From Publishers Weekly
Brooks bestselling Shannara trilogy may have been at heart a formulaic fantasy but its vigorous storytelling and intriguing characters won many readers. In his first non-Shannara novel, he takes on another well-worn premise: the contemporary Earthling transported to a fantasy world. Ben Holiday is a lawyer who finds little satisfaction in his work. His yearning for a simpler life seems thwarted when he finds the magic kinddom of Landover, a close analogy of Earth, with precariously balanced powers threatening each other, massive pollution, and general discontent centering on a lack of faith in leaders. This first volume in the new series is mainly introductory as Ben meets the locals and dashes off a few impossible tasks to assert his right to the throne. While still inventive, Brooks fails badly in his lackluster, unbelievable protagonist, his preachy moral tags and the adolescent, daydream quality of Ben's triumphs. Shannarafans are in for a disappointment. 150,000 first printing; major ad/promo; author tour.

Great series!
By M. Tidman
I'm an avid fan of fantasy, but I'd read (or tried to read) other books by Terry Brooks, and not really been able to get in to them (probably my fault, but still. . .) Anyhow, this book was captivating from the first page to the last, and I found myself wishing that I could find a magic kingdom for sale in some odd catalogue, as Ben Holiday does in this book. As he journeys to the magic kingdom of Landover, he finds that being king of a fairy kingdom isn't all strolling through ferny forests and sunlit meadows -- for all is not well in this kingdom, and the king is the one with the heaviest load of responsibility. . . and the most pressing weight of danger. . .
I highly recommend this book to any fantasy fan, which at points is funny, mystical, romantic, action-packed; and it's interesting throughout. Enjoy, and the check out the rest of the series, because they're all great reads!

Falling apart - I've read it so many times!
By Christina M. Roberts
What can I say!? Terry Brooks is the one who pretty much spearheaded my interest in Fantasy with The Sword of Shannara, and from there I also went on to enjoy the tales of the magical kingdom of Landover. Magic Kingdom For Sale Sold is one of my all-time favorite books. I loved it as a child, and still love it as an adult. In fact, I've lost track of how many times I have read and re-read it over the years. It is a definite keeper, and one that I have recommended to all my friends, and anyone that has a love of Fantasy.
Have you ever wished that you could find a portal to another world? Have you ever dreamed of being swept away into a magical land with fantastical creatures? Well that is exactly what happened to Ben Holiday. He answered an add in a Christmas catalogue, thinking it to be a joke, and instead found himself stepping through the boundary between our world and the world of Landover ... and as it's king no less! Sounds wonderful right? Well, let's just say that things were not exactly what he expected!
Terry Brooks has spun a thoroughly enchanting tale with Magic Kingdom For Sale Sold! It has so many wonderful elements; magic, romance, fascinating creatures, humor, a hint of mystery, and lots of wonderful, quirky characters. But be warned ... once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down until you have read the last page! And the adventure doesn't end there. There are four more books in the series, all equally as good as the first; The Black Unicorn, Wizard At Large, The Tangle Box, and Witches' Brew.
I highly recommend this book. If you haven't yet read it yet, then what are you waiting for?!! Buy it now! You will not be disappointed ... I promise.

Terry Brooks takes you in to an whole new world
By A Customer
Recently I finished reading an exciting book "Magic Kingdom For Sale:Sold" by Terry Brooks. I would definitely recommend this book to others that are interested in this author. This book may appear to be a classic style fantasy with knights in shining armor fighting dragons. But, Terry Brooks has managed to add an unusual twist to it by placing the setting in a large, modern city in the first part of the novel. This is a great book for summer reading because you simply cannot put it down. It may be a little more difficult for children under the age of eleven because of its length and some of the vocabulary. The story starts out in the large city. A well-known lawyer named Ben Holiday is the main character. Ever since Ben's wife died, he had been very depressed and in need of a break from the real world. One night, Ben arrives at his house from work and he has received a Christmas catalog in the mail. As he is flipping through it, he finds an ad for a private island filled with fantasy and magic. At this time he is strongly in need of a place to escape. He considers it. When Ben's working partner hears about this consideration, he becomes very angry. The thought that the top lawyer in the firm is considering making a serious dent in his finances by quitting, the idea doesn't go by him very well. From that point on, the book is an action packed adventure. This is one of those books that you can read over and over again and never grow tired of. I enjoyed how the book kept going from one problem to the next. I think that is what makes you keep reading. There are also two more books in this series. I can't wait to read them. If you have not read this book I highly encourage you to do so.

Dated, Fun and Informative
By K.A.Goldberg
This book is dated but remains fun, educational reading. As with Bill James' other 1980's Abstracts, this book devotes an informative section to each of baseball's then-26 teams. The author analyzes each squads' lineup, leadership, on-base percentages, runs created, etc., with an expertise that led many of us to crown "brother Bill" as baseball's top stats-guru. In this edition James (a native Kansan) takes a long and proud look the the 1985 World Champion Kansas City Royals. Yes, the Royals were solid back then near the end of the George Brett/Frank White era dating from the mid-1970's. Fans of certain age will enjoy reading about many now-defunct ballparks like Comiskey Park and Tiger Stadium, plus many multi-purpose arenas (Three Rivers, Riverfront, the Astrodome, etc). And let's not forget the ballplayers, most of whom at this writing are well into middle age; Carlton Fisk, Jack Morris, Ryne Sandberg, Ozzie Smith, Oil Can Boyd, Darrell Evans, Larry and Lance Parrish, etc. This book dates to before innovations/events like the Internet, Stats Inc, steroid abuse (I think), ESPN-Baseball Tonight, Win Shares, partial revenue sharing, etc. And it's clearly written for hardcore baseball nuts - as James states, "if you don't know what On-Base Percentage is you shouldn't be reading this book." Clearly dated, but with that irreverent wit and readable style that makes darn good reading. Like many others, I sure miss these abstracts.

This was probably the best Abstract I read (loved all the others too
By J. Rosen
This was probably the best Abstract I read (loved all the others too, but this one, with its review of the 1985 triumph of the Royals) was incredible writing. Nothing like any other baseball writing ever. One thing I loved was how he debunked (quite effectively) the notion (and nonsense) that the Royals were "lucky" to win due to the Don Denkinger "call" in the 6th game of the series, and showed that the Royals had basically outplayed the Cardinals, a fact which was lost on almost anyone who watched, but knew little, about the game. The Cardinals were the lucky ones, lucky to have managed to hang on to the 6th game when they self-destructed after the bad call. Great baseball teams don't self-destruct, they bear down and get back into it, and a great baseball team the 1985 Cards were not. That was to come much later with Tony LaRussa and Mark McGwire and, oh right, steroids :-).

Like many people, I go way, way back with Heinlein. My very favorite book (and one that stands out in my mind--and with much affection--to this day) is Tunnel in the Sky. I really, really wanted to go off to explore new worlds with a covered wagon and horses, like the hero does at the very end of the book. But one of the nice things about Robert Heinlein is that he's got something for everyone. One of my best friends has a different favorite: Podkayne of Mars. Go figure.

What Price, To Play the Boards?
By Patrick Shepherd
The year is 1956. Eisenhower is in the White House, following a long line of military men to reach that post. And this slim book appears, presenting the wild idea of an actor, perhaps not even a very good actor, who manages to reach the position of head of state. Obviously an idea like this could only appear within the realm of science fiction! What a difference in perspective an additional twenty five years will make, as once more science fiction becomes fact.

The route Lorenzo Smythe takes to reach this post is, however, just a little different from that of the real-world actor. The Great Lorenzo, as he styles himself, is conceited, arrogant, out of work, and down to his last half-Imperial when he is offered the job of doubling for a well-known political figure. The job is so obviously beneath his dignity that he is ready to turn down the offer when the Martians take a hand, and Lorenzo finds himself involved in murder, kidnapping, and slicing both humans and Martians into small pieces to flush down the disposal.

Forced by these circumstances to take the job, Lorenzo is even more disturbed when he finds out the identity of the person he is supposed to double for, none other that the leader of the opposition party, Joseph Bonforte, whose politics, what little he knows of them, he despises. But his own inflated idea of his abilities allows him to steady down and start studying for the role, a role he will play for much longer than he could ever anticipate.

This book is a character study, carefully and artfully detailing how Lorenzo changes under the influence of having to pretend to be someone he is not, aided by the immediate staff of the man he impersonates. It is fascinating to watch him change from someone you probably wouldn't invite into your home, to confused and beginning to search for some moral basis to his life beyond 'the show must go on', and finally to a man doing his best not just for himself, but for all intelligent beings, truly becoming the man he is portraying.

The other characters here are pretty sketchy, mainly props to help move the plot and aid Lorenzo. This is most noticeable with Penny, Bonforte's personal secretary, who suffers from the typical Heinlein failing (at that point in his writing career) of portraying women as one-dimensional beings. However, this limited portrayal of these secondary characters does not detract from, but rather enhances by contrast the masterful portrayal of Lorenzo.

Heinlein makes good use of his own experience in running for the California State legislature, as he describes the mechanics of running a political campaign, just how decisions are reached, how dependent a politician is upon the quality of the staff he selects, so that these items ring with real-world ambience. This is also probably the first book that clearly showed his leaning towards what would now be called Libertarianism, but this exposition is fairly muted, unlike some of his later works. And it wouldn't be a Heinlein book without his side commentaries: here he covers monarchies, civil servants, patronage, media management, taxes, unions, truth and lies, prejudice and xenophobia.

Published at a time when a novel of character was practically unheard of in the science fiction world, this work, like so many others by Heinlein, expanded the boundaries of the field, another step in lifting it out of its self-imposed pulp ghetto and back to the world of literature. This is probably part of the reason this book earned Heinlein his first of five Hugo awards for best novel of the year, a record matched by no other author. The rest of the reason? It's a fun, fast, great read; a story that hasn't lost its power to engross, entertain, and expand your view of the world.

Richly deserved its Hugo award
By Billy Hollis
This is a crisp story, with action and intrigue from start to finish. Lorenzo Smythe is one of Heinlein's most engaging characters, and a real departure from the typical Heinlein hero. He also goes through a lot of changes, as a good protagonist should.
Heinlein generally doesn't have a lot of good things to say about politicians, but John Joseph Bonforte (another critical character) is his exception that proves the rule. He's honest, capable, caring - in short a saint among politicians.
Another reviewer complained of too much politics, but that's rather silly in my opinion. The book is about the world of politics in the future, so it has to talk about it. But there is very little of Heinlein's trademark libertarian philosophizing. The book moves so fast, there isn't time for it.
This is Heinlein's only short work to win a Hugo award, and I consider it quite worthy of the honor. It's not one of Heinlein's series of juvenile novels, but it can be read by teens as well as adults. Get it - it beats 99% of the science fiction ever written, and practically 100% of the stuff being put out these days.

Only the best rating for one of the best authors.
By eternalgreenknight
Heinlein was one of the best, and you would be missing out if you passed up the chance to read this, one of his many masterpieces. This story can still hold its own (despite being printed in 1957) against others in the genre- again, Heinlein was a master story-teller.

Enough people have given the summary of the book, but Heinlein wrote beyond the surface. The story is of an actor who truly discovers a greatness within himself that he at first only pretended to own. It's a story of humanity- in the politics the actor must represent- that humanity must not be doomed to repeat the same mistakes of seeing itself superior to other races, but instead try to learn to live in harmony. Like any good story it takes believeable characters and puts them in seemingly real situations in fantasy worlds, and tells us how we could only hope to act were we in such a predicament.

I'm lucky enough to own a first edition in great shape. I happened across it at a yard sale and had to pick it up. To me it was a "new" Heinlein novel as I hadn't heard of it. It's a light read, and although short, it's deep and fun. The plot loosely reminded me of a certain movie about an actor who impersonates the president... Of course this book was written LONG before that, and is much better. Read this book because it was written by Heinlein. Love it because it was well written.

pre-Indiana Jones
By Inblackestnight
Lost Legacy marks the final book of the Han Solo adventure series by Brian Daley, and while it was still a fun read it was easily the weakest of the three IMHO. The story starts more-or-less like the others: Han and Chewie are just barely getting by until the prospect of a well paying job comes their way and an adventure ensues.

One thing I thought was done really well in this book was character development, particuarly of Han whom we get some interesting background on. Having said that, LL was pretty much just like an Indiana Jones story but set in space; what little time our heroes spend in space that is. A strange thing to say considering Raiders... didn't come out until a year after this book was published. The plot takes us through one escapable encounter after another and the payoff was only moderately worthwhile.

If you've read the first two books in this series it's a good bet that finishing it off with LL is likely, especially considering all three are fairly short and added together is roughly the length of the average novel, but the Han Solo adventures are by far some of the most entertaining stories in the Star Wars universe. It would be nice if the upcoming stand-alone movie featuring Han contains a few nods to Brian Daley's work, to keep the now Legends work relevant, but despite it being a favorite among some of those involved in Lucasfilm I'm not holding my breath. 3.5+ stars

The Han Solo Adventures Conclude?
By cgrypar@tuc.com
This story is the third in the series of Han Solo Adventures written by Brian Daley (the first two being "Han Solo at Star's End" and "Han Solo's Revenge"). It was originally published in 1980, the same year that "The Empire Strikes Back" was released on the big screen. When I first began the series, I thought that perhaps the author would attempt to integrate some of the Star Wars trilogy into his story line. Aside from the characters of Han and Chewbacca and a couple of passing references to the Empire, this assumption was proven to be false. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a minor disappointment for me. Probably more so since the series was concluded about the time of "Empire's" debut. Aside from this, the story flows reasonably well as Han and Chewie go on a treasure hunt after the fabled plunders of the ancient conqueror Xim the Despot. Life never seems to be easy for our heroes as they encounter villains, fanatics, robots, and an old nemesis of Han's that are all out to seemingly prevent them from reaching their goal. In the end, the old saying "Be careful what you wish for, for you may get it" proves to be of special significance to them. For our characters are reminded that "having" is not always as gratifying as "the chase", especially when one man's "treasure" can be another man's "junk". Brian Daley leaves the story ending open with the certain possibility of a sequel. But in having chosen not to closely tie his series with the theatrical release of George Lucas' trilogy makes this difficult, if not impossible, particularly in light of the explosion of the many other Star Wars books that do continue the Lucas story line. Still, it was rather fun to temporarily suspend what we do know of "Star Wars" and to think along Brian Daley's lines of "What If..." After all, this all happened A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away..

This is defenetly a good Series and book
By A Customer
This is a very good book and series. Brian Daley did not incorperate the rest of the Trilogy because it happened before the Trilogy. I guesss from reading the other reveiws people did not pick up on this. It really is a good book it helpes explain how and why Han acts the way he did. Just to let you know this was the first Trilogy about Han with in it. The other one happens first and I would reccomend that one instead. (They are Han Solo the Early Years: The Paridise Snare; Han Solo the Early Years: The Hutt Gambit; Han Solo the Early Years: Rebel Dawn) The last one (Han Solo the Early Years: Rebel Dawn) coincides with this trilogy, and references it. So in conclusion this is a good book and if you do not see teh tie-ins with the trilogy it is because they are non-existent and this happened before the Trilogy

From the Publisher
Like many people, I go way, way back with Heinlein. My very favorite book (and one that stands out in my mind--and with much affection--to this day) is Tunnel in the Sky. I really, really wanted to go off to explore new worlds with a covered wagon and horses, like the hero does at the very end of the book. But one of the nice things about Robert Heinlein is that he's got something for everyone. One of my best friends has a different favorite: Podkayne of Mars. Go figure.

Discovering What Endures
By James D. DeWitt
Back in 1942 Heinlein wrote an amazing short story, "The Unleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag." It was an astonishing story for its time and genre. It was out of print for a number of years, but is now available in "The Fantasies of Robert Heinlein." I mention "Jonathan Hoag" because as he often did in the last decades of his life, Heinlein returned to some of the themes of earlier books. He returned to some of the ideas of "Jonathan Hoag" in this remarkable book, "Job."
Read at one level, this novel is a updated biblical Book of Job. The main character is put through the wringer because of a wager made by his Creator. Read at another level, it is the story of transformation: religious bigot and all-around prig Alex Hergensheimer is transformed into a much better person, even if that may not have been anyone's intent. But at another, deeper level, Heinlein illustrates what is really important, what really matters, what really endures. Because Alex discovers, over the course of the story, what real love can be, and how real love is the most important thing in the universe. More important than the dubious Heaven he finds when, about to lose his wager, the Creator pulls the Last Trump and Alex ascends to sainthood and Heaven, without his true love. He abandons Heaven and harrows Hell to find her. Heinlein couldn't have put it much more plainly.
My favorite scene: when, risen into Heaven as a Saint, Alex asks Heaven's help in finding his wife. And Heaven produces his wife. His first wife. From before he found real love. She's a harridan, and the transformed Alex is appalled. Even the angels are embarrassed for Alex.
The denouement hearkens back to the denouement of "Jonathan Hoag." For me, it works, but I can sympathize with those who find the ending, quite literally, too deus machina.
Like "Jonathan Hoag," you are never sure where this story is going to end, and I won't spoil it for you here. Except to say that the implied limits on human understanding are bittersweet. We can find true love, Heinlein seems to be saying, and we can live lives filled with love, but we cannot really understand the universe.
This is Heinlein at his best. No pontificating all-knowing protagonists, very little of the political polemics that started with "Stranger." Just an excellent story that invites deeper thought. Highly recommended.

Fun with satire
By Michael Battaglia
I've been kind of hard on Heinlein on the last few books of his that I read but that ends here. Farnham's Freehold might have had a better slate of ideas and Friday might have had a better main character but this book has them both beat hands down. Heinlein manages to keep doing what he was doing in those other books, which was make comments about society and aspects of it as a whole . . . but here he remembers to have a sense of humor and drops the somewhat snide tone that colored the other two books (ie the "all the enlightened people will see that I make sense and agree with me" feeling). Our hero, Alex/Alec is a devout and orthodox preacher who goes firewalking while on vacation and from there starts bouncing randomly from world to world. By the second world he's picked up a girl and is starting to detect a pattern . . . it must be the devil's fault because he's preparing for the upcoming end of the world. The story starts out as standard science fiction and Heinlein whips out worlds in a few pages that lesser writers would have spent entire series detailing . . . about two thirds through it becomes something utterly unexpected and just as good. What remains constant is the aforementioned sense of humor, Alex has some interesting views because of his faith that make him seem a bit narrow minded but all in all he's a likable character who really wants to help people (or "save" them by bringing them to a "state of grace" so they'll go to Heaven) . . . he's a typical Heinlein protagonist in that he's always resourceful and resolute, even when it doesn't seem that way. His gal, Margarete isn't as clearly drawn, she has her good moments but she spends too much time in the "my darling love" mode, but then that's something to be expected from Heinlein's portrayal of women by now . . . still the free love stuff isn't beaten to death like in other novels, he merely makes his point and moves on. The satire on religion is probably the core of the book and he raises several good points without being needlessly offensive, anyone with half a brain will find something worthwhile here to mull over. Simply put, probably one of his top three books after Stranger in a Strange Land (still got that soft spot for Moon is a Harsh Mistress, sorry) and definitely renewed my faith in the man, he had plenty of other stuff to say in the latter part of his career and could still do it with an ease that blew everyone else out of the water.

Heinlein's theological 'cosmic comedy'
By John S. Ryan
This late-period Heinlein work is one of my personal favorites of his, although I don't think it's one of his absolutely top-drawer novels. Heinlein kept experimenting right up to the very end; this is his last novel but two, and the final two were just as daringly experimental.
This one is essentially a retelling of the story of Job, with Alexander Hergensheimer as the put-upon protagonist. The outcome, too, parallels the story of Job, but I can't tell you how without giving away the ending. Let's just say that Heinlein borrows from, and builds on, some of his own nearly-forgotten early fantasy/horror works, particularly 'They' and 'The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag'.
It's also a grand homage to two of Heinlein's literary forebears -- James Branch Cabell (_Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice_) and Samuel Langhorne Clemens ('Mark Twain'; 'Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven'). You don't _have_ to know this in order to appreciate the story, but it helps.
You probably already know the plot. On a bet, Hergensheimer undertakes a firewalk and comes out the other side in a different world, one in which people keep calling him 'Alec Graham'. Level One plot: Who is Graham and how did Hergensheimer come to take his place? And what's up with this world-changing business?
Hergensheimer is also a minister in a conservative Protestant sect, and he's married. But in his new world, he's got Graham's girlfriend: a stunning Danish beauty named Margrethe, with whom he commits all sorts of 'sins' and for whose soul he is deeply concerned (she worships Odin). Level Two plot: How does Hergensheimer handle all the moral quandaries, and how does he grow and change in the process? (I'm sure you can guess that he 'grows' toward a more Heinleinian tolerance and open-mindedness; much of the religious satire here is directed at the usual suspects, who of course denounced the book as soon as it was published.)
I can't say much about the Level Three plot because it has to do with the aforementioned structure of the biblical book of Job. However, I will tell you that readers who think that structure falls apart in the end don't know Job as well as they think they do. If you're still puzzled after you read (Heinlein's) _Job_, you may want to skim over the excellent introduction to Stephen Mitchell's fine translation of the (Hebrew) book of Job. At any rate, it has to do with the nature of reality and what's really of the most central importance to human beings.
Note: there's a little bit (by a Heinleinian standard, i.e., compared to 'a lot' in his other late-period works) of preachery here, and also a little bit (by the same standard) of sex; none of it (i.e., neither the preaching nor the sex) is in conformity to the moral codes of the major branches of Protestantism. Neither will surprise or bother any of Heinlein's regular readers, but both will probably upset the targets of Heinlein's satire. If that's you, be warned.

What a joy
By Tom Cat
I concur with an earlier reviewer. This book will teach you about zen--not what it is, but how to embody it, which is what matters.

After applying the principles in this book to a 1,300-mile drive, I now see the possibilities of zen and meditation in all areas of life, not just driving. What I only understood intellectually before, I now feel in my body.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Unexpectedly surprised
By A Customer
This book vividly achieves something it probably never intended to do: offer the simplest, clearest explanation of Zen philosophy that I've read yet. While other authors overexert themselves in hopelessly convoluted terms and impenetrable analogies to try to explain the essence of Zen to their readers, Berger lays out its meaning in understandble terms by applying the principles of Zen to something that all of us can relate to--driving. And by not even trying to exlpain Zen at all, he does a masterful job--a true example of wu-wei in action!
Oh, and observing the practice in this book would make for roadways with a lot less stress and "road rage." These principles behind the wheel then can be easily applied to other apsects of life, thus creating not just more mindful drivers but a more mindful society as a whole.
A quick, entertaining and enlightening read.

Walking Across Egypt, by Clyde Edgerton

"An unpretentious, finely-crafted novel that will linger with the readers like the last strains of a favorite hymn. It is more enjoyable than a pitcher full of sweet tea and one of Mattie's home-cooked dinners."
THE ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION
She had as much business keeping a stray dog as she had walking across Egypt--which not so incidentally is the title of her favorite hymn. She's Mattie Rigsbee, an independent, strong-minded senior citizen, who at 78, might be slowing down just a bit. When young, delinquent Wesley Benfield drops in on her life, he is even less likely a companion than the stray dog. But, of course, the dog never tasted her mouth-watering pound cake....Wise witty, down-home and real, WALKING ACROSS EGYPT is a book for everyone.

From School Library Journal
YA A quietly humorous story set in a small town in North Carolina. Seventy-eight year old Mattie Riggsbee, spunky and determined, has one regret: she has no grandchildren, as her son and daughter inconveniently remain unmarried. The story gathers momentum after a slightly sluggish start, when Wesley Benfield, wayward teenager and orphan, comes into Mattie's life. Their need for each other is apparent, and their attempts to get together, despite the disapproval of Mattie's family and neighbors, are the focus of the story. Wesley is captivated by Mattie's good cooking and grandmotherly attention, and when he escapes from a house of detention, he heads straight to Mattie. There is a hilarious scene in church, where the fleeing Wesley and the pursuing deputy sheriff, both disguised as choir members, sit beside each other in full view of the congregation. Edgerton infuses all of his characters with reality, and provides a balanced perspective on age and youth. His understanding of teenagers is nowhere more evident than in the contrast between the reality of Wesley's situation and the humor of his exaggerated fantasies. Rita G. Keeler, St. John's School, Houston

From Library Journal
This second novel by the author of Raney is warm and comforting, like a visit to Grandma's. Mattie Rigsbee, at 78, is slowing down. She plans her funeral so as not to be a burden; she supports the local Baptist church and entertains herself with hymns at the parlor piano; she tries not to meddle in her children's lives, though she does wish they'd marry; she longs for grandchildren. Then comes Wesley. Reared in an orphanage until he graduated to the reformatory, Wesley touches her heart, revives a life gone to seed. Just as he needs a grandmother's love and stability, so Mattie needs his challenge, dependence, and love. How she reconciles that need before family, neighbors, and church congregation is a beautiful story of determination, made more poignant by a Southern small-town setting. BOMC alternate. Thomas L. My best friend LOVED this book and I thought it was funny at first and then got a little boring after a while. Great for ladies from very small communities.

Compact, touching prose
By ProsaicParadise
I like to read fiction that evokes feelings of the south, of the small town, without being sappy or cruel. I know the south is a cruel place in its own right, but it also has alot more charm, in my opinion, than the north; so I continue on my search for good southern fiction. Fortunately, I can say that I have found a fabulous example in Edgerton's "Walking Across Egypt". There is something very Keillor-esque about the simple language and the good story. As a feminist, I also really enjoy a book with a female protagonist, and to me the elderly main character in this book is just what I am looking for.
If you like this book, try reading Michael Malone's "Handling Sin".

Not the best
By Carol Sandoval
I have recently become a Clyde Edgerton fan so I'm reading a lot of his books. My favorite is Raney and I also very much enjoyed Killer Diller. What I really like is how real the people seem, products of their environment but rising above it with regularity. This one fell a little short. Mattie is spunky and her values are admirable as she tries to help Wesley, one of the "least of us." Some of the others in the story, however, seem a little brittle and stereotyped: Mattie's children, Robert and Elaine; the handyman, Lamar; the neighbors and the other members of the church. I finished the book wishing the best for Mattie and Wesley and the dog but with no regrets that the book was over. Not bad, but not, in my opinion, the best of this author.

Great Entry-to-Mid-level Fare
By K. Milley
This is, I believe, Eddings' first real foray into the realm of true Fantasy, and it doesn't disappoint. Eddings does well to develop characters over time and doesn't sacrifice depth for brevity. I've always enjoyed the sense of humor he brings to his works and the repartee that develops between the characters.
If you are looking for a great starter series in the fantasy genre or a more developed work, look no further. Those looking for the complexity and seriousness of high-fantasy should stick with Tolkien and Donaldson.
This was one of my favorite starting fantasy series, and continues to entertain after all these years.

Loved this book, it is the best book ever!

This was the best book I have ever read, it is SO GOOD! The plot is very interesting and the characters very life-like and believable. I have to say I could not put it down. I would give this book 10 stars if I could, but it only goes up to 5.

Edding's Best!
By Lesley West
Of all of David Edding's great fantasy works, The Belgariad stands out as the best. It has by far the most interesting characters, and yet they are "human" enough for us to be able to dientify with them. Garion's adventures and realtionships are exciting and interesting, and certainly are entertaining enough to make you want to read all of the books in the series. The plots also have lots of twists and turns, but true enough the apparently loose ends all come together at the end - a sure sign of a well crafted tale.
If you can find these books as a set, then buy it. If not purchase them all as individual books - they are certainly worth it.

There was a village once, not very long ago for those with long memories, nor very far away for those with long legs. Wootton Major it was called because it was larger than Wootton Minor, a few miles away deep in the trees; but it was not very large, though it was at that time prosperous, and a fair number of folk lived in it, good, bad, and mixed, as is usual.

It was a remarkable village in its way, being well known in the country round about for the skill of its workers in various crafts, but most of all for its cooking. It had a large Kitchen which belonged to the Village Council, and the Master Cook was an important person. The Cook’s House wand the Kitchen adjoined the Great Hall, the largest and oldest building in the place and the most beautiful. It was built of good stone and good oak and was well tended though it was no longer painted or gilded as it had been once upon a time. In the Hall the villagers held their meetings and debates, and their public feasts, and their family gatherings. So the Cook was kept busy, since for all these occasions he had to provide suitable fare. For the festivals, of which there were many in the course of a year, the fare that was thought suitable was plentiful and rich.

There was one festival to which all looked forward, for it was the only one held in winter. It went on for a week, and on its last day at sundown there was a merrymaking called The Feast of Good Children, to which not many were invited. No doubt some who deserved to be asked were overlooked, and some who did not were invited by mistake; for that is the way of things, however careful those who arrange such matters may try to be. In any case it was largely by chance of birthday that any child came in for the Twenty-four Feast, since that was only held once in twenty-four years, and only twenty-four children were invited. For that occasion the Master Cook was expected to do his best, and in addition to many other good things it was the custom for him to make the Great Cake. By the excellence (or otherwise) of this his name was chiefly remembered, for a Master Cook seldom if ever lasted long enough in office to make a second Great Cake.

There came a time, however, when the reigning Master Cook, to everyone’s surprise, since it had never happened before, suddenly announced that he needed a holiday; and he went away, no one knew where; and when he came back some months later he seemed rather changed. He had been a kind man who liked to see other people enjoying themselves, but now he was himself serious, and said very little. Now he was merrier, and often said and did laughable things; and at feasts he would himself sing gay songs, which was not expected of Master Cooks. Also he brought back with him an apprentice; and that astonished the village.

It was not astonishing for the Master Cook to have an apprentice. It was usual. The Master chose one in due time, and he taught him all that he could; and as they both grew older the apprentice took on more of the important work, so that when the Master retired or died there he was, ready to take over the office and become Master Cook in his turn. But this Master had never chosen and apprentice. He had always said “time enough yet,” or “I’m keeping my eyes open and I’ll choose one when I find one to suit me,” But now he brought with him a mere boy, and not one from the village. He was more lithe than the Wootton lads and quicker, soft-spoken and very polite, but ridiculously young for the work, barely in his teens by the look of him. Still, choosing his apprentice was the Master Cook’s affair, and no one had the right to interfere in it; so the boy remained and stayed in the Cook’s House until he was old enough to find lodgings for himself. People soon became used to seeing him about, and he made a few friends. They and the Cook called him Alf, but to the rest he was just Prentice.

The next surprise came only three years later. One spring morning the Master Cook took off his tall white hat, folded up his clean aprons, hung up his white coat, took a stout ash stick and a small bag, and departed. He said goodbye to the apprentice. No one else was about.

“Goodbye for now, Alf,” he said. “I leave you to manage things as best you can, which is always very well. I expect it will turn out all right. If we meet again, I hope to hear all about it. Tell them that I’ve gone on another holiday, but this time I shan’t be coming back again.”

There was quite a stir in the village when Prentice gave this message to people who came to the Kitchen. “What a thing to do!” they said. “And without a warning or farewell! What are we going to do without any Master Cook? He has left no one to take his place.” In all their discussions no one ever thought of making young Prentice into Cook. He had grown a bit taller but still looked like a boy, and he had only served for three years.
In the end for lack of anyone better they appointed a man of the village, who could cook well enough in a small way. When he was younger he had helped the Master at busy times, but the Master had never taken to him and would not have him as apprentice. He was now a solid sort of man with a wife and children, and careful with money. “At any rate he won’t go off without notice,” they said, “and poor cooking is better than none. It is seven years till the next Great Cake, and by that time he should be able to manage it.”

Nokes, for that was his name, was very pleased with the turn things had taken. He had always wished to be Master Cook, and had never doubted that he could manage it. For some time, when he was alone in the Kitchen, he used to put on the tall white hat and look at himself in a polished frying pan and say: “How do you do, Master. That hat suits you properly, might have been made for you. I hope things go well with you.”

All the way from Daybreak to Evening
By EA Solinas
While most of his genius went into the world of Middle-Earth and its fantastical history, JRR Tolkien produced a number of smaller stories during his life.

And though he disliked allegory, the enchanting "Smith of Wootton Major" is a bit of an oddity among his writings -- a beautifully fantastical little fable that drips over with Tolkien's love of real, deep fairy tales. And unlike many a story of elves or faeries since, Tolkien keeps that sense of mystery and magic in the world of the supernatural.

It takes place in a little town "not very long ago for those with long memories, not very far away fro those with long legs." The Master Cook of that village takes a vacation, and returns with an apprentice in tow. But something odd happens at the Feast of the Cake -- the cook stirs in a "fay-star" with little trinkets in the cake, and it's accidentally swallowed by a boy there.

The boy (later called Smith) is changed by the fay-star, which sparkles on his forehead. When he grows up, Smith ventures into Faery itself, and even meets the Faery Queen herself. The message she gives him is for her mysterious, missing husband, the King -- who turns out to be the last person anybody in Wootton Major would have expected.

"Smith" is a fairy tale in the best sense. Don't expect cackling witches or convenient loopholes in spells here; Tolkien was too skilled for that. Instead we have majestic fey and sparkling magic, woven with a tidy medieval town (consider the custom of naming people after their jobs -- Smith, a smith, capisce?). Never once does it become precious or cutesy, only more enchanted as it goes along.

It's also among Tolkien's simpler writings, especially since it is effectively a short story. In fact, it's so simple that it barely has a plot -- the vanishing King is the closest it has to conflict or a complete plot.

But Tolkien's writing sparkles with little details of the fey, with only a minimum of description. His glimpses of Faerieland are too brief, but written with the exquisite, haunting quality of his better-known works ("Once in these wanderings he was overtaken by a grey mist and strayed long at a loss, until the mist rolled away and he found that he was in a wide plain"). And he gives the impression of a world of magic far greater than any human could grasp ("... bearing the white ships that return from battles on the Dark Marches of which men know nothing").

And Smith is an odd sort of hero, infused with a kind of otherworldly light and grace that shines from him in the form of "Starbrow." Perhaps it was so stand in for the ability to see the magical and fantastical in the mundane world -- and if so, perhaps Tolkien felt that he himself had been given a fay-star that never left him.

Certainly the beauty and sweetness of "Smith of Wootton Major" suggest that he had one always -- an underrated little tale of magic and faerie, which highlights Tolkien's sublime writing.

Tolkien's portrait of the inexpressible wonder of grace.

Farmer Giles of Hamm is a hilarious tale in the spirit of the lighter passages of The Hobbit. The Little Kingdom of this story has much in common with the Shire where Bilbo Baggins wandered. It should be read for the shear pleasure of the journey.
Smith Of Wooten Major is something else entirely. Though once again we travel to an ancient England that has much in common with Middle Earth, here we find a tale for grown ups. Though most reviewers say that the tale is about what the gift of fantasy adds to the life of those who receive it, I believe that it really speaks of the rewards that come to those who choose to live life on a deeper level. What makes the book difficult to describe is that in story form Tolkien paints a picture or an illustration of the faith and the grace that were such an integral part of who he was as a person. Travelling with him you feel that you have encountered something more deep and wonderful than words can tell. The journey is not for everyone, but for those of you who take it and begin to glimps its meaning, like Smith's magic star, it will become an integral part of who you are.

A Revelation of Tolkien's Visions of Faery
By Paul E. Thomas
J.R.R. Tolkien's short work, "Smith of Wooten Major," which he wrote late in life, has already appeared in several fine editions, both by itself and in combination with other pieces by Tolkien, and most of us Tolkien enthusiasts already have it on our shelves. So why another one now, and why should we buy it? There are several compelling things about this book that make it highly attractive to those seeking a deeper understanding of Tolkien as a writer and thinker, and I'll only mention four here. First, this extended edition includes an important never-before-published essay by Tolkien on the story and on Tolkien's views of the nature of Faery, of its importance to him, of faery tales, and of the role of allegory in stories of this kind. It is a fascinating piece that provides new insight into Tolkien's thought as an artist trying to capture glimpses of Faery in his writing. The essay is in some ways an echoing companion piece for his famous earlier essay "On Fairy Stories," in which, among other things, Tolkien outlines his theory of sub-creation that he executed so successfully in "The Lord of the Rings." Second, the book contains never-before-published early notes and draft manuscripts for Smith, several pages of which are reproduced in the book itself in their original hand-written form with helpful transcriptions on the opposite page. These papers not only show Tolkien actively creating and revising his story and the history of its characters, but they also show Tolkien's working methods as a writer and so demonstrate, in a microcosm, the methods he used on such a large scale for "The Lord of the Rings." Third, Flieger's editorial contributions are very helpful. She provides an afterword that discusses the critical treatement of Smith, its genesis as a story, and outlines the new material which, as she says, allow the reader to follow "the authorial progression from explanation to inspiration to formulation to painstaking revision." Flieger's notes are also very helpful, for she points us to relevant matters in Tolkien's other works and illuminates puzzling aspects of Smith. And fourth, this is perhaps the first edition of Smith that takes Tolkien's statements that it is not a children's story seriously. He called Smith "an old man's book, already weighted with the presage of bereavement." Previous editions of Smith have ignored this statement and dressed the tale up as a children's book, presumably based on the unquestioned assumption (which Tolkien questioned very sharply in "On Fairy Stories") that because this is a faery tale, and because it is short, it must be for children. This edition honors Tolkien's view not only of Smith but of the importance of Faery and faery stories in general by beautifully reproducing the tale and the lovely Pauline Baynes illustrations, which were made for the first edition, and by setting them within a handsome hardcover text that Tolkien readers will prize very highly. This is a must have.
