It's in this book that Garfield celebrates his 10th birthday! Ten years of laughing with the cat who can make us chuckle the most! Poor Garfield doesn't do well with birthdays, unfortunately, so he dreads this one. He does discover the joys of Chinese food, however. He also makes the acquaintance of the "sand person", who dumps a truckload of sand onto Garfield to help him fall asleep. Only Jim Davis can come up with these characters!

Not one of Garfield's better books from the mid to late 80's
By Darian Dennison
Man I love garfield cause he is a very funny cat and he does such things as eating Jon's lasanga, being mean to Odie and destroying Jon's chair, there's a hilarious part when Odie drive's Jon's car inside the house but other than that, it's not a classic like some of Garfield's other books of this era.
Overall recommended.

In my book this is 10 stars!
By Peter Dykhuis
I can't say enough good about this book. As a companion resource to the any of Tolkien's novels based in mythical Middle Earth this is the perfect companion. This isn't a series of essays and it doesn't try to explain the twists of plot in all of Tolkien's books. What this book does is give complete, sourced and easy to find definitions for nearly ALL of the terms, places and people in Middle Earth.
Ever wonder what the difference between the Maiar and the Istari? Want to know a brief history of Morgoth, the original poison in Middle Earth? This is the book for you. I had to work VERY hard to find any obscure term not included in this book. Not only is this book complete but it is cross-referenced and multiple terms are listed. For instance both Melkor and Morgoth are listed separately so you will find him regardless of which name you look him up under.
What a wonderful piece of work. This book has furthered my reading enjoyment of the Lord of the Rings and opened the Silmarillion to me in a entirely new light. A definite A+ recommendation.

This is the all-time best Tolkien resource
By Michael Martinez
I feel a bit of nostalgia whenever I open this book because it takes me back more than twenty years to when I was first beginning to study Tolkien's world. Robert Foster's glossary is now sadly outdated because so many informative books have been published by Christopher Tolkien, but none of the tertiary sources written by other Tolkien researchers even come close to Foster's dedicated achievement.
Unlike some early Tolkien indexers, Foster usually refrains from mixing his opinions with the facts he is reporting. His occasional guesses and interpretations may be wrong but given the information available when the book was written they are solid and well-considered. Many more recent books have contained unforgivably egregious errors because those later authors had access to material Foster didn't.
The sources that Foster covers include some of Tolkien's private correspondence, and the research has been vindicated by Humphrey Carpenter's Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. Foster's other sources include The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Pauline Baynes' 1969 map of Middle-earth (on which she was advised by Tolkien himself), and the first edition of The Road Goes Ever On.
The most impressive section, however, is Foster's attempt to devise a chronology of the First Age. Such a chronology could be achieved with any hope of accuracy only after Christopher Tolkien published The War of the Jewels in 1994, 16 years after Foster published the Complete Guide. Foster's guesswork was off by no more than a few years. I still glance through his chronology for a quick reference when I just need to be reminded of critical dates.
My only regret is that this book was never updated, although I heard a rumor that HarperCollins was looking for someone to revise it. It would be good to see a much fuller guide published, but only if Foster's impeccable standard was adhered to.

Illustrated 2003 hardcover edition lacks references
By Amazon Customer
I was looking to purchasing this edition for a long time. I finally received it only to be disappointed. Nothing bad can be said of the quality of the printing, the feel & thickness of the paper or the beautiful Nasmith paintings, which are all first class. Before ordering this edition I browsed the content of the paperback edition using Amazon.com's LOOK NOW feature. You see annotated references at the end of each entry, showing which book (i.e., Silmarillion) & page number(s.) My gripe is that this 2003 edition, while presented beautifully is missing the KEY FEATURE I looked forward to the most, which is linking any subject by all books & pages referencing that particular topic. So the main reason to get this book is missing! Maybe I woud have been better off getting the 2003 hardcover & 2001 softcover edition for the notations along with a book of Tolkien artwork, like "Realms of Tolkien: Images of Middle-earth." Hopefully this review will help people select the exact edition to get the features they want.

Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy, by Eric Berne

Dr. Eric Berne, as the originator of transactional analysis, has attained recognition for developing one of the most innovative approaches to modern psychotherapy. Bit it wasn't until his Games People Play became an international bestseller that his method achieved wide popularity. In his writings and teachings, until his death in 1970, Dr. Berne laid the groundwork for a rational method for understanding and analyzing human behavior, which is gaining increasing application in modern therapy as one of the most promising new development in the mental health field. Dr. Berne first outlined the principles of transactional analysis in Transactional Analysis In Psychotherapy, now a classic in the field; later, he discussed its application to group dynamics in The Structure and Dynamics of Organizations and Groups (1963); its use in analyzing games in the celebrated bestseller Games People Play (1964); its application to clinical practice in Principles of Group Treatment (1966): and a summary of the theory in popular form in A Layman's Guide to Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis (1868). His last book written before his death was What Do You Say After You Say Hello?

BERNE'S FIRST FORMULATION OF THE IDEAS HE MADE POPULAR LATER
By Steven H Propp
Eric Berne (1910-1970; born as Eric Bernstein, he changed his name in 1943) was a Canadian-born psychiatrist, who wrote many popular (even "trendy," in the 1960s) books such as A Layman's Guide to Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, Structure and Dynamics of Organizations and Groups, Games People Play, Principles of Group Treatment, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1961 book, "This book outlines a unified system of individual and social psychiatry as it has been taught during the past five years at the Group Therapy Seminar at Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco [etc.]... This approach is now being used by therapists and group workers in various institutional settings, as well as in private practice, to deal with almost every type of mental, emotional, and characterological disturbance. The growing interest in and wider dissemination of its principles have indicated a need for this book." (Pg. 11)

He says in the Introduction, "An ego state may be described phenomenologically as a coherent system of feelings related to a given subject, and operationally as a set of coherent behavior patterns; or pragmatically, as a system of feelings which motivates a related set of behavior patterns." (Pg. 17) He adds, "Colloquially, these types of ego states are referred to as Parent, Adult, and Child... Certain repetitive sets of social maneuvers appear to combine both defensive and gratificatory functions. Such maneuvers are colloquially called pastimes and games... More complex operations are based on an extensive unconscious life plan which is called a 'script,' after the theatrical scripts which are intuitive derivatives of these psychological dramas. These three terms 'pastime,' 'game,' and 'script,' form the vocabulary of transactional analysis." (Pg. 23)

He asserts, "In structural terms, a 'happy' person is one in whom important aspects of the Parent, the Adult, and the Child are syntonic with each other." (Pg. 57) He explains, "The Parent is the guide for ethical aspirations... the Adult is concerned with the earthly realities of objective living; and the Child is a purgatory, and sometimes a hell, for archaic tendencies." (Pg. 60) He suggests, "Transactional analysis is best done in therapy groups." (Pg. 90) He states, "a game can be defined transactionally as a set of ulterior transactions... with a concealed motivation... a series of moves with a snare or 'gimmick.'" (Pg. 104)

Later, he advises, "The trichotomy [Parent, Adult, Child] must be taken quite literally. It is just as if each patient were three different people. Until the therapist can perceive it this way, he is not ready to use this system effectively." (Pg. 235) He summarizes, "It is quite possible that the personality structure so far given might be adequate for a therapeutic lifetime, just as it served the writer well during the first phase of clinical formulation of these ideas." (Pg. 191)

Berne later presented this material in a much more "popular" style in 'Games People Play,' but this earlier, more "clinical" presentation provides great insight into his ideas during their development.

Stepping Out of the Game
By James A. Altman
Like so many others, I found Eric Berne's work incredibly liberating. Resisting the games people play and recognizing, not only the inner child, but the inner adult, and the inner parent in myself and others has made transaction and interaction much more sane for me. A great work!

The Prequel to Games People Play
By watzizname
Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy © 1961 (TAinP) ****½ +
Games People Play: The Basic Handbook of Transactional Analysis. © 1964 (GPP) ****¾ +
Scripts People Live: Transactional Analysis of Life Scripts © 1974 (SPL) *****

All three of these books have been around for a long time, and all three are well worth reading. I was persuaded to review them together by the first sentence in the preface of GPP: "This book is primarily designed to be a sequel to my book Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy, but has been planned so that it can be read and understood independently." In the years between writing them, it is obvious that Dr. Berne gained valuable experience in one or (more likely) both TA and writing. I am sure I would have found TAinP much tougher going had I not read GPP first, and I recommend you, too, read them in reverse order. You might even consider reading Claude Steiner's SPL first; Dr. Steiner has surpassed even his mentor, Dr. Berne, in making the concepts of TA accessible to the lay reader.

You don't have to have serious emotional problems, or have a friend or loved one who does, to benefit from reading these books; they will help you to understand yourself and others better. They will also teach you to recognize the games salespeople try to play with you, so that you can avoid becoming a victim thereof. And if you or a friend or loved one is contemplating psychotherapy or in need thereof, these books can help in choosing a therapist who will go for the cure rather than the maintenance of the problem. The value of making the right choice can hardly be overstated. It is SO much better to learn to become an ex-neurotic or ex-psychotic than to learn to be a better neurotic or a better psychotic!

Dr. Berne found that a person is almost always in one of three ego states, which he called Parent, Adult, and Child. Dr. Berne deliberately chose familiar names, instead of jargon such as superego, id, exteropsyche, archaeopsyche, etc. As Dr. Steiner put it, "He rejected the usual psychiatric practice of using one language in speaking with people and another in speaking with psychiatric colleagues. As he developed the new concepts of his theory, he used, in every instance, words which were immediately understandable to most people."* Dr. Berne and his students believed in demystifying patients and the general public, rather than snowing us.

Whichever ego state is awake and in control is said to be cathected. (Rarely, two or all three ego states may be partially cathected at the same time, or one or both of the others may be awake but not cathected, and when one is very deeply asleep or in a coma, probably no ego state is cathected.) Roughly speaking, the Parent is the ego state in which one nurtures or criticizes another, the Adult contemplates and processes factual information and solves problems, and the Child has fun or reacts to criticism. Each ego state is appropriate for some situations and inappropriate for others. The nurturing Parent and the critical Parent are both needed in taking care of children or invalids, but the critical Parent can `go hog wild' and become the always-inappropriate pig Parent, which concentrates on destructive, rather than constructive criticism. Irrational prejudices, such as racism and sexism, are functions of the pig Parent, as is the Puritan's `haunting fear that someone, somewhere, might be having a good time.'

The Adult is responsible for using factual knowledge, reason, and intuition to solve life's problems. Everyone needs, at times, a well-functioning Adult, and virtually everyone is born with one, but one's Adult can become contaminated by one or both of the other ego states. The Child-contaminated Adult too often engages in `wishful thinking,' while the Parent-contaminated Adult typically accepts as factual the pig Parent's irrational prejudices. The pig parent may even virtually suppress the Adult with a script injunction of mindlessness such as "Don't think!"

The Child is cathected when one is having fun. Enjoyment of play and of lovemaking are functions of the Child; it is the Child which makes life worth living. Sometimes the pig Parent manages to suppress the Child with a script injunction of joylessness: "Don't have fun!"

Once again, Hardy displays deep thoughts on the workings of magic. The third in the series flicks the protagonists through a series of parallel worlds, each providing a clue toward solving the riddle.
The characters are appealing and the description of various worlds and their inhabitants is well done.
What has happened to this author? I bought Riddle several years ago and would like to purchase more of his books.

A Logical Conclusion
By Amazon Customer
I read the first in the series - Master of the Five Magics - as a kid. Liking it so much, I bought the other two (the second being Secret of the Sixth Magic). Looking back I think I stumbled a little on the second book and never got to read this final book, which was truly a shame.

This book is, I believe, the best of the three, with Master of the Five Magics being a very close second.

The author took much more time in this book to examine more closely the characters and personalities of the main characters - Kestrel, Phoebe, Astron and Nimbia....Kestrel and Astron above all.

In a nutshell, Kestrel, a glib (for want of a better word) con man, tries to fob inferior wood onto the wizard Phoebe. While testing the wood, she summons forth a demon like no other - Astron, the one who walks (named so because, unlike other djinns, he has no wings, nor can he hurl bolts of lightning). The demon, however, is on a quest for his prince, Elezar, to seek out Alodar the Archmage, who bested Elezar in a battle of wills years ago. For Elezar is in trouble - if he cannot solve a riddle posed by another demon prince, he must surrender everything...and in doing so, the one agent acting in the interests of humans by diverting the attention of demons elsewhere, would be gone. As such, the Archmage sends Kestrel, Astron and Phoebe on a quest to help solve the riddle.

I found myself wondering, about halfway through the book, whether this was merely the author's excuse to create and describe new worlds and different creatures, whether there really was a solution to the riddle. And yet, I should not have doubted - the author once again leaves subtle clues throughout the journey, and uses the events to expand the characters, making them more endearing, if you will. The dramatic conclusion was exciting to say the least and draws on the understandings of each other for the main characters to struggle against seemingly impossible odds.

A great read, which I'd thoroughly recommend.

But as the other revier mentioned, there is one greater riddle still unanswered - what happened to this author??

Very well written
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Kestrel is a man who learned to trust no one, and loves conning the powerful. Astron is a demon who can only think in terms of logic and list, but whose prince has sent him on a quest to answer a strange riddle. Phoebe is the only female wizard around, but she's rich and used to buying everything she could possibly want. And, Nimbia is a queen of the fey, one who is used to there being a place for everyone and everyone in their place - with her on top. Together, these four find themselves catapulted from universe to universe, pursued and trying to stay one step ahead of death and disaster. There's a riddle that needs an answer, and these four mean to find it!

I must say that I didn't know what to expect when I picked up this book, but I was very pleasantly surprised by what I found. I like a good fantasy story that takes place within one or more alternate realities with their own rules - the more exotic, the better. Well, a major theme of this book is the nature of the various alternate universes that the characters encounter; each different (radically so) and yet internally consistent, and very interesting.

But, even beyond that "quirk" of the story, I found the book to be very well written. I liked the character and the various races, and found the story to be quite interesting and suspenseful. I must admit that I did not read the other books of Lyndon Hardy's Magics trilogy, but now I wish I had. I enjoyed this book (yes, it stands alone beautifully) and highly recommend it!

At Last.

The magnificence of Rob Inglis' dramatization, both with respect to its place in the Tolkien Legend and in comparision to the present state of the spoken theatre, is quite simply ineffible. Here presented is THE ONLY completely unabriged reading of the Lord of the Rings to be found, and to commuters like me, it represents a long awaited opportunity to become aquianted with the work of a genius without fear of losing precious shards of his masterpiece to the whim of an editor. Worth every moment of the 20 hour listening time, from the endearing character voices to the hearty singing of songs and chanting of poetry that is sure to linger in your mind throughout the day. A purely wonderful experience for both Tolkien Veterans and the uninitiated alike.

The Two Towers
By Bwhami
It's the Lord of the Rings part two. When you read the book you realize how much was left out of the movie. Tolkien was a great story teller, with a mind that knew no bounds. The only draw back to the tale is that he did not alternate the story lines. The Frodo and Sam part is one section of the book and the Gandalf and the others is another part. I would have liked it a bit better if the stories were intertwined and he alternated the separate adventures. This is a great timeless tale that is worth rereading.
