Touching Garfield!
By A Customer
This movie/book was very very sad. I read the book in school. When I rented the movie I got teary-eyed. Garfield thinks back on his relationship with Odie and all the mean things he did to him. Read the book it heartwarming, touching, and sad. Be sure to have a tissue handy. The movie is more sad then the book. But they are both good.

From the Publisher
David Eddings [The Belgariad series] -- This is like Bonanza, or like I Love Lucy. There will be other fantasy series, but there can never be another that's so seminal, that so captures the essence of fantasy. Big Dave and Little Leigh grow their heroes from the ground up, and they grow the best.

Whipped Cream, and a few Nuts
By J. Mccoy
Eddings continues to deliver a story that is so light and delectable, one cannot help but refer to it as whipped cream for the mind.

As the series builds, a few "nuts" are thrown into the mix, and trust me, this is a good thing.

Garion's little band grows, gathering a more delightful cast of characters. Eddings really grabs the reader and gives him every reason to love and sympathise with the characters.

Additionally, Eddings takes the reader on a continued journed through his world. Unlike many author's who draw a map and then tell their story in one locale, Eddings established a map in the first pages of "Pawn of Prohesy" and then he takes us by the hand and walks us through a few countries at a time. Not only do you get to see the characters' growth along the way, you get to see them in differing locales and their reaction to each.

Garion continues to grow into his powers, though they are nowhere near controlable as of yet, and we begin to understand a bit more about his destiny.

My favorite moment in this book comes when "Aunt Pol" reveals to Garion just how much she has gone through to help him and his family. Instantly evaporated are the tedious complaints that can come from s many reluctant heroes, and Garion begins to grow into the young man he will be.

I continue to adore this series. Try it with the expectation of some lighter fantasy reading and you won't be disappointed.

Fictionalized, but still good
By amd
I read this after I saw the movie, and I couldn't put it down. I agree that the author can draw readers in, keeping them hooked.
However, this is based on the movie, which is fictionalized. John's real name is Joseph, and he did know his family. His deformities didn't start until he was about five, and they just got worse as he grew. In the book and movie, he quotes the Bible. His mother was a Sunday school teacher, but she died when he was ten or eleven. His father remarried, he was unwanted by his stepmother.
He did spend time in the workhouse, but he got himself out. Signing on to a freakshow was the only way he could earn a living, his appearance was that horrible. Joseph was treated kindly by his employer, until he was bought by someone else. They toured Belgium, like in the book/movie. He made his way back to England alone. There, he finally met Dr. Treves, who took him in.
This book and movie rearranged the order of things. It works for suspense reasons, making you wonder whether John would survive. The book also mentions a vicar teaching him to read, and elaborates on his time spent in the workhouse, making it longer than it really was. The evening at the theatre was done incognito, without the speech from Mrs. Kendal at the end of the performance.
The ending is accurate, he did die lying down, very sad. At least, Dr. Treves was kind to him, and saw the man behind the disability.
For the real story, I'd recommend The True History of the Elephant Man by Peter Ford.

Not meaning to detract from movie, but as for the book...
By GLT
It's been about 20 years since I read the book, but as I recall it attempts to flesh out a movie whose creators had already gone to some lengths themselves to embellish upon what's known about the last years of the life of Mr. Merrick.
Since only a few primary sources, and brief ones at that, are available on the subject, a good deal of embellishment would have been needed to create the movie. A certain degree of sensationalization (is that a word?) is probably unavoidable as well, in order to sell the movie to a larger audience. This is apparent in the way that Merrick's appearance is only gradually revealed, and then only after the suspense has been suitably built up by the depiction of various reactions of horror and/or sadness. Additional scenes were invented as well, to help transport the viewer into the world of late 19th century London and the hospital setting where most of the movie transpires.
I don't think that kind of fictionalization was wrong on the part of Lynch and the others who made the film. In fact, I'm both a big fan of the movie and an avid reader of nonfictional material on Merrick.
But the book, as I recall so many years later, carries the embellishments a bit too far. The male hospital worker who in the movie parades his compatriots through Merrick's quarters, is here shown sexually abusing some female hospital patients as well. It also failed to strike me as more than an average-quality novelization of a wonderfully made film which deserved better.
My critique is necessarily weakened by the lack of other details in my memory of the book. And I suppose that, to the extent the book interests more people in learning about the real Merrick, or even just in watching the movie, its writer achieved something positive.
As a real memorial to Merrick I find the book sadly lacking. Better to turn to Dr. Treves's "The Elephant Man" or Ashley Montagu's similarly titled book. (I refrain from comment on Howell and Ford's "True History of the Elephant Man," though I own a copy, as it fails to document its sources.)

From Library Journal
Medicine Eagle, raised on a Crow reservation in Montana, here elucidates a procedure of spiritual growth for women complete with exercises and instructions. The core of the process follows Native American religious philosophy, but includes layers of astrology, numerology, pop psychology, and mysticism. The author relates her own spiritual journey in detailed scenes reminiscent of Carlos Castaneda. The purpose of spiritual growth is to prepare oneself for the coming new time in which all peoples and creatures will become connected in an unprecedented manner. Women, the author believes, will play a crucial role in this planetary transition. Essential for Native American collections, while feminists and New Agers will also find something of interest here.

From the Publisher
I had this book pegged wrong. Something about the title, I think, though I can't say exactly what. I was expecting more history and less spiritual autobiography, but what I got--what this book is--is a deeply affecting invitation to a physical and spiritual path. Brooke Medicine Eagle knows whereof she speaks. Anyone interested in learning more about Native American spirituality has found the right book. With the current popularity of all forms of European-based mythology and spirituality, we in the so-called New World tend to forget the spiritual legacy of this land and its native peoples. Brooke Medicine Eagle gently takes you down the path of her own life, revealing how your path can and may intersect the life she has chosen. The way of life that she lays before the reader is life-affirming and life-enriching for the individual and the planet.

A manual for becoming a true human being
By A Customer
Brooke Medicine Eagle has written more than an autobiography with Buffalo Woman Comes Singing. She has shared her heart and soul in the story of her coming of age as the powerful and gifted Medicine Person who offers beautiful and power-filled ceremonies and exercises for the reader's personal growth. While telling her story, Brooke manages to reveal both painful personal processes and glorious revelations that empowered her. Her humanity glows brightly and helps the reader to feel a great affinity with her growing mission to help others love our Earth Mother. The appendices in the rear of the book offer many other books and resources for those who wish to follow the Rainbow Path of diversity and of love for this planet. This is a marvelous autobiography told in an inspiring manner with many practical suggestions for ways to foster our own metamorphosis

Buffalo Woman Comes Singing
By A Customer
To be quite honest about this book, I did not finish reading it, even though it was well written. It's a case of mistaken identity: about halfway through it was evident that Brooke Medicine Eagle is preaching New Age religion and is not holding to traditional practices and beliefs, as I hoped when I bought this book. At the point where she was explaining how she believes that Christianity and Traditional beliefs are consitent with each other, I quit reading and merely skimmed, finding that this book is a conglomeration of different beliefs, including 12-step programs. Perhaps this is what a reader may be looking for; this reader was not. Those looking for Traditional reading might wish to read Sacred Fireplace, by Pete S. Catches, Sr., or Crow Dog, by Leonard Crow Dog and Richard Erdoes, both of which are filled with traditional spiritual insight and practice.

A Book for All Our Relations
By Kathy
Brooke Medicine Eagle's autobiography tells more than the story of one extraordinary woman. It invites the reader to experience his or her own spiritual self by being firmly grounded in the wisdom of the Earth. No faith is required, there is no dogma in this book and, thankfully, no burdensome beliefs to accept. Instead, there is a call to one's integrity, a sense of humor, and reverence for everything from sexuality to the Creator of all. Rarely does a book combine profound inspiration with simple and beautiful ritual practices that demonstrate our untapped human potential. If our Mother Earth could recommend a book for all her children, this would be it.

"A writer good enough to restore your faith in fiction."

It is only a week in the life of a 35-year old bachelor school teacher in a small Minnesota town. But it is an extraodinary week, filled with the poetry of living, the sweetness of expectation, and the glory of surprise that can change a life forever....

From the Publisher
Finding out that Ballantine published this book was a very nice surprise for me. I first read Jon Hassler's Staggerford when I was a sophomore or a junior in high school. I'm not totally sure which. Talking about this book with a friend was one of the first conversations I ever had when I thought, "Wow, she gets it too!" I've read just about all of his novels since. No one captures the small town subtleties - the quirks and the quiet dignity - with as much warmth as Jon Hassler. My friend eventually moved to Minneapolis and has seen the author about a dozen times. I don't think she moved to Minnesota just to stalk Mr. Hassler, but it is a nice plus for her. Working in the office, I've read his books before they've been published and seen the comments from his editor and his letters as the manuscript become a final novel. I've never actually spoken to him though which, in a way, I like. You see, I love all of his books but when I think of Jon Hassler, I picture the warm, quiet, intelligent gentleman and slightly awkward and anxious observer- that is Miles Pruitt, the hero of Staggerford. I'm sure it's not accurate - what author is just like his protagonist? - but I like thinking of him just like that.

The Book that Changed the Way I Thought about Books.
By Melani Weber
I first read Staggerford because I had friends who were students of Mr. Hassler at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. They said such wonderful things about him, that I decided to take a look at his first novel. By the time I finished it Staggerford had affected me so profoundly that I couldn't read another book for weeks. Only once before had I been so exhilrated (and disturbed at the same time) by a story: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Why is Staggerford so affecting? Because the characters are not small-town hicks living in an isolated, backwards community. They have real ambitions, real quirks, and real drama in their lives. What is so remarkable about them is that while they are not ordinary people, they are also just like us, which is a refreshing paradox to find in fiction.
Mr. Hassler's genuine affection for his characters is not sappy or syrupy, but is amusingly tempered by a small-town practicality that allows him to "tell it like it is."
If you are looking for other Hassler books to dig into, I'd like to recommend something other than A Grand Journey and Dear James. Although I greatly enjoyed those two books, I'd like to suggest Rookery Blues and The Dean's List as examples of Mr. Hassler's incredible ability to build an amusing, unusual, and utterly real small town community.

Disappointed
By Kathy R
I liked the simple country feel to the story-didn't like the surprise ending!
If there was a message to the tale, I didn't pick up on it.
I bought the Kindle version-I found many spelling errors as well as word replacements that were probably automatically done by Spell check that didn't make any sense in the sentence.

A Life Without Meaning
By Susan Taylor
I had trouble following the story because there were so many sub-plots to add confusion. Going from one situation to another was difficult. Also, I was stunned when the main character was killed. I guess that I expected a happy ending.

Twilight at the Well of Souls (Saga of the Well World), by Jack L. Chalker

The rift in the fabric of space was fast approaching the Well World, and time was running out. Troops all over the planet were gathering for the final battle.

Nathan Brazil and Mavra Chang somehow had to reach the Well of Souls in time to save the universe and before any of the hostile natives managed to kill them.

At best, a difficult mission. At worst, impossible -- especially since there was a price on Brazil's head and many would-be claimants! For Brazil, the difficult was but the work of a moment -- the impossible would take a little longer!

A good end to an excellent series.
By jyrhino
I love the well world series, have since I picked up 'Midnight at the Well of Souls'. This was a good conclusion with a few things left hanging and a few real metaphysical questions still unanswered. In the end, it is about the characters and their lives. Thanks for the time Jack!

Book 5: Capstone of a classic series.
By Amazon Customer
The myriad stories begun throughout the series are brought together here, as plot-threads you didn't know existed are revealed and then woven together (and none of them are dissatisfying cheap tricks, either). Many questions are answered, but not all of them.

The scope of the finish here is the biggest I can remember, and the poignacy of the end is distinct from the triumph or anti-climax at the end of many other major science fiction tales.

I've read this entire series four or five times completely, and it was worth it every time.

Vol. 1: Midnight at the Well of Souls
Vol. 2: Exiles at the Well of Souls (Part 1: War of the Well World)
Vol. 3: Quest for the Well of Souls (Part 2: War of the Well World)
Vol. 4: The Return of Nathan Brazil
Vol. 5: Twilight at the Well of Souls

A must read.
By A Customer
This is the first in the series that I have read, but unlike most series novels the history and characters are well explained thus able to comprehend the situations.Brazil the perfect hero is not the classic hero as he uses deceit and other human prows to achive his goals. It is noted that a lot of classical work shows the hero as a moral,'justice for all',... character while true human nature of corruption and other and philosophy that the ends justify the means are ignored.Such greats as Alexander The Great have employed ruthless methods and it is seen that Brazil is the same.As conclusion compared to classic good versus evil and pure fantasy fiction this novel is a work of art.

A Life Characterized by Accomplishments and Extremes.
By mirasreviews
When Roman Polanski wrote this autobiography, he was still under a pall of pessimism following the murder of his wife, Sharon Tate, 15 years earlier. I imagine that a lot has changed in his life since 1984, considering his remarriage and new family. But "Roman by Polanski" is a very readable, articulate, and seemingly candid account of Polanski's childhood in German-occupied Poland, his youth under communism, his professional struggles and emergence as a coveted talent in the 1960s, when he took up a bohemian lifestyle in Hollywood and London. That was shattered, of course, by the murder of 5 people, including his wife, as his L.A. home by the Manson "Family" in August 1969, an event which is often cited as the end of the freewheeling '60s. Polanski later fled the United States over sentencing irregularities in a statutory rape case, and he offers his view of that situation as well.

Polanski recounts the making of his films in varying degrees of detail, from his student productions in Poland through "Tess". At the time he wrote this book, he was burned out on filmmaking and had returned to the stage to play the part of Mozart in Peter Schaffer's play "Amadeus". Polanski lays out the events of his personal and professional life plainly. He has had an interesting life, accentuated by the stark contrasts between communism and capitalism, poverty and wealth, freedom and persecution. Readers may be more curious about Polanski's character, though. He relished his lifestyle, was accused of rape, and so became the libertine that everyone loves to bash. His driving ambition in everything he attempts and his social values, from his reckless generosity to his many lovers, come across as having shaped his life. And they gave him many interesting stories to tell.

A Jewish Boy in German-Occupied Poland and a Jewish Teenager in Early-Communist-Ruled Poland
By Jan Peczkis
Instead of repeating other reviewers, and dwelling on Polanski's (Liebling's) accomplishments and celebrity status, I limit my review to Polanski's experiences in Poland.

Polanski's childhood was spend near Krakow (Cracow). He avoided the Nazis by staying at the village of Wysoka with the Buchala family (pp. 39-46), where he did farm chores. Apart from being temporarily moved to another village to avoid a German census, and being shot at by a German for an unknown reason (p. 44), his stay was uneventful. He did not feel the need to hide in order to avoid getting denounced as a Jew. To the contrary: He freely played with the gentile boys in the village. (p. 43). When he revisited Poland in the early 1980's, he went to see the Buchalas, and learned from others that they were no longer alive.

The entering Red Army stole from the Poles. (p. 48). The privations of post-war Poles were obvious. Poles engaged in scavenging (p. 49) and, lacking enough clothes, had to wear discarded German uniforms for years. (p. 49). [Although Polanski doesn't develop this further, the circumstances described help illuminate Poles' looting of the places of the murders of Jews for valuables.] He also writes: "Because of the housing shortage, Mrs. Winowski was compelled to take lodgers." [Although Polanski doesn't mention postwar killings, the poverty and housing shortage help the reader understand why some Poles weren't exactly thrilled when Jewish survivors showed up and reclaimed their properties, and why, on rare occasions (600 out of 300,000 surviving Jews), Poles killed them. But note that, despite the extreme circumstances, the vast majority of Poles relinquished the properties without incident.]

While Polanski was a teenager and young adult, the Soviet Communist puppet state was tightening its grip upon Poland's citizens. Polanski reported that people found an outlet for their individualism in such things as athletics (p. 83) and jazz (p. 118). When he revisited Krakow in 1976, he observed firsthand how the priceless architecture of the city had been damaged by the air pollution emanating from the factories in nearby Nowa Huta. (p. 380).

Paradoxical Roman - by Polanski
By Annette L. Munson
The myriad and often contradictory superlatives that define Roman Polanski are evident in his 1984 autobiography. A man of immense dichotomy: by turns exquisitely sensitive and dazzlingly brilliant yet capable of staggering insensitivity and cruelty; a singularly gifted filmmaker who has sometimes betrayed that talent completely; a man blessed with the reciprocal love and devotion of three of the world's most beautiful women (most notably Sharon Tate) and yet easily capable of sexist and loutish behavior, etc. The parade of paradoxes attendant to Polanski's life make for fascinating reading, evoke extremes of admiration and disdain on the part of the reader, and ultimately remind us that the author, like life itself, is not easily defined nor pigeonholed by a pool of platitudes.
As this tome lacks the direct input of anyone other than Polanski himself, much of the director's foibles and missteps are congealed in the inevitable patina of celebrity and privilege. But that's not the whole story - by far. Polanski's appalling childhood and the Manson murders of 1969 (Polanski's pregnant wife and unborn child were murdered by disciples of the would-be messiah) undoubtedly contributed to the self-destruction that is too frequently an underlying theme in his life.
The passages in which the author pays noble tribute to Tate provide a touching - and fitting - legacy to the lovely actress whose abundant goodness - her superior heart and her abiding selflessness - are manifest in Polanski's memories. It is, ultimately, this aspect of the book that remain in the reader's memory - long after the last page has been turned. In Polanski's relationship with his late wife - we are allowed to observe the director's vulnerability, tenderness and love - qualities that are all too frequently sublimated in his own overweening arrogance, pride and machismo.
"Roman by Polanski" is a satisfying and compelling read for those of us who, though incensed by some of the director's sophomoric actions, still find a commonality with the chaotic and passionate aspects of his personality. For this reason, the loss of his filmmaking genius in America is very unfortunate indeed.

In this book you learn about Sam Houston, the development of the Cherokee Syllubus, Tecumseh, and the strengh of a Cherokee Woman.

This was an excellent book, I read years ago. One that changed my life. Who Tiana Rogers was and the way she is portrayed in the book, gave me a role model to follow, in a time when I really needed one. This is a book that touched my soul, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's attention it called. It's a beatiful story and one that you'll never forget.

A Book that tugs at your heart
By Jeri' Williams
This book gives you the insight of what it was like to live as a Cherokee in that part of the country. They were loving, beautiful people who lived their life according to what their ancestors had taught. It also gives us the ability to understand what they were forced to leave behind so the White settlements could prosper. And the unfairness that they endured. Tiana is an incrediable character who touches our heart and leaves us remembering her or what she represents, years after the book has been read.

Rocky IV: The Director's Cut
By The Seeker
If you're reading this right now, you probably have already seen the movie Rocky IV. So I won't waste time telling you the plot of this book since it's exactly the same as the film it's based on.

Having typed that, this book is a must have for any Rocky fan. It is really cool getting to see something new in the Rocky universe. There are a lot of extended scenes and dialogues that fills gaps.

To give an example, in the book, you'll read about Apollo and Rocky talking together after sparing in the beginning of the book, and Apollo giving Rocky the hat we later see him wear in the movie. There's also some good romantic scenes between Rocky and Adrian, as well as some hilarious dialogue between Paulie and the robot. We also are treated to reading about Rocky's training with Apollo Creed in Las Vegas, and all about how the two go jogging on the Vegas Strip. After seeing Apollo train Rocky in Rocky III, it's cool getting to read about how the roles were reversed this time.

Also - in this book, when it's Rocky's turn to face Drago in the ring, and he starts training, Rocky originally tries to train in his old gym in South Philadelphia, but due to being bothered by so many fans and the media, he decides Russia is the best place for him to train so he can be undisturbed. There's all sorts of things like that in the book that I really enjoyed reading. You learn so much about the characters and the events.

The way the author describes places and people is wonderful. If you have a good imagination, you'll be able to see the scenes very clearly, and be right there with Rocky in Las Vegas or Russia.

What I like about the book besides all the extra stuff is that we are able to go inside the character's heads and see what they are thinking. As I was reading about Apollo Creed in this book, and all his thoughts and feelings on why needed to come back to boxing, it reminded me a little of how Rocky was in the sixth Rocky film. It made me really sympathize with Apollo, and I cheered for him all the more in my head when he competed against Ivan Drago.

Speaking of Ivan Drago, this book humanizes him, and we learn that he is not only a husband, but a father as well who had to work very hard to get where he is. He's still presented in the book the same way he was in the film, but you're able to travel into his brain and have a much better understanding of him and can sympathize with him. You'll learn his history as well.

This book is like a director's cut of Rocky IV. It takes you right into the world of Rocky and many other characters, and doesn't look back. You see everything told from many different perspectives. It is extremely detailed, and is exactly what a book should be. This is very easy to read, and is a lot of fun.

Reading this book can help one understand the character's choices and words much better. Truly, there are no good or bad guys in this story - Just people doing what they think is right.

Saner Perspective from the Original Script Writer
By susumu-5
Novelization of the fourth Rocky film is an enjoyable read indeed. It gives saner perspective from the script writer Stallone while the film was misunderstood as some sort of anti-Russian propaganda. It is faithful to movie script and not so much original development there. Training scene in remote place in Russia is good as well, though the training method is no so much convincing as that of Karate Kid series. It seems as the series go on it is getting harder and harder for Rocky to concentrate apart from media attention. It is more like Rambo in first blood part 2.

Verdict: Saner, and more realistic description except training scenes.
Rating: 70 out of 100
Recommended for: Die-hard Stallone fans.

A lot of the rocky Apollo bonding brought out. I liked the fact that drago was given flesh, not merely the cartoon villain of the film

"A tour de force."
LOS ANGELES TIMES
Ivy Rowe may not have much education, but her thoughts are classic, and her experiences are fascinating. Born near the turn of the century in the Virginia Mountains, Ivy's story is told completely through letters she is forever writing, and that you will forever want to read....
"Few readers will be dry-eyed as they watch this extraordinary woman disappear around that last bend in the road."

From Publishers Weekly
Readers will be thoroughly captivated by Ivy Rowe, the narrator of this epistolary novel, and will come to the end of her story with a pang of regret. Smith ( Oral History , Family Linen ) has produced her best work here, creating a fully rounded heroine and other vivid characters who inhabit Virginia's Appalachia region. The letters begin around the turn of the century when Ivy is a child living with eight siblings on the family farm on Blue Star Mountain. Written with quaint misspellings and in the vernacular of Southern speech, the missives reflect the harsh poverty of farm life, as well as the simple beauties of the land: "This is the taste of spring," her father tells Ivy, and she never forgets it, even when the family must move to the boom town of Majestic after her father's death. Ivy's talent as a budding writer is recognized early on, but just as she is about to realize her dream of going North to school, she is betrayed by her passionate nature. Though pregnant and "ruint," she marries a childhood friend who takes her back to the family homestead, where she bears several children and endures the endless toil of a farmer's wife. Just when life seems drearily predictable, she succumbs in middle age to an irresistible passion that brings tragic consequences. Ivy is a woman of bewitching appeal and endearing faults: bright, with a poet's eye and soul; spunky, impetuous, sensual and proud. Following her heroine over seven decades, Smith conveys the changing conditions of life in Appalachia, during which time, as Ivy laments, "everybody has took everything out of herefirst the trees, then the coal, then the children." In the old tradition of oral storytelling, Smith has fashioned a dramatic, magical, poignantly true-to-life tale. Literary Guild selection.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Ivy Rowe, Virginia mountain girl, then mother, wife, and finally, "Mamaw," writes letters "to hold on to what is passing." Her story tumbles out in words that are colloquial and sometimes misspelled as she pens letters to her family and friends throughout her long life. Although her attendance at school is sparse, the teachers encourage her, believing that she is exceptionally gifted in language. As a teenager, she thinks that she does not want to have children "as they will brake your hart." But have them she does, a process which makes her "bones screech," but she comes to see that "children swell up your heart." She learns the difference between lust, "a fiery hand in the vitals" (as in Jane Eyre, a book to which she often refers), and love, which she finds with her husband Oakley. Readers will savor many passages of this novel. On the electrification of Bethel Mountain ("a lovely lady's necklace laid out"), or the invention of birth control pills ("the greatest thing since drip dry"), and many other matters, Ivy writes with a verve and immediacy which prove that her creator, Lee Smith, is a storyteller supreme.

From Library Journal
This haunting epistolary novel captures the heartbreaking beauty of Appalachia through the voice of an engaging narrator: feisty Ivy Rowe, a born storyteller growing up on a pre-World War I farm. Poverty and early motherhood destroy her dream of writing professionally, but write she does, scores of letters from girlhood until death. In her descriptions of "Whitebear Whittington," tempestuous Depression-era coal camps, proud "holler" communities, and most of all the colorful Rowe clan of Sugar Fork, Virginia, Ivy brings her beloved home country and its lore to dramatic life. Her sassy, clearheaded reports blend unforgettably with her almost mystical passions as she pieces together the vivid quilt of her life. Smith's best work yet; highly recommended. Starr E. Absolutely brilliant. Best book I've read in a long time.
By David J. Gannon
Fair and Tender Ladies tells the lifelong story of Ivy Rowe, a woman growing up and growing old in Appalachian Virginia. The story is told totally through a long series of letters she writs to family, friends, lovers and acquaintances.

Ivy's life is one of abject poverty and hardship. Most of her siblings dies young. Her father is disabled through the majority of the book, Her mother is a tormented and exploited soul. Ivy has several chances to escape all this but the pull of place and family keeps her firmly entrenched where she is.

This out to be a thoroughly depressing book--instead it is a truly inspiring book. For, though objectively a person with virtually nothing, Ivy sees herself as uniquely blessed. The life force that carries her into old age is one that sees the glass perpetually as half full--her hardships are, to her eyes, less threatening and frightening than those she sees around her. She is essentially saved several times by people she dos not know or whom she has previously rejected. Though she is often exploited she does not allow those experiences to harden her heart.

This is not to say Ivy is soft or naive. She merely sees hard times as the burden of life and chooses to write her letters to make sense of it all where she can and merely record it if she can't.

I would have thought the letter format would wear after a while. It did not. It in fact created a sense of intimacy that enhanced the reading experience.

All in all, this is one of the best books I read in years. I was thoroughly enchanted throughout. I can only rejoice in the large body of work that lee Smith has for me to work through. If her other efforts are even a fraction as good as this book, I have a lot of great reading ahead of me.

Beware - emotional investment involved
By Elizabeth Helton
One of the best books I have read in a long time. I cannot adequately express the range of emotions evoked by the characters in this book and the depth of the personality of the main character caused me to think and question and at last, to understand. I like books that help me to grow in understanding of human nature. This is the kind of book that help the reader to grow in human kindness, if allowed.

The story is fascinating and holds my interest. I find the writing style somewhat simplistic. I've thought about laying it down for good but then.....I do want to see "what happens".
