Fun, Interactive Reading Experience
By Comix
Long before online POV role playing we had Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming and Find Your Fate books ! The idea is simple but brilliant. Basically, you read a story about a character that is you. As the story progresses, you are asked to make decisions, some as simple as which direction to go and others as perilous as who to engage in combat. Based on your decision, you are told to flip forward to a designated page to continue reading. As a kid I loved the idea that I controlled my characters actions and every time I read the book I could make the story different. There are a few dead end choices (i.e. your character is killed) but most of the time you have an opportunity to correct your mistakes although it takes you on a longer and usually more dangerous path. The fun part is there is no one correct path but several possibilities to succeed as well as fail.
Now the best part, although Find Your Fate books came in a variety of licenses (Indiana Jones for one) and generic adventure environments (jungles, space, undersea) this one is part of a series based in the GI Joe universe !! What boy growing up in the eighties didn't want to be a Joe ? To literally "Live the adventure !" In each volume you are a new Joe with your own unique codename. So rather than being Duke or Snake Eyes, you get to be yourself as a Joe agent and work alongside and against your favorite characters.
Face off against Destro, Major Bludd, The Baroness and even Cobra Commander himself. One book in the series even includes Serpentor !
Even in my adult years I find these books to be entertaining and not nearly as predictable as you would suspect. Used or new, it's worth it for the content. Great, nostalgic fun !

If you like this genre you'll enjoy this book.
By A Customer
Air Force Wives is an interesting look at four girls and their subsequent marriages to men in the Air Force. While not entirely accurate, it is good as a caricature of some stereotyped military wives: the wife that wears her husbands rank, the drunken floozy, the gal that marries beneath her and the "girl with something to prove." Fun reading if not taken too seriously.

Loved the Book
By Wendy
I read the book about 4 years ago, my sister gave it to me because she thought the title sounded like me. I have been married to a guy in the military since 1989. He was then enlisted and has since become an officer so I see both sides. The book was so true and funny, sexy and wild. I loved reading about other people having the same thoughts as me in the Air Force. A lot of it did it home. It put a hint of humor back into my life. I have passed the book on to whoever wants to read it, we all sign it and put a comment or 2. It has been traveling around for 4 years now. I recommend the book to anyone thinking of getting into a military relation. Not to discourage them, but to help them realize life is not to be take too seriously and you can have some fun.

good account of personal lives of military personal
By A Customer
A fictional (I believe) tale of the lives of four women and their association with the military. Outrageous, exaggerated, and quite pornographic at times, it almost perfectly captures the general emotional tone of the private life of a large and characteristic segment of active duty personnel. The author must have been in the military and is writing about experiences that sound too true to be entirely fictitious. I served in the Air Force as a doctor in a veneral disease clinic, and I can tell you from my own experience that seldom has an author got it quite as right as this one did when she wrote this book. No recruiter has the guts and honesty to give a book like this to people interested in joining up, but they should.

The Riddle of the Goddess

Wallie Smith had been dying on another world when the Goddess transferred his mind to the body of the barbarian swordsman Shonsu. Then She gave him the great, magical Sapphire Sword of Chioxin and sent him on a mission.

All he had to do was to lead the arrogant band of swordsmen to destroy the sorcerers and their Fire God.

Now Wallie discovered that he'd already tried it -- and been hopelessly defeated.

A few complications cropped up. Wallie's reputation was in tatters. His best friend and pupil was apparently planning to betray him. And if he won, he would doom all hope of progress and learning in this World of the Goddess -- doom the Goddess Herself.

It made an interesting kind of riddle. All he had to do was find the solution -- and survive, if he could!

I love this story :)
By Ouroboris
I love this story, and the four-part series of which it is a part. Look... I'm not the most well-spoken person, but I can say that you come to care about the characters and their struggles, their wins, their weaknesses, their struggles, and their sacrifices. The author did a fabulous job of breathing life and color into this world and its many characters, so reading it again and again is like slipping on an old comfortable pair of jeans and hiking your favorite trails. It is the only series of books I make sure to keep in my phone library (though if anyone ever decides to put David Eddings' "The Belgariad" & "The Mallorean" in e-format it will have fine company). Do yourself a favor and buy this series, you won't regret it!

Outstanding
By James
Long loved this series, and this author. Having read it multiple times, it effects me much the same each time. Outdated? Yes. Overly simple in its judgements? Perhaps. But still a masterwork of world building and a nuanced evolution of hero depiction.

From the Publisher
These books have never received the recognition they deserve. It's one of the most powerful and complex fantasy trilogies since Lord of the Rings, but Donaldson is not just another Tolkien wanabee. Each character-driven book introduces unexpected plots, sub-plots, and a host of magical beings so believably rendered you'd believe you might bump into them on your way to the bookstore.

A decent start, but the series gets better
By M
3 1/2 stars
Having reread Lord of the Rings in anticipation of the films last year, I recently also paid a visit to another fantasy series that I enjoyed while in middle school: Thomas Covenant. Nearly 20 years later, I appreciate the books more. The themes are very adult and while I enjoyed the books as a child because Donaldson creates a great fantasy-world that will interest and draw in readers of all ages, I am better able to understand what Donaldson was trying to accomplish now that I'm older.
In some ways, I think this particular book is more enjoyable when you're younger. Donaldson was just getting a grip on his writing style with the first book, and I find it to be noticeably less of a quality read than some of the later installments. Donaldson doesn't quite have his "flow" yet, and he does not quite develop Thomas Covenant enough to paint him as anything more than an annoying crank. You see what he is *trying* to do, but the overall effort falls kind of short.
Furthermore, there are simply too many similarities between this book and Lord of the Rings for comfort. In both series, we have a quest story of a reluctant hero who is the bearer of a powerful ring (even the talisman is the same!) that neither can use, which is coveted by a "dark lord," who lives in the East (the bad guys always live in the East; an allusion to Cold-War era politics?) and for whom physical form is an uneccesary addendum to their existence. And in both books, if the bad guys ever get the powerful rings, it will mean the end of the world. The minions of the bad guys in both Middle Earth and The Land are genetically created life forms (Orcs and Ur-Viles/Cavewights), and the Thomas Covenant series even goes so far as to re-create the Gollum character in the Cavewight Drool Rockworm. Drool even talks in broken English like Gollum, and is described as looking very much like him as well. Like Gollum, a power that was not meant for him has twisted him physically, and, like Gollum, he has selfish, child-like qualities (though he is two-dimensional; whereas the conflicted Gollum was pitiable, Drool is simply evil). There are even living forests in both books, although the specific characteristics of them are somewhat different.
Of course, there are lots of differences, too: Frodo is heroic enough that his infrequent bouts of weakness are forgivable; Covenant is annoying, self-pitying and pathetic enough that his infrequent bouts of positive, decisive action come off as teases and aberrations. Also, there are metaphysical components to Lord Foul that do not exist with Sauron, and the Ravers are much more interesting "lieutenants" than Tolkien's Ring-wraiths are (although they don't play a large role in this first volume). What ultimately makes this book worth a recommendation (besides the fact that you need to read it before getting onto the more superior later books) is the twist Donaldson puts on the series insofar as to the reality of The Land. Is it a dream? Is Covenant simply living out a Freudian wish-fulfilment, or is he actually a chosen weapon by the Creator of the Universe to keep His archenemy at bay? These issues are always playing in the mind of the reader, and they push this occasionally otherwise-derivative book into a worthy standing.

Best modern fantasy I've found
By Christopher Dudley
"Lord Foul's Bane" has many strengths to recommend it. It also has a number of shortcomings I would be remiss in not mentioning. I personally loved the series, moreso the second time around.

Donaldson's hero, Thomas Covenant, is a leper and an outcast in his own world. He has resigned himself to his life of disease (there was no cure for leprosy when this was written) and solitiude, and desires nothing more than to be left alone to live out his sentence. After an accident in town, he finds himself transported to a fantastical place known only as the Land where his disease is cured, and the most evil being in the Land challenges Covenant to stop him from destroying the world. Much of this first book in the series is spent on making Covenant as contemptible as possible, making him cowardly, a rapist, selfish, and inconsiderate, but most of all disbelieving in the world he has found himself in. Although Covenant just wants the nightmare to be over, he finds that people see him as a reincarnation of a long-dead hero, and put their faith in him. But in his contemptiblity, Covenant is pitiable. It's hard not to feel bad for him at times when people blame him for things that aren't his fault, or refuse to understand his remorse at things that are.

The weaknesses of the story lie in Donaldson's reliance on his Thesaurus and the fact that a contemptible character scares a lot of readers off. As to the language, he does at times go into a pointless string of synonyms, using words that no normal person uses in conversation. I think of this as a weakness in the novel, but not one that affects my overall view of it. More of a quirk of the author.

I've thought about the question of whether or not Covenant was actually taken to a fantasy Land or just imagined it in his diseased brain. Most readers I've spoken with believe that we, the readers, are to accept that the Land exists independently of Covenant and that he is simply taken there because he is their legendary hero. I feel, however, that there is no evidence to back this up, and there is a great deal of evidence to support the idea that the Land is all in his head, and all the people and parts of it are metaphorical representations of aspects of Covenant's mind.

Either way, the story is a great epic fantasy series, and I encourage people to put personal judgement of the character aside (he's SUPPOSED to be despicible!) and enjoy the series for its own merit.

Complex, Original, and Classic
By Arthem
It has always distressed me that the Thomas Covenant Series has landed in the "Fantasy Genre." I am of the opinion that Donaldson's masterwork would stand on its own in any arena. In "The Land" and Thomas Covenant, Donaldson has created a poetic, philosophical, and literary statement that transcends the particularity of its settings. If the Thomas Covenant Trilogy is fantasy, then so are Voltaire's Candide and Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
A great deal of attention is paid to three aspects of this trilogy. First: its comparisons with Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. Second, Thomas Covenant as anti-hero, and third, the darkness or mood of the work.
With regard to comparison with Tolkein, it is certainly understandable, since both works deal with fantastic subjects and both are thoroughly original. Tolkein repackages mythology into his own definition of elves, dwarves, goblins and the like - creating a "standard interpretation" of these mythologies that stands apart from the cultural context of the modern interpretations (witness the nobility of his Elves as opposed to the lighthearted Smurf-creatures of the American interpretation). Donaldson, on the other hand, peoples his work with uniquely defined creatures, from the Giants to the Ur-Viles, that have no contemporary counterparts in popular mythology, at least in nomenclature. Tolkein, of course, has been imitated, having used common mythology as a basis. Donaldson's world is too unique to be thus reduced, and so he gets no genre of his own.
In a similar sense, both authors constructed complex and detailed worlds whose full history extends beyond the bounds of their primary works. For Tolkein, it took the prequel (poshumous) Silmarillion to flesh out his world. For Donaldson, it takes the slightly diminishing Second Trilogy.
There are significant differences, of course. Tolkein despised metaphor. You could argue that Donaldson is all metaphor. But I digress.
The second set of commentary on Donaldson is related to Thomas Covenant as anti-hero. It is a nice "gimmick" if you choose to look at it that way, and certainly results in some repulsion. However, it is fundamentally intrinsic to the themes of the trilogy. Covenant cannot be the messianic figure that is required of him in the "fantasy" sequences, without complete invalidation of the tensions between despair and hope which drive the novels. With Covenant in any other mold, the works become nothing more than a very detailed and original fantasy work - just what they are often perceived to be.
Finally, the darkness or mood of the work is inevitable as well. It is tempting to see the "Beggar's note" as a definition of the themes of the trilogy, and this may be what Donaldson intended. I believe that the most striking theme contained in the trilogy is that aforementioned tension between despair and hope. It is not a question of ethics, right and wrong, but a very question of existence that Covenant grapples with. The leprosy issue (which would of course darken the trilogy) places Covenant in an artificial environment of isolation and unreality. Even prior to the fantasy sequences, he is living in something of a second tier of existence. The fantasy sequences exacerbate his isolation, but do not create it.
What surprises me most is the lack of commentary or interest in the poetry, philosophy, and literary merits of the work.
Despite their bleak aspect, Donaldson's poetic asides bring depth to the work. Lines such as "these are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives" are surprising in any modern novel. "Golden Boy" is another such treasure. Throughout the novels, Donaldson inserts beautiful phrases, poems, and lyrics that can be successful because he has deconstructed a critical context and justified the language by the very fantastic environment he is portraying.
In terms of the philosophy, Donaldson's treatment of paradox is particularly interesting. Some existentialists have argued that Descartes fails to prove existence because it is impossible for man to leave his own sensory context (if you can find it, "what is it like to be a bat" is a very interesting example of this). In brief, because we cannot imaging sensory input any different than what we already receive, we cannot use that sensory input to justify its reality. The fantasy sequences in the Covenant trilogy are examples of the imagined twisting of senses that provide the protagonist with this very "impossible" sensory input - colors with timbre, sounds with hue, etc. For Covenant to function in such an environment, particularly one so thoroughly in conflict with his own self-definition as a leper, is to create an unsustainable pressure that drives his catharsis.
Finally, the literary merits of the work seem obvious to me. It is rare to find an author with such dexterity in the english language. Donaldson's vocabulary is immense, and his use of it is natural. His diction becomes as inherent to the trilogy as any other aspect. His use of the anti-hero in something other than a 1960's nihlist novel is commendable, and the very structure of the trilogy is methodical and contributes substantially to the themes. The subjects are mutli-layered, and aside from the three or four tiers of reality portrayed in the trilogy, there is additional depth in each character that reveals a keen psychological grasp. Donaldson may additionally be advantaged by his real-world exposure to medicine and leprosy in particular, but his use and description of its characteristics and effects accomplishes exactly the tone that is required for the success of his ultimate conclusions.
And ultimately, Donaldson makes a point. I won't reveal the key "revelation" of the work, particularly since it is more fully explored in the Second Trilogy, but I will hint that Lord Morham lets it slip (and you've just gotta love it when Morham starts kicking butt... but I'll let you enjoy that yourself).
In summary, Donaldson addresses existence, illusion, morality, paradox, hope, despair, self-realization, crime, expiation, rape, incest, war, and the meaning of life. For me, he has much more in common with Faulkner than with Tolkien. Don't let the genre fool you. This is a profound set of novels. If you can get past the mood, and the dark subject matter, you will find plenty of sustaining action, a world with incredible depth and beauty, and ultimately a validation of the very things that the mood of the books seem to threaten.

The Many-Colored Land (The Saga of Pliocene Exile, Vol. 1), by Julian May

This is a spellbinding tale woven of equal parts epic and myth--with a liberal dash of hard science fiction.

When a one-way time tunnel to Earth's distant past, specifically six million B.C., was discovered by folks on the Galactic Milieu, every misfit for light-years around hurried to pass through it. Each sought his own brand of happiness. But none could have guessed what awaited them. Not even in a million years.

In the early twenty-second century, many humans are being born with psychic powers and are linked in a single galactic mind. Those without these psychic powers--the misfits, undesirables, criminals, and radicals--have a choice: mental reprogramming or exile. Exile, voluntary or otherwise, takes them back six million years, to a time between the extinction of dinosaurs and the rise of Homo sapiens, and to a time of exotic surprises and unknown dangers.

THE SAGA OF PLIOCENE EXILE series includes:
Volume I:THE MANY-COLORED LAND
Volume II:THE GOLDEN TORC
Volume III:THE NONBORN KING
Volume IV:THE ADVERSARY
. . . and don't miss A PLIOCENE COMPANION

''As fresh and original as any book in the field, The Many-Colored Land, the deservedly acclaimed first novel in a series of series, takes readers on an amazing journey from the distant future to the distant past, using unexpected routes all along the way. . . May's triumphs here include a tremendously original premise; fast-paced storytelling that defies predictability; and a sympathetic and well-rendered cast of characters who hold your attention throughout this whole high adventure. . . If you haven't passed through Julian May's time portal yet, well, hop in. There's always room for one more.'' --SFReviews.net

''The Many-Colored Land is the first volume of one of the most impressive science fiction series I have read. Characters with a deep, vivid individuality enact an exciting story. . . A writer who knows how to blend source and imagination to an astonishing degree. The allure of Julian May's fantasy and science fiction inventions are so powerful I find it impossible to 'read just one.' '' --Reviewers-choice.com

Best sci-fi/fantasy series ever!
By shadow
This is my favorite sci-fi/fantasy series of all time.
Julian May has a unique ability to build hyperbole that continues to point towards a climax then surprises the reader's expectations by discovering yet another peak beyond that one. She appears to have used a thesaurus heavily to throw in words which the reader will not be familiar with. That delights some people and turns other away. At some times this seems forced but mostly it flows.
She's taken several of the basal desires and fantasies that we have and put a face on them complete with many distinctive characters and an astonishing number of in depth scientific references which make you wonder just who was she that she was able to pull so many fields in to one epic series.
Truly an internally consistent self contained universe you'd want to visit....were it not so dangerous!
Five stars all around.

Beginning here-- the best sci-fi series ever
By V. K. Lin
The Saga of Pliocene Exile, beginning here in The Many-Colored Land, is, IMO, the best sci-fi series ever written. May is a velvety smooth writer whose prose reads like a vivid oil painting done by a master.
The Many Colored Land starts off a little slow-- she introduces at least eight major characters whose stories the reader will follow throughout the Exile. But while one is digesting what is ultimately a very complex beginning to a very complex tale, one can bathe luxuriously in the radiance of her vibrant, adjective-filled prose. This world starts to come alive, folks! Sight, sound, smell, touch, and soul!
The basis is in the Galactic Milieu-- our galaxy of the future, where more and more humans are being born with fantastic psychic powers, and all are mind-linked in a harmonious galactic mind-- well, all of those with psychic powers. For those humans without psychic abilities, there are those that feel stifled by the growing order of progressive civilization. Those free-spirits, radicals, criminals that just don't fit in get a choice-- mental reprogramming/rehabilitation, or exile.
Exile is via a one-way time machine that can send people back 6 million years to the Pliocene-- where ramapithicenes and the occasional wooly mammoth roam.
The Many Colored Land introduces us to the eight members of Group Green, a motley collection of the rebellious, the bored, and the depressed. As the story progresses, May breathes life into these characters like some deity-- they live, breath, and feel. May left me gasping at times-- "That is exactly what that character would say in that situation!" I felt like I knew them like my best friends.
Our heroes are quickly confronted with a Pliocene dominated not by sabretooths, but by an alien hegemony with psychic powers! They are imprisoned, enslaved, and slated for menial labor or sexual servitude or programmed breeding depending on their genetics.
The action is only beginning in this book-- the other three only propel this series to greater and greater heights. I almost never re-read books. This series I've re-read twice, loving it more each time. I spent a lot of money going back and collecting the original hardcover editions. Totally worth it!

[October 2012 update -- Maybe publishers read these reviews after all... the "tore" for "torc" error has been fixed in the sample since I wrote the original review (though "due" for "duc" remains).]

I'm a huge fan of Julian May's "Saga of Pliocene Exile" and its sequel and/or prequel series (there's time travel and circular causality, so the sequel/prequel distinction is muddled). This review applies only to the Kindle edition. I've said elsewhere that it's often the case with older books newly released on Kindle that the proofreading and format checking seem not to extend beyond the free sample; here, even the sample didn't get a careful going-over. Extra/missing line breaks, extra hyphens, and uncorrected OCR errors are jarring. In the free sample alone, you can find "Due" for "Duc", and names where "^" stands in for unrecognized accented characters like "ø". But if you've read the series before, the lapse that's going to set your teeth on edge the most is "tore" for "torc".

The Tanu torc, a psychic amplifier worn in the form of a collar, is one of the most important concepts in the first series of books; it's in the title of the second book, for Pete's sake. There are only four instances in the sample, consistently wrong; there will be hundreds in the full book. So if the publisher is going to demand (as of this date) $9.39 for the Kindle edition of a book available in good condition for pennies at your local used bookstore, the least they could do is run the product past a pair of human eyes and not just a spell-checker. I'd say wait on this one.

The Life and Loves of a She Devil, by Fay Weldon

This is not a book for everyone, but its admirers are vigorously enthusiastic. For example:
Rhoda Koenig in New York Magazine, who calls it ". . . a novel of blazingly hot revenge, one that amply illustrates the saying about heaven having no rage like love turned to hate, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned."
Or Rosalyn Drexler, who said on the front page of The New York Times Book Review, "It affords a scintillating, mindboggling, vicarious thrill for any reader who has ever fantasized dishing out retribution for one wrong or another."
Or Carol E. Rinzler, who wrote on The Washington Post Book World's front page, ". . . what makes this a powerfully funny and oddly powerful book is the energy of the language and of the intellect that conceived it, an energy that vibrates off the pages and that makes SHE-DEVIL as exceptional a book in the remembering as in the reading . . . . a small, mad masterpiece."

'Fantastic...a carefully worked-out fable, satiric and finally bitter...Just about everyone in this novel is selfish and horrid, but Weldon tells her story with infectious, wicked glee. Just 'how' Ruth manages her revenge on Bobbo, Mary Fisher and the brats is what makes this malicious parable so palatable. And it's very funny.'--Chicago Tribune

The most astutely fashioned tale of revenge since Moby Dick.
By Apoplectic_Boy@msn.com
I think too many readers & reviewers have overlooked the sheer scope of Ms. Weldon's attack in this, my favorite novel. More than just a roadmap to the vengence of one woman against the man and mistress that cause the disintegration of her life, Ruth by the end, becomes the avenging angel of all who have ever felt unwanted by a world consumed with the transient virtues of beauty, taste and wealth. She decimates, with the depraved passion of a Bosch-like demon, all of the "sensible" notions of love, mother-hood, respect for beauty and humanity that society foists upon the less attractive of its people, specifically its women. By the end of this novel her attack broadens beyond the simply banal cruelties of man and begins to rattle the very gates of heaven itself to force a confrontation with Nature and God. Ruth's gripe is with God and not man, for she sees Him as the real culprit behind the suffering she, and all women, must endure. Her ultimate victory, and the perversity of its coming is summated in the last line of this book(In my opinion, one of the best final lines ever written). One of the sharpest minds writing today, Ms. Weldon brings a lucidity and vigor to her portrait of the modern beauty-obssessed culture, that is by turns bitingly humorous and strangely touching; for all of the bile that she unleashes throughout the novel, Ruth is a character that we can fundamentally claim as one of "our" own. I think that this "our" goes way beyond the small group of feminist women who have had Weldon claimed as one of their own. For me she is the truest torch-bearer for anyone who has ever felt not beautiful, intelligent, graceful or genteel enough to earn respect in our culture. A true masterpiece, this novel is Weldon at her delicious best and is worthy of any comparison to that other great novel of revenge, "Moby Dick". Is Ruth Patchett the modern-day equivalent of Ahab? You decide.

Fay weldon is a genius!
By rony Hacohen
I find this book complete genius and one of the best feminist books I have ever read. Ruth's hideous looks are her husband's excuse for treating her like an animal, and eventually leaving her for an ultra-feminine and successful woman. Ruth can see Mary Fisher's shallow and materialistic success and character, and she knows that they are what society respects the most. Ruth doesn't, and shouldn't accept this cruelty, for she knows that there is no justification for her husband's and society's ways, and she has to get even. Ruth hasn't got anything too lose, she doesn't have any money, respect or public status, therefore she can plan her revenge without any regrets. Ruth's revenge on her unfaithful husband Bobbo is clearly about getting back at society, and it's ridiculous demands of women. Ruth gives up motherhood, love, humanity, and even her own body in order to show the world and Mary Fisher and Bobbo in particular, that beauty, respect and popularity can be achieved by anybody.

a dark, feminist fairy tale
By Aleksandra Nita-Lazar
"The Life and Loves of a She-Devil" is the second book by Fay Weldon I have read , after "Remember me", which I had reviewed - rather unfavorably. I liked it much more than "Remember me".

The novel is about Ruth, an ugly, big woman, a housewife with two children, who is left by her husband Bobbo for a tiny, pretty Mary Fisher, a successful writer of trashy novels.

Ruth is devastated, but undergoes a mental transformation and sets off for revenge... All her actions are concentrated on destroying Bobbo's new life (and Mary's, too) and getting him back. The plan requires a lot of effort and suffering, and using other people. Because of all the people involved, almost each social group is depicted and criticized with precision.

The whole story is presented in a convention of a fairy tale (an adult fairy tale!), and thanks to this trick the most absurd actions sound almost plausible.

The novel is funny, easy to read, but at the same time tackles serious matters and makes the reader think, sometimes being scary in its frankness (after all, Ruth's plan is not what all the betrayed women do, but it certainly is what many of them want to do). And what more can the reader want?

Indispensible and FUN to read
By John S Harris
It's like a trip down memory lane!
The only other edition of this book I owned was the version published in 1987. So this edition is a quantum leap forward.

I challenge you to find a more thorough guide to prime time TV. This book has everything - down to the minutest detail. Even if you just scan through this book you'll see in-depth references to shows you've long forgotten about. It really is like flipping through an old family album that has been lost to time or stashed away for years. The memories just come flooding back to you.
Special enhanced bonus: the appendixes at the back that break down the shows by longest-running, spin-offs, etc.
No kidding: the last time I sat down to read through this book, I let SO MUCH time go by that by the time I put it down I had to shave again.
Absolutely worth picking up, but nearly impossible to put down!!
Don't believe me? Read some of the other reviews listed here for this simply fantastic reference book. There's a reason everyone gives this book 5 stars!

Very good book on TV shows
By Carlos Fernandez
As a young (29) person who is still building a collection of classic TV shows, I found this book a very valuable tool. I don't like it that it says 'to present' in the title, because it seems like a ... trick to have people buy it once it's outdated.
Anyway, I'm going to comment first on what the book has, and the on the flaws.
The book comes with a list of more than 5,500 TV series. Each entry includes original and last air dates, cast and a synopsis, and often interesting notes. It also comes with the primetime schedules for all networks since 1947, a list of Emmy winner, and several rankings (top-rated programs, longest-running series, top 100 series, etc. The index is good, too.
The flaws: Information is not always accurate. I'd like to say this is occasional, but I have spotted several mistakes, and well, I haven't watched all 5500 series, as you can imagine. If I found like 5-6 mistakes in 30 series I really checked (even watched the tapes to make sure), I wonder what the real ratio is.
Also, there's missing shows (mostly from HBO and/or the last year, which probably means they didn't put a lot of work in updating the book).
Still, I think this is a great book to buy for TV fans. However, the information it contains can be easily found on the web (the list of Emmy winners, or information about shows, etc are freely available), so for the casual person who just wants to check a specific fact, it's probably not worth the money.

From Publishers Weekly
King Belgarion and Queen Ce'Nedra are still searching for their kidnapped son Geran in this second volume of The Mallorean, Eddings's sequel to his bestselling fantasy series The Belgariad. After pursuing the Bear Cult in the last book, they now have information that the culprit is actually the evil Zandramas. Despite the seeming urgency of their quest, the journey becomes almost leisurely as the company, including the ancient sorcerer Belgarath, his daughter Polgara and the spy called Silk, stop repeatedly along the way. They visit the cave-dwelling mystics, the Ulgos, the imperial Tolnedrans, the forest Dryads, the Serpent Queen and the city of Rak Urga, where they make an unlikely ally of timid, wily Urgit, King of the Murgos. If this is seldom really gripping, the flavorful interplay among Eddings's stubborn, resourceful characters keeps the narrative continually entertaining.

From Library Journal
As the words of the Prophecy lead the Rivan King Garion and his companions across the lands of the Snake-Queen and the once hostile Murgos, the malignant Zandramaskidnapper of Garion's sonpursues another Prophecy which, if fulfilled, will lead to the triumph of Darkness. Eddings continues to provide solid fantasy entertainment featuring engaging characters and warm, wry humor in this sequel to Guardians of the West. Recommended for fantasy collections. JC

a very whimsical fantasy series
By Joe Sherry
Book 2 of the Mallorean
King of the Murgos continues Belgarion's quest to find his kidnapped son. He is following someone named Zandramas but he is several months behind. The search begins with Belgarion and a group of people named by Prophecy. Belgarion's grandfather, the sorcerer Belgarath, mentions that while it may appear to be a roundabout way to go about the search, it is actually quicker to follow the instructions of prophecy. In this way, Belgarion gains ground on Zandramas.
In King of the Murgos, the party (Belgarion, Belgarath, Polgara, Silk, Durnik, Toth, and CeNedra) journey in the quest to find Belgarion and CeNedra's son. Oddly enough, they stop many times along the way and spend a good deal of time at each place. In the odd way that the world of David Eddings works, this actually helps them gain time on Zandramas. They learn some more of the reasons of why Zandramas kidnapped Geran and where she is going. As they journey we are introduced to more characters (some of whom join Belgarion's quest).
I have seen comments to the effect that the Mallorean is essentially a rip off of the first series, the Belgariad. In a sense, this is true. We have most of the same characters and the quest feels similar. Eddings actually addresses this in the book and it becomes inherent in the world of the Belgariad/Mallorean. It is part of how the prophecy works. On the other hand, the story is more mature than the first and some of the characters have matured (Belgarion, for one). We have to remember that this is not high fantasy on the level of Tolkien or George Martin. David Eddings writes a more light hearted and whimsical fantasy. He has an entirely different touch and Eddings is just a lot of fun to read. King of the Murgos is another entertaining entry in a very fun and familiar world.

By far my favorite in the series!
By A Customer
O.k., so like an unobservant fool I picked up this book without reading the fine print that said "Book Two..." but was pleasantly surprised that I had 6 previous books to read and 3 more to follow! From the first scene in the tunnels I was hooked. A reviewer of another of DE's books called his dialogue "annoyingly cute" or something to that effect; I personally found it to be just the right amount of "cute" (although "cute" would not be my personal choice in words). The discussion of the meaning of the word "lost" in the first chapter was wonderful. The sarcastic humor of Silk is what makes me re-read the books over and over. He is by far my favorite character in any fantasy book I've read! Just thinking about it makes me want to read all 10 again! (I havent gotten around to the final 3-ie Belgarath... Pol...and that last one- but I'll tell you, if any character deserves his own book(s) it's Silk!!!!!!!)
