Who was that masked woman? That was the question plaguing Perry Mason. No one loves a good mystery more than Mason―but being asked to represent a client who is concealing her identity, not to mention the particulars of her case, has given even the legendary legal eagle a case of ruffled feathers. Yet the intriguing cloak-and-dagger tactics have Perry hopelessly hooked. As for the silent siren behind the mask, is she heiress Byrl Gailord or penniless Adelle Hastings? Both women have ties to a man named Tidings, a man who may be a protector or predator. A man who could answer a lot of tough questions―if only he hadn't been murdered.

$10,000 Worth of Trouble
By Jeffrey Clinard
The hook was baited. Mason was summoned from the dead of night to his office, where he received $2,000 in cash, and the small end of a $10,000 bill. The client was a masked woman, and he had no way of knowing who she was, and how to prepare her defense.
Mason stumbles around trying to figure out how to protect his mystery client. Then even after he unmasks his client, he finds himself the victim of a frame-up by a suspect who tells a story which the district attorney is happy to believe.

A Close Call for Perry Mason
By Acute Observer
The Case of the Baited Hook

On a blustery March night Perry Mason got a phone call from “John L. Cragmore” who offers $1,000 if Perry will see him right now. Perry agrees, then calls the Drake Detective Agency to set watchers on the visitor. Robert Peltham is in trouble, but he wants Perry to protect the woman who came with him. But Perry can’t know the name or even hear her voice! Perry agrees, subject to his conditions, and the couple leaves (Chapter I). In Chapter II an elderly but dynamic woman visits Perry about a trust fund and an illegal adoption. Mrs. A.E. Tump explains a complicated situation. She doesn’t like Albert Tidings as the trustee for Byrl Gailord’s fortune. Chapter III begins with the newspaper report of mismanagement at a hospital; Albert Tidings is one of the trustees. The coded personal ad tells Perry he can represent Byrl Gailord. When Perry and Paul Drake go to interview Mrs. Tidings at her home they find a dead body. They call Homicide, then Mrs. Tidings returns.

Mrs. Tump and Byrl Gailord visit Perry Mason, who tells them Albert Tidings was murdered. Sergeant Holcomb shows up and begins to question Mrs. Tump and Gailord about their business with Albert Tidings, and their alibis. Carl Mattern, Albert Tidings’ secretary, tells Perry Mason that Mr. Tidings sold $50,000 worth of stock to buy shares in an unlisted prospecting company around noontime (Chapter V). Perry learns that Robert Peltham skipped out; the police went to question him as he co-signed the checks with Albert Tidings. The investigation continues on the other people involved. Would the death of a trustee negate a sale? Perry deduces the events from the facts about Tidings’ body - no shoes. This connects to Perry’s mysterious client. Perry then follows the woman who replied to his blind ad, but she notices her shadows. Adelle Hastings won’t answer Perry’s questions (Chapter VI). Perry pulls a slick stunt with a purse!

The investigation continues with the questioning of the bookkeeper, and we learn more about the case (Chapter VII). Perry goes to Peltham’s apartment, borrows his car, then plants a bloody coat with a bullet hole in it (Chapter VIII)! Perry visits Mattern to learn of his whereabouts that Tuesday; he has a perfect alibi (Chapter IX). But Perry’s questions drag out the truth. Now Perry deduces the identity of that mysterious woman and goes to question her. The interview ends when the police arrive to take her into custody (Chapter X). Next Perry goes to interview another person who was involved in this case (Chapter XI). Perry’s stunt with Peltham’s coat and car reels him in. But Paul Drake calls Perry to warn of a double cross; Sgt. Holcomb arrives to bring in Perry so the D.A. can question him! D.A. Hamilton Berger accuses Perry of criminal conspiracy and being an accessory after the fact to Tidings’ murder (Chapter XIII)! Perry uses his limited time to question the bookkeeper again (Chapter XIV). In the last chapter Perry explains the overlooked clue to Sgt. Holcomb, and how it is tied in with the known facts. The newspaper features the bookkeeper’s confession. Perry skated on thin ice and almost fell in. This is another story that you can’t put down.

I began reading this series as part of a college course on science fiction--and was hooked. I was transported--along with John Carter--into an exciting, captivating alien adventure. I liked the way that the spirit of the Old West drives these fast-paced stories, and I was surprised that they were not dated at all.

Timeless Tale of Adventure on Alien Worlds
By Amazon Customer
This volume neatly collects the first three novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary "Barsoom" or "John Carter of Mars" series, A Princess of Mars, The Gods of Mars, and Warlord of Mars.

When I picked up these books, I was somewhat familiar with their historical significance, and the role they've played in inspiring science fiction works that have come in the years following the publication of John Carter's first adventure on the Red Planet. However, I knew little of the series, and didn't know what to expect. Would it read similarly to E.E. Smith's Lensmen series? Or would its narrative be similar to that of the works of H.G. Wells?

I am happy to say that the past hundred years have done nothing to stunt that glory of these tales. One need only an open mind and a vivid imagination to join John Carter of Virginia as he finds himself transported to a strange and alien world. With a willing suspension of disbelief, the reader finds him or herself strolling the alien soil of this neighboring planet alongside such larger than life characters as Tars Tarkas, Sola, Dejah Thoris, faithful calot Woola, and John Carter himself.

The style is engaging, and I found it difficult to tear myself away from these compelling tales of strange and distant worlds for any reason.

Pure Entertainment

I've lost count of the number of times I've read and re-read everything Burroughs has written.
His writing style and his talent was questioned by his peers.
Today he's denounced for not being Politically correct. But if you just want an entertaining read, John Carter of Mars will fulfill your wants.

An incredible sequel that expands upon Ringworld.
By Harvey H. Meeker
The Ringworld Engineers is the sequel to Ringworld. In Ringworld, Larry Niven introduced us to the concept of a world made in the shape of an extraordinarily large ring encircling a star. In this book he gives us answers to questions we might not have even asked about the Ringworld, but that others apparently did. After the publication of Ringworld, Niven received numerous pieces of correspondence from people offering helpful information about the details of how the Ringworld would actually function. Niven took inspiration from the enthusiasm of those people and created the Ringworld Engineers in part to publish the answers to important questions about the structure. Around those answers he has created a thoughtful and engaging story that adds in a positive way to the Ringworld legacy.

The basic premise behind the Ringworld Engineers is that twenty or so years have passed since Louis Wu and Speaker To Animals returned from the Ringworld. Since then, Louis has withdrawn into a life of ascetic practices livened up by his addiction to current stimulation. Speaker to Animals (who has earned his full name of Chmeee for the treasure he brought back from the original Ringworld adventure) lives a prosperous life on Kzin having earned high status from his Ringworld discoveries. The circumstance that brings Louis and Chmeee back to the Ringworld is one quite familiar to them, but the situation they face upon arriving on the Ringworld is quite different than when they left. The Ringworld is moving out of position around the sun and the only way for Louis and Chmeee to find out how to fix it lies with the origins of the Ringworld Engineers.

I found the Ringworld Engineers to be engaging and interesting wholely apart from the original Ringworld. While certainly the references to parts of the original book are made more clear having read that novel, this book is very readable even having read Ringworld many years before. Having said that, I would advise that it is a good idea to read Ringworld first as there are certainly items of that book which are spoiled herein.

The way that Niven engages parts of his other novels of Known Space and entertwines them with this book made me want to go give some of those a shot as well. He truly is a master storyteller and this is one of his best novels on his own. Niven's collaborations with author Jerry Pournelle are also highly recommended. The classic The Mote In God's Eye as well as Footfall and Lucifer's Hammer are all very well done and certainly are must read novels for any Niven fan.

A hard read for non-english speakers
By Federico C.
Of course this review may miss the point of a proper review but maybe my experience can help someone. I have read several science fiction books in english (my native language is spanish) with the purpose of learning the language and avoid losing all the fine details from translation. Mr. Niven's writing is rather cofusing to me, especially in dialogs, where he doesn't specify who's talking. Some sentences can be said by more than one character making it difficult to follow the action. Also, some events or time lapses happen suddenly, without minimal preparation for the reader or without proper development. The novels by Dan Simmons or Orson Scott didn't present these complications to me.
I'm sure a native english speaker wouldn't have this problem but I though I'd still share my experience.

(Attention, Spoilers ahead)
As for the plot, I found it similar to Rendezvous with Rama in that great expectation is generated about an object, without real surprise at the end. Not enough for me at least, to make me want to continue reading books about the subject. The character of Luois Wu seemes clumsy with all those laughter episodes. If this behaviour is a consequence of the very special society that the books presents, then I think that element is not well developed. Also, I didn't find the theory of luck as an hereditary trait an attractive one, making me loose my interest in the book.

All in all, I didn't enjoy the read as much as i was expecting.

Sloppy editing in the Kindle edition
By Alan Babbitt
The second installment in the Ringworld story is entertaining but not so much as the first one was. Still, by itself, I would give it four stars. My issue is mainly with the editing of the Kindle edition. As the book progressed, more and more typographical errors creeped in until, near the end, there was at least one every couple pages. It becomes very distracting and affects my enjoyment of the story. Why can't publishers have someone actually read a book before it's released to the public, so these obvious mistakes can be corrected?

I'm on my second round with this excellent book.
By Editoria
This is another book that I bought twice. The first time was in the 1970s, and the second time this year when my original copy fell apart from so much use. If you're growing Swiss chard or spinach this year--or getting it from the farmer's market--turn directly to page 144 and make Cheesy Chard. Actually, read the recipe through to the bottom and make Bean Cheesy Chard. Love this stuff!

Nutritious and delicious
By S. Mann
Though one reviewer felt the format of this book was a poor choice, I found it to be perfect. I can leave a spare copy with one of my grocery bags so that I can pick out a new recipe or two while at the grocery store. I find that this lets me find the freshest foods available.

What I like most about this book is that with a little preperation and fore thought, you can do much of your cooking for meals in advance, and just combine ingredients and heat when meal time comes. This can be done because many of the recipes call for "cooked rice" or "cooked peas". I find that this also allows you to use leftovers up quickly, in new recipes.

One note, though, is that this book is not Vegan by any means. Many of the recipes call for dairy products and eggs.

Overall, it is a lovely lovely book and a must for those trying to live lightly on the earth.

A timeless cookbook
By Raymond Cooper
I bought this cookbook to replace a copy that I had used and loved so much that it was falling apart. The recipes in this book are great and the information on healthful eating is good even 20+ years after its publication. I have lots of newer cookbooks, but this is one of my favorites. Try the banana bread recipe on page 253.

Unusual concepts, sympathetic hero, fast pace make for an interesting way to pass time, but the writing didn't have much depth to make it memorable.

A riveting, orginal tale of honor and courage
By A Customer
I picked up "Shadow" after thoroughly enjoying Duncan's "Man of His Word" series. I was hoping for another good-natured, fun book. What I received was much more: Shadow is the tale of a man who becomes a noble's bodyguard - and takes the title of Shadow. His life becomes inextricably tied to that of his master. (thats the basic synopsis, since there isn't one given).
Although there are a few cliched characters in the book, the main cast is a well-rounded bunch that came alive for me. Duncan examines questions of honor and loyalty -- personal loyalty vs. loyalty to the crown -- in the midst of a compelling story.
The setting of the world is one of the most unique I have come across in a long time and for that alone I had to go back and reread the novel.
All-in-all, I would strongly recommend picking up Shadow -- you won't be dissappointed.

One of Duncan's two best
By Norman Siebrasse
In my opinion 'West of January' and 'Shadow' are Dave Duncan's two best books. Not only are these undoubtedly the best of his single book novels, in many ways they are better than his series. My other favourite works by Duncan are his earlier series -- in particular 'A Man of His Word', 'The Great Game' and 'The Seventh Swordsman'. West of January and Shadow are a distillation of what is best about Duncan; a coherent and intriguing alternative universe, excellent characterization and plotting -- plus a keen moral edge that is sometimes submerged in the storyline of his series. It's as if you took one of best series and squeezed the essence into a single book.

Amazon.com Review
Before Woody Allen set his sights on becoming the next Ingmar Bergman, he made a fleeting (but largely successful) attempt at becoming the next S.J Perelman. Side Effects, his third and final collection of humor pieces, shows his efforts. These essays appeared in The New Yorker during the late 1970s, as he showed more and more discontent with his funnyman status. Fear not, humor fans--Allen's still funny. He is less manic, however, than in his positively goofy Getting Even/Without Feathers days, and this makes Side Effects a more nuanced read. Woody picks and chooses when to flash the laughs, as in an article discussing UFOs: [I]n 1822 Goethe himself notes a strange celestial phenomenon. "En route home from the Leipzig Anxiety Festival," he wrote, "I was crossing a meadow, when I chanced to look up and saw several fiery red balls suddenly appear in the southern sky. They descended at a great rate of speed and began chasing me. I screamed that I was a genius and consequently could not run very fast, but my words were wasted. I became enraged and shouted imprecations at them, whereupon they flew away frightened. I related this story to Beethoven, not realizing he had already gone deaf, and he smiled and nodded and said, "Right." Though not as explosively, mind-alteringly funny as his earlier books, Side Effects is still loaded with chuckles; the much-anthologized "Kugelmass Episode" is worth the price of the book. For fans of his films--or for anyone who wants a final glimpse of Woody in his first, best role as court jester, Side Effects is a must-have. --Michael Gerber

Classic Woody Allen that is still delightful to read
By F. Orion Pozo
Side Effects is a collection of short humorous essays written by Woody Allen 30 years ago. It is his third book and still very funny. Much of the humor is based in New York and Jewish cultural idioms with a sprinkling of mock intelligentsia - all with the neurotic, self-absorbed insecure point of view that he made famous.

The first piece, "Remembering Needleman," is a satirical take off on scholarly obituaries. Only Woody Allen would think of bringing marshmallows to a cremation and to donate the ashes to a university for research.

"The Condemned" takes a humorous look at Elie Weisel's Dawn where a man must decide whether to kill a truly evil person.

"By Destiny Denied" is 7 pages of notes for an 800 page novel that was never meant to be written.

"The UFO Menace" is Allen's take on the existence of UFOs.

"My Apology" puts Woody Allen in Socrates' place as he faces death by hemlock.

In "The Kugelmass Episode" the protagonist finds a magic way to cheat on his wife by going back in literature to have an affair with Emma Bovary.

In "My Speech to the Graduates" we find Allen's philosophy most succinctly spelled out: "We are a people who lack definite goals. We have never learned to love. We lack leaders and coherent programs. We have no spiritual center. We are adrift alone in the cosmos wreaking monstrous violence on one another out of frustration and pain. Fortunately, we have not lost our sense of proportion."

"The Diet" explores the insecurities often associated with working in corporate America. A person only identified as F. deals with his work problems by taking control of the only thing he can - his food intake.

"The Lunatic's Tale" is about a successful doctor who is driven crazy by his love for two different women. The ending is right out of a 1950's sci-fi movie.

"Reminiscences: Places and People" is composed of one-page memories of Brooklyn, New Orleans, Paris, Mexico, and a meeting with a famous author.

In "Nefarious Times We Live In" we are taken inside the mind of a person who attempts to assassinate a president.

"A Giant Step for Mankind" takes a humorous look at scientific research. How do scientists develop techniques like the Heimlich Maneuver for dinner table choking? See the actual research journals here.

"The Shallowest Man" reads like a Hasidic fable set in modern New York about death, love, and caring.

"The Query" is a short play in which Abraham Lincoln tells a joke that changes his life and saves the life of another man.

"Fabrizio's: Criticism and Response" treats the restaurant review as scholarly criticism, complete with reader responses.

"Retribution" reads a bit like the movie Annie Hall with ideal romance thwarted by human foible.

Woody Allen fans will love the book. Others will find some classic Allen humor that is still delightful to read, if neurosis, problematic human relationships, and death are things you like to read about.

The Third In a Must Have Woody Allen Collection of Shorts
By Thor Vader
This book is the third in a collection of short stories by Woody Allen that includes Getting Even and Without Feathers. As with the other books, I found the book entirely delightful as well as a very quick read. As in any collection of short stories, some are better than others, but there are at least three classics that make the purchase worthwhile regardless of how you feel about the others.
In this book Woody Allen keeps the one-liners coming at such a pace that I cannot believe anyone could be so witty. His writing is always filled with puns and intentional misdirection that keep the reader actively involved in the book. I found myself reading the stories straight though, and finished the book in two sittings, though each story is short enough to read on the fly when you have some extra time.
If you are a fan of Woody Allen, then this book is another in your obligation to get more Woody. If you don't like his movies, then you will likely not like this book, as his idiosyncratic mannerisms come across in the writing.

Multi-Sided View of Woody Allen in Humorous Essay Set
By Anthony G Pizza
Those coming to know Woody Allen from his legendary film work or infamous personal scandals will find uproarious laughter and glimpses of insight in "Side Effects." This is third in a collection of short stories and essays Allen wrote mostly for the New Yorker during his late 70s commercial/creative peak.
Those strictly seeking laughs from a master will find them in one-act playlets like "The Query" and "My Apology" and in vignettes like "Reminisces: Places and People." Each focusing on death, they underline Carol Burnett's observation "Comedy is tragedy plus time." (Alan Alda recited this line as a smarmy TV personality in Allen's 1990 "Crimes and Misdermeanors.") But Allen also unintentionally, tragicomically mixes asides and references to fallen icons like OJ Simpson, the World Trade Center (constant symbol of size here) and even Igor Stravinsky (an allegory for sophistication and complexity.)
Yet Allen maintains his unparalleled character detail and nuance even in this short format (Few stories are more than six pages and are easily readable at one sitting.) You come to care for the TV producer who consoles a friend and eyes a nurse in "The Shallowest Man." You feel a painful twinge at the father-son dialogue closing the otherwise nonsensical "The Diet." You also sense the balding, hairy Kugelmass' giddy joy as he romances Emma Bovary and changes literature in "Kugelmass Episode." (Few main male characters in Allen's stories here are as attractive as the women they pursue.) Strangest and most disturbing of all, after reading of the love triangle in "Retribution," you again vaguely recall the personal events which brought Allen's personal life into the tabloid spotlight, outshining his artistic legacy to this day.
"Side Effects" is easily read in an afternoon or in quick bites when opportunity presents. As with any number of his classic films, "Side Effects" reveals touches of Woody Allen's life and worldview - but the part he wishes you to see. Recommended, but also check any of his legendary 70s or 80s films ("Zelig" and "Radio Days" two personal favorites) or his still hilarious 1960s comedy LPs.

A New Girl At Sector General
By Queen Cobra, Goddess of Truth and Justice
Cha Thrat is a Somaradvan warrior-surgeon, one of the first *female* warrior surgeons. She is also a stickler for the traditional proprieties of her calling which makes her very unpopular with her collegues and superiors. Her unsatifactory career takes a dramatic turn when she is called upon to treat an injured human. Dispite her ignorance of the species she manages to save the life of a Monitor Corps Captain who shows his gratitude by getting her an appointment to Sector General. Though intelligent, adaptable and eager to please Cha Thrat manages to create havoc in every ward to which she is assigned. Determined not to return home a failure she accepts a transfer to the Hospital's maintenance staff and quickly discovers the work is neither menial nor dull. For a while it looks like Cha Thrat has finally found her niche - then a maintenance job takes her aboard the Ambulance Ship Rhabwar and she finds herself breaking rules and offending people all over again. This entry in the Sector General Series is especially interesting for its close up look at the work of the Maintenance Department and is the first novel to be told from a non-human, and female, POV.

First volume from an alien viewpoint: Cha Thrat
By Michele L. Worley
All the previous volumes in the series were told from the viewpoint of Dr. Peter Conway, except for the first story in _Hospital Station_. All the volumes from this point on are from the viewpoint of other characters, no two the same, and only two of them human. _Code Blue Emergency_ not only has the honor of being the first experiment with the new style, but is the first story told from the viewpoint of one of the non-human staff members: Cha Thrat, the first female to achieve the status of warrior-surgeon among her people, and how she came to be the first and so far only Sommaradvan to join Sector General's staff.

This is a wonderful classic Medical SiFi Series.
By SueB
I highly recommend the Sector General Series. It was a standard setter in its time, and is timeless in its wonderful writing, forward thinking on medical breakthroughs, character, and versatility of aliens needing help and their variety of medical needs. The plot lines are strong, the scenes so well written you can feel you are there, and the characters and dialogue top notch. I highly recommend these and all the James White books to readers who haven't yet had the pleasure of reading them. They are the kind you will likely keep and reread often over time.

The Vicar of Christ, by Walter F Murphy

This book is an unusual, fascinating and well-written observation of the life of a man who was first a war hero and Medal f honor winner from the Krean War, then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, thirdly a monk, and finally, elected Pope. His overly exciting life is described by three men who 'knew him well.' The first narrator is a Marine, telling of their time together in Korea. The second, a Constitional scholar and Supreme Court Justice appalled at the new Chief Justice, narrates the second phase. The third is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church; fat, kind but distracted. The Marine cares for him the most, the Supreme Court Justice condescends and despises him, and the Cardinal is much more interested in food than his subject. But Declan Walsh was a man who earned the Medal of Honor while ordering the death of his best friend, ruled pragmatically and energetically on the Court but lost his wife to death and neglect, and became a miraculous healer assasinated for challenging the powers that rule the secular world. A good read!

Outstanding book!
By Michael S. Chavez
I originally bought this book when it first was issued in paperback. While packing to move over 10 years ago, I gave away 15 boxes of books, including this one. I've regretted it ever since, and have often spoken of the book to my family and friends. Finally, I decided to get another copy, and I've enjoyed it as much as the first time through.

It is well-written, well-paced, and speaks of what might be for the Catholic Church (I'm a cradle Catholic) were to be led by someone with the simple humanity of Papa Francesco! Despite the pretty much inevitable denouement, I was still captivated by the story and inspired by the fictional life of this man.

Review
"One of the best novelists writing today" P.D. James "Ruth Rendell has quite simply transformed the genre of crime writing. She displays her peerless skill in blending the mundane, commonplace aspects of life with the potent murky impulses of desire and greed, obsession and fear" Sunday Times "Rendell never fails to come up trumps, and her millions of admirers will eagerly consume this offering as they have all the others." The Irish Times "A firm grasp of social concerns ensure that her novels are reflective of our own times, as well as hugely absorbing." -- Louise Welsh The Times "This is Rendell on cracking form, with the entire accoutrements one expects from her." The Good Book Guide

From the Inside Flap
Elizabeth Nightingale found peace and tranquility on her nightly walks through the rich, dense forests surrounding Myfleet Manor. But the peace she treasured was shattered one night when she found death waiting in the woods. Chief Inspector Wexford and his colleague Inspector Burden find a most unsavory case on their hands -- and must use all their wit and wisdom to solve it . . .

Good with a super ending
By Veronica
I don't think this is one of Rendell's best Wexford novels but it does have a good plot, a diverse cast of characters and some thought-provoking material. If you enjoy Wexford novels then you'll be missing out if you don't read this one eventually, but it isn't one of my favourites. The best part of the book was the ending, which I found to be very surprising and shocking.

This time Wexford is investigating the murder of Elizabeth Nightingale, living a dull, well-off life in the country with her husband Quentin. Their marriage is completely passionless and sexless, but someone reacts violently enough to Elizabeth to murder her on one of her evening walks in the forest. Then along come Detectives Wexford and Burden to crack the case and drag up the psychology behind the characters.

Perhaps one of the reasons why I'm not raving about this novel is because the type of characters shown in it are my least favourite - a wealthy upper class couple, their servants and wealthy, upper class friends. I much prefer a detective novel that focuses on normal people rather than the Master and Mistress of the house and their stereotypical rough and uneducated working class servants. This certainly isn't a side of England that I recognise anymore and Rendell's newer Wexford novels reflect this, tending to focus on all different kinds of people in the social scale without being stereotypical. One of my favourite characters was Sean Lovell, whose thwarted ambitions to become a singer were strangely touching, particularly when Wexford overhears him pretending to be a popstar in his shed (we've all done it, haven't we? :-) )

The novel also looks at what it means to be a woman in 1970s Britain. Unfortunately, the females in this novel are probably the weakest characters, such as a housewife who has given up her job to devote herself to her husband who doesn't really seem to like her anyway and a rather silly Swedish au pair. One of the themes of the book seems to be `what makes a good woman'. What strikes me is that in this book the men act pretty much as they like without anybody commenting on their behaviour, but every aspect of each woman is judged and examined. It made interesting, if frustrating, reading.

Overall, a good book with a brilliant ending. Due to the publication date of this novel (early 70s) it is rather old-fashioned, but the psychology is still relevant.

Enjoyable, but not Rendell's usual great work.
By A Customer
. . . . . . . .. .. . .~ - * * * - ~
~ - ~ This was not one of Ruth Rendell's best. Her strength is usually in creating believable characters in almost un-imaginable situations.
~ - ~ In this story, the Lady of the Manor, Elizabeth Nightingale, is murdered in the forest right near her home. Most of the characters seem like stereotypes. There is the wealthy husband who doesn't really understand his wife. Upstairs lives the Au Pair - a young Dutch woman apparently only interested in her sex life. The housekeeper and gardener speak nothing but praise of their employer. The young under-gardener worships the "Lady of the House", and believes she's promised him help in his wish for a career as a DJ and a singer. Her brother is a neurotic scholarly writer who dislikes his sister. Her sister-in-law may benefit from the will.
~ - ~The book is entertaining, but not nearly as absorbing as Rendell's usual. You may be able to guess the killer and motive. The ending was a surprise to me, but not nearly as powerfully surprising as Ruth Rendell's usual twists and turns. Inspector Wexford hardly did any inspecting, mostly listening to a narrative from a friend of the family. Even just listening to the tale of the family's history seemed to take an inordinately long time- 3 or 4 days of conversations.
~ - ~ This book is entertaining, and easy to get interested in. However, for a sample of the best of Inspectors Wexford and Burden- I suggest two much more absorbing books: "Road Rage" and "No More Dying Then"

Excellent murder mystery
By A Customer
Terrific vintage Rendell, one of the best Chief Inspector Wexford mysteries. The wealthy and beautiful Elizabeth Nightingale is murdered one night in the woods, and it is up to the intelligent, cantankerous Wexford and his sidekick Burden to solve the crime. This appears at first to be a fairly ordinary mystery; the leisurely pace and sharp humor may fool the reader into thinking that this is a peaceful, quiet novel. The final revelation, however, is disturbing and shocking, one of the author's most gripping and powerful conclusions. Otherwise, a fairly light, literate, entertaining mystery, written in Rendell's irresistably readable prose style, filled with ingenious plot twists and numerous red herrings. A bravura performance; even this comparatively minor work shows that Rendell can easily outwrite the vast majority of her contemporaries.
