A FAVORITE BOOK!
By Amazon Customer
Touch the Sun will bring you in contact with some of your favorite characters from previous books.

This is my all-time Favorite Book. Lion Hampshire has planned his future out without any thoughts to Love. Due to his reputation of a rake, Lion must marry quickly so he agrees to an arranged marriage. Meagan is the daughter of a wealthy Virginia planter, who has lost her wealth to pay the debts of her parents. She schemes to become the maid of her best friend, Pricilla Wade,so that she doesn't have to go live with her spinster aunt. It just so happens that Priscilla agrees to an arranged marriage with Lion Hampshire. Priscilla is vain, whiny, and a bit spoiled. Meagan and Lion are thrown together to create a maddening entertaining read. You will laugh from page to page as Meagen puts Lion through several lessons about love.

Prominent figures in history, such as George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin play some endearing roles in this book.

Cynthia Wright's novels are always a pleasure to read as an historical and romantic value. The best of the best, don't miss this one!

Wonderful Read!
By Mollie Oleyar
An absolutely wonderful read. Even the second time around.
Lion is a misguided hero with an ambitious ill choreographed plan to achieve a seat in the budding nations Congress.
Formerly a headstrong free-spirit with wealth to spare, the lovely and destitute Meagan hatches a wild scheme to pose as a lady's maid to her best friend.
Match one eye on the prize man with one nothing left to lose woman and what do they get...? Electric chemistry...sleepless nights...clandestine meetings...hearts and heads in turmoil.
Meagan steamrolls through Lion's life and blows it asunder. He begins to question everything he thought he wanted while struggling to stick to his goals.
Poor, poor Lion, luckily he gets his priorities in order after Meagan shows him the way.

Blah!!
By April
I was quite disappointed by this novel. Velvet has been completely spoiled by her doting parents! In an age where arranged marriages are the norm, we hear Velvet whining, "Why won't anyone consider MYYYYYYY feelings??" And I lost count of how many times I read "I'll not marry without love and without my parents here!!"
I liked Alex during his courtship of Velvet, in which he wins her "love" without her knowing who he really is. After that he went nuts, first kidnapping his betrothed wife and then taking Alanna for his mistress. What an a**!!
Like some other reviewers, I also thought Velvet should have stayed in India. Akbar taught her the meaning of true love (while introducing her to some very kinky sex!!)
I was amused by Small's description of the loss of Velvet's virginity, when Alex can't even last long enough to satisfy her!!! It seemed to be representative of most women's "first time"! Quite a change from the usual multi-orgasmic virgins we usually read about.
I also chuckled at the end when Skye finally got her revenge on Navarre...but overall, I thought this book was not up to Small's usual writing.

Should be called "This Heartache of Mine"
By Celeste M. Harmer
Since I'm a diehard Bertrice Small fan, I love everything she writes, mostly because she's a fine and very descriptive writer. This holds true with THOM, but...what was Ms. Small thinking?!?! I've never read a Small novel so fraught with heartache. Why oh why was Velvet snatched away from Akbar, a man she loved who loved her in return and with whom she had a child, and returned to arrogant, boorish Alex Gordon, who had about as much finesse as a bull in a china shop. I don't get it! And it's an annoying characteristic of Ms. Small's novels to let all the misfortune fall on the good guys (such as Akbar and Rory Maguire of WILD JASMINE) and let the annoying "heroes" have the woman -- as is the case with this novel.
As if being snatched away from Akbar wasn't disheartening enough, Velvet had to endure the presence of Alex's love child. More maddening yet, it was perfectly okay and expected of her to live with this brat while her own lawful child was lost to her. Is it me, or was there something wrong with the rationale and logic of this novel?

Velvet is definitely Her Mothers Daughter
By O. Blaylock
This was a very good read. I couldn't put the book down. Velvet is a little spoiled as you would except the daughter of Skye and Adam to be. Considering her age and experience I can see how she would want her mother when she thought Alex had been killed. She had been through a lot at that point with little or no guidance from the other adults in her life. The time in India was the best part of the book. I agree with the other reviews I think she would have been happier with Akbar. The had me crying when she had to leave.

A nice edition, but nothing particularly new
By Amazon Customer
This Modern Library Classic edition of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness" is marketed as "the definitive edition", presented "in fully restored form". However, while it is a nice, good quality trade paperback, the only thing that sets this edition apart from that found in the S. T. Joshi edited "The Thing on the Doorstep" is a rather excellent introduction by China Mieville, and a non-fiction piece by Lovecraft himself, "Supernatural Horror in Literature". I am admittedly no Lovecraft scholar, but I was hard-pressed to find any difference between this and the Joshi text, and there were certainly no significant differences in the plot.

That said, this is a nice book to have, and should be particularly considered by those who are looking to introduce themselves to Lovecraft. "At the Mountains of Madness" is perhaps the quintessential Lovecraft story as it draws masterfully on themes developed in his earlier writings. Detailing the discovery of unimaginably old artifacts by an Antarctic exploration, the story revels in Lovecraft's primary concept of horror, namely, the cosmic insignificance and fragility of man. As the narrator and his assistant descend into the stygian depths of an unspeakably ancient city, the tension derives not from anything traditionally evil, but rather utterly indifferent to humanity's well being.

Moreover, the elements of dislocation, of man being knocked of his perch at the apex of evolution work, if anything, even better than they did in the 1930's. In an age when we are the precipice of understanding some of the most profound mysteries of life, "At the Mountains of Madness" places all of humanity squarely in the boondocks of cosmic significance. At the same time, "At the Mountains of Madness" plays on the human love of exploration, and in this regard can probably be better appreciated today than in Lovecraft's time, when African and Antarctic explorations were uncovering things never before seen by western man (or man at all in the case of the poles). In a world that is pretty much mapped and paved over, the reader can't help but revel in the strange newness of the discoveries found herein.

This edition also benefits from the introduction by China Mieville (the undeniable star in fantasy and weird fiction today), although it should be read after the story by new readers. His insights into Lovecraft's era, influences and radical creativity (as well as appalling racism) offer tremendous insight into "At the Mountains of Madness" specifically, and Lovecraft's work in general. In fact, from the standpoint of literary analysis, if not personal history, Mieville's introduction surpasses those of Joshi in the Penguin published collections.

Finally, there is the Lovecraft essay which concludes the volume. It's an interesting review of supernatural horror, and Lovecraft's commentary thereon. It's fairly readable for a scholarly piece, and offers some interesting insight into his work, but it will still be of limited interest to the general reader.

Ultimately, this is a nice edition, which features an excellent introduction. Publisher's notes indicating how this version differs from previously published editions are definitely missed, and in some ways detract from the reading for those who are familiar with the work as keeping an out for differences is genuinely distracting. I would be hard-pressed to call this a must buy for anyone who already owns a published edition of "At the Mountains of Madness", but those new to Lovecraft would be well served by starting with this standalone version of his best story.

A Strange Story of Terrifying Tragedy

Review of {AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS}, by {H.P. Lovecraft}

Review Title: {A Strange Story of Terrifying Tragedy}

A comprehensive review by John Adams Theibert Jr.

Review Method: This is a comprehensive review of the classic novel {AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS} by {H.P. Lovecraft}. In this review I will use a 10 element system that I developed to assign a star amount to this story out of a total of five stars. Each element has 2 components that are each worth 0.25 stars. Each element is worth a total of 0.5 stars. There are 5 primary elements and 5 secondary elements. There are 3 subtotal stars in the primary elements, obtained by adding the primary elements and rounding up. There are 2 subtotal stars in the secondary elements, obtained by adding the secondary elements and rounding down.

Stars Given: [4] stars out of 5 stars /****- / / * = star - = no star/

The Primary Elements: Idea, Plot, Characters, Setting, & Theme

The Idea – hook and world: {The idea of the story was unique and engaging yet lacked immediate pulling power. The hook was slow and methodical, yet it managed to tug just enough to keep me wondering about the rest of the book. The world was vividly rendered and creatively crafted by the use of plausible places imagined to exist in locations that are remote and desolate.} Stars for the idea: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Plot – conflict and climax: {The plot was plodding yet had a somewhat satisfying end. The conflict seed to be implied more than experienced. The climax was a somewhat singular event that was frightening and gratifying at the same time.} Stars for the plot: [0.25] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Characters – development and dimension: {There seemed to be only one character that was prominently portrayed in the story. The main character did not change much in the course of the story, because his emphasis was always the same, in which he used a warning tone throughout the story. Dimensionally, however, the main character was well rounded, in that he was realized in a complex and involved way, making him seem intelligent, wise, and brave, yet still approachable and human.} Stars for the characters: [0.25] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Setting – scenes and senses: {The setting was dazzling and chilling. The Scenes were described in abundant detail and had significant gravity to them. The scenes used in the story were fairly well rounded, exploring sight, sound, and smell for the most part, lacking somewhat in touch and taste.} Stars for the setting: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Theme – lesson and epiphany: {The theme of the story was a kind of warning to not venture into the regions described in the story. The lesson of the story was that some discoveries are too dangerous to make. The epiphany was that there are, in fact, wonders in the world to dark and terrible to fathom.} Stars for the theme: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

Subtotal stars for the Primary Elements (always rounding up), [2] stars out of 3 stars.

The Secondary Elements: Style, Substance, Grammar, Essence, & Impression.

The Style – logic and pacing: {The style of the story was a strong point. The logic was sound in how the story progressed and how the characters acted and reacted. The pacing was moderate and kept an even clip throughout.} Stars for the style: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Substance – skeleton and teeth: {The structure of the story was well founded with its parts fitted together smoothly and sensibly. The skeleton was solid and held the weight of the story well. The story’s teeth were razor sharp in that the story had a great premise that ancient advanced and extremely strange life forms could have lived on Earth millions of years ago and died out.} Stars for the substance: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Grammar – sentence structure and word usage: {The grammar of the story did not have any obvious problems. The sentence structure seemed solid and correct, and the word usage was accurate and clear.} Stars for grammar: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Essence – emotion and memory: {The essence of the story was intense. The emotions of fear and wonder were the most prominent in the story. The most memorable part of the story was the climax, in which the main characters were chased by an ancient creature.} Stars for the essence: [0.5] stars out of 0.5 stars.

The Impression – opinion and talent: {My impression of this story is good. In my opinion it has a lot of strong elements, however, some of its elements are not thoroughly utilized.} Stars for the impression: [0.25] stars out of 0.5 stars.

Subtotal stars for the Secondary Elements (always rounding down) [2] stars out of 2 stars.

Conclusion: {In conclusion, this story is great from a conceptual stand point, however, it lacks stellar execution. This story was intriguing and had a lot of nagging unanswered questions.}

Grand total stars for the story – primary elements and secondary elements: [4] stars out of 5 stars.

A real look behind the scenes
By Bernd Schneider
This is a classic. It is the first book of its kind, and probably the first book about Star Trek at all. But The Making of Star Trek is much more than any of the later books with similar names. This book doesn't idealize or simplify the making of the series. It doesn't enthusiastically praise everything and everyone involved in its production. It is an authentic and meticulous report on how TOS in particular and a TV series in general comes to life. It shows that it is a process of try and error, that aspects have to be taken into account the viewers wouldn't think of, and that the responsible persons don't always know exactly what they want ("I need some device that does something...").
The story how Stephen E. Whitfield (aka Stephen E. Poe) asked Gene Roddenberry if he could write a book about the series sounds like a fairy tale, but is true. The Great Bird was very forthcoming, and Whitfield was granted access to everything behind the scenes of the still running show, seemingly without any restriction. The book shows production schedules, budgets, private notes, script drafts, production sketches, all things that are usually kept secret or simplified for a larger public. I don't think that something like this would be still possible today. Compared to The Making of Star Trek, Whitfield's last book (he passed away in 2000) on Voyager seems rather superficial.
The Making of Star Trek may be over 30 years old, but it is of more than only historical value. It demonstrates that TV is a business that sometimes doesn't allow technical or artistic perfection. It also shows how many things we may take for granted and that are essential parts of the Star Trek Universe today have taken a rather surprising course change. Who would like Vulcans with names like "Spook, Spork, Splak, ..." as frequently suggested in the early days, or who would think that one race was originally described with the words, "Honor is a despicable trait.", namely the Klingons?

A Trekker's joy
By A Customer
I read this in the Seventies and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I've bought it again and enjoyed it all over again. Fascinating behind-the-scenes look at TOS. You have to read this book to understand what a groundbreaking series Star Trek was. You also learn how grueling a TV series is to work on. This book is fascinating, and sometimes hilarious!

A classic book for those interseted in television production
By A Customer
A classic book for those interested in television production, especially "Star Trek".
This is the first book that gave the details of the production of a particular television series, and has served as a model for similar books to follow.
The original "Star Trek" was still in production at the time this book was written, and the book has gone into many reprints.
A good primer for those who follow the current crop of "Star Trek" shows and movies, and are interested in finding out about the classic original.
This book is definitely a must-have for fans of the original series.
Co-written by the creator himself.

Rendell Deserves an Encore!
By Billy J. Hobbs
Inspector Wexford finds that this is one of his most challenging cases. In "Death Notes," he is called to investigate the death of noted musician Sir Manuel Camarque, whose body has been found floating in the lake near his country house. Naturally, everyone wants it ruled "accidental death," but Wexford senses that something, indeed, is not right. Two suspects come immediately to his mind: the aging victim's young fiance and the other his daughter! Both, indeed, have struck discordant tones and the harmony of the of the work is most out of tune! Ruth Rendell, however, doesn't keep the investigation in Kingsmarkham for this one, as California and the south of France also play geographical roles as well. No matter. Rendell is at home whereever her setting and "Death Notes" is well-written and easily captures the reader's attention. Rendell is a master of the police procedural and with her indomitable inspector, this episode in a long running series is right on key! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

Fine installment of a high-quality series
By A Customer
Although one of the most intriguing Wexford mysteries, DEATH NOTES remains, for the most part, a fairly typical Rendell novel. It has its flaws in some places, but overall it meets the high standards that Rendell, truly a storyteller of the highest order, demands.
The story begins with the seemingly natural death of the great flutist (flautist, rather) Sir Manuel Camargue. When his daughter Natalie arrives to collect her inheritance, suspicion concerning her identity arises, leading Wexford to search for the truth about who she is, trekking through England, France, and California before the questions are finally resolved.
Ultimately, the mystery surrounding Natalie's identity is much more interesting than that of Camargue's death. For the better part of the book, the whole murder plot takes a back seat to the other, more intriguing question. The revelation of Natalie's identity is absolutely ingenious, the type of clever plot twist you'd expect from Agatha Christie. Unfortunately, Rendell doesn't seem to have put her heart into the whodunit aspect of the novel as much.
But other than that, this is a well-constructed mystery, as readable as only Rendell can be. Her prose manages to be simple and conversational, yet also sophisticated and literate. Rendell demonstrates once again her wry, razor-sharp wit in her character descriptions. This may be either intended humor or mere social observation; whatever the case, it makes for a highly entertaining read.

From Publishers Weekly
This sequel to McCaffrey's Crystal Singer continues the story of Killashandra Ree, a failed musician whose perfect pitch has given her entree to the glamorous but dangerous profession of mining and cutting rare, valuable crystal. She is grateful for a new assignment that takes her off the oppressive crystal world of Ballybran, but when she arrives on Optheria to replace and tune the crystals of a famous organ, she steps into a new adventure. Abducted by the very subversives she had been trying to help, she eventually falls in love with one of her kidnappers and manages to uncover the Optherian Elders' subliminal brainwashing that had held the population captive and docile. Although the novel only comes alive during Killashandra's life in the islands, McCaffrey's many fans should enjoy this romantic adventure. Major ad/promo. December 2

From School Library Journal
YA Crystal singer Killashandra Ree is desperate to get off the crystal-mining planet of Ballybran, so she takes what at first sounds like a routine assignment replacing a shattered crystal in the main Sensory Organ on planet Optheria. While she is there she is also to find out why Optherians never leave the planet. She is kidnapped and marooned on an isolated island, but escapes, only to encounter her handsome kidnapper Lars Dahl, with whom she eventually falls in love. From Lars she discovers that the Optherian Sensory Organ is not only a musical instrument, but that it also uses subliminal suggestion to keep Optherians from wanting to leave their planet or oppose the planet's rulers. Together they plan sabotage. In this sequel to Crystal Singer (Ballantine, 1982), McCaffrey returns to the more romantic vein of her dragon novels. Killashandra is bratty, feisty and independent. Lars is big and lovable, sometimes shrewd, sometimes simple. They make an unlikely and not always convincing pair. Otherwise, the book is a satisfying adventure for those who like their science fiction spiced with humor. Betsy Shorb, PGCMLS, Md.

Pawn of Prophecy (Belgariad), by David Eddings

"Eddings' BELGARIAD is exactly the kind of fantasy I like. It has magic, adventure, humor, mystery, and a certain delightful human insight."

Long ago, the Storyteller claimed, in this first book of THE BELGARIAD, the evil god Torak drove men and Gods to war. But Belgarath the Sorcerer led men to reclaim the Orb that protected men of the West. So long as it lay at Riva, the prophecy went, men would be safe.
But Garion did not believe in such stories. Brought up on a quiet farm by his Aunt Pol, how could he know that the Apostate planned to wake dread Torak, or that he would be led on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger by those he loved--but did not know...?

Review
"Absorbing. Touches all the right Fantasy bases. Warring gods, political intrigues, supernatural creatures, and appealingly human magicians." --Publishers Weekly

"Fabulous! Eddings has a marvelous storyteller style. Exceedingly well portrayed." --Anne McCaffrey

Exactly the kind of fantasy I like. It has magic, adventure, humor, mystery, and a certain delightful human insight." --Piers Anthony

From the Publisher
There is a television commercial for potato chips that challenges "Bet you can't eat just one." A similar challenge could easily be made for the books that are part of the Belgariad series: "Bet you can't read just one." When I read Pawn of Prophecy, I couldn't stop and continued right on through the other four books of the Belgariad. I was then quite sad that I finished the series. It felt like saying good-bye to a bunch of great friends...and after all we had been through together that was hard.

Surprisingly Good
By V. Patel
First off, this is more or less a review of the whole series (Books 1-5 of The Belgariad) rather than this particular book.
The story is similar to most fantasy series: A boy grows up to discovers his true powers and discovers he's to lead the world against the forces of evil. A beautiful princess falls in love with the hero along the way.
The setting is a very detailed medieval world full of swords and sorcery and Gods that are fallible. I really appreciated the mythological (Greek and Roman type) context in which the Gods are described.
The story is engaging but predictable and thus you rarely feel fear for the heroes' lives. It's the sort of story that makes you feel good about yourself. There are only a few moments where you feel you don't know what's going to happen. Understandably, this puts off some people. But, as I said, it's a "feel good" story and I loved it.
The best part of the series is the characters. They are serious when there is need and are humorous otherwise. Their interaction is very interesting. They are always making fun of each other and cutting each other off. Each of them have a rich history (especially Belgarath and Polgara -- but of course they've lived for thousands of years and are a part of the mythological/historical texts that exist in the world). I really liked the growing love between Ce'Nedra and Garion. Neither realize they love each other until a long time.
Eddings' style is fairly simple and there is usually one plot at any given time. That is to say, there are no subplots in the series. The main plot, however, is very interesting. Overall, I really liked this series and have already ordered the Mallorean (it picks up where Belgariad stops). I can't wait!
One more thing: Order all of the five books together. You'll hate yourself if you don't. Some of the books don't have a "nice" ending -- that is, they stop at a point where the ends are all still loose and there is no conclusion. So, get them all together!

Great Read
By Makoa216
I first read this book back in the 80's as a young boy and I find this book as good as it was back then. So happy this book finally made it to the kindle version. No spoilers here so read it for yourself and enjoy it like I did. :)

Is this supposed to be some sort of ultimate tease ...
By jamie lucas
Is this supposed to be some sort of ultimate tease? Just give us the rest of the series on Kindle instead of just the first book.

Also, the Belgariad and Mallorean series kick ass. That is all.

Bible and Sword: England and Palestine from the Bronze Age to Balfour, by Barbara W. Tuchman

From Barbara W. Tuchman, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Guns of August, comes history through a wide-angle lens: a fascinating chronicle of Britain’s long relationship with Palestine and the Middle East, from the ancient world to the twentieth century.

Historically, the British were drawn to the Holy Land for two major reasons: first, to translate the Bible into English and, later, to control the road to India and access to the oil of the Middle East. With the lucidity and vividness that characterize all her work, Barbara W. Tuchman follows these twin spiritual and imperial motives—the Bible and the sword—to their seemingly inevitable endpoint, when Britain conquered Palestine at the conclusion of World War I. At that moment, in a gesture of significance and solemnity, the Balfour Declaration of 1917 established a British-sponsored mandate for a national home for the Jewish people. Throughout this characteristically vivid account, Tuchman demonstrates that the seeds of conflict were planted in the Middle East long before the official founding of the modern state of Israel.

Praise for Bible and Sword

Fascinating Reading from Tuchman as an Author in Progress
By Molon Labe
I suspect that most people who read Bible and Sword do so after an enjoyable experience with one of Tuchman's acclaimed later works, such as Pulitzer Prize winners The Guns of August or Stillwell and the American Experience in China. I fall into the extreme end of this group, having read all 9 of her subsequent books before tackling this debut offering. Major fans of Tuchman will enjoy Bible and Sword on two levels--as a stand-alone historical work and as a window on the early development of one of the finest American-born historians.
Regarding the work itself, the topic of Britain's relationship with Palestine and central role in the movement toward re-establishment of the Jewish state is fascinating. The canvas is broad, covering roughly 1,700 years from the original Christian communities in 3rd century Britain to the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which established the British policy of restoring the Jewish state to Palestine. The thesis is compelling, namely that the Balfour Declaration was the scion of twin progenitors--the Christian motivation to restore the Jews to the promised land as a prerequisite to the second coming of Christ and the imperial motivation to control the vital Mediterranean commercial route to India and the Far East. Interestingly, Tuchman makes it clear that, with several individual exceptions, these motivations had nothing to do with concern for the Jews but rather originated from the spiritual and temporal aspirations of Britain. The ebb and flow of the Britain-Palestine relationship makes for fascinating reading, covering topics such as the early Holy Land pilgrimages, the Crusades, the role of the British Navy in halting Napoleon's conquest of Palestine and the British role in propping up the Ottoman Turks.
Fans of Tuchman will immediately notice similarities to her later style while being struck by several glaring differences. Her almost lyrical, figurative style, while not as refined or prevalent as additional experience would eventually allow, is on display. For example, in describing the Turkish decision to seek help from Russia in fending off rebellion, she writes, "In his last agony, the Sultan, as a drowning man might clutch at a boa constrictor, accepted the help of his long-loathed enemy the Czar." Unfortunately, unlike her later works, Bible and Sword is plagued by an amazing number of relatively obscure literary, political and historical allusions that leave the reader with the impression of an unproven writer seeking desperately to provide evidence of her erudition. While this can be understood in the context of an aspiring historian without the typical credentials of a PhD and university professorship, it frustrates the non-academic reader, as is evidenced by an earlier Amazon review.
In the final analysis, Bible and Sword is a stimulating read, although unrefined in several respects. If you are looking to read only one or two Tuchman books, this is not the choice. But if you have an interest in the topic and/or a high level of interest in Tuchman as a writer, I highly recommend it.

Great Writer/Historian
By john tuthill
I love Barbara Tuchman for a long time. She is a REAL historian but when she writes you forget that and just enjoy her skill and learn in the process. One of the few historians who write books you don't want to put down.

Okay, it's SUPPOSED to be offensive...back off already!
By Barry Lee Dejasu
I personally find this to be an indisposable book of dirty jokes. I mean, come on! It runs the whole gamut of everything from racist and sexist jokes to religion and animals. Yes, yes, it is QUITE offensive--BUT ONLY IF YOU CAN'T TAKE A JOKE.
If you *can* take a joke, and a good one at that, then this book is a bible. I, for one, love it.
So to all those who hate this book and think it's offensive smut: don't read it or anything else by this author.
If you can handle very taboo but good jokes, read an enjoy!'
Oh, and how many people from New Jersey does it take to screw a lightbulb? READ AND FIND OUT!
