About the Author
John Norman, born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1931, is the creator of the Gorean Saga, the longest-running series of adventure novels in science fiction history. Starting in December 1966 with Tarnsman of Gor, the series was put on hold after its twenty-fifth installment, Magicians of Gor, in 1988, when DAW refused to publish its successor, Witness of Gor. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a trade publishing outlet, the series was brought back into print in 2001. Norman has also produced a separate science fiction series, the Telnarian Histories, plus two other fiction works (Ghost Dance and Time Slave), a nonfiction paperback (Imaginative Sex), and a collection of thirty short stories, entitled Norman Invasions. The Totems of Abydos was published in spring 2012.

All of Norman’s work is available both in print and as ebooks. The Internet has proven to be a fertile ground for the imagination of Norman’s ever-growing fan base, and at Gor Chronicles (www.gorchronicles.com), a website specially created for his tremendous fan following, one may read everything there is to know about this unique fictional culture.

Norman is married and has three children.

You either like Norman or you hate him....
By Dennis Martinez
I started reading the Gor series about 40 yrs ago.....book 11 if memory serves. I immediately went out and purchased the previous books and then did what all those that preceded me did, waited for the next volume. My interested faded when he took his sabbatical because of the continued attacks on his subjugation of women themes. I was thrilled to find he had started writing the series again and I now find myself waiting for the next book just like I did low those many years ago. This book is mildly important as it explains a great deal of the questions that will arise as you read deeper into the series. If you can get past the unending subjugation of women BS you'll marvel at his ability to make you see what the characters see as his command of the language is unparalleled.

From Library Journal
When a human child falls into the hands of the little people of Ufgood Reach, aspiring wizard Willow Ufgood embarks on a journey that will carry him and the child to the perilous lands under the rule of an evil sorceress. Willow's Missing Bits Made This Good
By CaptHowdy
I am a big fan of the film and decided I would read the Chris Claremont/George Lucas trilogy that carries on the story recently.
I figured I would start with the novel before the trilogy, Willow (the film's novelization).
I have read some pretty terrible novelizations, and some really great ones. This one I'm giving an average rating. Overall it moves just like the film, although some of the action and most of the comedy that was in the film, is missing in the novel. Madmartigan's humour must have totally relied on Val Kilmer's performance. The other characters are up to par though.
The greatest reason to read this novel as a fan of the movie are the few scenes that must have been cut, or too expensive for the film. One thing that totally shocked me was the entire new character and storyline that was missing from the film! Sorsha's father! In the film you never meet him. In the novel it is great!
It's a short novel that took me a sitting to read. I don't recommend this novel to anyone other than fans of Willow, who will really enjoy the missing bits from the film!

Mostly enjoyed. A couple disappointments.
By Mickie Robarge
Overall I enjoyed the book. I liked seeing the new background to the story. I wonder how much of it was cut from the movie, and how much of it was created by Wayland Drew. The beginning starts out well. There were a few small but nice scenes from the movie that were not in the book. That was a bit disappointing, because there was no need to cut them out. Madmartigan's character seemed to be slightly off, and in my opinion the ending in the book wrapped things up a little too quickly.

Illogical to the core
By Mikael Kuoppala
Here we see three stories tied into one novel, each story more implausible than the other.
The whole story is based on a completely not credible idea and that is even admitted in the end. This is due to the TV series wich, by the way, I have watched.
The physics are completely flawed, and if I've been given accurate information, this episode was one of the ones that made Gene Roddenberry declare the animated series non-canon, wich I wasn't surprised to learn at all.
And although Alan Dean Foster's writing is adequate, it doesn't get near to being good enough to even slightly saving the book. Don't bother to read this.

Very enjoyable book
By Harold Wise
This is one of my all-time favorite Star Trek books. It is a great story based on an episode of the animated series and expanded by Foster into a novel length adventure. Foster understands the characters and writes well. Look for those space battle scenes. I strongly recommend all of the Log series and especially Log 7.

Seven of Ten
By Johnny Heering
Del Rey Books had the rights to adapt the Star Trek animated series into book form. The earliest books in the series adapted three episodes per book. After the sixth book, they realized that there were only four episodes left to adapt. What could they do? They could have switched to two episodes per book and gotten two more books out of the series. But that's not what they did. Instead, they chose to adapt ONE episode per book and get four more books out of the series. So, how do turn a 30 minute TV episode into a 180 page novel. Well, in the case of this particular book, you adapt the TV episode in the first third of the book and then tell a completely unrelated story in the last two-thirds of the book. Or I should say that the new story seems unrelated to the TV story, but the author does manage to tie them together in the last chapter. In the TV part of the story, the crew of the Enterprise ages backwards when the enter the anti-matter universe. In the new material, the Enterprise and a Klingon warship come into conflict over a man who allegedly invented a doomsday weapon. It's enjoyable enough if you're a Star Trek fan.

''The 'Martian novels' are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough…Swashbuckling adventure.'' --Amazon.com editorial review

''When it rains in a Burroughs novel, the reader gets wet.'' --Jack McDevitt, Nebula and Philip K. Dick Award winning author

From the Publisher
The first time I ever went to Tarzana, California, I walked down Ventura Boulevard, noticing that all of the buildings were really ugly. Then I arrive at my destination: a small house, set back from the street, with a beautiful tree shading the entire front yard. Inside, the air was cool and everything was polished wood, especially the incredible, gigantic desk. That's where he worked. It was awesome.

Edgar Rice Burroughs had a huge California ranch, and the land eventually became a town, named for Burroughs's most famous character. Burroughs created one of the few heroes everyone knows, and at that desk, he took Tarzan to exotic lands, had him face bizarre creatures and endless, exotic challenges. Those adventures spirit the reader away to a timeless time of action and heroism. And sitting in that office, I was a permanent convert. For me, and for countless others, the legend will never cease. And that's as it should be.

Excellent End To An Excellent Trilogy
By Justin Newton
Warlord of Mars is very exciting, and in my opinion, a return to form for the Barsoom series after Gods of Mars. I enjoyed GoM but felt it didn't live up to Princess of Mars. Warlord absolutely lives up to and rivals the first novel in terms of my personal enjoyment. This is my first reading of all of these stories. I had originally planned on stopping after the first three, as I heard they make a great trilogy, but the high this story left me with leaves me wanting more, despite a definite end to this particular story. Thuvia, Maid of Mars.... you're next!

By Edward Sanko
The first three books of ERBs John Carter of Mars series makes a perfect sci-fi/fantasy trilogy. Even though written at the beginning of the 20th century, I found quite a bit of story that was far ahead of its time. A great read.

As good as the first two in the series and unlike the 2nd it does not end as a cliffhanger. If you enjoyed the first, or other ERB books, you will like this one as well.

Many obviously not students of WWII history, sadly.
By RRM
I read this book many years ago on a recommendation from a friend. I am a pilot and my grandfather a fighter pilot during World War II. I recall this book being a good read from that perspective.

My two cents are that if you are not a student of World War II American History, you aren't qualified to comment on items in the context of WWII. I for one am, and could type all day and not make many of you aware of the horrors visited on those fighting with or conqured by the Japanese Army of the day. Needless to say you will believe what you want to believe, especially the right-wing revisionists among you. Imagine that history only knows of the horrors (and their scope) as some poor surviving sole was able to disseminate them. Or that history is skewed in favor of the conquerors or revisionists that wrote it. That means that it is very likely that many of the horrors were far worse or just plain covered up. It only takes one, very graphic account, of Japanese soldiers carving babies out of pregnant women's bellies to make you begin to understand what I am talking about, to say nothing of the scum that participated in operations like Unit 731.

Be glad you didn't live then and have endure what many of our grandparents did, and that you benefited from their sacrifice. Who knows how you would have regarded the Japanese or the Germans or Italians had you fought them in World War II. I know veterans today, that abhor the Japanese to this day, and do I judge them for this seemingly racist bent. Hell no! No human should have had to see, hear and feel what they did. Do I begrudge them my admiration or respect? Again, Hell no! I am a veteran myself and if anything can identify with them.

God is My Co-Pilot
By C. A. Luster
I read very few new books these days. I find myself going back and reading those that stood out in my mind mostly. "God Is My Co-Pilot" is one on that list for me to re-read. I read it in High School many years ago and yet it is clear in my mind what the story entailed. A young pilot struggling to survive aeriel battles over China to keep the Japanese from taking over. Robert Scott's book is based on his real life experiences while he was helping the Flying Tigers try to support China in it's fight against the invading Japanese. At times the story is quite tense. The book's title is based on one harrowing flight that Scott barely survived. It strengthened his faith and prompted him to recount his story. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially those that enjoy good war stories. If you enjoyed this read "Defiance: The Bielski Partisans".

The Zimmermann Telegram, by Barbara W. Tuchman

The Proud Tower, the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Guns of August, and The Zimmermann Telegram comprise Barbara W. Tuchman’s classic histories of the First World War era

In January 1917, the war in Europe was, at best, a tragic standoff. Britain knew that all was lost unless the United States joined the war, but President Wilson was unshakable in his neutrality. At just this moment, a crack team of British decoders in a quiet office known as Room 40 intercepted a document that would change history. The Zimmermann telegram was a top-secret message to the president of Mexico, inviting him to join Germany and Japan in an invasion of the United States. How Britain managed to inform the American government without revealing that the German codes had been broken makes for an incredible story of espionage and intrigue as only Barbara W. Tuchman could tell it.

Praise for The Zimmermann Telegram

From the Publisher
The average person thinks that it was the sinking of the Lusitania that brought the United States into World War I. Not so! In this slim volume that reads like a whodunnit, Barbara Tuchman reveals the little known secret of The Zimmerman Telegram. Basically, Germany wanted to keep the U.S. and its industrial might out of the European conflict by convincing Mexico and Japan to attack the U.S. Germany even promised Mexico it would get back Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona! What the Germans didn't know is that as soon as war was declared, the first thing the British did was cut Germany's transatlantic cable. All telegrams or telephone calls to North America had to travel over Britain's cable. And the British intercepted every telegram out of Germany. Even though the Zimmerman telegram was sent in code, it was broken. But the shrewd British held onto it, not revealing its contents until it was absolutely necessary, and in such a way that they didn't have to reveal that they were intercepting German messages! Brilliant! When the New York Times published the telegram in 1917, it was but a short time until pacifist Woodrow Wilson got a declaration of war from Congress, and the U.S. began sending troops "over there." A great read!

Excellent history of sadly forgotten episode
By Amazon Customer
While the Zimmerman Telegram is one of the most important documents in history, and is perhaps the greatest result of code breaking in history, it is nonetheless frequently overlooked. Most people have at least heard "Remember the Lusitania" which had essentially nothing to do with the U.S. entering WWI. Few, however, are familiar with this short telegram that is truly a hinge on which history turned.

One cannot blame Barbara Tuchman for this, however, as this work brings alive the intrigue of the time like no other. Reading like a spy novel, and yet all the more chilling because it's true, Tuchman navigates the reader through the murky waters of WWI intrigue. We learn how, in a misguided effort to distract the U.S. from Europe, Germany sought to foment trouble on the U.S./Mexican border. We learn how the British scrambled to inform the Americans of this, without comprimising their sources. And we learn how a tortured President Wilson was forced to take the steps towards war.

"The Zimmerman Telegram" is history as it should be written; loaded with primary sources, and with the breathless pace that events really unfolded. While better known for "The Guns of August", it is this work that makes me rank Barabara Tuchman as one of the best historians of the 20th Century.

Classic Story of Intrigue
By John D. Cofield
This is one of my favorite Barbara Tuchman works. It is the story of the Zimmermann Telegram, a message sent by the German Foreign Minister to the Mexican Government in early 1917. In essence the Telegram was an attempt to make Mexico a German ally in the event of the US entering World War I on the Allied side, with the bait being the possibility of Mexico reclaiming the states of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. When British Intelligence intercepted and decoded the Telegram they made certain that the US government and public heard about it quickly in the hopes of bringing the US into the war.
The book is more than just the story of the Telegram itself. It includes a run through of the various German espionage efforts in the US before and during World War I and a good description of the unease felt by the US at the mysterious German machinations, including possibly collusion with Japan and an attempt to take control of the Panama Canal.
Like all of Tuchman's works, The Zimmermann Telegram is scholarly without being dull, and a real delight.

Insightful events leading to American involvement in WWI.
By A Customer
The story that Barbara Tuchman tells in The Zimmermann Telegram is one of international diplomacy in the period just before World War One. Tuchman centers her story on the apex of a single article of communication (the telegram) and expands from there. The story begins in the North Sea just before the British declaration of war on Germany. The British cable ship Telconia dredges the sea searching for five cables at the bottom connecting Germany's communication with the of the European and North American continents. All five cables are cut. Furthermore, Britain coaxed Eastern Telegraph, the American owner of the only other cable to North America (running from North Africa to Brazil), to pull the cables that would allow German communication with the world. Germany was now bound to wireless communication for the duration of the war. This is significant because it allowed the British to secretly intercept all German communications, and begin to decode them in the British Naval Intelligence office referred to as "Room 40". Inside Room 40, Britain learned to crack the German code. This is how the British, and consequently the Americans, were able to learn about the Zimmermann Telegram. The Telegram put the British in a precarious position. They desperately needed the United States to become a belligerent and enter the war against Germany if Britain hoped to win the war. At the same time if the British gave the Americans the Telegram and it was released, the Germans might deduce the existence of Room 40 and discover that their code had been unraveled, thereby compromising all British ability to "listen in" on the Germans for the rest of the war. Additionally, the Telegram was no guarantee that the United States would declare war against Germany or that the Americans would even believe the authenticity of the Telegram. It is the analysis of U.S., German, and British players and the revelation of how The Zimmermann Telegram was eventually delivered to the U.S. Government (without compromising Room 40, and at the same time successfully brought the U.S. into war against Germany) that Tuchman wrote about. Tuchman's style was objective in construction by use of factual evidence from many sources. She wrote the book fairly, comparing both the British and German sides. She illustrated that there were supporters on both sides in the United States. Through all of the descriptions she portrayed Woodrow Wilson as neutral until the end, and discussed the external forces on Wilson that tried to persuade him in all directions. Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and former President Theodore Roosevelt supported the side of Britain and war; Robert LaFollette and other isolationist senators on the side of non-intervention. Tuchman centered all events on the final outcome-would the Americans be persuaded to believe the authenticity of the Zimmermann Telegram? Would they declare war on Germany because of it? Tuchman was persuasive in her argument that it was ultimately the Zimmermann Telegram that caused Wilson to ask Congress for belligerency. Her sources were mostly first-hand accounts taken from the journals and diaries of major participants in the events that surrounded the Zimmermann Telegram. Important to her research were notes supplied by British Admiral Hall's (Director of British Naval Intelligence) private secretary, as well as personal papers of Joseph Grew (U.S. Ambassador) and those papers of Ambassador Walter Hines Page. Further research by Tuchman was accredited to help from the Foreign Office Archives Office in London and the historical manuscripts of both President Wilson and Secretary of State Lansing. Because The Zimmermann Telegram was well researched and convincing in its points, Tuchman revealed to the reader a deeper level of understanding surrounding the events that led up to the American declaration of war against Germany. Tuchman shrugged off the commonly held elementary notions that it was the sinking of the Lusitania, or the declaration of German unrestricted submarine warfare that caused the U.S. to declare its belligerency. She argued that while these events were certainly considerations in the decision for war, they were not enough to cause the U.S. to break its policy of neutrality. She was successful in persuading the reader that it was the secret German proposal of a pact with Mexico and Japan that became the proverbial straw. Tuchman's thesis that the Zimmermann Telegram was the single most important reason that America declared war against Germany was a believable one. It clearly showed evidence for the German government's theory that a secret pact with Mexico and Japan would be her only chance of defeating The United States in a war. Tuchman pointed out that Germany made only two significant blunders that forced America into the war declaration. First, Germany's mistaken ignorance that German intelligence was so superior to that of the Allies that the Allies could have never cracked the German code. Secondly, Zimmermann's puzzling admission of the authenticity of the telegram when much of the American public and Congress believed it to be a British hoax (Britain could not reveal the authenticity without compromising Room 40). In conclusion, Tuchman gave an exciting dimension of suspense to the events surrounding America's entry into World War One by revealing first person accounts and minor personalities that played a role in the events leading to this crux. She made the valid argument that it was the Zimmermann Telegram that ultimately brought Wilson and the American Congress (and people) to this decision after a long period of neutrality toward Germany.

It was impossible, Joanna knew. When she betrayed her lover Antryg Windrose to the Council, he had been sentenced to death. Then she had believed his brain was possessed by the Dark Mage Suraklin, though now she knew that Suraklin had chosen Gary Fairchild. But guilty or innocent, Antryg was separated from her by the awesome Void between the worlds, far from any hope of rescue.

Nevertheless, she had to save him. Suraklin was planning to gain immortality by placing his mind in a computer that would get its power by draining the life-force from all on both worlds, dooming everyone to eternal misery and hopelessness. And only Antryg was strong enough a wizard to challenge the Dark Mage.

Once again, Joanna dared the fearsome tunnel through the Void, praying desperately that Antryg still lived and that she could find help to free him. If not...But she refused to think of that.

You wish you could invide them over for lunch!

OK. You pick up a book.
You open it.
The first sentence is:
"The worst thing about knowing Gary was dead was seeing him every day at work."
You want to know a little bit more, don't ya?
Of course you have to read the Silent Tower first, but you won't be bored.
Barbara Hambly is an excellent writer; she creates these Technicolor characters. They're priceless, detailed, 3-D and believable; I'd love to invite them over for lunch. (Especially Antryg; he's a corker. I can just see him waving his fork and expounding on turtle shells and Unreal Tournament and the Punic Wars and pretty much everything. I'd listen until my ears fell off.)
In general, this is an exciting espionage-ish book; they're wrecked, lost, captured, escaped, imprisoned, etcetera--you certainly won't be bored. It's a complex, highly plotted book, with lots of twists and surprises. She creates some very Lovecraftian monsters as well, so you can get some exercize by letting your flesh crawl. And you *have* to meet NineTenTwo, who looks like an H.R. Giger Alien but talks like a cardigan-wearing physics prof.

Stunning.
By A Customer
The sequel to The Silent Tower is extremely powerful, filled with emotions--fear, love, hate. This is the best book of Barbara Hambly's that I have read yet. Conflicts bring the characters to life. Suraklin himself is one of the most interesting characters, in his desire to live forever--and his forgetting why. Joanna takes it on herself to rescue Antryg, knowing that failure could mean the death of not only his universe, but all universes. Tension keeps suspense and anticipation high. Incredible writing. As a certified bookworm, I give this book five stars.

Amazing
By Sehlat
This was the most amazing book I have read in ages - honestly. Hambly surpasses herself. A real tear-jerker. I ended up crying about 5 times in just the last few chapters. It absolutely screwed with my emotions, which is just how a like it, and a sure way to prove that I was living the book rather than reading it!
Read this book! Everyone! And enjoy it - I insist!

A definite must-read
By Britt
As my bookshelves continue to grow, I can name only a handful of books that I continue revisit time and time again. Duncan's Magic Casement series. Feist's Riftwar. Moon's Saga of Paksenarrion. And above all, Hardy's Master of the Five Magics.
Hardy's spellbinding tale of Alodar's quest through the five paths of magic, and the climactic culmination of his talents at the end, is a thrilling adventure no matter how many times you've read it. Hardy's detailed explanations of the tenets of each of the magical paths are some of the most logical I've ever encountered in this genre.
The only negative thing I can say about this book is that the romantic scenes read like a daytime soap opera, and not a particularly good one at that. Fortunately they only last a page or two, and then our hero is back on his quest.
Master of the Five Magics is simple to read, complex in scope, and thorougly compelling to the last page. Get it if you can find it; you'll probably never sell it.

Great Book
By grooveman
I read this book years ago, but It is still one of my favorites.

It is a great fantasy novel for someone with an analytical mind and a penchant for subtlety. A good book for imaginative intellectuals (as opposed to entertainment-seekers or cyincal intellectuals who like to find fault in everything not of the mundane).

Hardy is a good writer who has an excellent grasp of human nature and a natural bent for keeping complex theoritical constructs internally consistent. His story is imaginative and fantastic, and yet at the same time not an affront to one's "common sense". The story line moves along at a nice pace with a few nice twists and turns.

This whole series is well worth a read or two. I can't say enough good things about this book.

One of the greatest fantasy novels from the 1980's
By Judah
I grew up reading fantasy and science fiction, and one of the greatest regrets I have is that I never found more than three books written by Lyndon Hardy, an author I still consider an automatic buy. In a way, this man's work defined what I expect from fantasy.

Of his three published works, I liked 'Master of the Five Magics' the best, followed closely with 'Secret of the Sixth Magic'. 'Riddle of the Seven Realms' comes in third, but keep in mind it's been over 20 years since I purchased the books, and I've moved six times and had to parse my book collection. I still have these wonderful novels, which I've re-read about once every five years.

Now about the book -- it follows Alodar, an apprentice Thaumaturgist. The magic system used by Lyndon Hardy is unique and self-consistent, hitting the right balance of rules vs power to make fantasy magic truly interesting. The closest modern equivlents I can think of are David Farland's Runelords or even Robert Jordan's One Power.

Alodar's journey takes him into enclaves of each magic practitioner across the land, and he meets adversaries that constantly beat him down. Yet he doesn't give up! I could really feel for Alodar by the end of the novel, so the primary characterization is wonderful.

The plotting was strong, and kept me with the book until the end. I never expected some of the twists thrown at me by Hardy.

As for the settings, I can still conjure up the inner heart of the Volcano with uncut gems waiting like burning fruit, the wizard's library with the spell barrier gongs, and the imposing black tower surrounded by minor demons. Those images have stayed with me for years, and have become benchmarks I measure new fantasy by. Lyndon Hardy hit the right mix of dialogue, pacing, and description I find lacking in so many 'modern' fantasy efforts.

If you haven't read this wonderful novel, I urge you to try it.

Fall from Grace: Sex, Scandal and Corruption in American Politics from 1702 to Present, by Shelley Ross

Washington scandal is more than accidental -- it's an American tradition!
Political misdeeds are older than the republic. Throughout history an aggressive news media has consistently exposed irregularities and illegalities on all sides -- helping to shape our perceptions about politics and politicians.
This fact-filled book names the names and sets the scenes -- from almost every presidential administration -- letting loose history's best-kept secrets and most infamous scandals, such as:
"The Governor in Skirts" -- In 1702, Lord Cornbury, New York's drunken, cross-dressing Colonial governor-general, insisted on wearing formal hooped skirts and lady's accessories in public as a tribute to the fashionable Queen Anne.
"The Overzealous Colonel" -- Oliver North's predecessor in clandestine paramilitary activities was William S. Smith, in Thomas Jefferson's administration. Intent on aiding Venezuelan freedom fighters in their battle against Spanish occupation, he raised private funds, secured weapons, and enlisted soldiers of fortune for his private army.
Drawing comparisons between malfeasance in times gone by and today's simmering scandals, Fall From Grace demonstrates how our intriguing if imperfect system manages to stay afloat -- almost despite itself -- and exposes the all-too-fallible men and women who take the front page by storm.

Sex Scandals Of The White House
By kgreen@u.washington.edu
My grandmother has a copy of this book. I am desperately seeking a copy for my self.
Candid retrospect of the sex scandals in the White House, including J.Edgar Hoover, from Washington to Carter.
I highly recommend this book for several pages you can;t get through without laughing out loud. Makes you wonder if we, as taxpayers are funding/ supporting a government or private "stable."
If anybody knows of a copy, please contact me.

What They Didn't Teach You in School
By Acute Observer
This is the history book that is likely banned from school libraries since it has the stories censored from or obliquely mentioned in Official History. Some of the stories will be news to the reader. The 'Introduction' notes that "some of our most moral leaders have been our weakest, while some with the most scandalous behavior have served the country the best". [What did Machiavelli say?] The press ignored most scandals of the 20th century before Watergate (p.xix). Some political scandals were omitted from this book. This 1988 book needs extra chapters on recent events. Journalist Ross believes sex, scandal, and corruption will always be part of the political system. Ross does not provide any background on the groups behind the politicians, like bankers, big landowners, a secret society, etc.

Chapter 1 tells of Colonial America. Lord Cornbury's misrule led to the idea of impeachment of a ruler. Ben Franklin had his secrets. George Washington corresponded with a married woman (Chapter 2). He married a wealthy widow (p.15). Alexander Hamilton's cousin embezzled Treasury funds, tried to corner the market on government bonds, and created the first financial panic (Chapter 3). Congress condemned Hamilton (p.22). Hamilton had an affair with Mrs. Reynolds and paid her husband for it (p.23). The scandals about Thomas Jefferson originated from a single source (p.29). Chapter 4 has the stories. Chapter 5 lists the scandals of the Adams family. There were scandals for Andrew Jackson over his wife, and then the wife of the Secretary of War (Chapter 6). There were no personal scandals for Martin Van Buren (Chapter 7). His Vice-President, a War Hero, was unmarried with children (p.68). John Tyler was nearly impeached for his use of government money for secret purposes ("executive privilege").

The 1850s were marked by violence, corruption, and decadence (Chapter 8). James Buchanan promised government contracts for campaign contributors. Bids were rigged (p.84). Buchanan's corruption led to the election of "Honest Abe" (p.91). Lincoln's Presidential scandals were mostly caused by his wife (p.92). President Grant was "personally incorruptible", unlike his friends and relatives (Chapter 10). Grant's reign was notorious for scandals. Rutherford B. Hayes was the cleanest candidate (Chapter 11). James Garfield put strains on his marriage. Grover Cleveland was an honest politician when government was considered a tool of business (p.120). James Blaine made money from nearly every railroad organized during his terms as Congressman. Chapter 12 tells of the election of 1884. Cleveland's cancer surgery during the Depression of 1893 was kept secret (p.129). Chapter 13 lists a few sexual scandals of politicians in the Gilded Age.

The love scandals of Woodrow Wilson are in Chapter 14. Warren Harding's scandals were revealed after his death (Chapter 15). FDR and Eleanor had no public scandals; their private life was "bizarre" (p.169). Chapter 16 has the secrets revealed in 1978. Chapter 17 has the scandals of the Truman administration (influence peddling). Eisenhower said "a gift is not necessarily a bribe" (p.186). Kay Summersby wrote her story (p.189). JFK's romances are in Chapter 18; they were mostly censored until Nixon's first term. Were the Kennedy's reckless (p.203)? LBJ had almost as many romantic scandals as JFK (Chapter 19). Chapter 20 tells about J. Edgar Hoover. Nixon was the only President to resign from office. What was Nixon's friendship with a cocktail-lounge hostess (Chapter 21)? Did J. Edgar Hoover use this scandal to stay in office (p.224)? Gerald Ford set a higher standard, the scandals were in Congress or the CIA (Chapter 22). Jimmy Carter was a moral man, the scandals came from his brother Billy, Budget Director Lance, and Congressmen (Chapter 23). The sheer number of scandals in the Reagan administration is unprecedented (p.269). Their political appointees were businessmen on the make (Chapter 24). Chapter 25 discusses the scandals of the 1988 presidential campaign.

Arguably the best TV reference work ever!
By Tom
The information contained in this book is astounding. I can't tell you how many times I have consulted this book whenever we see an actor on a TV show and wonder, "Where have we seen him/her before?" Rarely has that question not been answered in the pages of this book. I've bought the last four editions, and have a "hand-me-down chain" well established: my sister gets the second-most-recent edition, and she passes the previous one onto her son-in-law.
Inaccuracies? With the volume of television information out there, there are bound to be small mistakes here and there. The authors encourage readers to submit corrections to the book, and I myself have done so. (In fact, my name appears in the acknowledgments page of this edition as having contributed a correction.)
Out-of-date information? This book is only updated once every three to four years (to update it more often would be cost-prohibitive), and the last revision was in 1999. The publication information on the Amazon.com item page clearly says this, and the book's introduction also gives the "official" cut-off date for updated information. The next edition should be just around the corner.
My library would not be complete without this book, and I will, without hesitation, be buying the next edition as soon as it hits the shelves.

The Single Best TV Reference Work Today and Tomorrow
By Lawrance Bernabo
Brooks and Marsh have compiled what is far and away the best reference book for prime time television. Each entry includes the genre, the dates of first and last broadcast, the broadcast history of the show as to times and days of the week, and the cast members (hosts or regulars for reality programming). Then there is a description of the program, the length of which depends on how long that particular program aired. Clearly, the basics are covered in this compilation. My guess is that sooner or later they are going to have to come out with a CD-Rom edition or they are going to have to do two volumes.
The other strengths of this volume are the introductory essay "A Short History of Network Television" and the Appendixes which provide Prime Time Schedules, Emmy Award Winners, Top-Rated Programs by Season, Longest-Running Series, The Top 100 Series of All Time, Prime Time Series Reunion Telecasts, Series Airing in Prime Time on More Than One Network, Prime Time Spinoffs, Prime Time Series Based on Movies, Prime Time Network TV Series that Also Aired on Network Radio, and Hit Theme Songs from Series. The Index of Personalities and Performers allows you to track your favorites from series to series throughout the history of the tube.
In regards to their introductory examination of the trends in programming that have created specific eras in prime time, I would argue that Brooks and Marsh jumped the gun a little bit on characterizing the 1990s as the Ear of Choice. Certainly that is where we are now, but for the first part of that decade I think that network programming was dominated by female oriented programs. The Nielsen Top 10 included "Roseanne," "Murphy Brown," "The Golden Girls," "Designing Women," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Grace Under Fire" at some point during that period. Even shows will male stars-such as "Home Improvement" and "Coach"-presented ironic portraits of the traditional macho male. By presenting traditional males in explicit comic and inherently negative ways, even these shows work into the feminist perspective. Clearly women as the dominate audience for television were being courted by such shows and I think that constitutes a distinct era for Brooks and Marsh to include.
Note: If you are looking for a book that covers daytime programming, then Alex O'Neill's "Total Television" is where you want to start.

The real TV Guide
By David R. Cox
I've owned every edition of this book and it just keeps getting better and better. Now they even include all the 'minor' networks (A&E, Nickelodeon, BET, ...) and some of those networks' first run shows. Every prime-time show through the 1998 season is covered with cast lists and air dates. The appendices have expanded the yearly ratings to include the Top 30 shows. About the only thing missing would be highest and lowest rated episode of each show, and that might be asking for too much.
