Excellent writing, excellent read

THIS BOOK IS ALSO PUBLISHED UNDER THE TITLE "MY G-STRING MOTHER" My following user review is copied from that listing.

I'm a retired psychologist/psychotherapist and I was VERY impressed by Erik's honesty in reporting his behaviors and feelings. He reported what he thought and felt at the various times through his life with extreme candor and without the slightest attempt (that I saw) to whitewash his own behavior or motivations. Remarkable!!

After recently seeing the movie "Gypsy," I found myself interested in this family's dynamics and wondered how they originated and how they were transmitted through the generations. So I read "American Rose" (1 star, IMO) and "Stripping Gypsy" (5 stars, IMO) and found Gypsy's mother, Momma Rose, was a self-centered, dominating liar, a thief, extreme manipulator, completely lacking empathy, vindictive, and a murderer.

Gypsy is remarkable for the extent she overcame much of her mother's parental influence but she did, of course, pass some of this on to Erik. And Erik (as did his mother) had to wrestle with freeing himself from those negative effects that were passed on to him. I found Gypsy's attempts to do so and Erik's efforts--his failures and successes--in furthering that for himself VERY MUCH something to respect and admire. After all, it's impossible to get out of swamps without getting some mud on your hands and face and in one's skivvies. Erik's book gives another view of a VERY remarkable lady: Gypsy Rose Lee (nee Louise Hovick).

For those interested in seeing these family effects through the generations, I suggest reading "Stripping Gypsy" first, followed by Erik's book, "My G-string Mother" (aka "Gypsy & Me")--possibly followed by Gypsy's semi-fictional memoir, "Gypsy"--but certainly followed by June Havoc's "Early Havoc" and "More Havoc."

Absolutely Fabulous!

Gypsy Rose Lee's autobiography is a favorite of mine.
In fact, I never wanted that book to end. So I was delighted to discover
this biography by her son, Erik Lee Preminger. His behind the scenes tales of growing up with
Gypsy are simply fascinating. This is an incredible glimpse into their lives, told with
sensitivity and wit. I didn't want this book to end, either!

This Book: My Life-preserver

I first read this book 25 years ago when I was entangled in my family of "executive drinkers"- -and found that I was repeatedly dating and working with alcoholics.The theory of the origins of alcoholism may or may not be accurate. What saved my life was reading the scripts. They describe the behavior of the alcoholic, those around her/him, and the inevitable results of denial.I saw myself, my family, my whole lifestyle. I saw the danger that I was in . . . .and I acted.I changed my location, my profession, and recreation preferences.Recalling the scripts in this book have kept me from again becoming entangled with destructive people. I have had a happy and productive life ever since.I can't recommend this book enough.

Cuts to the chase

An AA friend loaned me this book about 20 years ago. It made me aware of all the excuses I made for wanting to drink. I heard all of that mumbo jumbo about Alcoholism being a disease but I never bought into it and I'm glad I didn't because that would be all the excuse I would need to keep drinking until I died.

Steiner's other book, Life Scripts was a life saver also. After reading that book it didn't take me long to realize the script I had been acting out most of my life, that started when I was an infant taking the drug, paregoric, that contains opium and alcohol, that set me up for my addiction later. Even when I was young I was some what intoxicated because I was consuming excessive amounts of sugar, trying to recreate the feeling I got from the paregoric and the human body makes alcohol from sugar and fat. Then I got my first beer when I was 17 and I was off and running. The script was being played out again and I repeated it constantly until I discovered that I was acting out.

Another book not mentioned here is Choices.

I am of the opinion, based on my own personal experiences, that using alcohol in an abusive manner is a learned behavior, not a genetic predisposition. All you have to do is look at all of the advertsing for alcohol, all of the social outlets that include drinking, etc, to see that it is a big part of our social lives. What is a Football or Baseball game without a big cup of beer and a footlong hotdog? I think it is just a social disease, perpetuated by Corporate America!

Sorry I really didn't evaluate the book. Games people play. I think the book gives a fair assessment of games played not just on a personal level but on other levels as I mentioned above about alcoholism being a disease. The consumption of alcohol is perpetuated by television. In AA they say change your playmates and playpens if you plan to stay away from alcohol. This means avoiding commercials on television that promote its use. I found this book most helpful but may tend to make one overly paranoid in social situations if taken to extremes, yet we all have ulterior motives for what we do or want to do, so getting honest and getting to that is where real help and mental health begin.

I had begun this series more than a decade ago, and foolishly allowed the books to go out of print before collecting them all. Elizabeth Boyer is a great spinner of plot and character development, even if the writing does not immediately reach out and snatch away your attention. It was because of her characters and the storyline itself, that I began a search for all of her books, taking the better part of a decade to find them all.
Finally reunited with the Alfar Wizard Thurid, the Scipling Warrior Leifr, and their fight against the original dark elves, I found myself unable to break from reading the entire series again.

Alan Dean Foster writes some brilliant stuff, and this novel is no exception. Before Hoth, there was Tran-Ky-Ky. This book, the first in a series of three, is an excellent story interwoven with strange alien life forms, intrepid space travellers and amazing flora and fauna. And, like all good SF, it is completely believable. So sharpen up ypur chiv, spread your dan and catch nthe wind with Ethan Frome Fortune, Skua September, Hunnar, Milliken Williams and the rest of the crew! Eminently enjoyable!

Bizarre and fun

This is a bizarre book. The cartoonists and writers really put their own spins on Garfield. It feels that they weren't restricted in any sort of way. The drawing style does look outdated though. It's a fun little book.
