The title story in Rendell's latest collection was awarded an MWA Edgar, adding to the honors awarded her by American and British critics. These 11 short mysteries, like the author's novels, are intricate and controlled, written with an understatement that magnifies their effects. "The Convolvulus Clock" at a craft exhibit has been sold, but Trixie must have the pretty thing. An elderly and relentlessly moral woman, Trixie gives in to temptation and steals the clock, thereby setting off a chain of disasters. The other 10 tales also involve unremarkable people who stray from the straight and narrow and get into extraordinary trouble. Adulterous lovers pay a cruel price for their sin in "The Orchard Walls." Irrational fears of losing his children drive a father to criminal observance of "Father's Day." Each entry is an example of Rendell's incomparable story-telling gifts. February

From School Library Journal
YA A collection of 11 short gems by a master of suspense. Rendell's stories quickly shift from an innocuous beginning to quirky action and a horrible finale. The commonplace English settings provide contrast for the author's far-from-ordinary characters. For example, a young actor, encouraged by his mother, spends increasing amounts of time dressed in a wolf costume, to his fiancee's misfortune. In another story, a man returns to England after many years abroad, still obsessed with his wife's desertion 40 years earlier. He approaches her home and glimpses a woman who appears not to have aged, and a chilling ending is in store. Another character, an elderly lady, is fond of saying that her friends are beginning to ``go funny''; readers are about to see how ``funny'' she herself has become. Finely crafted and literate, these tales, like Rendell's full-length novels, belong in every mystery collection. Rita G. Keeler, St. John's School, Houston

About the Author
Ruth Rendell was an exceptional crime writer, and will be remembered as a legend in her own lifetime. Her groundbreaking debut novel, From Doon With Death, was first published in 1964 and introduced the reader to her enduring and popular detective, Inspector Reginald Wexford, who went on to feature in twenty-four of her subsequent novels. With worldwide sales of approximately 20 million copies, Rendell was a regular Sunday Times bestseller. Her sixty bestselling novels include police procedurals, some of which have been successfully adapted for TV, stand-alone psychological mysteries, and a third strand of crime novels under the pseudonym Barbara Vine. Very much abreast of her times, the Wexford books in particular often engaged with social or political issues close to her heart. Rendell won numerous awards, including the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger for 1976's best crime novel with A Demon in My View, a Gold Dagger award for Live Flesh in 1986, and the Sunday Times Literary Award in 1990. In 2013 she was awarded the Crime Writers' Association Cartier Diamond Dagger for sustained excellence in crime writing. In 1996 she was awarded the CBE and in 1997 became a Life Peer. Ruth Rendell died in May 2015. Her final novel, Dark Corners, is scheduled for publication in October 2015

Great tales of suspense
By Mia
I was very interested to see how Rendell did in short form and no disappointment here. A lot of her earlier novels were very lean and this is just sort of like taking that to the extreme. These are still very much Rendellian stories, they have the exact same twisty demented sort of heart at the center of a seemingly normal scenarios. She remains firmly within the genre of psychological dark suspense. And these were very entertaining short visits to her strange and scary world. Additional kudos to the kitschy cover. Fun way to spend a couple of hours. Recommended.

From Publishers Weekly
The scatstet syntax and jive jargon used by Cartier make this novel an exhilarating and rhythmic rap. It's an up-tempo tale of a black family, a dance through the decades with jazz fan Double and his daughter, who narrates while Miles and Trane wail in the background: "That's what be-bop isthe threat of black music turnin back outsider-black, leavin white wallflowers all over the place, tryin to jive to a beat that blows their souls outa socket." Double's daughter recalls her father's "exploits and life explorations," remembers incidents of racism and is "subjected to passing-flash memory of still-married me." Then the scene shifts as the narrator and her young daughter trade life in "menopausal Saint Lou" for a "fill-in-blank future" in the "San Fran of my now." Cartier riffs on "abracadabra afternoons" and "militant memories" and runs through the scales of post-Kerouac bop prosody. The result is finger-popping fiction, an authentic American blues in the night from a gifted and talented writer.

cool as Miles, warm as Ella
By George Schaefer
this book was a serendipitous find. I picked it up at a fleamarket for a quarter. It was a deligtful discovery. Ms.(?) Cartier is a clever, gifted writer. The narrative is fast-paced and swift. There are many surprising wordplays in this book. I found myself stopping to smile at her use of language. This is a jazz novel par excellence. She introduces Double and Vole through their daughter who narrates the novel. Double is an urban sage while Vole is a social climber worrying about moving ahead in society. The daughter gets bused to a white school and faces the bigotry of American society. it follows on to The daughters own marriage. She now is a parent of a young child. This multigenerational view is rewarding. It gives one an honest view of the trials and tribulations facing minorities in America.

From the Publisher
As a former teacher-turned-editor, who read DIBS many times before even coming to work here at Ballantine, I feel very connected to this book. The author is a leading authority on play therapy and the treatment of emotionally disturbed children. Dibs is one of these lost children. The story takes us through his long journey from being labeled as "mentally defective," to emerging as a gifted and lovable young man. Whether you're a teacher, a parent, a psychologist, or just someone who loves to actually feel what they're reading, DIBS is for you.

The Boy Who Would Not Play
By Wong Ee Lynn
What could have caused a 5-year-old child with an IQ of 168 to clam up and stop talking, playing or laughing? Virginia Axline, author of 'Play Therapy' finds out as she records the progress of Dibs in this book that has since become a child therapy classic. A review in Amazon.com held forth that Dibs is autistic, but it is clear to me that he is not. Dibs is a child who deliberately withheld speech and affection as a means of self-defense against his cold, unloving, high- achieving and demanding parents and their battery of tests to prove him gifted. He does not suffer a neurological disorder nor is he autistic.
This remarkably moving and honest book gives credit not to the therapist/author for having worked a miracle, rather, it is the child and his inner strength and resolve that are given praise. The amazingly articulate child acts out his anger through his play of dolls. In a poignant part, Dibs reverses the parent-child role and 'makes' a 'mother' doll build a mountain upon the instruction of the 'boy' doll.
"It is too hard to do," said Dibs. "Nobody can build a mountain. But I'll make her do it. She'll have to build the mountain and do it right. There is a right way and wrong way of doing things and you will do it the right way."
After some thought, he decided he would help the 'mother' and not impose such an onerous task on her. He talks of love and caring for his mother and sister. This shows that Dibs, despite his frustration, fear and anger, has great capacity for compassion, empathy and forgiveness. The therapy sessions with his non-judgmental therapist helped Dibs be aware of his feelings and of matters within and without his control.
Having learned it is all right to be a child and to be himself, Dibs unlocked the doors in his life and introduced himself to the world of other children. The doors of affection, acceptance and understanding that had been closed to him by his rigid, compulsive, scientist parents were opened after Dibs realized he need not fear the censure of his therapist and when his parents, after his mother's two surreptitious meetings with the therapist, decide to open up too and allow their children to grow and learn naturally without pressure and constant criticism. Dibs proved himself a real hero when he identified himself with a grownup doll and declared himself 'big, strong and not afraid any more'. He went on to be a
sociable, intelligent child with a keen love for nature and other people. The author recalls with pleasure how Dibs, at age 15, wrote a letter to his school newspaper to protest the dismissal of his classmate. He wrote with conviction and a strong sense of justice. The letter was signed: 'With sincerity and intent to act, I am, sincerely yours, Dibs.' Such is the integrity and leadership qualities of an admirable child who at one point was labeled mentally retarded. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the emotional development of children.

impact of conversation on growth
By eric h kraut
As a practicing oncologist I deal with peoples struggles for their life. This is another story about an individual's struggle to take control of their life.In some other reviews of this book I think the readers missed the basic concept. This is not a book that blames parents for their childrens psychological problems, rather it points out the power of conversations and actions on another human beings emotional well being. Especially the power during early childhood when the individual is developing his or her self concept. It should remind us all that the conversations we have about people including ourselves can alter a life. The pivotal point for Dibbs was acceptance of his self expression by a talented psychologist then himself and finally his parents. In the epilogue the letter Dibbs writes points it out beautifully.I recommend it highly for all those interested in the triumph of the human spirit.

Axline AND Dibs' mother are both victims...
By Suzy Shedd
...of an inaccurate perspective. In terms of writing quality and emotional "pull," this book deserves 5 stars. And, like Freud, it is important to read -- in the correct context. Axline was a pioneer of play therapy (for individuals and groups), and I think there is no doubt that it is a fruitful method for interacting with troubled children. In my practice as a psychologist, I have certainly found play therapy to be extremely productive because a) it is the natural "language" of children, and b) it is also one of the most important ways children learn.
So...yes, I believe Dibs (as presented by Axline -- we do have to rely on her description) closely fits the criteria for Asperger's Syndrome, a syndrome on the autistic spectrum where very bright children capable of complex thinking may be quite impaired in basic social, motor and communication skills. And I do believe her therapy with him was very helpful because she provided a model for social interaction, one-on-one (group situations were probably too overwhelming) that allowed him to increase his positive interactions with others (which, in turn, increased their positive response to him).
I sympathize with reviewers who are outraged at the use of "refrigerator mother" theory in the book -- and with the reviewers who experienced the pain of unloving or abusive parents. No, an unloving or uninvolved parent cannot "cause" autism. However, it is also true that no autistic child was ever helped by a lack of love or being locked away from others. What both Axline and many reviewers have not taken into account, though, is the degree to which love between parent and child is developed interactively: Dibs mother blames herself because he was an unwanted child (and Axline agrees with this assessment), but it is clear that people unprepared and unwilling to be parents would need an outgoing, engaging child to "seduce" them into affiliation. Faced with a difficult and unresponsive child, with no experience of nurturing, it is not uncommon for parents to find interacting with their child so aversive that a "refrigerated" relationship develops. (Particularly if, as an astute earlier reviewer noted, one or both of Dibs' parents had ASperger's syndrome.) Dibs' sister, outgoing and charming, allows them to experience "success" as parents, so they, naturally, interact more warmly with her. It might be said not that "rerigerator mothers" cause autism, but that autsim in a child can sometimes lead to refrigerated parents.
It is important to be fair to Axline, I think. If Dibs was at least 15 years old when the book was written, she was working with him in the late 40's or early 50's -- and for her time, she showed considerable compassion for Dibs' parents. Moreover, many reviewers are suspicious of the book, thinking that she claims to have achieved her results in 7-12 sessions. Careful reading shows that Axline worked with Dibs approximately once weekly for nine months. Even allowing for illness and vacations, 30 or so sessions with a highly skilled therapist can support massive change in a young child. I'm inclined to believe that what "worked" for Axline was her modeling of social interactions at a pace slow enough for Dibs to absorb skills that led to positive reinforcement when he used them at home and at school. In addition, I think play therapy would have greatly ameliorated the anguish he undoubtedly experienced at being unloved. In return, his mother was able to feel more successful and therefore more loving, which led to a slow but continual improvement in their relationship.
I have always wanted to hear Dibs' point of view. He would, presumably, be in his mid to late 50's now, and I often wonder how adulthood has been for him, how he remembers Dr. Axline, and what he thinks of this book.

Amazon.com Review
Even readers who don't normally enjoy Arthurian legends will love this version, a retelling from the point of view of the women behind the throne. Morgaine (more commonly known as Morgan Le Fay) and Gwenhwyfar (a Welsh spelling of Guinevere) struggle for power, using Arthur as a way to score points and promote their respective worldviews. The Mists of Avalon's Camelot politics and intrigue take place at a time when Christianity is taking over the island-nation of Britain; Christianity vs. Faery, and God vs. Goddess are dominant themes.

Young and old alike will enjoy this magical Arthurian reinvention by science fiction and fantasy veteran Marion Zimmer Bradley. --Bonnie Bouman

Review
"[A] monumental reimagining of the Arthurian legends . . . Reading it is a deeply moving and at times uncanny experience. . . . An impressive achievement."
--The New York Times Book Review

"Marion Zimmer Bradley has brilliantly and innovatively turned the myth inside out. . . . add[ing] a whole new dimension to our mythic history."
--San Francisco Chronicle

"Gripping . . . Superbly realized . . . A worthy addition to almost a thousand years of Arthurian tradition."
--The Cleveland Plain Dealer

From the Publisher
I love this book. Plain and simple: It's the absolute best retelling of the Arthurian legend I've ever read. Over the years, I've given copies to everyone close to me. I haven't reread it in years, but I must still talk about it, because when I was in Ireland and my husband commented to my 8-year-old daughter (who hasn't read it...yet!) that there are no snakes in Ireland, she piped up that the snakes that were supposedly driven out of Ireland by Saint Patrick were actually the Druid priests, whose wrists were encircled with snake tattoos. And that it's just a natural phenomenon that there are no native Irish snakes. And thus begins another generation of Mists of Avalon believers!

A Novel Take On A Classic Tale - Superb!!
By Jana L.Perskie
Marion Zimmer Bradley's "The Mists of Avalon" is one of my favorite versions of the Arthurian legend. I first read the novel in the early 1990s, right after its publication. I reread it recently and was surprised at how much I enjoyed this extraordinary novel the second time around. I turned the pages more slowly and took more time to savor Ms. Bradley's excellent narrative and fresh version of the legendary saga of the rise and fall of Camelot. Her take on the classic characters gives them new depth and dimension. She tells her tale from a feminine perspective, and while the King and knights of Camelot dwell on war, battles and keeping their golden city and realm safe, along with focusing on chivalric honor, the women have different priorities and concerns.

The tale is told from the points of view of the much maligned Morgaine, (Morgana Le Fey), Priestess of Avalon and Gwenhwyfar, (Gwynivere), Christian princess and future queen of Camelot. Although most of the events of the traditional Arthurian legend are presented here, it is extremely interesting how the tale, told by men, changes when viewed through the eyes and experiences of a woman. This is also the important story of the political and religious conflict between the new Christianity and the "old ways" of goddess worship. Believers of each religion seek to control the throne, but ultimately Christianity ascends to be the organized religion of the land. Since Morgaine is a Druid High Priestess, it would explain why she received such a bad rap in Christian civilization. The reader also views other famous female characters from a different vantage point, including Igraine, Morgaine's and Arthur's mother,
Ms. Bradley follows Morgaine from childhood to Priestess in her home on the Isle of Avalon, the center of Druidism and goddess worship since the Roman occupation forced the religion underground, where it remained long after the Roman departure. Mists surround this mystical isle, protecting it and its inhabitants from all who do not have the psychic powers to penetrate the barrier. Morgaine has dedicated her life to preserving her ancient religion and tries to defend it against the growing numbers of her countrymen and the Camelot royalty who exchange the old ways for Christianity. She is also a very powerful person and struggles against the stereotypes which expect her to adhere to more traditional "feminine," (dependent), behavior and roles.
Bradley also follows the lovely Gwenhwyfar from the innocence of her girlhood to her rise as King Arthur's Christian Queen. She deeply fears Druid magic and her terror causes her to miscarry a long awaited baby. King Arthur's acquiescence to his wife's pleas to turn his back on the old ways and adopt Christianity is the beginning of the cataclysmic fall of his reign.
This is a most unique novel and Ms. Bradley's innovative fantasy version of Camelot, Britain during the Dark Ages, and the profound changes which took place in the land and among the people during this period had me riveted until I completed the last page. If you are open to a different take on a classic tale, then I highly recommend this wonderful novel.

A man's point of view
By A Customer
As I sense many of those who posted a review are women, I felt compelled to offer my thoughts.
A little preface: I read this book when I was in my early 30's. I am a college-educated professional, and a married heterosexual. I generally read non-fiction: political and military history and mountaineering literature. This book came up in a discussion with my wife, a published writer, who has read it several times and claimed it was one of her all-time favorites. As this is not slight praise from a woman who thinks Shakespeare was a lighweight compared to John Dunne, and actually argue the point!
So I picked up this book and read the first page. Quite a mistake. Three days later I finished this is not so small work having spent nearly every available non-working moment enthralled in this modern masterpiece. Simply put, it is very well written. It is a great story and it is well told. There is romance, fantasy, religion, war, politics, intrigue, and other elements to keep your attention.
I pity those who are so heavily invested in the "accuracy" of the Arthurian legend as to miss the beauty of this book. Doubly so for those who are too religiously dogmatic.

The definition of a good book!
By A Customer
I had forgotten my love for reading after going through so many books that didn't hold my attention. The Mists of Avalon reminded me of my love for a good book and got me hooked on Marion Zimmer Bradley. This book is a perfect blend of romance, action, magic and just plain creativity that binds you to the story and leaves you begging for more. This book tells the Arthurian legend through the eyes of the women around King Arthur's life. It tells the story of the strength of Morgain (his sister), Igraine (his mother) and Guenivere (his wife). It wonderfully portrays the bravery of these women in such a brutal time, without taking away the romance and insecurity's women feel. Beautiful book. Be sure to read the Forest House and Lady of the Lake also, which take place before The Mists of Avalon although Bradley wrote them afterward. I started with the Mists of Avalon and had no trouble at all. Marion Zimmer Bradley was a genious. I'm terribly gratefull to her for giving me something to refresh my mind.

These books have never received the recognition they deserve. It's one of the most powerful and complex fantasy trilogies since Lord of the Rings, but Donaldson is not just another Tolkien wanabee. Each character-driven book introduces unexpected plots, sub-plots, and a host of magical beings so believably rendered you'd believe you might bump into them on your way to the bookstore.

Want to feel annoyed? Then this is your book!
By Kikaida
My wife used to rave about this book and series. Having just got a Kindle, I figured this would be an interesting read. The issue I have with the book is that I HATE the main character. He's a miserable, sniveling, whiny cry baby. I can't stand how he treats people and why someone hasn't done away with him yet is beyond me, despite his goal. I root for his death and demise in the most painful way. It is tortuous to have to read his banter from the 1st person. The anger management issues that he has and the "poor pitiful me" attitude is just grading on the nerves after 14 chapters. You keep reading, hoping that at some point he'll have a revelation and become a descent person but it just doesn't seem like its going to happen. I look forward to finishing this trial in patience as that is what it has become. 50% done and counting down the pages.

I find that the author has gone out of his way to use overly abstruse, recondite and daedalean words...Rephrased, he went overboard with his thesaurus. I have a deep vocabulary well to draw from but this author has reached the point of just being ridiculous with his word selection. I don't mind a sprinkling of new terms here and there but chapter after chapter full of "see how intellectual I am? do you know this word?" cockiness gets really old.

I read to feel good, I read for wonderment, I read for excitement, I read for knowledge, I read for thrills and I read for beauty...all of which are glaringly absent from this book.

Hopefully I'll finish this but more and more I want to delete it and move on to more promising literature. Will there be an update? Stay tuned......

*Update and conclusion*

I think, for me, the two star rating is fair "I don't like it". After my initial harsh review, I pretty much stick to it. Although shortly after writing it the book finally took a turn of sorts to more interesting ground. I found that after 14-15 painful chapters, it was about 8-9 chapters too late to salvage my indulgence. It seems that so much time was wasted needlessly in the head of Covenant that so much omission was made as to "world building". Yes certain scenes really did come to life and without giving it away, the horses were simply beautiful and their land quite vivid.

One cannot help but to draw stark parallels to Lord of the Rings. Although I try to give literary freedom to the author under the premise of 'common themes'...Sort of like a blues song sounding, for the most part, the same as the rest with slight variations. But it is without a doubt that certain things were quite glaring and Tolkien-esk.

I found the pre-climax battle a bit clunky in its delivery and the culmination of that scene very abrupt. I had to read it twice and thought "and thats it? just like that?". I also found the ending to be quite stark and uninspiring. As far as endings go, there was nothing left dangling, no opening to compel me to the 2nd in the series. This saddens me as I see so many glowing reviews that I want to like it, I want to get into it but just feel quite dissatisfied. As far as my ongoing interest in the rest of the series, I feel the story delivered much too, little, much too late. Perhaps if I'm feeling a bit saddistic I may give number 2 a try, but for now I have so many other books lined up that I think that it most unlikely that I will.

If you liked or loved the book, nothing is meant as an offense to you. Simply my take and your mileage obviously varied.

A Journey to Another Dimension Yields Many Hours of Fascination
By Jeanne Gabriel Pocius
In 1977, the year my son was born, I first discovered the writings of Stephen R. Donaldson, and made my first journey to "The Land" a magical place, filled with light-filled wraiths, the amazing hills of Andelain, hurtloam (which heals all illnesses), Giants, Ranyhyn (Horses who hear the summons of those who need them years beforehand in order to be where they are needed at the right time), and, of course, the hero of what would become a lengthy series: Thomas Covenant, a writer with spontaneous Hansen's Disease (leprosy), who is called to "The Land" by an elderly beggar. Recently, the final chronicles have been released, and though the original trilogy is no longer in print, it can be found in kindle editions on amazon. This is a series for the ages: filled with challenges beyond measure, so, too, it is filled with the hope born of love and strivings. Do take the time to get to know Covenant, Linden Avery and all their myriad companions in the Land. Your life will be so much the richer for the experience!

Fatal Equilibrium, by Marshall Jevons

At Harvard, tenure decisions are a matter of life -- or death.

For Dennis Gossen, the economics department whiz kid currently being considered for tenure, it's definitely death. When he's turned down by the high-and-mighty Promotion and Tenure Committee, Gossen commits suicide.

A Question of Cost Accounting...

Or does he? It's hard to imagine why a young man with a brilliant scholarly future -- at Harvard or not -- would come up with an equation in which the opportunity cost of killing himself (a high price, considering his potential earnings) would be outweighed by the emotional cost of failing to receive tenure.

... Or Utility?

Then two members of the P and T Committee are murdered, and it becomes clear to Professor Henry Spearman of the Economics Department that the killer must be on the committee. But which of his illustrious colleagues would have significantly increased his -- or her -- utility (i.e., happiness) by murdering a faculty member or two? Or three?

Economist fiction
By Mike Rossander
Fatal Equilibrium reminded me of early science fiction (written by scientists about scientists for an audience of other scientists). This book is definitely written by an economist about economists. If you're part of that clique, it's a great book.
Not everyone will consider it light reading, though. If you don't have at least one econ class somewhere in your background, some significant parts of the book (and the plot) will go over your head. There were sections that felt like they were cut-and-pasted right from the author's lecture notes. I kept hoping that the book would be more like Larry Niven's work - grounded in theory, but first and foremost, a gripping story with compelling characters. I'd rather absorb my knowledge along the way than be lectured to.
I enjoyed it and I'll read it again.

First and best of a series
By Annag Chandler
Of the three books to date in this series, I find the first to be the most interesting and closely plotted. Be prepared for the insertion of economic analyses in the most unexpected places; but if you like your mysteries to be more mental and less bone-crunching, vulgarity-spewing mayhem, the Henry Spearman series is a set of entertaining reads for an evening or two.

"Written with clarity and a lively eye both for detail and for the progress of feminism in the United States."
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
In this fascinating study of American women inventors, historian Anne Macdonald shows how creative, resourceful, and entrepreneurial women helped to shatter the ancient stereotypes of mechanically inept womanhood. In presenting their stories, Anne Macdonald's thorough research in patent archives and her engaging use of period magazine, journals, lectures, records from major fairs and expositions, and interviews, have made her book nothing less than an overall history of the women's movement in America.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Since Mary Kies (inventor of a straw-weaving process for hat making) became the first female patentee in 1809, American women have developed an astonishingly wide range of devices and products, from pyrotechnic night signals, the Snugli, and brassieres, to Stove Top Stuffing and the anti-herpes drug Zovirax. Limited solely to those who applied for and were granted patents, this well-documented chronology describes not only the inventions themselves, but also the social milieu, the setbacks, and the successes of the women who designed them. By choosing this informative format, MacDonald has done more than merely tell the story of a lot of inventions; she has penned a readable and unique social history of American women. Frequent quotations from diaries, letters, and other documents along with numerous black-and-white illustrations make this book an excellent resource.

From Kirkus Reviews
Macdonald (No Idle Hands, 1988) presents a sprightly, informative chronicle of women inventors in America--a two-steps- forward/one-and-a-half-steps-back history that aptly mirrors the rise and fall of feminist movements over two centuries. American females owe their start in inventing, Macdonald says, to the Patent Act of 1790, created by a new Congress eager to encourage technological progress and to open the patent system to all--including women--on an equal basis. Soon, despite the formidable social, economic, and psychological barriers that remained, patent applications from women began to trickle in. Inventions sprang, naturally, from the environments in which the inventors found themselves--the vast majority of patents for women's inventions were granted for household items, gynecological products, and fashion innovations--though, particularly during wars, when more women ran farms and business, female-invented technical devices useful in agriculture and in battle (including milking machines and periscopes) won patents as well. Macdonald, who herself has received a patent for a knitting device, exhibits humor and empathy when describing others' applications (``spiritualism'' fads led to claims by some that inventions first appeared in divine visions; other applicants, hoping to speed up the slow application process, bombarded the patent office with pleas of poverty or boasts about their products' popularity). She draws prescient parallels between advances by women inventors, who grasped at the right to their own intellectual property long before they won the right to any other, and the state of feminism in their times. But as of 1988, Macdonald says, the percentage of patents granted to women had climbed to a mere 5.6--an apt example, she suggests, of how far the feminist movement still has to go. Captivating history--a stimulating, highly readable contribution to women's studies. (Black-and-white illustrations throughout.) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

a good start
By C. C. Watt
This book does explore contributions by women to American engineering and invention, but it seems to focus on women as wives and helpers of inventors and/or on women who invented "feminine" things like gadgets for sewing and cooking. Few of the women profiled seemed to work in the "hard" sciences.

The prose is not terribly exciting or energetic. I would recommend this book to readers interested in feminism or invention, but I would encourage them to find other sources as well.

Magnificent resource!
By Ron C. Hustvedt Jr.
One of my students needed this book for a research project on Madeline Joslyn Gage and her pamphlet titled "Woman as Inventor." This book is a tremendous resource on that pamphlet but also many women inventors, innovators and engineers who are often overlooked, ignored or completely disregarded in other books and resources. Macdonald's analysis is well written and thorough. A must read for anybody interested in learning more about the real contribution women made to the ingenuity of America.

Go Ahead and Make Something Better
By Linda A. D-R
This book, Feminine Ingenuity, is a real page-turner and extremely hard to put down. In the 1800s, girls were raised to be stay-at-home wives and mothers. Apparently, the fathers and husbands had absolute power over women, especially as women could not own property and even had no claim to her children in the case of divorce. Some received no schooling or very little as it wouldn't be needed. It was considered to be disgraceful and "unfeminine" if a woman found a better way to do something and had the defiant nerve to actually want to patent her idea. In her circle of friends, inventing made a woman 'different' and not to be associated with her. At the top of the food chain, patent attorneys charged high fees and the Patent Office was not friendly to women who happened to be creative and smart. When the Womens Suffrage Movement arrived, even they waffled between helping and hindering women inventors. This book lays out what women did invent despite the hindrance of Victorian men. If you like windshield wipers, Kevlar, brown paper bags, a Snugli for holding your baby, hot air ballooning, your dishwasher, hang gliding, Nystatin powder for fungal infections, your electric hot water heater, well-fitting bras, fire escapes, and alphabet blocks for the kids, thank a woman. This book is a keeper.

Eons ago, a gentle race of giants fled the planet Minerva, leaving the ancestors of man to fend for themselves. Fifty thousand years ago, Minerva exploded, hurling its moon into an orbit about Earth.

In the twenty-first century, scientists Victor Hunt and Chris Danchekker, doing research on Ganymede, attract a small band of friendly aliens who are lost in time - and who begin to reveal something of the origin of mankind. Finally, man believed that he comprehended his place in the universe . . . until he learned of the Watchers in the stars. Now Earth finds itself in the middle of a power struggle between a benevolent alien empire and an off-shoot group of upstart humans who hate Earth more than any alien ever could.

''Truly imaginative technology.'' --Publishers Weekly

From the Inside Flap
In the 21st century, scientists Victor Hunt and Chris Danchekker, doing research on Ganymede, attract a small band of friendly aliens lost in time, who begin to reveal something of the origin of mankind. Finally, man thought he comprehended his place in the Universe . . . until he learned of the Watchers in the stars!

About the Author
JAMES P. HOGAN (1941-2010) was a science fiction writer in the grand tradition, combining informed and accurate speculation from the cutting edge of science and technology with suspenseful storytelling and living, breathing characters. His first novel was greeted by Isaac Asimov with the rave, ''Pure science fiction . . . Arthur Clarke, move over!'' and his subsequent work quickly consolidated his reputation as a major SF author. His many novels include the New York Times bestsellers The Proteus Operation and Endgame Enigma, as well as the Prometheus Award winner The Multiplex Man.

An intriguing continuation to the Inherit the Stars saga
By thomas moore
Giant's Star picks up almost precisely where The Gentle Giants of Ganymede left off. This entry continues the problem solving theme of the first volume (Inherit the Stars), except the mystery is a current and urgent one, threatening the future of mankind, not just an ancient puzzle concerning man's origins. The cast of characters includes the familiar faces of Vic Hunt and Chris Danchekker, their Ganymeans friends (including the irrepressible ZORAC) and many new friends, and, in something of a first for this series, enemies. Typical Hogan high tech extrapolation, including the use of a virtual reality technology by the aliens (impressive for a book written in the early 80s). If you've enjoyed this series so far, you'll find this volume a worthy successor. Enjoy!

The third Giants novel (3.5 stars)
By TChris
(This review might be perceived as containing a spoiler. It is difficult to review the book without revealing its central conceit and, in any event, there is way more to the story than the critical fact I mention below, which is revealed at roughly the novel's midway point. If you are nevertheless averse to spoilers in discussions of 34 year old novels, skip this review.)

In the first two Giants novels, we learned about the origin of Earth's moon and the role that aliens (inaptly called Ganymeans) played in the development of human life. In Giants' Star, we learn how alien meddling slowed the progress of human development by tickling humanity's interest in magic, myth, and religion, thus diverting us from the rigorous path of science, which Hogan regarded as the One True Path of Enlightenment. Without the damned aliens, it seems, we would all be Vulcans, worshipping logic rather than deities.

I am neither religious nor a scientist so I have no axe to grind. Galileo and Darwin and a number of other scientists certainly had their share of religious critics, but James Hogan's suggestion that religion and myth substantially slowed the progress of science is at least debatable (see, e.g., Galileo Goes to Jail for a different perspective). Hogan, on the other hand, was a scientist and his firm conviction that science yields truth (notwithstanding the countless examples of the scientific method producing incorrect answers that scientists advanced with certitude) is greatly amusing.

In addition to being a scientist, Hogan was a pretty good science fiction writer. Giants' Star again features Victor Hunt, a scientist-turned-bureaucrat, who manages the huge research enterprise that tries of make sense of all the discoveries that followed first contact with the Ganymeans. In Giants' Star, the third novel in the series, we learn that there are actually factions of Ganymeans, one of which was previously unknown to humans, at least in their modern form. The new Giants, the Jevlenese, have long been making mischief on Earth. It falls to Hunt and his fellow scientists, with the help of friendlier Ganymeans, to do something about it. Fortunately, when it comes to cunning, deceit, and the art of war, nobody beats humans.

Apart from his stuffiness, Hunt has never had much personality. The Giants novels (my old paperback calls this the third of a trilogy, but Hogan wrote two more) are notable for their ideas more than their characters or plots. The ideas in Giants' Star are less interesting than those in the first two novels, leaving a plot that is moderately entertaining, more so in the second half as it finally picks up steam. Like the others, this novel ends with a revelation, but this one seems more forced than the first two. The first novel is the best; the second and third are about equal in quality. I would give Giants' Star 3 1/2 stars if I could.

It reads well
By G. C. Levine
The story outline is basically plausible. It presents an interesting problem and if proven could cause everything society wants to believe in (can believe in? Should believe in?) to find itself being thrown out an airlock.
