have read important issues of this book for three or four times and it really gives useful information as to how to view a disease from a holistic viewpoint. As an oriental medicine specialist in South Korea, I have been quite curious for what it is like for american alternative medical professionals to approach many kinds of disease, and as I read through this book I have been able to get a good picture of what the holistic medicine is like. As a result in these days combination of holistic and oriental medicine has come true in my clinic and many patients who have some kind of incurale chronic disorders gradually have got relieved after they received the appropriate combined therapy. So far as practiced the combind therapy of holistic and oriental, I am sure that the effect gradually goes up and that the more and more patients will turn to my clinic. I am very grateful to Dr. Ralph Golan for his book. Though not the only one book it is that I have read, good grasp of it enabled me to explore other useful volumes concerning alternative medicine. Medical specialists as well as laypersons who are interested in alternative medicine might read this book and could figure out how to set up a strategy for the improvement of a sickness that has not yet been relieved by anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and surgeries.

Another point that I want to say is that oriental(Korean or Chinese) medicine and holistic medicine bear so much similarities that there have been neither any hardwork nor any error nor mistake in mixturing these two different brand of medicines. I mean trying two shots by a gun, no side effect comes on, only synergistic increased effectiveness takes place, and it is very easy to have two shots at one time. Adrenal axhaustion or food allergy or sluggish liver, for example, are topics that have been dealt with for many centuries by the oriental medicine. Anyway, it is a valuable resource and wonderful book!

Just OK
By Mark Dengler
Mission to Moulokin is the mildly entertaining 2nd book in the Tran-ky-ky ice world series that essentially completes the story arc begun in the 1st book. The writing seems to be aimed towards a middle school audience at best. I liked Foster's imagined frozen planet and its flora and fauna. Much weaker are his cardboard characters and his generally clueless "salesman" protagonist. There is minimal development of the secondary players. One of them, the former school teacher, seemed to have considerably more potential as principal protagonist.

The books are barely sci-fi; more fantasy/adventure I would file near A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court rather than Heinlein or Asimov's work.

Ethan Frome Fortune had been on Tran-ky-ky long enough... too long, in fact. He wanted out. He wanted to get back to business. He wanted to go home. So he and his sidekick Skua September headed their giant Icerigger toward Brass Monkey, the busy off-world trading post where they were sure they could book passage home.

But when they discovered that their Tran friends were being victimized by ruthless profiteers, they decided to stick around and organize the isolated city-states into a functioning confederation... a governing body that the Commonwealth Council would have to recognize and protect.

But the Tran had enemies - deadly ones, at that - and Skua September and Ethan Fortune quickly found themselves back aboard the icerigger Slanderscree, leaving a crimson wake on the frozen seas and hurtling toward the most chilling encounters either had ever known!

Time to make a reprint
By Thomas Alter(t.alter@juno.com)
This is the second in the Icerigger series and one of a number of books in the Commonwealth Universe by Foster. The way that he incorporates information from the other novels of the commonweath gives this book, and the series, a form of history and background usually missing in such works. It also is so well done that even if you haven't read any of the other commonwealth books, it is easy to keep up with the action and become almost involved in the events happening in the book. I just hope that they bring the Icerigger Trilogy back in a hardcover one book format, so that many more people can become fans of Fosters. Definitely a must read.

In her hardcover debut, Hambly ( Dragonsbane ) will give Ann Ricehigher praise that this we rarely see in our little literary mag!! got to keep the readers interested, eh what? a run for her money. Oxford professor James Ahser, once an agent for the British government, is forced to help the vampires of Edwardian London, who are being destroyed one by one through exposure to sunlight as they lie sleeping in their coffins. If she does not oblige, his young wife, Lydia, will perish as have many other vampire victims over the years. Accompanied by one of the oldest of the vampires, Simon Ysidro, who has lived in London since the time of Elizabeth I, Asher begins his investigations, learning about the life and culture of vampires. Meanwhile, Lydia, who is one of the few women physicians of the era, prowls through old property records and medical journals attempting to find other clues. Asher comes to suspect that the killer is a vampire, an unusual one who can live in the light of day, and Lydia develops a reasonable physiology that would account for the ability. Hambly's examination of vampirism is beautifully detailed, with a fine, realistic background and strong sense of atmosphere. Her characters are finely honed, particularly Don Ysidro, the vampire with a sense of noblesse oblige. Major ad/promo.

Wonderful tale of vampires and witty Englishman
By CopperKat
I first read this book years and years ago...long before the current trend we're seeing with all things vampire. My Aunt had given it to me in hard cover and insisted that I read it. It is just a wonderful book, filled with fascinating characters, from the witty and intelligent James Asher to the cool and clever vampire Don Simon Ysidro. The prose is so well done, some lines of which I have thought about or used in conversation many times over the years. I have read and re-read this one many times and it always entertains.

I was delighted to see it available for Kindle and purchased it to have it with me when the mood for a great vampire hunt story strikes my fancy.

ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR KINDLE ADDITION: This Kindle version of the book has lots of formatting errors. On every page, often several to a page, there are two words run together. It makes me stop to think what is the word? Very disruptive to my reading style. This books wasn't free, so I'm displeased with these errors!

Couldn't put it down!
By A Customer
I usually don't read vampire stories (except for the Count St. Germain series)--the classic creepy, cold-hearted and cold-fleshed hunters of the night are too "alien" to relate to...but Don Simon Ysidro grows on you...He comes to James Asher (ostensibly a mild-mannered Oxford lecturer on folk tales and language) to investigate the "murders" of a series of fellow London vampires. Asher, a bitterly disillusioned former secret agent for British Intelligence, has his own past "ghosts" to deal with--murders, betrayals and lies done in the name of "King and Country." Despite being forced into the investigation by Ysidro's threat to his wife's life, James Asher slowly comes to understand, respect and even value Ysidro's "life" and its realities. It is this delicate development of friendship and understanding that elevate this book from merely a gripping horror novel to a memorable "keeper" book to be shared with friends. The other vampires of London, the details of their "lives" and history, and the final horrifying battle with the "murderer" will keep you reading into the night, but Don Simon Ysidro is who will linger in your mind.

Realistic- Intriguing-Awaiting with Bated Breath
By Kimberley Wilson
I am a compusive reader. I'll read anything in front of me at least--once. I've read this book 13-times! (Is that a bad omen?) This is one of the best gas-light mysteries that I've ever read or that has been written using vampires & their culture as a the back drop of a Sherlock Holmes-like mystery. Don Simon Ysidro is not only the oldest vampire in London, but he is also cold, manipulative, intense, powerful & deadly (You'll warm up to him eventually). Ysidro compells a mild mannered, poly-lingustic, world-weary retired spy, Dr. James Asher, to hunt for the person who has been methodically hunting & killing the vampires of London in exchange for his wife's life-- and his own. The plot is tight & the characters are believable. Give this book out to friends & family as gifts year around. No one-should miss out on this book.

UNUSUAL STYLISH THRILLER
By Michael Butts
This is my first Patterson book and overall I find it to be a very well-written, if complex, and stylish thriller. The novel opens in the early 1950's and we meet the Carey family, impossibly hard-hearted father John; brothers Charles and Phillip; the self-centered, somewhat demented Allie; and the charming little boy, Peter, who grows up to be the focal point of the novel. The first section has a lot of information in it, and though sometimes hard to digest or keep the many plot mechanizations in context, it sets a very sad and lethal plot for the remainder of the book.
Grown up Peter, having amnesia after the accident that claims his parents' lives, now must face the sale of his father's company and fend off some mysterious and deadly pursuers.
What makes this book work so well is Patterson's handling of the psyche of Peter, and the difficult time he has trusting people. Several key characters are introduced including his girlfriend, Noelle; the crazed killer Martin; two psychiatrists, one a longtime friend of his father; and Ruth Levy, the mistress of his deceased father and also the sister of his psychiatrist.
The plot thickens, secrets are hidden and revealed, and the novel ends in a blazing finish that is more than satisfactory.
Not by any means a brilliant classic, "Escape the Night" is a well-written study in suspense and terror.
RECOMMENDED.
