CLASS a classic--just ask Peyton Place!
By Allen Smalling
CLASS offers an unflinching lowdown on where your allegedly "classless" fellow Americans really stand. From the "top out of sight" ultra-rich through the middle classes and down to the destitute "bottom out of sights," Fussell has everyone pegged. Clothes, consumption, speech and leisure give us away much more thoroughly than politics or money. Fussell is not only eloquent and sharp-tongued, he is plain-spoken: in spite of a misstep when he creates a highly eccentric "X" class, his warts and all viewpoint is the kind only gifted social commentators and satirists can get away with

For instance, Fussell's core characteristics of class are on clear display in the 1957 novel PEYTON PLACE, set in small-town New England in the 1940s. In the opening chapters, shrewd and blunt author Grace Metalious points out that the top out-of-sight mill owner Harrington's house, the largest in town, is "screened from the street by tall trees and wide lawns," a perfect description of Fussell's top-out-of-sight class. Harrington's neighbor the newspaper owner/editor inherited a fortune and can treat his editorship of the paper as something of a lark, an exact example of Fussell's upper class which, to use Fussell's words, "inherits a lot of money [and] earns quite a bit too, usually from some attractive, if slight, work, without which it would feel bored and even ashamed." Also on the street lives the mere upper-middle-class, for example family doctor Matt Swain with his colonnaded, if bogus, "Southern-type" house.

Middle-class dress-shop owner Constance MacKenzie and daughter Allison live on the town's second-best street, whose houses were "simple, well-constructed one-family dwellings, most of them modeled on Cape Cod lines and painted white with green trim." Connie, in her prudery and her despair over her "dark" New York past, epitomizes what Fussell calls the middle class's mixture of "earnestness and psychic insecurity." And so it goes--Ted Carter, the town's high-school athletic hero, lives in a lower-middle-class area, his father a bookkeeper. Selena, Allison's best friend, lives in the "shacks," an unimproved area with no mod. cons. outside the town proper and thus immune from its statistics and politics. (Consider Fussell's "destitute" and "bottom out-of-sights".)

Of course, politics and technology do create a few changes: Fussell's middle class, which "used to seem the most deeply rooted in time and place," had by the Eighties become "the most rootless," shuttling from one bland suburb to another at the behest of their huge corporate employers (and perhaps today to establish any career, period). Fussell opines that "[b]ack in the 1940s there was still a real lower-middle class in this country, whose solid high-school education and addiction to 'planning' and 'saving' maintained it in a position above the working class." But it was "pauperized by the inflation of the 1960s and 1970s and transformed into the high-proletarian class," which is "in bondage to monetary policy, rip-off advertising, crazes and delusions, mass low culture, fast foods, and consumer schlock."

Fussell also believes, and I agree, that the most interesting class clash in this country is not where the newly wealthy bump into the aristocrats, as in England, but where the mere middle-class tries to enter the upper-middle-class, which "resists its incursions." A September 2001 piece I found in the Atlantic Monthly indicts the author of a book meant to help diverse students get into Ivy League schools but who nonetheless admits to being "personally most turned off by Junior Statesmen of America and by kids who started investment clubs at their schools." How typical an instance of snobbery by the haute against the so-called "pushy" middle class! But, Fussell exults of the upper-middle-class, "Who wouldn't want to be in a class so free, secure and amusing?" Since one of Fussell's class indicators is that the upper-middle-class house has "more rooms than you need," note the current trend toward white-collar families saddling themselves with outrageous mortgages to buy those huge new, highly Polyurethaned, suburban tract chateaux and to deck them with oriental rugs-emulating, if not quite achieving, upper-middle-class look and taste.

I introduced this book to two different book-discussion groups and noticed the same phenomena at each: (1) most people loved it and no one disliked it; (2) the funniest parts were the people we recognized at one remove ("suburbanites," "old money," etc.); and (3) the book will draw blood at least once when Fussell deals with YOUR case! You can count on it, so you'd better be a good sport! But readers revere it for its extremely--at times excruciatingly--erudite prose style. Consider the semiotics of Presidential dress: "The acute student of men's class signals could virtually infer Reagan's politics of Midwestern small-town meanness from his [cowboy] getups, just as one might deduce [Franklin] Roosevelt's politics of aristocratic magnanimity from such classy accessories as his naval cape, pince-nez, and cigarette holder." How true. How sad! And Crawford wears what it likes.

CLASS would be sad if it weren't so funny. But as one reviewer remarked, your own class will rise at least one notch just for having read it.

Tart humour and razor sharp accurate
By JIsaacs1962
I was introduced to CLASS in the 1980s by a college professor--he used it as the ONLY textbook in a course on social class in modern American society. Although the book is now somewhat dated, it remains pertinent to the study of social class in the USA as a keenly accurate depiction of American society at the time it was written.

"Splendid...Thom tells the story with humor and eloquence, and a thumping good tale it is, too."
THE WASHINGTON POST
In one generation, the Clark family of Virginia fought for our nation's independence, and explored, conquered, and settled the continent from sea to shining sea. This powerfully written book recreates the warm life of the family, the dangers of the battlefield, the grueling journeys across an untamed wilderness, and the soul-stirring Lewis and Clark Expedition. This mighty epic is a fitting tribute to the wisdom and courage of Ann Rogers Clark, her husband John, and the ten sons and daughters they nurtured and inspired.

This book should come with a warning.......
By Ron Spradlin
"Highly addictive, you may not be able to put this book down and lose a lot of sleep. You may neglect family, friends, or even your job." I've never read such spellbinding literature in my life. One read of this book and you will be "Hooked on Thom" for life. He is definitely one of our greatest authors. I had little knowledge outside of what little we were told in school about Lewis & Clark. WOW! What an eye-opener. I recommend this to anyone, but be advised you WILL get lost in the story.

Epic Tale of the Clark family
By J. Head
Thom is simply one of the best historical writers around.

This book, about George Rogers Clark during the Revolutionary War and his winning of the Northwest Territory, and the Lewis and Clark expedition is one of the best writtn, best researched, and most compelling reads you will find. I love fiction...but history on this scale is better than the most compelling fiction you will find. Suspence, action, intrigue and an absolute testament to the human spirit...and in particular the American spirit, you'll find it all within these pages.

Any person interested in American history, particularly the Revolutionary War and the period immediately thereafter, should read this novel. I heartely recommend Thom's other historical works as well.

Common sense solutions for new parents
By Farra
Much of the advice in this book is "old school" in a good way. As a new parent, I did not want to be terrified of every little common childhood illness or injury, but I wanted to be prepared with a plan to deal with these issues if they arise. My mom is a pediatric nurse, and I've found that much of the time, the pediatrician will have you bring your child in only to do nothing and have you either watch and wait or use something over the counter. So, now you've exposed your child to more germs by taking them in, and you've spent money you didn't need to spend. This is a great book for those who want a common sense approach to things that may pop up for babies and children. It is not a great book for those who want a medicine or procedure for everything or who think doctors are all gods that want to help everyone out of the goodness of their hearts.

Great resource
By Jocelyn
This is a great book. We are first time parents looking to do things in a more natural way and this book along with research really helped us be more confident in our decision. The book is laid out in a great format where you can refer back to subjects as they arise and make a informed decision. I would recommend it to new parents and ones who just want to take their children's health more into their own hands with confidence.

Wish I read this earlier!
By Gloria Andolina
This was recommended to me by my chiropractor when I was pregnant with my first child. I didn't read it until after my third baby, and wish I listened earlier! There is so much good information regarding basic child rearing without the overuse of your pediatrician and medications. Still pertinent to this era despite being written a few decades ago.

Fun, Interactive Reading Experience
By Comix
Long before online POV role playing we had Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming and Find Your Fate books ! The idea is simple but brilliant. Basically, you read a story about a character that is you. As the story progresses, you are asked to make decisions, some as simple as which direction to go and others as perilous as who to engage in combat. Based on your decision, you are told to flip forward to a designated page to continue reading. As a kid I loved the idea that I controlled my characters actions and every time I read the book I could make the story different. There are a few dead end choices (i.e. your character is killed) but most of the time you have an opportunity to correct your mistakes although it takes you on a longer and usually more dangerous path. The fun part is there is no one correct path but several possibilities to succeed as well as fail.
Now the best part, although Find Your Fate books came in a variety of licenses (Indiana Jones for one) and generic adventure environments (jungles, space, undersea) this one is part of a series based in the GI Joe universe !! What boy growing up in the eighties didn't want to be a Joe ? To literally "Live the adventure !" In each volume you are a new Joe with your own unique codename. So rather than being Duke or Snake Eyes, you get to be yourself as a Joe agent and work alongside and against your favorite characters.
Face off against Destro, Major Bludd, The Baroness and even Cobra Commander himself. One book in the series even includes Serpentor !
Even in my adult years I find these books to be entertaining and not nearly as predictable as you would suspect. Used or new, it's worth it for the content. Great, nostalgic fun !

An Incomplete Education, by Judy Jones, William Wilson

When it was originally published in 1987, An Incomplete Education became a surprise bestseller. Now this instant classic has been completely updated, outfitted with a whole new arsenal of indispensable knowledge on global affairs, popular culture, economic trends, scientific principles, and modern arts. Here’s your chance to brush up on all those subjects you slept through in school, reacquaint yourself with all the facts you once knew (then promptly forgot), catch up on major developments in the world today, and become the Renaissance man or woman you always knew you could be!

How do you tell the Balkans from the Caucasus? What’s the difference between fission and fusion? Whigs and Tories? Shiites and Sunnis? Deduction and induction? Why aren’t all Shakespearean comedies necessarily thigh-slappers? What are transcendental numbers and what are they good for? What really happened in Plato’s cave? Is postmodernism dead or just having a bad hair day? And for extra credit, when should you use the adjective continual and when should you use continuous?

An Incomplete Education answers these and thousands of other questions with incomparable wit, style, and clarity. American Studies, Art History, Economics, Film, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Science, and World History: Here’s the bottom line on each of these major disciplines, distilled to its essence and served up with consummate flair.

In this revised edition you’ll find a vitally expanded treatment of international issues, reflecting the seismic geopolitical upheavals of the past decade, from economic free-fall in South America to Central Africa’s world war, and from violent radicalization in the Muslim world to the crucial trade agreements that are defining globalization for the twenty-first century. And don’t forget to read the section A Nervous American’s Guide to Living and Loving on Five Continents before you answer a personal ad in the International Herald Tribune.

As delightful as it is illuminating, An Incomplete Education packs ten thousand years of culture into a single superbly readable volume. This is a book to celebrate, to share, to give and receive, to pore over and browse through, and to return to again and again.

Useful, in quite an unexpected way
By Nathaniel
I found this book to be entirely unlike what I expected. I was hoping for a book that gives snippets of information that adults could use in everyday life but are missing, regarding issues such as grammar, etiquette, law, and so forth. That is not what this book deals with.

Laid forth are the histories of various fields, with respect to the creators, movers, and shakers of the classics and masterpieces. While there is some trivia as such, what you learn from this book is not only how things such as economics, popular music, literature, etc., got started, but the major courses they traversed, i.e., WHY THINGS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE TODAY.

This book won't give you much to boast about at a cocktail party, but will give you an overall understanding of the state of the arts, politics, and the rest of the world in general, which may be of more use than what I had intended on buying in the first place.

An Armchair Education
By Nonetheless
Have you longed to be able to pick up a reference book for an instant, uncomplicated answer to that vexing question Do you shrink from discussing such topics as why all of Shakespeare's comedies are not "thigh slappers"? Or maybe you caught yourself referring to Evelyn Waugh as "she".

An Incomplete Education is just the sort of book that provides a framework in twelve areas of knowledge including the Arts, Philosophy, Political Science, World History, Music and much more. The original edition was published in 1987; the third updated and expanded edition came out in 2006. It's a book of knowledge that is also very well paced and entertaining. For example, in the literature section, they identify "twelve fictional characters with whom you should have at least a nodding acquaintance"; in political science: "What you need to know before answering a personals ad in the International Herald Tribune".

According to authors Judy Jones and William Wilson, "In a world of bits and bytes, of reruns and fast forwards, of information overloads , . . it feels good to be grounded."

Clearly, this is not a COMPLETE Education. To wit: the title. After all, how would anyone define what might be a COMPLETE education. Rather, the book is a useful volume which helped me to organize my thinking. It is a companion that sits on my bookshelf "at the ready" when questions arise, (what do I really understand about the difference between Shiites and Sunnis) or when a Lexicon is needed to settle the question of whether continual or continuous is the appropriate word. It is a great addition to anyone's library, or a gift for someone who asks a lot of questions. I found myself savoring--and chuckling over-- each section.

Fantastic but...
By Charles O'Meara
this is a great, great book, worth owning, worth reading.

my only complaint is that i somehow thought that there would be more updated stuff in it. i haven't found any difference between this version and the original which came out 20 years or more ago

Amazon.com Review
The Silmarillion is J.R.R. Tolkien's tragic, operatic history of the First Age of Middle-Earth, essential background material for serious readers of the classic Lord of the Rings saga. Tolkien's work sets the standard for fantasy, and this audio version of the "Bible of Middle-Earth" does The Silmarillion justice. Martin Shaw's reading is grave and resonant, conveying all the powerful events and emotions that shaped elven and human history long before Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf and all the rest embarked on their quests. Beginning with the Music of the Ainur, The Silmarillion tells a tale of the Elder Days, when Elves and Men became estranged by the Dark Lord Morgoth's lust for the Silmarils, pure and powerful magic jewels. Even the love between a human warrior and the daughter of the Elven king cannot defeat Morgoth, but the War of Wrath finally brings down the Dark Lord. Peace reigns until the evil Sauron recovers the Rings of Power and sets the stage for the events told in the Lord of the Rings. This is epic fantasy at its finest, thrillingly read and gloriously unabridged. (Running time: 14 hours, 6 CDs)

From Library Journal
The action of this volume predates even the above History titles as it relates the creation of Middle-earth, its beings and the coming of evil. Tolkien's Paradise Lost.

Tolkien's bible
By EA Solinas
Consider this -- J.R.R. Tolkien's fantastical epic "Lord of the Rings" is only the tail end of his invented history.

Yes, Tolkien spent most of his adult life crafting the elaborate, rich world of Middle-Earth, and coming up with a fictional history that spanned millennia. And "The Silmarillion" was the culmination of that work -- a Biblesque epic of fantasy history, stretching from the creation of the universe to the final bittersweet departure of the Elves from Middle-Earth.

A complete summary is impossible, because the book spans millennia and has one earth-shattering event after another. But it includes:
*The creation of Tolkien's invented pantheons of angelic beings under Eru Iluvatar, also known as God.
*How they sang the world into being, and the creation of Elves, Men, and Dwarves (hobbits are not really covered).
*The legendary love story of Beren and Luthien, a mortal Man and an Elf maiden who gives up her immortality for the man she loves.
*The attempts of the demonic Morgoth and his servant Sauron (remember him?) to corrupt the world.
*Feanor and his sons, and the terrible oath that led to Elves slaying one another.
*The Silmarils, the glorious gems made from the the essence of the Two Trees that generated the world's light.
*Elves of just about any kind -- bad, mad, dangerous, good, sweet, brave, and so forth.
*The creation of the many Rings of Power -- and the One Ring of Sauron.
*And finally, the quest of the Ringbearer, Frodo Baggins, and the final battle that would decide the fate of Middle-Earth.

If you ever were confused by a reference or name mentioned in "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings," then chances are that "The Silmarillion" can enlighten you about what it meant. What is Numenor? Who are the Valar? Who is that Elbereth Gilthoniel that people keep praying to? How did the Elf/Dwarf feud originally begin? And how exactly is Elrond related to Aragorn?

For the most part, it focuses on the Elves and their history, especially where it intertwines with the history of Men -- although Dwarves and Hobbits don't get nearly as much ink devoted to them. But in that story, Tolkien weaves together stories of earth-shattering romance, haunting tragedy, gory violence, good versus evil, the rise and fall of cities and kingdoms, and much more.

However, it's not really written like Tolkien's other works. It's more like the Bible, the Mabinogion or the Eddas. Tolkien didn't get as "into" the heads of his characters here, and wrote a more detailed, sprawling narrative that would have needed countless books to explore in depth. But while his prose is more formal and distant here, it still has that haunting starlit beauty ("Blue was her raiment as the unclouded heaven, but her eyes were grey as the starlit evening; her mantle was sewn with golden flowers, but her hair was dark as the shadows of twilight").

It's clear to see, while reading this, the extent of Tolkien's passion for his invented history. Someone who had a lack of enthusiasm could not have spent much of his adult life writing, revising, and polishing a history that never was. It's also almost frighteningly imaginative and real: It isn't too hard to imagine that these things could actually have happened. In a genre clogged with shallow sword'n'sorcery, Tolkien's coherent, carefully-written backstory is truly unique.

Casual Tolkien fans probably won't be able to stick it out. But those who appreciate the richness and scope of Middle-Earth should examine "The Silmarillion," a sprawling fictional history full of beauty, tragedy and love. A work of literary genius.

A fantasy classic, but not for everyone
By Larry Bridges
"The Silmarillion" is perhaps the most unique and difficult-to-explain book I have read. It is among the books I love the most, but this might not be the case if I had not read it in a bizarre way that I can hardly recommend to anyone else, and yet may be the best way to read it. For ten or twelve years I skimmed through "The Silmarillion," "The Hobbit," "The Lord of the Rings," and many of Tolkien's posthumous books (many of which present the stories of "The Silmarillion" in different forms which Tolkien wrote at various times in his life) without reading the books verbatim. Only in the last twelve months have I read these books all the way through.
This was a wise way of approaching Tolkien's most famous works because of the odd nature of "The Silmarillion," which must be understood by anyone desiring to enjoy it. "The Silmarillion" is not a "novel," as are "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" (Tolkien preferred the word "romance" to "novel" for LotR). "The Silmarillion" is well described by the subtitle on the front of the jacket of the Ted Nasmith-illustrated edition: "The Myths and Legends of Middle-earth". "The Silmarillion" is the equivalent, for the imaginary world in which "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" take place, of a work like Hamilton's or Bulfinch's "Mythology". It does not tell one single story; rather it tells many stories in a briefer form, almost as though the stories are being synopsized rather than told. In a real sense "The Silmarillion" is a greater work than even "The Lord of the Rings" could ever be, since it contains not one but several stories with as much power and grandeur as that of LotR.
However, much of the book is written in the style of a tome of history, setting out the vast historical framework within which these unforgettable stories unfold, and thus seems dry and soporific to many readers. Moreover, large numbers of characters, often with similar names (seven important Elven characters have names starting with F, and six of them start with the letters "Fin"), are presented without space for them to be strongly characterized, so that the reader may be unable to become as engaged with them as with Frodo, Sam or Gandalf. This is where my bizarre manner of reading the book came in handy: I became familiar with all the characters over my years of skimming, and knew precisely who they were and how they were connected to each other when I finally read the whole book. Moreover, since I had often skimmed "The Silmarillion" before reading "The Lord of the Rings," I could appreciate the many references back to the former work in the latter. Although "The Silmarillion" was not published until many years after LotR, Tolkien had written all the stories that make up "The Silmarillion" before writing LotR. Many of LotR's references to past events, which contribute greatly to the impression it gives of taking place in a real world, are references to events told in "The Silmarillion". (No Hobbits appear or are mentioned in "The Silmarillion" until the last three pages of the book, when the events of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" are briefly described at the end of a section that explains how the events of "The Silmarillion" ultimately led to the events of those books.)
In my opinion, the creation myth with which "The Silmarillion" opens is one of the most intellectually and emotionally satisfying creation stories I have ever read; the chapter "Of Turin Turambar" presents a heroic tragedy comparable in grandeur to a Wagner opera and in depth and power of sorrow to a tragic opera such as "Il Trovatore" or "Tosca"; and the chapter "Of Beren and Luthien" presents Tolkien's very best story of all, perhaps the most unforgettable tale of love and adventure written in the twentieth century. But for readers to appreciate these treasures, they must be aware in advance of the unusual nature of "The Silmarillion," and not expect a fantasy adventure novel, a mere "prequel" to "The Lord of the Rings". These are the stories that are told in Frodo's world; they are to Frodo, Sam and Strider what "The Lord of the Rings" is to us: a saga of a vanished world of heartbreaking beauty, glimmers of which we can still see if we look hard enough.
(Some of Ted Nasmith's illustrations are better than others. The image of Luthien dancing in the wood is one of the best Tolkien-inspired paintings I've ever seen, especially since it leaves the ineffable beauty of Luthien's face to our imaginations. On the other hand, Galadriel's brother Finrod is not depicted as nearly good-looking enough in the painting of him singing by the campfire of the first Men to come into Beleriand.)

Interesting
By D. Arno
Reads like the bible in the beginning of every chapter and like the lord of the rings 3/4 of the way through each chapter. The names of any of the valar would make awesome band names. The nonsensical-sounding LOTR-speak in the movies makes perfect sense after reading this. names, origins, geographic regions, the dark feeling covering everything, all explained.

Wonder where I've been that I missed this book till now!!??
By CrazyAboutBooks
Oh gosh what can one say about a book that is so insightful and factually sound? I commend Ms. Lappe for pulling together all the data contained in this book. She does not preach nor try to change anyone's mind. The info contained in the book reminded me of that old line "just the facts please." I believe she focused on protein because it is "lack of protein if we don't eat meat" (not vitamins, minerals, iron, etc.) that scare people about giving up meat. Ms. Lappe includes charts and facts and figures -- all kinds of information -- to reassure the reader that plant eaters can in fact get adequate protein from veggies -- minus the artery-clogging fat. Certainly, one gets plenty of vitamins and other nutients from plant/grain foods. Perhaps we bring our personal baggage along when reading such a book. I believe it is wasteful to feed grain to animals when people worldwide are starving and I doubt the earth can continue to support such wastefulness. So I welcome books such as this. Each person should think over the issues then decide. If one decides to stop eating meat or to cut back on the amount eaten, this book is loaded with information to help with food combining in the plant/grain families to make sure one will get the necessary nutrients. The recipes are included to help us along, and I will be referring to them and this book often in the coming weeks (or months!) Ms. Lappe's philosophy gets 5 stars too. I highly recommend this book.

Chapter 1

“Watch where you’re going, qwot!”

The merchant glared down at the slim, olive-skinned youth and made a show of readjusting his barely rumpled clothing.

“Your pardon, noble sir,” the youngster replied politely. “I did not see you in the press of the crowd.” This was at once truth and lie. Flinx hadn’t seen the overbearing entrepreneur, but he had sensed the man’s belligerence seconds before the latter had swerved intentionally to cause the collision.

Although his still poorly understood talents had been immensely enriched several months ago by his encounter with the Krang—that awesome semisentient weapon of the now-vanished masters of the galaxy, the Tar-Aiym—they were as inconsistent as ever. The experience of acting as an organic catalyst for the colossal device had almost killed both him and Pip. But they had survived and he, at least, had been changed in ways as yet uncomprehended.

Lately he had found that at one moment he could detect the thoughts of the King himself off in Drallar’s palace, while in the next even the minds of those standing in close proximity stayed shut tight as a miser’s purse. This made for numerous uncertainties, and oftentimes Flinx found himself cursing the gift, as its capriciousness kept him in a constant state of mental imbalance. He was like a child clinging desperately to the mane of a rampaging devilope, struggling to hang on at the same time he was fighting to master the bucking mount.

He shifted to go around the lavishly clad bulk, but the man moved to block his path. “Children need to learn how to mind their betters,” he smirked, obviously unwilling, like Flinx, to let the incident pass.

Flinx could sense the frustration in the man’s mind, and sought deeper. He detected fuzzy hints of a large business transaction that had failed just this morning. That would explain the man’s frustration, and his apparent desire to find someone to take it out on. As Flinx considered this development, the man was making a great show of rolling up his sleeves to reveal massive arms. His frustration faded beneath the curious stares of the shifting crowd of traders, hawkers, beggars, and craftsmen who were slowing and beginning to form a small eddy of humanity in the round-the-clock hurricane of the Drallarian marketplace.

“I said I was sorry,” Flinx repeated tensely.

A blocky fist started to rise.

“Sorry indeed. I think I’m going to have to teach you . . .” The merchant halted in his stride, the threatening fist abruptly frozen in midair. His face rapidly turned pale and his eyes seemed fixed on Flinx’s far shoulder.

A head had somehow emerged from beneath the loose folds of the youth’s cape. Now it regarded the merchant with a steady, unblinking gaze that held the quality of otherworld death, the flavor of frozen methane and frostbite. In itself the skull was tiny and unimpressive, scaled and unabashedly reptilian. Then more of the creature emerged, revealing that the head was attached to a long cylindrical body. A set of pleated membranous wings opened, beat lazily at the air.

“Sorry,” the merchant found himself mumbling, “it was all a mistake . . . my fault, really.” He smiled sickly, looked from left to right. The eyes of the small gathering stared back dispassionately.

It was interesting how the man seemed to shrink into the wall of watchers. They swallowed him up as neat and clean as a grouper would an ambling angelfish. That done, the motionless ranks blended back into the moving stream of humanity.

Flinx relaxed and reached up to scratch the flying snake under its leathery snout. “Easy there, Pip,” he whispered, thinking warm relaxing thoughts at his pet. “It’s nothing, settle down now.”

Reassured, the minidrag hissed sibilantly and slid back beneath the cape folds, its pleated wings collapsing flat against its body. The merchant had quickly recognized the reptile. A well-traveled individual, he knew that there was no known antidote for the poison of the Alaspin miniature dragon.

“Maybe he learned whatever lesson he had in mind to give us,” Flinx said. “What say we go over to Small Symm’s for a beer and some pretzels for you. Would you like that, summm?”

The snake summmed back at him.

Nearby buried within the mob, an obese, unlovely gentleman thanked a gratified goldsmith as he pocketed a purchase indifferently made. This transaction had served the purpose of occupying time and covering up his true focus of attention, which had not been the just-bought bauble.

Two men flanked him. One was short and sleek, with an expression like a wet weasel. The other showed a torso like a galvanized boiler, and half a face. His one eye twitched persistently as he stared after the retreating figure of Flinx, while his small companion eagerly addressed the purchaser of the tiny gold-and-pearl piano.

“Did you see the look on that guy’s face, Challis?” he asked the plump man. “That snake’s a hot death. Nothin’ was said to us about anything like that. That big idiot not only saved his own life, but mine and Nanger’s too.”

The one-eye nodded.

“Ya, you’re goin’ to have to find someone else for this bit of dirty stuff.” His short companion looked adamant.

The fat merchant remained calm, scratched at one of his many chins. “Have I been ungenerous? Since you both are on permanent retainer to me, I technically owe you nothing for this task.” He shrugged. “But if it is a question of more money . . .”

The sleek weasel shook his head. “You can buy my service, Challis, but not my life. Do you know what happens if that snake’s venom hits you in the eyes? No antivenom known will keep you alive for more than sixty seconds.” He kicked at the gravel and dirt underfoot, still moist from the regular morning rain. “No, this isn’t for me and not for Nanger neither.”

“Indeed,” the man with half a face agreed solemnly. He sniffed and nodded in the direction of the now departed youth. “What’s your obsession with the boy, anyway? He’s not strong, he’s not rich, and he’s not particularly pretty.”

“It’s his head I’m interested in, not his body,” sighed Challis, “though this is a matter of my pleasure.” Puffing like a leaky pillow, he led them through the bustling, shouting crowd. Humans, thranx, and representatives of a dozen other commercial races slid easily around and past them as though oiled, all intent on errands of importance.

“It’s my Janus jewel. It bores me.”

The smaller man looked disgusted. “How can anyone rich enough to own a Janus jewel be bored?”

“Oh, but I am, Nolly-dear, I am.”

Nanger made a half-smirk. “What’s the trouble, Challis? Your imagination failing you?” He laughed, short, stentorian barks.

Challis grinned back at him. “Hardly that, Nanger, but it seems that I have not the right type of mind to produce the kind of fine, detailed resolution the jewel is capable of. I need help for that. So I’ve been at work these past months looking for a suitable mental adept, trying to find a surrogate mind of the proper type to aid in operating the jewel. I’ve paid a lot of money for the right information,” he finished, nodding at a tall Osirian he knew. The avian clacked its beak back at him and made a gesture with its graceful, ostrichlike neck, its periscope form weaving confidently through the crowd.

Nanger paused to buy a thisk cake, and Challis continued his explanation as they walked on.

“So you see why I need that boy.”

Nolly was irritated now. “Why not just hire him? See if he’ll participate willingly?”

Challis looked doubtful. “No, I don’t think that would work out, Nolly-dear. You’re familiar with some of my fantasies and likes?” His voice had turned inhumanly calm and empty. “Would you participate voluntarily?”

Nolly looked away from suddenly frightening pupils. In spite of his background, he shuddered. “No,” he barely whispered, “no, I don’t guess that I would. . . .”

“Hello, lad,” boomed Small Symm—the giant was incapable of conversing in less than a shout. “What of your life and what do you hear from Malaika?”

Flinx sat on one of the stools lined up before the curving bar, ordered spiced beer for himself and a bowl of pretzels for Pip. The flying snake slid gracefully from Flinx’s shoulder and worked his way into the wooden bowl of trapezoidal dough. This action was noted by a pair of wide-eyed unsavory types nearby, who promptly vacated their seats and hastily made for the rearmost booths.

“I’ve had no contact with Malaika for quite a while, Symm. I’ve heard he’s attending to business outsystem.”

Flinx’s wealthy merchant friend had enabled him to quit performing his personal sideshow, having provided him with a substantial sum for his aid in exploring the Tar-Aiym world of the Krang. Much of the money had gone to set up Flinx’s adoptive mother, Mother Mastiff, in a well-stocked shop in one of Drallar’s better market districts. Muttering at her capriciousness, the old woman had rescued Flinx as a child from the slave-seller’s block, and had raised him. She was the only parent he had ever known. She muttered still, but with affection.

“As a matter of fact,” he went on, sipping at the peppery brew, “Malaika wanted me to go with him. But while I respect the old hedonist, he’d eventually get ideas about putting me in a ...

Orphan Star is a worthly sequel to The Tar-Aiym Krang
By Adam Missner
Orhan Star is the sequel to The Tar-Aiym Krang. We find Flinx, no longer a poor orphan, chasing a merchant to Hivehom and Terra in search of information about his parentage. His chase leads him to Ulru-Ujurr, a planet under Edict from the United Church, ostentisbly because it contains a highly intelligent telepathic race. There, with some typical Foster excitement, a battle is fought and won. Orphan Star is a little slow in the middle, but the exciting and illuminating ending makes up for it. Foster's new aliens are very interesting and would make a good study for a novel on their own.

Flinx on a Quest to Find his Parents!
By Jeff Van Gastel
The book "Orphan Star" focuses on Flinx's quest to find out who his parents are. Flinx is back in Drallar, after the events in the book, "The Tar-Aiym Krang". He is soon kidnapped my a powerful merchant, Conda Challis and his mysterious daughter, Mahnahmi. Flinx and Pip escape from the clutches of Challis, but not before Challis drops a huge hint of Flinx's parents. Thus starts a chase throughout the book, of Flinx attempting to find Challis and confront him with the knowledge of who his parents are. The chase leads to Terra (Earth), where we find out is Flinx's birthplace. He makes it to the United Church Headquarters where he meets a female Thranx, Sylzenzuzex.. We find out she is the niece of Truzenzuzex, who was in the book "The Tar-Aiym Krang". Eventually, the chase leads to an outlying world, Ulra-Ujurr, which is under Church Edict for no one to enter. Does Flinx find out who his parents are, and how he received his "talents"?

Alan Dean Foster once again does an excellent job of describing the many characters and locations in detail. He also furthers the story of Flinx and Pip, and leaves you wanting to learn more about his lineage, and what adventures he will be on next.

I really enjoyed this novel and especially Flinx
By Michael P. Long
I've never read this series before, but got the audiobook for the third novel about a boy named Flinx and his killer flying mini-dragon Pip. He is first kidnapped by a rather evil businessman who wants to exploit Flinx's mental powers. He then sets off on a quest to learn more about his parents and where he comes from.

I really enjoyed this novel and especially Flinx. Even though he is 17 years old, he comes off as extremely cunning, wise, and lucky. It reminds me a lot of the Artemis Fowl series. It is just good fun to follow a character who is always one step ahead of everyone else. I also found the alien race in the last half of the book to very fascinating and unique. Even though the book is almost 40 years old now, you could hardly ever tell it which is a testament to the author's imagination. The only thing that might perhaps date it is the church's use of microfilm for record keeping.

I don't have too much negative to say except perhaps the plot could have had better pacing. It goes kind of slow in the beginning and then near the end its just going too fast for belief. Also since I came in without reading the prior books, it did take me more time to understand what was going on.

The narration was really very great. The only time the narration was a bit off was when the narrator was doing the voice of an annoying little girl. Otherwise, no issues.

I'm looking forward to reading future novels in this series!

NOTE: I received this for free in exchange for an honest review.
