THE GREATEST FANTASY EPIC OF OUR TIME

The dark, fearsome Ringwraiths are searching for a Hobbit. Frodo Baggins knows that they are seeking him and the Ring he bears—the Ring of Power that will enable evil Sauron to destroy all that is good in Middle-earth. Now it is up to Frodo and his faithful servant, Sam, with a small band of companions, to carry the Ring to the one place it can be destroyed: Mount Doom, in the very center of Sauron’s realm.

Thus begins J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

From the Inside Flap
Frodo Baggins knew the Ringwraiths were searching for him--and the Ring of Power he bore that would enable Sauran to destroy all that was good in Middle-earth. Now it was up to Frodo and his faithful servant Sam to carry the Ring to where it could be detroyed--in the very center of Sauron's dark kingdom.

From AudioFile
During his eleventy-[first] birthday celebration (hobbits have their own way of counting), Bilbo Baggins reluctantly agrees to give up the powerful but corrupt Ring of Power he found years before in The Hobbit. But getting rid of the ring turns out to be no easy task. In this first installment of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Inglis's skilled narration manages to retain the old-fashioned, fairy tale quality of the original text but is also well in tune with the story's darker aspects. As Bilbo's nephew, Frodo, and his friends take center stage to help dispose of the ring before some truly unsavory characters can obtain it, Inglis demonstrates he is up to the task of relating the original story's drama, suspense, and dark mysticism. Really, the best way to read The Hobbit
By Mark Pollock
Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

The Hobbit Jemima Catlin
By Cory W. Yates
I just wanted to take the time to update anyone who is interested in purchasing this illustrated edition of The Hobbit. As you probably know, there aren't many illustrated editions of the hobbit and most that are illustrated aren't all that incredible. So far, my favorite edition has been the one by Alan Lee. I must say, it's hard to top his work. Alan Lee really helped bring the story to life for me when I first read this incredible adventure by Tolkien. However, because I believe that The Hobbit is a tale directed at the hearts of children and adults that are young at heart, I believe that Jemima Catlin's illustrated edition has topped even the great Alan Lee's. First off, the quality of this book is excellent. The book has been wrapped in cloth so the book feels high quality and soft to the touch. Also, the cover has a beautiful illustration from the book that includes carefully placed gold etching on the leaves, title, and author's name. This really gives the book a nice luster and shine. The book doesn't come with a book jacket and honestly I think that was smart based off of how high quality the book feels and looks. It just doesn't need a cheap paper jacket to cover such a beautiful looking book.

The illustrations that are presented in the book are a thing of beauty. Not only are there a great many (every two or three pages or so) but they are incredibly colorful and really pop when you look at them. I do think the illustrator's style is to appear more colorful and simple at first glance, but at the same time you will look at the illustrations carefully and see the amount of time and effort that she put into this work. I love this style of simplicity and use of color. Though not the exact same style, I feel like it reminds me of illustrators like William Steig who just have this incredible knack for bringing out amazing details with small illustrations. In fact, I truly and desperately hope that Jemima Catlin will be commissioned for Lord of the Rings. If you happen to read this Jemima, I just wanted to say thanks for putting so much passion and hard work into this book. I look forward to reading this to my children someday and plan on using your version when I do! As a side note, I should mention that some of Tolkien's original maps are included in the front and back of the book.

Lastly, it wouldn't be an appropriate review of The Hobbit without mentioning how amazing this story really is. If there is any part of you that believes in things like magic, risk-taking, adventure, friendship to the end, finding faith in the smallest of people or things, and good triumphing over evil, this is the book for you. I fell in love with the characters of this story and am thankful for authors like J.R.R Tolkien for having that God-given ability to captivate readers through these characters and the adventures they set out on. Every time I read this book I feel like I'm a kid again and that in itself is a great thing in my eyes. However, as an adult this book not only brings about those childhood feelings, but also strengthens my personal faith, and leads me to believe that those who truly live life to the fullest are those who go against the flow, take risks despite the fears or consequences when they know that it's in the name of doing what they feel is right inside of there hearts. I think there really is some of Bilbo Baggins in all of us and we learn a great deal from his adventure.

If you cannot tell, I love this book. It is saying a lot for me that this is my favorite edition of the book so far. This truly is a high-quality, gift edition that you will be very proud to own. Don't hesitate to purchase! Thank you J.R.R Tolkien and Jemima Catlin!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR
By CJ
I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

From the Publisher
Like many people, I go way, way back with Heinlein. My very favorite book (and one that stands out in my mind--and with much affection--to this day) is Tunnel in the Sky. I really, really wanted to go off to explore new worlds with a covered wagon and horses, like the hero does at the very end of the book. But one of the nice things about Robert Heinlein is that he's got something for everyone. One of my best friends has a different favorite: Podkayne of Mars. Go figure.

Discovering What Endures
By James D. DeWitt
Back in 1942 Heinlein wrote an amazing short story, "The Unleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag." It was an astonishing story for its time and genre. It was out of print for a number of years, but is now available in "The Fantasies of Robert Heinlein." I mention "Jonathan Hoag" because as he often did in the last decades of his life, Heinlein returned to some of the themes of earlier books. He returned to some of the ideas of "Jonathan Hoag" in this remarkable book, "Job."
Read at one level, this novel is a updated biblical Book of Job. The main character is put through the wringer because of a wager made by his Creator. Read at another level, it is the story of transformation: religious bigot and all-around prig Alex Hergensheimer is transformed into a much better person, even if that may not have been anyone's intent. But at another, deeper level, Heinlein illustrates what is really important, what really matters, what really endures. Because Alex discovers, over the course of the story, what real love can be, and how real love is the most important thing in the universe. More important than the dubious Heaven he finds when, about to lose his wager, the Creator pulls the Last Trump and Alex ascends to sainthood and Heaven, without his true love. He abandons Heaven and harrows Hell to find her. Heinlein couldn't have put it much more plainly.
My favorite scene: when, risen into Heaven as a Saint, Alex asks Heaven's help in finding his wife. And Heaven produces his wife. His first wife. From before he found real love. She's a harridan, and the transformed Alex is appalled. Even the angels are embarrassed for Alex.
The denouement hearkens back to the denouement of "Jonathan Hoag." For me, it works, but I can sympathize with those who find the ending, quite literally, too deus machina.
Like "Jonathan Hoag," you are never sure where this story is going to end, and I won't spoil it for you here. Except to say that the implied limits on human understanding are bittersweet. We can find true love, Heinlein seems to be saying, and we can live lives filled with love, but we cannot really understand the universe.
This is Heinlein at his best. No pontificating all-knowing protagonists, very little of the political polemics that started with "Stranger." Just an excellent story that invites deeper thought. Highly recommended.

A Lesson in Values
By Jim Hammond
Something new and unpredictable happens on every page.
The most faithful Christian on earth turns out to be the most open minded - to the chagrin of higher powers who put him to the test. He is naïve, but resourceful. He is average, but honest. He is dogmatic, but flexible, because his most fundamental value is love - not his image.
You will also find out how the Bible and science could both be right, and although I don't think Heinlein believed this for a second, it does make a thought provoking story.
If you are looking for a good novel with a libertarian bent, then read this, or pretty much anything else by Heinlein for that matter. I especially recommend, "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".

A Redundant Collection
By Rachel Simmons
This is a completely dispensable work. It is "Christian Reflections", with "On Church Music" left out. To be sure, "On Church Music" isn't much of a work, but it hardly seems worthwhile to put out a new collection with no other purpose than to omit it.
So what should you get instead?
If you are interested in Lewis's shorter works, my best advice is to get "Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces", which, as of the time of this writing, is available from Amazon UK but not Amazon US. That collection consists of about 130 short works by Lewis. The works in that collection are mostly, but not exclusively, Christian.
If your interest is restricted to Lewis' works on Christianity, and your budget or enthusiasm does not run to "Essay Collection and Other Short Pieces", then my second-best advice is to get any or all of the following (they don't overlap significantly, and between them they include most of Lewis's shorter Christian writings):
"God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics"*
"The World's Last Night and Other Essays"
"Christian Reflections"
"The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses"
* Be careful - there is a UK Fontana paperback lurking about called "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology" that is substantially shorter than the "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics" collection. A full version of "God in the Dock - Essays on Theology and Ethics" was published in the UK under the title "Undeceptions - Essays on Theology and Ethics".

Lots of great stuff.
By David Marshall
While this collection may be much the same as God in the Dock, as the reviewer below says (several essays seemed fresh to me), it has been out for almost 40 years. Since the publishers have probably retired, and the statute of limitations on greed has run out by now, I'll review the book on its own merits. (If it's novelty you're looking for, try the brilliant, humorous, and sometimes quirky Lewis letters collections that Harper San Francisco printed last year. Practically no one seems to have read them, and they delighted me for a month or two.)

Seeing Eye is not a New Age revision of C. S. Lewis, as the title might make you think, but a motley collection of thirteen mostly thoughtful, deep, and iconoclastic essays. Some sound as if they began as a school assignment -- "Can we have something on ethics or Christianity and culture?" and then Lewis attacks the assigned topic with his usual clarity of thought and erudition, usually taking it, and us, somewhere unexpected and deeply revealing. "The Funeral of Great Myth" gives a (possibly premature) encomium, with measured appreciation and skepticism, on the myth of evolution (in the trans-scientific sense) that dominated late 19th and 20th Century thought. "Historicism" is a highly useful analysis of the meaning of history, or whether history has a meaning. Lewis' essay on the Psalms is included; though I think it better read with his book on the subject. (Lewis was not a fideist, and gives the Psalms what some might feel is rough treatment.) The essay "Petitionary prayer: a problem without an answer" considers two types of request to God in Scripture: those that add "your will be done," and those that do not. Lewis considers whether our timidity in prayer derives from true humility, or lack of faith, and whether the Bible promises more than God delivers from prayer, and decides (with commendable honesty) that he doesn't know. Lewis also writes "on futility," on Christianity and culture (another foundational piece of thinking), subjectivism (an early defense of what he calls the "tao" in his prophetic Abolition of Man), and religious language (scattering insight and understanding like my yellow lab scatters river water after a swim).

"Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism," elsewhere called "Elephants and Fernseed," in which Lewis attacks skeptical New Testament scholarship, may be the most brilliant and (for some) helpful piece of all. If you haven't read it, this essay alone is worth the price of several heftier volumes. As I show in my new book, Why the Jesus Seminar can't find Jesus, and Grandma Marshall Could, modern critics continue to repeat the errors Lewis describes. His essay therefore continues to be not merely useful, but indespensible, if you find yourself bamboozled by the likes of John Crossan, Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, or Bishop Spong. (Though of course I also recommend my own book.)

If you haven't read these essays and feed deeply on the truth herein, and this is a convenient edition for you, be sure to acquire a copy.

Thoughtful and intelligent
By Christopher Morris
This collection C.S. Lewis' essays contain many deep thoughts on some very specific subjects. In this collection, essays spend time comparing Christianity and Culture, Christianity and Literature, and many more of the less than fundamental aspects of Christianity. He proves his depth of knowledge in the works by citing numerous references in each essay. This book was not intended for the pleasure reader. The content is very specific and Lewis refers to a plethora of people and works that may be unknown to many people.

One of the best books I've read
By Bjz
I rarely write book reviews, but this deserves one. This book is based on a true story. The author painted the story vividly, giving you a real feel for what she went through, which is astonishing, to say the least. It may be a little rough for some, as life could be brutal in those times and the author did not sugarcoat anything. (There are no explicit sex scenes- I wish more people would address this in their book reviews.) I've read the book more than once, it is a keeper, and I am sure I will read it again. If you like adventure stories, you won't want to pass this one up. The book is very skillfully written, not the least bit amateurish, which allows you to completely stay in the story when you're reading it, no distractions.

I USUALLY DON'T LIKE HISTORY BOOKS, BUT....
By A Customer
I usually don't like history books, they bore me to death. My sister suggested this book to me, and at first I didn't think anything of it. She's a book worm, and I'm not, so I thought I wouldn't be interested. Once I read the first page, I couldn't put it down! Thom caught my attention and held it throughout the whole book! He has very vivid details that make me feel like I am with the character, suffering with them, fearing with them, and crying with them. After I read this book, I read all of Thom's books. And every time I would hear about one of the characters in History class, it amazed me at how much I thought I knew the character personally! Thom also caught my attention because he writes about Native Americans in a respectful way, and I LOVE Native Americans!!!! They are sooo interesting to me!! I want to learn how to speak one of the languages sometime. I loved how Thom made them sound like humans because I hate it when books talk about all the bad things that Native Americans did, and not all of the amazing things they did! He also uses a lot of their words, and made you learn the language along with the character. Thom is amazing to me. He can make you feel the pain that the characters are going through! Even though it would be discusting to read and imagine, Thom wants you to know how serious it was in real life, and how real this is! It's reality! --not just a fairy tale. Thom tells about REAL thoughts that people have. Usually books tell the characters thoughts, but they don't go into detail, they don't tell everything that people REALLY think. I would LOVE to talk to ANYONE about this book, whether or not you liked it. PLEASE E-MAIL ME and chat!!! (about ANY of Thom's books!!) :o)

My favorite genre of books are fiction based on fact and this book is just that. Very well researched, very well told - I loved it so much I went and purchased more by the same author for my Kindle. I highly recommend this book - much more complete a story than the movie.

A startling, believable scenario that might have been.
By Roger J. Buffington
SS-GB deals with life in Nazi-occupied Great Britain, about one year after the German Army successfully overruns the British Isles. I found it to be utterly believable, completely convincing. Churchill has been secretly executed by a German firing squad, and the King is imprisoned in the Tower of London under special SS guard. America considers the war to be over. And therein lies the tale. The end will rock you and sock you.
The book deals with one Detective Archer, a detective with Scotland Yard, which is itself under the command of a German police General. There is a murder to be solved, and as one might guess, there is more to the murder than meets the eye. Archer must solve the murder and deal with the political rivalries that affect his German masters.
Deighton's novel captures the sense of defeat--the dark, moody time (which in real life was only just barely averted) after the all hope is lost and the British have suffered utter defeat. But life goes on, and this is what SS-GB is really about. There is a story here, about seemingly real people, and Deighton tells it. This is a book that I have made a permanent part of my library, and I re-read it every couple of years. It is that kind of book.

Brilliant "alternative history" thriller - vintage Deighton
By T. D. Welsh
It's November 1941 in Nazi-occupied Britain, and Detective Inspector Archer of Scotland Yard finds himself reporting to SS Gruppenfuehrer Fritz Kellermann. The King is a prisoner in the Tower of London; Churchill has been shot after a brief trial in Berlin; Germany and the USSR are still the best of friends; and the USA is reluctant to intervene. Austerity holds Britain in its icy grip, with luxuries more or less limited to the German occupying forces and those who succeed in ingratiating themselves.

The successful invasion left swathes of ruin and destruction that have not yet been repaired. The blackened shell of a Panzer IV tank still sits halfway up Wimbledon high street. Anyone violating curfew, or breaking regulations, is likely to be shot or sent to a concentration camp. Yet there is no point in rebellion - that would just get more people killed. Apparently, the only way forward is to cooperate with the Germans. Kellermann hints to Archer that his young son might possibly attend the good German school in Highgate... On the other hand, perhaps he should be sent to a training school for young Nazis in Germany.

While developing one of his usual opaque plots, Deighton cleverly shows the dilemma facing Archer and others in positions of responsibility. We see the British resistance as more like the present-day Iraqi insurgency (depicted as terrorists, criminals and diehards) than in the heroic light that has retrospectively fallen on those who persisted in fighting the Nazis after their governments had surrendered.

As usual in a Deighton story, it is no use trying to work out which side anyone is on. Mostly, each of the leading players is on his (or her) own side. The question is: who can profit most by cooperating with whom? The answers turn out to be surprising indeed. Tension starts to build with the abrupt arrival of SS Standartenfuehrer Huth from Berlin - a man who stands for no nonsense, works for Himmler, and has dauntingly direct methods. Can the Resistance exploit tensions between the German Army and the SS to rescue the King? What is the secret of the scientist who is found shot dead, apparently suffering from an extreme case of sunburn? Add a beautiful American journalist, a sinister British secret service officer, a US military expedition, sundry criminals, black-marketeers and collaborators, stir vigorously... and get ready for some stunning entertainment.

Deighton's best
By A Customer
"SS GB" is a thoroughly fascinating, absorbing, terrific novel--a first-rate murder mystery wrapped in a huge, wartime conspiracy, with a detailed, completely believable backdrop of Britain defeated and occupied by the Nazis. It is literally impossible to put this book down once you've started. The characters are unforgettable: cool but overwhelmed Detective Superintendent "Archer of the Yard," the sleek, frighteningly menacing SS Standartenfuhrer Huth, the double-edged General Kellermann, loyal Harry Woods, vivacious Barbara Barga--all come to life in a crackerjack spy plot executed on a global basis. Do not miss this book!

If you asked him twenty years ago how the angels coming into his life would change him, Andrew Ramer would never have imagined that they would lead him back to the Judaism of his childhood, or deeper into a celebration of the spiritual blessings of being a gay man - but that's exactly what happened. He continues to talk with the angels, occasionally teaches an angel workshop, and is highly active in the LGBT synagogue two blocks from his home. Grounded in his Jewish roots, he also prays in two local churches, a downtown mosque, and maintains the same Buddhist meditation practice he was doing when the angels first came to him in 1982.

A step-by-step guidebook to get in touch with your angels...
By Laura Haggarty
This book is a thorough guidebook for getting in touch with your personal angels. It's not an easy process, it takes work and dedication, but the benefits can be clearly felt and many. I always know when I've found a book that is valuable to me when I look back at it some years later and find lots of dog-eared pages, and that's certainly the case with my copy of this book.
As with the other reviewer(s), I strongly suggest you read through the entire book first to get an overview of the work to be done, and then go through the process piece by piece. This is not a quick and dirty thing you're trying, but a long and serious project. Don't approach it as anything but. However, once gone through, the benefits are real and substantial. Even if one didn't believe in angels, the grounding and releasing exercises would be of real benefit.
Bottom line, buy this book if you're willing to do the work on yourself to enable yourself to hear your angels.

By Kathy Dannel Vitcak
This book truly opened my eyes and helped me begin my spiritual path. I also read through it first and then went back and slowly read it again and did the practices. It so enchanted me I tracked down the meditation tapes that go with it and have LOVED them.

Alma Daniel has a loving, sweet enrgy and it shows in every word of this book.

THANK YOU!

Amazon.com Review
"These stories," writes Cheever in the preface to this Pulitzer Prize winning collection of stories, "seem at times to be stories of a long-lost world when the city of New York was still filled with a river light, when you heard the Benny Goodman quartets from a radio in the corner stationary store, and when almost everybody wore a hat. Here is the last of that generation of chain smokers who woke the world in the morning with their coughing, who used to get stoned at cocktail parties and perform obsolete dance steps like 'the Cleveland Chicken,' set sail for Europe on ships, who were truly nostalgic for love and happiness, and whose gods were as ancient as yours and mine, whoever you are."

It's just a lot

Depends on your appetite for character studies of mid-20th century white, middle class New Yorkers. Mine was sated after about twenty stories, and I think I had a lot more to go to finish the book.

A Good American Short Story Book
By Laura Torrespico
This is one of the best short story American books I've read. Cheever narrates these stories about ordinary people in a simplistic and nervous fashion. Cheever subtlety describes his characters as pathetic in a sarcastic way but effectively manages to get his readers to like them. His stories are at times shady, moralistic, and mystical that keeps you practically glued to the pages of the book. My favorites are The Swimmer, and The Enormous Radio. Even though his topics touch on the lives of the so called "Wasps", I don't think you have to be one, but have the knowledge of how people that live in quiet desperation live in order to understand and enjoy Cheever's writings.

Near perfect account of a lost way of American life
By Catherine S. Vodrey
The narrow slice of America and the privileged Americans about whom Cheever writes are mostly long-gone--gone with the second World War, with the ubiquitous wearing of hats by men, with prettiness and ladylike ways the only surface requirements for women, with drinking accompanied by secrecy and shame, with country clubs as the center of social lives. Yet the stories resonate still because they are so gorgeously crafted that they rise above the details which might otherwise date them. "Goodbye My Brother" stands, to my mind, as one of the finest examples of the American short story ever written. In its pages you will find family, jealousy, adultery, childhood grievances spilling over into late adulthood arguments, drinking, ignorance of great privilege, bad behavior, card games, beach houses, and patrician resolve to ignore all indiscretion. Though you will find the same elements in many other Cheever stories, his brilliance is in his ability to hew different stories by the dozen out of essentially the same basic ingredients. Despite their similarities, his stories each stand on their own, little wonders of detail. Each story is a different shake of the same kaleidoscope. This collection is marvelous, and provides long-term satisfaction and wonderment at Cheever's talent.

You've got to be kidding me!
By A Customer
As a big fan of historical romances, I was sorely disappointed in the substance, or lack thereof, in this novel. The heroine, a term that I have to use very lightly in this case, was put in one stupid, horrible, and then unbelievable situation after another, yet it seemed that she did not learn from any of them. She seemed to be able to best an opponent two to three times her size, but was completely helpless and witless with a lesser opponent. The author lost creditbiliy with her audience, me, when she started to add pieces to the storyline that had no rhyme or reason.
When I read historical romances, I want to be transported to another place and time and usually try to imagine how I would feel or what I would say if I were placed in the same position as the heroine. Unfortunately, I found myself saying out loud several times while reading this novel; "you've got to be kidding me!"
This was my first Fern Michaels novel, and quite possibly my last. I have heard good things about her as an author but I am afraid to waste my precious reading time with another of her novels for fear that it too would lack credibiity and imagination.

Captive Splendor
By A Customer
This story was horrible! Instead of a strong street smart female character that emerge from the "most horrible experience" a woman can be subjected to, I read about an individual who allows herself to be duped into another horrible situation. There was no growth, depth or strength in this heroine. This is one book we can all do without reading!

Disappointing
By A Customer
I loved "Captive Passions" but this one was a disappointment. There are mistakes in the book (some of the characters' names are wrong) and the plot was a rehash of "Captive Passions" but with less-intelligent and less likeable characters.

Amazon.com Review
Michael Crichton, creator of many a blockbuster, began his writing career while still a student at Harvard Medical School. Though he never practiced medicine, the education was enough to put a gloss of verisimilitude on works like The Andromeda Strain and the long-running television hit ER. Five Patients is ER in real life--circa 1969, when Crichton graduated from medical school. Five different patients are examined at Massachusetts General Hospital; each patient's story illustrates some larger aspect of the hospital system. Thus, Ralph Orlando's death from cardiac arrest engenders a brief history of the modern hospital and emergency ward. John O'Connor, who has an unexplained high fever and infection, spends a month in the hospital, leading to a discourse on the cost of medical care (perhaps the most eye-opening chapter of the book--or the most unintentionally funny one from a 1999 perspective). The saga of Peter Luchesi, a worker whose hand is nearly severed in an industrial accident, leads to a discussion of 20th-century surgical advances. Sylvia Thompson, a traveler with chest pains who is seen by a doctor via closed-circuit TV at an airport, benefits from new (at the time) diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that have altered irrevocably the doctor's role. Finally, the case of Edith Murphy, diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, serves quite literally to educate the medical students and interns who take on much of her care, as the hospital staff hierarchy is dissected and explained. Crichton's style here tends to the sober and bureaucratic--reading it is much more like brain surgery than hanging out in the staff room with George Clooney and Noah Wyle--but for the industrious it's a fascinating glimpse of pre-HMO medicine. --Barrie Trinkle

This was not my favorite Michael Crichton book. It was way too technical for my taste. I think it's better suited for someone in the medical field.
