different from what i expected...
By A Customer
this book was not what i expected. it may be a very good book for those who cook or intend to cook 3 meals a day. But when i bought this book, i thought it was about making a full balanced meal at one time. this book is set up a bit differently. it gives instructions to prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner all at once. the breakfast needs some bit of dinner leftovers, the dinner requires some part of lunch leftovers and the lunch needs some ingredient from the breakfast. So in order to make one meal, you have to make all 3 meals. so if you just want to come home and cook a single meal of dinner, then this book is not for that.

Cooking for an Army?
By S. Marcantelli
I am not a vegetarian but I would like to become one. I bought this book because it offered balanced vegetarian breakfasts, lunches and dinners - just what I was looking for. However, the dinners are HUGE! Of course, a person does not have to cook every dish on the menu, and she does state that, but the whole reason I was drawn to this book was I wanted a book that would say, "Here eat this and you'll get all the nutrients you'll need as a vegetarian." I did not have a problem, as one reviewer did, with the idea that I would need ingredients from dinner, for example, for breakfast the next day. In fact I liked that idea. The first fall menu is: Miso Soup, Brown Rice, Aduki Beans, Sauteed Carrols, Onions and Squash and Cabbage Salad. Doesn't that sound great? For this meal, she writes that you will need TWO 2 or 3 quart covered pots, a 4-quart pressure cooker or 3-quart covered pot, plus a skillet or saucepan. Do you have, or usually need, that many pots? I don't. The next day after cooking this dinner, you use the left-over rice for breakfast, the left-over aduki beans for a soup for lunch and the left-over sauteed carrots-onions-squash in a dish of fried rice with vegetables, also part of the lunch. I like that. I will screw up my courage eventually to try to see how I can use this book, perhaps even buy some more pots and whatever, but I wish someone had written a review warning me about the cooking vessels needed to do the menus as written. (Waffle iron needed for breakfast number three, by the way.)

A Classic ... A good place to start
By jumpy1
With this book, I started at the first fall menu and started cooking my way through it. It's been totally doable. The recipes are so simple and laid out with directions of what to do first, second etc. that preparing entire meals with dessert gets faster with time. (She includes a healthy dessert in most of them.) I have noticed a couple mismarkings that would've affected the whole dish if I hadn't caught them, and while some of the recipes are really wonderful, others are just plain yuck! (I know it's health food but sometimes it goes too far!) As for flavor, it's definitely on the side of the old "healthy" stuff. If you're looking for the creative haute-cuisine vegetarian/vegan stuff you can find today, this is not it. However, the meals make me feel good and satisfied. They are so balanced, I find I don't crave sweets afterwards. The suggestions for what to do with the leftovers are really useful. Also, if you are nervous (as I was) about using all of these strange ingredients, the directions are simple enough that you'll become a pro in no time. One more thing - my complexion has really improved since I started using this book.

THE GREATEST FANTASY EPIC OF OUR TIME

Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo–alone and unaided–who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside . . .

This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by J.R.R. Tolkien in his bestselling epic The Lord of the Rings.

Amazon.com Review
From the Illustrated Edition of The Hobbit "[This was] in fact no other than the great Thorin Oakenshield himself, who was not at all pleased at falling flat on Bilbo's mat with Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur on top of him." "All that the unsuspecting Bilbo saw that morning was an old man with a staff. He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which his long white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots." "Smaug lay, with wings folded like an immeasurable bat, turned partly on one side, so that the hobbit could see his underparts and his long pale belly crusted with gems and fragments of gold from his long lying on his costly bed."

A worthy addition to anyone's collection
By Juan Albarrán
Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

The finest edition of LOTR ever published
By Larry D. Curtis
While the price of this book is steep, this is easily the best version of this book in print. The gilded pages and high-quality leather look, smell and feel wonderful. This is not the questionable quality leather used on previous versions, this is the real deal. More importantly, this version has, as J.R.R. recorded in letters, reproductions of the Book of Marzubul. These are the pages from the Dwarven book found in the Mines of Moria by Gandalf and the Fellowship. In the begining and ending of the book are also included maps that fold out to render Middle-earth for the reader, again as the author originally wanted.

This is the book that Tolkien dreamed of having published but couldn't due to the realities of post-WWII publishing costs and questions about a 400,000 word publication.

For me, there is an emtoional response to this book for two reasons. One, it is as fine or better than the book the author originally wished to have published and two, it is a beautiful piece of art all on its own, suitable for display. If you love books or love Tolkien or both, this is a must have and the centerpiece of any worthy collection.

(Some are commenting that the book isn't actually leather. Be sure to check your version as there are others available, but the information provided to me stated my copy was leather and if it is fake, it fooled me.)

Excellent Edition
By Marcella G.
In view of the newly found popularity of Tolkien's classic, I decided to update my old Unwin Paperback edition of LOTR. I compared several editions out there (Boxed Rei, Houghton Mifflin and the sober Harper-Collins with the black cover and the single ring in the centre), and decided to buy this one. It is, hands down, the best.

The folding maps need some care, if you're like me and try to keep your books as if they were brand new. Overall, it's very well put together and makes a great addition to my library.

I'm sorry if this review seems superficial, but I feel all that should be written about the books themselves has already been written--and perhaps more. Suffice to say that this is the edition for the true fan of the books, although the whole thing makes a rather big (and elegant) tome to carry around the house.

If you want your children to read it, perhaps a less intimidating edition would be in order, though (my old Unwin set is ideal for that, and it's making its way to the younger in the family).

Foster, The Black Hole
By Awilson
The Black Hole by Alan Dean Foster was a science fiction novel for me. I mean that it was predictable for me because it involved things like space ships, robots, lots of technology that the author must explain to the reader, and a large chunk of the story being devoted completely to these and other complex explanations. I find that characterization in a lot of novels like this gets forgotten about when it comes to descriptions of futuristic things. Still, I was drawn in (no pun intended) by the title. I have always had a fascination for things like tornadoes and giant whirlpools. Nature is fascinating and in this book, Foster describes the black hole as "nature gone insane." The book held my interest because of the descriptions of the black hole throu-out, but failed to really interest me in anything else. The basic story of a ship exploring deep space for other life and coming across a much larger ship near a massive black hole (a ship that was supposed to be lost forever) is intriguing, especially when we learn that the captain of the ship is planning on traveling through the black hole in the name of science and insanity and so on.
In short, a science fiction novel with all of the stereotypes firmly in place with an ending interesting enough to me to give it three stars for the amount of entertainment I got out of it. I will shortly forget the major details but the ending will stick with me.

Too Bad The Ending Gets Sucked Down The Black Hole
By KGK1995
I picked up this novelization to find out what in the world happened at the end of the movie. In almost all cases the book is better than the movie, but not this time. If you want a coherent ending, this book disappoints. The last page (213) of my 1979 Del Rey / Ballantine edition has hanging sentences and paragraphs that have no beginning. Seems like someone else didn't know how to end this book either, so they choose not to.
I had to press forward through the first fifty pages but the middle and most of the ending is a great read - burn the last three pages.
This is not a kiddie book. A good read for young adults and adults. It is refreshing to read a novelization using vocabulary like "desiccation", "subsumed", "quiescent", and "stanchion". I appreciated the major themes, such as good and evil, more with the book than the film.
Not a bad little science fiction jaunt with a fascinating topic. A better ending would have helped tremendously.

I always liked this book because it had some bits not found ...
By Carpo Collins
It's a movie novelization from Alan Dean Foster- the king of film novelizations. I always liked this book because it had some bits not found in the film such as how the story takes place during Christmastime (on Earth). My only real complaint- the ending is very undeveloped, though this is by no means Mr. Foster's fault- staff at Disney had difficulty coming up with an ending (which was developed in the 11th hour, reputedly). I also like some details such as what kinds of food and herbs were grow in the greenhouse aboard the Cygnus. If you're a fan of the original film and don't have this (or the original screenplay), then get hold of this book.

Diamond Mask (Galactic Milieu Trilogy), by Julian May

The 21st century was drawing to a close, and metapsychic humankind was poised at last to achieve Unity -- to be admitted into the group mind of the already unified alien races of the Galactic Milieu. But a growing corps of rebels was plotting to keep the people of Earth forever separate in the name of human individuality. And the rebels had a secret supporter: Fury, the insane metapsychic creatrue that would stop at nothing to claim humanity for itself. Fury's greatest enemy was the mutant genius Jack the Bodiless, whose power it craved. But Jack would never be a tool for Fury . . .
And so it turned to Dorothea Macdonald, a young woman who had spent a lifetime hiding her towering mindpowers from the best mind readers of the Milieu. But she could not hide them from Fury -- or from Jack. Time and again she rejected their advances, unwilling to be drawn into the maelstrom of galactic politics or megalomaniacal dreams. And in the end, no one -- not Jack, not Fury, not even the Galactic Milieu -- would be a match for the awesome powers of the girl who would come to be called Diamond Mask . . .

From Publishers Weekly
In spite of a confusing opening section, those who persevere through Book II of the intricate Galactic Milieu Trilogy will discover an intriguing piece of work. Set in the year 2113 and told through the memoirs of Rogatien Remillard, the story looks back on events that took place half a century earlier, when humanity became part of a vast galactic civilization. Remillard's family, virtually immortal and psychically gifted, has become Earth's most powerful force. On the death of the evil Victor Remillard in 2040, an insane metapsychic creature known as Fury comes into being. Fury uses several corrupt younger Remillards, known collectively as Hydra, as its agent against his Great Enemy, the powerful young mutant Jon Remillard (from Book I, Jack the Bodiless ). Equal in power to both Jon and Fury is the young Dorothea Macdonald, who comes to be known as Diamond Mask. Will she join forces with Jon to oppose Fury, or will that frightful entity use her for its own purposes? May holds out the promise of answers in the trilogy's concluding volume, Magnificat. Meanwhile, readers should be forewarned not to peek at the final page here, where the Fury's secret is revealed. Then again, maybe it isn't.

From Library Journal
Set in the years between humanity's acceptance into the "galactic milieu" and its achievement of telepathic "unity" with other metapsychic races, this sequel to Jack the Bodiless ( LJ 12/91) follows the early life of Dorothea Macdonald, a young woman striving to deny her formidable mental powers yet destined to become one of the world's most powerful minds. Dorothea's fate links her with the dynastic Remillard family and the psychopathic killer known only as "Fury," forcing her to accept the keys that will unlock her talents. The author of the "Pliocene Saga" maintains a personal focus on her luminary characters, opening their private lives to intense scrutiny while at the same time expanding the boundaries of an imaginative future world. Rich in intrigue and vibrating with creative energy, this is a superb addition to sf collections.

From Booklist
This is the second book in May's Galactic Milieu trilogy that began with Jack the Bodiless (1991) and, when completed, will constitute a full-scale prequel to her immensely popular Saga of Pliocene Exile. The central figure here is the potently but secretly metapsychic woman Dorotea, who comes to be known as Diamond Mask. She becomes the object of competition between Jack the Bodiless and the madman Fury, and in the course of surviving their battle, she realizes her own extraordinary powers. May is definitely a writer of the throw-in-everything-by-the-double-handful school, which occasionally makes for soggy pacing. But it also makes for an enormous cast of vivid characters and a world with an admirably lived-in quality, complete with the small-group politics of the metapsychics and their alien allies. May has largely earned her impressive following, which makes this book a virtually mandatory acquisition. Roland Green

A romantic comedy where everyone knew what everyone else was thinking probably wouldn't involve romance or comedy
By Michael Battaglia
There are times when its clear that May is having a blast writing this series and there are moments when, having come up with a complicated future history, she looks at it with vaguely veiled exasperation and says, "Geez, now I have to write all this out?"

One of the ways she seems to be keeping the series fresh for herself is by introducing new characters (or fleshing out ones that were only briefly mentioned earlier) and playing those new characters off the established characters to see what happens. In fact, she's so good at defining her characters and the relationships between them that sometimes she almost forgets that there's supposed to be a plot going on in the background.

Here, we start to accelerate forward in time a little bit faster as she introduces us to Scottish lass Dorothea Macdonald, who figures out very early on that she has vast mental powers and also decides she wants as little to do with them as possible, causing her to basically hide them and pretend to be normal, difficult to do when you learn how to read minds and can hear what everyone thinks about you. She's fated to become the formidable Diamond Mask (which sounds like those ladies who are always trying to seduce and/or kill James Bond) and fall in love with the presumably hard to fall in love with Jack the Bodiless, who has now grown into a teenager, although given that he exists as a floating disembodied brain that keeps forming new bodies around himself, you can be forgiven if its hard to tell how old he is. But at least he doesn't have to worry about acne. And since she's destined to fall in love with him, she does the sensible thing and hates him the first time she even hears about him. What's a detached cerebrum that only wants emotional support to do?

Much of the book is the gradual development of Dorothea from a young lady of about five to what she eventually becomes, with the rest of the subplots sort of dancing around that central focus. Its interesting to read, mostly because of May's gifts with characterization, but its becoming clear around this point that May isn't so interested in narrative drive as much as simply depicting the human side of the events that make it to the highlights in her history. Its a ground level view of the extraordinary but its like exploring George Washington's life by using a calendar. Sometimes you just want to skip to the good stuff.

To that end the main concerns from the first book are still in play. Humanity is still trying to come to grips with the fact that the Galactic Milieu is about to enfold them into the collective with something called Unity, which chunks of people aren't exactly keen on and in fact some of them are so not-keen on it that they're secretly banding together to form a rebel group that seems to be leaning toward armed insurrection but isn't quite clear. To be honest, the rebel portions of the series have always been the weakest parts for me. I understand the need to move deliberately when you're attempting to separate yourself from a whole slew of alien races that are potentially more powerful than you are, but after two solid books they're still gathering in rooms debating who they should recruit and agreeing that they should do something soon about this. Out of all the subplots this one feels the most like May is marking time until we get to the foretold Metaphysical Rebellion that Marc is apparently supposed to lead, so she has to keep checking in on it to remind us that she hasn't forgotten about it but clearly nothing is going to happen until the third book. The concept of the rebellion itself is interesting in that May has a number of people who should be protagonists talking frankly about overthrowing the aliens, who have so far been nothing but nice, giving the plot a bit of a subtle xenophobic streak that the book intelligently doesn't call attention to, letting you decide for yourself whether these people are doing it for a good cause or simply out of a misplaced racism.

The other big plot is the mystery of who Fury is as he and what's left of Hydra continue to randomly murder their way across the landscape. With the collective of Hydra revealed and gone into hiding what's really left is wondering which of the Remillards is unwittingly harboring Fury (since it becomes clear fairly early that he's a manifestation of a split personality) . . . something that the book takes a stab at revealing at the very end although that by that point the number of possibilities are fairly limited unless you figure she's going to stick Fury in someone random. Fury occupies a bit of a strange place in the series, as a definite antagonist he's the boogeyman that everyone is afraid of even if his impact seems to be limited to a leeriness about his future plans and the tragedies he leaves in his wake. And while he's clear he has a plan its not totally clear what that plan is, unless you want to argue that he's acting like the Joker would without Batman, sowing chaos constantly without any end except pure destruction. With the mystery of who Hydra is settled it saps the concept of some of its power since it becomes a crazy smart person talking to other crazy people who are in its thrall. Their tendency to strike without warning even while basically hiding in plain sight gives the book an off kilter edge at times and while their eventual confrontation with Dorothea almost pushes the book toward a superhero comic, it is at least a dramatic high point.

Which is good, because for the most part May is clearly more concerned with the characters as people instead of historical figures and you can nearly sense her wishing that she hadn't set out the fates for the more prominent characters already so it would give her a chance to play with them more. Ol' Bodiless Jack himself remains the most fascinating character in the crew, clearly the most powerful and most idiosyncratic, he has a boundless curiosity that belies the tragedy of his life. He remains steadfastly good hearted and yet unpredictable, human but only barely so at times. The scenes with him make the book come a bit more alive, especially as the narrative skips forward in time (mostly to give Dorothea a chance to get older and catch up with everyone else) and you can see his development. He remains the most vibrant and the eventual scenes with Diamond Mask show you why he might frighten her and why she might also warm up to him later (two of the best scenes in the book are when they're just sitting talking to each other). When she focuses on the characters, even when their traits might become tiresome (despite Rogi being the narrator, he seems to be pushed more and more to the side, set enough in his ways between his functional alcoholism and unwillingness to let anyone into his head that there seems to be nowhere for him to go) the story shines in their interactions, giving the book a family feel, if everyone in your family was a hundred years old.

It's that ability to create characters with problematic flaws that acts as the book's engine even when its clear that the plot is something that will be dealt with when the book darn well feels like it (that does mean some characterizations get short shrift, notably Marc's Anakin Skywalker like transformation into what will eventually be the leader of the rebellion). Some of this is middle child syndrome, having given us the premise in the first book and unable to give us any dramatic climaxes until the last book she only has to steady the course and get everyone in position. That she does so by centering it around the eventual romance of a reluctant telepath and a boy without a body at least shows some lateral thinking. If she can't juggle all the pieces to give everything the time it deserves it does at least prove that some writing talent and enough imaginative balls in the air can keep you reading at least long enough to want to see how it all ends.

Great book, bogus (publisher) marketing strategy
By growupalready
I love this series of books, and when I got my Kindle, I was looking forward to re-reading them on the new toy. But I cannot understand why the publisher is releasing the 1st book (Jack the Bodiless) after books 2 & 3, and why books 1 & 3 are $7 but book 2 is $18. That's just absurd. For a book that is over 15 years old, why do they find it necessary to rip off faithful readers? Also, why won't they make Intervention available? Publishers attitudes about e-book marketing are incomprehensible to me. I know, I'm just whining. But really!

A Diamond Whose Size Is Its Only Flaw
By Amanda M. Hayes
It was Julian May's novels of the Pliocene Exile that first introduced me to her concepts of metapsychic powers and the Galactic Milieu. I enjoyed them very much--but hesitated for some time before checking out any of the prequels of the Galactic Milieu Trilogy; I doubted they could be nearly as good as the others, lacking the hilarious antics of Aiken Drum. And now I must confess to being a convert! Aiken or no Aiken, _Diamond Mask_ and its predecessor won me over thoroughly.

Imagine it: in the not-too-distant future, humankind has learned that there really *is* life out there; moreover, that life down *here* is richer than was once thought. Psychic gifts have finally been recognized, and are being trained to their highest potential. New technology has made nearly everything we have today obsolete, and death has almost been conquered thanks to such miracles as genetic medicine and rejuvenation tanks. However, some things never change... and the tendency of mankind to get into messes is one of them. These ideas appeared in _Jack the Bodiless_, and continue to be brought to life by May's grand talent in this sequel.

_Diamond Mask_ doesn't only have an intriguing premise and fabulous writing; it is also possessed of a plotline that's deliciously chilling without being frightening enough to give one nightmares. The metapsychic monsters Fury and Hydra introduced in _Jack the Bodiless_ are still on the loose and as horrifying in their power--and their mystery--as ever, tangling now with entirely new characters. Enter Dorothea Macdonald, a lady as interesting in her own right as any Remillard and another legend introduced the Saga of the Pliocene Exile. While I can't say the Blessed Illusio was quite as I imagined her, it was certainly a pleasure to learn her story. I look forward to its continuation in _Magnificat_.

If the book has a flaw, it's that it's too short: more information about Dorothea's early life would have been welcome; likewise, I wouldn't have minded a bit more insight into Jack and Marc's working relationship... or the lives of the various Remillards... or--well, all right, so it would have been nice to get more detail on any number of things. Still, _Diamond Mask_ is a delightful page-turner that I'd thoroughly recommend to series fans and those new to May's Milieu (though the latter may wish to read _Jack the Bodiless_ first) alike.

Robot believers at the far end of the galaxy endeavor to create a true religion, but their efforts could be shattered by a shocking revelation. Far in the future, on the remote planet End of Nothing, sentient robots are engaged in a remarkable enterprise. They call their project Vatican-17: an endeavor to create a truly universal religion presided over by a pope, whose extreme godliness and infallible artificial intelligence are fed by telepathic human Listeners who psychically delve into the mysteries of the universe. But the great and holy mission could be compromised by one shocking revelation that threatens to inspire serious crises of faith among the spiritual, truth-seeking robotic acolytes while tearing them into warring religious factions; for the Listener Mary is claiming that she has just discovered Heaven.

There are those among the Clifford D. Simak faithful who consider Project Pope his masterpiece. But whether the crowning literary achievement of a multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning science-fiction Grand Master or merely another brilliant novel of speculative fiction to stand among his many, Simak's breathtaking search for God in the machine ingeniously blends science and spirituality in a truly miraculous way that few science fiction writers, if any, have been able to accomplish.

Project Pope
By John T. Farrell
Very interesting and very clever. Interesting, because Simak presents new insights in the longstanding debate between theology and science, faith and knowledge. Clever, because Simak's characters and their worlds are breathtakingly imaginative. He peoples his planet, the End of Nothing, with a variety of fascinating creatures, from robot cardinals to a computer pope to a sentient cloud of molecules. All have souls and all seek the truth. In many ways, this novel reminds me of C.S. Lewis -- had Lewis not been so sure of himself and his theology.

Not exciting, but totally fascinating.
By Thomas Farrell
In this book, Simak explores ideas about what it means to be human, mankind's search for knowledge, the need for spiritual fulfillment, and what ultimately brings us happiness. Heavy stuff for a science fiction novel, and this is a great book to handle it.
This was the first of Simak's books I read, and it inspired me to immediately look for more. I think it's a real page-turner for the intellectual set and if you're into books where there isn't a lot of action but there's plenty to think about, you'll love this one.
My one caveat is that the ending is a bit weak - I was left with the feeling that while the most vital elements of the plot had been resolved, the story could easily have gone on for another thousand pages or so. Perhaps Simak didn't do a good job of bringing conclusiveness to the end of the book, or perhaps he just created such an interesting story that I was left craving more, it's hard to say.

What is a robot to do?
By wizard
What is a robot to do when the world's largest Christian religion refuses to recognize it as a child of God. Start its own religion, of course. And this is what project Pope is all about, robots' search for God. In the end, they succeed beyond their wildest dreams, proving that God does not discriminate, but makes Himself known to all who seek Him...even robots!
A very inspirational novel!

I originally bought this book when it first was issued in paperback. While packing to move over 10 years ago, I gave away 15 boxes of books, including this one. I've regretted it ever since, and have often spoken of the book to my family and friends. Finally, I decided to get another copy, and I've enjoyed it as much as the first time through.

It is well-written, well-paced, and speaks of what might be for the Catholic Church (I'm a cradle Catholic) were to be led by someone with the simple humanity of Papa Francesco! Despite the pretty much inevitable denouement, I was still captivated by the story and inspired by the fictional life of this man.

I agree with Bethany here...it's not that great a book
By Jane in Milwaukee
I own hundreds of needlework books on just about every kind using a threaded needle. I love to read of needlework history, especially about samplers, and stitching in England. I don't do needlepoint but have stitched several projects using needlepoint designs. This book, however, does not lend itself to practical use. There are flowery, artistic portraits in the long introduction. Then the author discusses choosing patterns, stitch techniques and offers one alphabet. Then he launches into the 4 seasons with a number of designs each. They are all simple-minded and 2-dimensional. There's such a contrast between the delicately pretty paintings and the inane projects. I can't recommend it.

Beautiful designs and insight into English gardens
By Elise450
I loved this book! I inherited it from my late Aunt who embroidered my whole family's beautiful Christmas stockings, among other things. It details gorgeous designs for traditional English flowers and garden features. The designs and colors can be mixed and matched to your taste. The traditional needle worker was quite skilled and able to create their own designs with interchangeable aspects from different sources. The beautiful cover piece can be created by combining the Little Owl found on pg. 118 and Spring Flowers on pg. 69. I treasure this book and look forward to stitching some elegant decorative pillows for my home.

Oh, Bury Me Not, by M.K. Wren

The war between the McFalls and the Drinkwaters had taken a nasty turn: someone had dynamited a reservoir, depriving the Drinkwaters' Double D ranch of its precious water supply. And Aaron McFall's eldest son George was found dead at the site, apparently killed in the blast. It looked as though George had been the victim of his own plan for wanton destruction, but his old friend Conan Flagg thought otherwise. Sensing mysteries beyond the immediate tragedy, Conan began to search for both families' secrets and found that revenge was but one motive for murder. There were also romantic entanglements to consider, and something frightening and unnamable as well…

"Desperation makes strange alliances."

Most of us hope to never feel the need to hire a private investigator. If you know someone who has worked as a P. I., would you hire someone you know or a stranger? Who would be the best?

George McFalls has made this decision. His family has been feuding with a neighboring family and he wants it to end. With both families living in the ranching areas of Oregon, cattle is dependent on a plentiful water supply as well as a trained staff. No one has the time or the patience for this feud where cattle is poisoned and fences cut.

George contacts his old-time friend and private investigator, Conan Flagg to hopefully stop the feud. The local law enforcement seems disinterested. George even arranges to fly Conan to the ranch.

However, George is killed when the reservoir was dynamited.

Being Conan spent his childhood is the area, he agrees to stay and attempts to stop the feud, hopefully without anyone else dying.

Conan also quickly learns the there are many secrets which complicate the feud. The sons, the McFalls have been in love with the daughters of the other. Already though, one daughter is dead and with George, that is a one-to-one death on both sides. While questioning is some of the siblings actually have any cares for each other, this Romeo and Juliet does seems a little contrived.

Considering the time when this story was written, "Oh, Bury Me Not" is true to the time period of the 1970s without cellphones and with many people smoking cigarettes. That just the way of the 1970s.

I enjoyed the backwoods conversational dialect even if I questioned whether it was authentic for Oregon in the 1970s. The quaintness and "down home" quality created a warmth surrounding the coldness of some of the characters and their actions.

Oh, Bury Me Not is the third book in the Conan Flagg Mystery series by M. K. Wren whose real name is Martha K. Renfroe with Curiosity Didn't Kill the Cat and A Multitude of Sins being the first books in this series. Of the three books, this one is unquestionably my favorite having a well-organized and logical story sequence.

This cozy series of books featuring bookstore owner, private investigator extraordinaire Conan Flagg are quick reads with well-planned stories from a time not so long ago when life was a little simpler.

It is wonderful that Untreed Reads is allowing readers to discover these hidden gems.

Infuriating dialog
By Benedict
Quite some time ago I read most of the Conan Flagg books and enjoyed them, but this one made me angry. I am a native Oregonian and have lived about 2/3 of my life here. I have lived in many parts of the state, and have never heard natives talk like the characters in this book. This book was written in 1976. I was in an Oregon college in 1966 and had a friend in my living group from Burns (the main town in this book.) Neither she nor any of her friends I met talked in this hillybilly slop. I don't think I have ever heard the word "resevoir" pronounced "rezzavoy" at least not by an Oregonian.

One of the characters was the owner and editor of the local newspaper. She was supposedly from Pendleton and I lived there for nearly 15 years. Ms. Wren makes people seem like uneducated, ignorant idiots.

The story was good, but this sloppy, inaccurate language made me so angry it was difficult to enjoy the book.

Ms. Wren was from TX and maybe ranchers down there are ignorant, lazy and sloppy in their speech, but we aren't. She had been in living in OR for about 25 years when she wrote this and should have known better.

Love and Death
By Nash Black
M. K. Wren takes the classic Romeo & Juliet story and sets it rural Oregon in OH, BURY ME NOT.
Private investigator Conan Flagg is asked by an old friend G.W. McFall for aid in quenching the flames of a feud between his father and their neighbors, the Drinkwaters. Before Conan arrives at the ranch C.W. is dead and Mr. Drinkwater's holding pond dam has been dynamited.
Conon is caught as a stranger between two proud old men who've built their spreads through hard work against tremendous odds.
It isn't long before Conan suspects that a third party is manipulating the stubborn ranchers for their own gain.
A fascinating who-done-it, that will keep you turning the pages.
Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS.
