About the Author
PETER S. BEAGLE is one of the world's best-loved fantasy authors. His works include the novels A Fine and Private Place and The Folk of the Air, as well as nonfiction books and the screenplay for the animated film version of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. He lives in Davis, California.

From AudioFile
Peter Beagle reads an abridged version of his classic fantasy, first published in 1968. The story recounts the journey of the last unicorn to find "her people," unicorns who have been imprisoned by the evil King Haggard. This abridged version of the fable retains the texture and wonder of the original. The author gives a semi-voiced performance, skillfully conveying the emotional atmosphere of the story. Bridges of classical guitar music contribute to the mood of the story. Suitable for older children and young adults as well as adults, this production will bring this lovely story to many who missed the book. It's a classic of its genre and deserves a place in most audio collections. M.A.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

The Post-Modern Fairy Tale
By mp
Along with the rest of the civilized world, my wandering memories often lead me back to two of my favorite childhood movies, "The Neverending Story" and "The Last Unicorn." Practically all I could remember of the latter was some skull yelling "Unicorn! Uuuunicorn!" That image and that voice have left a lingering discomfort in the back of my mind for years. A while back, I found a little time to investigate Michael Ende's novel, "The Neverending Story," and just recently, I managed to come across a copy of "The Last Unicorn," and I couldn't help but read it. In both cases, these novels have more than repayed my childhood memories, giving my adult mind philosophical and literary substance as well as real joy. Peter S. Beagle's 1968 novel, "The Last Unicorn," is much more than a simple fantasy story - though it is rife with magicians, mythical creatures, and all of the customary trappings. It is even more than a complex fantasy story - somehow Beagle enchants us into a timeless place where nothing seems unusual - "The Last Unicorn" creates a space for magic in our modern lives.
The novel begins as a unicorn overhears two hunters riding through her wood - the hunters debate whether unicorns exist anymore. The unicorn begins to wonder if indeed she is the last of her kind, and goes in search of other unicorns. She is caught sleeping by Mommy Fortuna, owner of the Midnight Carnival, who displays the unicorn for a time alongside a real harpy and a motley bunch of meek, hopeless animals who are made, through Fortuna's magic, to resemble other dangerous mythical beasts for the entertainment of travellers, tourists, and townsfolk. Schmendrick, a fairly useless magician, and an assistant to the Midnight Carnival, recognizes the unicorn for what she is, and freeing her, they set off together to find the unicorns. Once they are joined by a woodland dweller named Molly Grue, the company is complete. Their search brings them to the domain of King Haggard, who, along with the demoniacal, but eerily incorporeal Red Bull, seems to have something to do with the disappearance of the unicorns.
Though the novel is a quest, there isn't much real movement - the novel moves from the unicorn's wood, over land to Haggard's castle by the sea, which is where almost half of the novel takes place. The more significant quests here are ones of self-discovery, as the unicorn, Schmendrick, and Prince Lir, King Haggard's heir, must all try to figure out who they are, what they want to be, and how to accomplish their goals without being consumed by existential despair. Related questions the novel poses include speculations on the nature of the hero, on the metafictional nature of the fairy tale as a genre, and what the difference is between evil and self-interest, between love and hatred. "The Last Unicorn" is also a rumination on the nature of interpersonal (or interspecies) relationships, and is in spots as concerned with ecology and the environment as J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."
However, far and away, the most compelling facets of "The Last Unicorn" for me are Beagle's minor touches, minutiae that some people might miss on a first reading. Seemingly meaningless conversations, like the one between the hunters which begins the novel, between Captain Cully and his disaffected latter-day Robin Hoods in the forest, or between a 'married' pair of blue jays betray a depth and attention to detail and a real artistry in Beagle's literary workmanship. They alert us, as certainly as Tolkien's work does, to the fact that we, the novel's readers, live in a prosaic world, divested of magic and enchantments. Beagle's novel shows that creating, living in, and sustaining a fantasy world can be as much work, and can involve as much pain as our own normal daily lives. Indeed, one amazing quality of "The Last Unicorn" is that it hardly differentiates between the normal modern world and that of the fairy tale. One reviewer mentions that the novel takes place in the Middle Ages - is it at all astonishing then, to hear Cully at one point mention the "field-recordings" that will one day be made of his oral poetry while he himself eats a taco?
"The Last Unicorn" has endured for almost 40 years because it manages to imbue things like "field-recordings" with a kind of magical quality that seems as natural as talking birds and butterflies. Beagle also reminds us that we are each heroes of our own stories - whether we stick to the literary conventions of genre or not. The inclusion of subtle anachronisms and metafictional commentaries like these clues us to Beagle's art - the creation of a new kind of fairy tale, one which attempts to make our own world, our own lives, sources of almost limitless wonder and joy, as well as of continuing epic challenges.

A story of wit and charm, immeasurable beauty and emotion.
By Kikyo C.
The Last Unicorn is one of most astounding books I have ever read. Not only because of the story, which is a fairytale in every sense of the word, but also because of Beagle's flawless writing, which weaves a spell of words and images that I find myself willingly ensnared in every time I open its pages. I find myself lingering over each sentence, each word, and I am astounded by the care with which he tells this tale.
Once upon a time, there was a unicorn. A beautiful unicorn... who was all alone. She sets out on a journey to seek others of her kind and is joined on her travels by a bumbling magician and an old spinster, neither of who are what they first appear to be. Encountering magical monsters, outlaws and suspicious townspeople, the three travelers find themselves at the gate of a forbidding castle wherein lives a cruel king and a gentle prince. It is in the walls of this castle that the truth lies. But can they accept what the truth will bring?
Beagle tells an amazing tale, of love and loss, of heartache and hope. Each of the characters in his work has such life and depth, and I see myself in each and every one of them. From an inept magician who desperately seeks to be more than what he is to the outlaws who cry out with loss of that which they have never known, there is so much life in these few short pages that I find myself reading and rereading each page, afraid lest I miss something. When Schmendrick cries, "I'll make you into a bad poet with dreams!" I want to laugh, but at the same time I want to cry with pity, with unexplainable sorrow for something I can't quite understand and am not sure I want to.
The Last Unicorn is about more than just a quest for unicorns. It is also a story about the things that we love and what we will do - or not do - for that love. It is about what really defines a hero, and what constitutes a happy ending. But most of all, it is about magic. Joy. Sadness. Beauty. It is about all the things we are and all the things we long to be. It is a breathtakingly beautiful story by a wonderful writer, and I recommend it as one of the best books I have ever read.

"The Last Unicorn" comic: a long-time fan's review
By M. Natisin
If you're contemplating purchasing the comic adaptation of "The Last Unicorn" , chances are that this will not be your first foray into the world created by Peter S. Beagle in his best-known novel. In "The Last Unicorn", a unicorn discovers that she is the last of her kind and sets out on a quest to discover that has become of her kin. If you're like me, you've read the book and watched the movie, and so as a fan you might wonder what this newest incarnation of the story has to offer.

The Last Unicorn comic gathers the 6 separate issues released by IDW publishing into one full color hard-cover volume. From a purely aesthetic standpoint the book design is impeccable, with violet foil lettering on front and back and a classy layout. The six chapters that make up the book are separated by pages that sport the same illustrations that were featured on the covers of the respective single comic issues.

There is immediately something a little more "grown up" about the comic adaptation as opposed to the animated movie. Renae de Liz's style may have much to do with this. Her illustrations tend more toward stylized realism than the far more soft, cartoony style employed in the movie. Ray Dillon's colors are atmospheric and brooding. Characters such as the Harpy Celaeno, Mommy Fortuna, Ruhk and King Haggard are actually frightening to look at in the comic version, while their movie versions are a little more approachable. For those comfortable with the representations of characters such as the unicorn (Lady Amalthea), Schmendrick and Molly Grue shown in the 80's animated movie, the character designs of the comic certainly pay homage to those designs.

What is particularly enjoyable about this adaptation is that plot points and scenes that were in the original novel but omitted from the movie have been included in the comic. There is a magician mentor named Nikos, who turned a male unicorn into a human. As in the novel, Schmendrick is cursed with youth, a side note that never made it into the animated feature. There is a city named Hagsgate again, and Arachne is back in Mommy Fortuna's Midnight Carnival as is "Elli". There is even a single page that alludes to the "blue bird" scene from the novel (in which a pair of married blue birds argue over whether or not the husband bird actually saw a unicorn).

The extras at the end of the book include interviews of both Peters S. Beagle and Peter Gillis, the man who adapted The Last Unicorn into a comic book format. There is a small art gallery in the back that features pieces by guest artists and small thumbnails of the six "alternate" comic book covers done by Frank Stockton. There are also half-page images taken directly from the comic (with the text bubbles removed) so that one may admire the layout of some very beautifully designed pages. These are often too small for my liking, but they are nice "extras".

The comic is *almost* a complete triumph. I say almost because there is one omission that really should have made it into the comic. Once again, King Haggard's four aged men-at-arms are mentioned only in passing dialogue. Much like in the animated movie, the characters are never seen and their small arc and subsequent return to youth is cut from the story. In his interview at the end of the comic, even Peter Gillis laments that these characters were once more cut out of the story due to page restrictions. Truly, it would have made this adaptation even more special to have this rather important plot point addressed in the comic book, even more so because it is left out of the movie. Other slight problems had to do with the panel pacing toward the end and the clunky descriptive text during the battle with the Red Bull. There was an over-use of sentences starting with "And..." that started to feel very redundant. But I feel for the illustrator, who doubtlessly had a challenge shoving as much as possible onto the small amount of additional pages that were added. The page-limit on the comic was reached before the completion of the series. A total of 12 extra pages had to be added... and paid for out-of-pocket--not by IDW.

For fans, the comic is invaluable and does both the novel and the movie justice while offering strengths that are individual to the comic adaptation. It is a generally faithful retelling, obviously drawn and translated from the novel by people who truly cared about the story and the quality of the art. If you are fond of the novel, the movie or both, the graphic novel will be a welcome addition to your collection. Enjoy!

Amazon.com Review
Anne McCaffrey's Pern is one of the most memorable worlds in science fiction and fantasy. Humans and their flying dragon companions live in fear of thread, a caustic, deadly material that falls sporadically from space. But when the thread doesn't fall for a long time, people become complacent, forgetting that it is the brave dragonriders who can save them from the periodic threat. But when the thread falls, human and dragon heroes must fight the scourge. This edition encompasses the first three unforgettable novels of McCaffrey's epic series: Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon.

Dragonriders of Pern (Kindle Edition)
By Naulite
First, I'd like to say that I love these books. I re-read them ever couple years and it's a fresh story with new meaning each time. For me it's a timeless series.

I offer many thanks to Anne MaCaffery and her son Todd McCaffery who has picked up the reins of story telling with the Realms of Pern.

As for the Kindle Edition of this book, I am sorely disappointed in the typographical errors. In a time when we have simple spell checking on just about every application we use, it's depressing to see this digital media plagued with such inconsideration for the reader.

The spelling of the character names are misspelled, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph. There are major typographical mistakes in connection words that require the reader to read, and then re-read the entire sentence to discern the actual word intended as different words could change then entire feel and meaning of the sentence.

Paying roughly the same for this Kindle Edition as I would for a new mass-market paperback, I question why anyone would pay full price when a print copy can be acquired, used, at a faction of the cost.

The Kindle Edition is a sad disservice to the readers and fans of Anne McCaffery.

Del Rey and Random House Digital should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a poor quality product!!

EXCELLENT STORY, HORRIBLE EDITION
By Nathan
In The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey creates a stunning and richly detailed world. It's clear on reading these stories that they are very dear to McCaffrey's heart. Her blend of science, music and human drama are supported by a wholly believable mythology which bridges the gap between our earth and Pern.
Unfortunately, this edition was hastily thrown together without any regard for the author's hard work. On seemingly every page there are typographical errors so severe that McCaffrey's spell is broken. Character names constantly shift spelling. Words are misspelled, mixed up and changed to the point that the prose completely falls apart. At times geographic locations on Pern are switched with character names...this is a work of Science Fiction/Fantasy but when the place where you live starts talking all believability goes out the window. The sloppy editing of the edition was so bad I ended up buying individual copies of Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. I noticed none of the errors I saw in the three-in-one volume.
I highly recommend reading Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon, but save yourself the confusion and disappointment of this three-in-one edition. Buy each separately.

This is the first book I bought on my kindle and I was sorely disappointed in this version of the books. There were many errors in all three books and it left so many plots unexplained. I ended up buying the full versions of the original books and wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.

Amazon.com Review
In the now-classic novel Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice refreshed the archetypal vampire myth for a late-20th-century audience. The story is ostensibly a simple one: having suffered a tremendous personal loss, an 18th-century Louisiana plantation owner named Louis Pointe du Lac descends into an alcoholic stupor. At his emotional nadir, he is confronted by Lestat, a charismatic and powerful vampire who chooses Louis to be his fledgling. The two prey on innocents, give their "dark gift" to a young girl, and seek out others of their kind (notably the ancient vampire Armand) in Paris. But a summary of this story bypasses the central attractions of the novel. First and foremost, the method Rice chose to tell her tale--with Louis' first-person confession to a skeptical boy--transformed the vampire from a hideous predator into a highly sympathetic, seductive, and all-too-human figure. Second, by entering the experience of an immortal character, one raised with a deep Catholic faith, Rice was able to explore profound philosophical concerns--the nature of evil, the reality of death, and the limits of human perception--in ways not possible from the perspective of a more finite narrator.

While Rice has continued to investigate history, faith, and philosophy in subsequent Vampire novels (including The Vampire Lestat, The Queen of the Damned, The Tale of the Body Thief, Memnoch the Devil, and The Vampire Armand), Interview remains a treasured masterpiece. It is that rare work that blends a childlike fascination for the supernatural with a profound vision of the human condition. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Library Journal
Rice turned the vampire genre on its ear with this first novel (LJ 5/1/76), which evolved into one of the most popular series in recent history. Though the quality of the books has declined, this nonetheless is a marvelous, innovative, and literate tale of the longing for love and the search for redemption. This 20th-anniversary edition offers a trade-size paperback for a good price.

The exquisite classic that rejuvenated the vampire genre
By Daniel Jolley
With Interview With the Vampire, Anne Rice completely rejuvenated the genre which I feel to be horror's most important, primal, and soul-stirring, the legend of the vampire. I have described Richard Matheson's classic I Am Legend as the second greatest vampire novel, but I must retract that statement now. Only with a second reading have I recognized the unparalleled power, beauty, eroticism, and grace of Anne Rice's contribution to the subject. Unlike Matheson, Rice luxuriates in the Victorian appeal of Stoker's masterpiece, while taking the subject to planes far beyond those Stoker could have envisioned for his Count Dracula. The modern writer does not have to hide the vampire's erotic appeal behind convention, nor does she need to classify her subject as an evil in and of itself. The vampire nature of Rice's creation is a complex, unfathomable subject that transcends good and evil.
This first novel in The Vampire Chronicles centers around four very different yet almost equally fascinating vampires. The story is that of Louis, a wealthy eighteenth century Louisiana plantation owner who became a vampire in the depths of his despair over his brother's suicide. Lestat, the inscrutable force that hovers above every page of the tale, made Louis a vampire for basically economic reasons; he wanted the wealth that Louis possessed, but he also wanted a companion. Narcissistic and vain, the dapper Lestat does not teach his creation what it means to be a vampire, does not share the secrets he claims to know, does not even help Louis through the soul-shattering change that comes about when the body dies so that it may live eternally. Louis stays with Lestat only because, so far as he knows, there are no other vampires to whom he can turn for help and instruction. His distaste for Lestat grows over the years, however, and in order to keep Louis by his side, Lestat takes a young girl whom Louis had fed upon during a period of emotional turbulence and makes of her a vampire, knowing that Louis could never abandon the child. It is the story of Claudia, doomed to a most tragic life of immortality trapped inside the body of a little girl, that makes this book so powerful in my eyes. Lestat is of course fascinating, Louis is the epitome of tragedy and a fountain of knowledge by way of his questioning, eternally sad nature, but Claudia's story is an unbearably exquisite one. She accepts her vampire nature with some ease, being too young to really ever remember her human childhood, but the growth of Claudia the vampire woman inside the body of Claudia the child is a beautifully painful thing to watch. When she manages to separate Louis and herself from Lestat to go searching for other vampires in Central Europe and eventually Paris, giving dramatic voice to both her love for and hatred of Louis, the door to the dungeons of utter tragedy are thrown asunder. The introduction of the four hundred year old vampire Armand in the second half of the book gives us yet another unique vampire soul to ponder, but Armand at his most vivid pales in comparison to Claudia at her most unprepossessing.
In the end, we are left with Louis and his story, which is full of unanswerable questions. Even the meaning and lesson he tries to express about his miserable existence utterly fail in their influence it has upon the boy chosen to hear his extraordinary story. Literature really provides no better character study of the emotional meaning of vampirism than Louis, however. He became a creature of the night only out of despair, and his development as a new creature on earth proceeded without any instruction whatsoever from the cold Lestat. Thus, he questions everything about his new nature, desperately longing for a mentor. He does not relish the taking of human life, and the thought of creating another creature like himself is anathema to him. He sees vampirism as a curse, eternally wondering if he is indeed a child of Satan doomed to an immortal yet cursed life. The source of his moral suffering is his inability to really give up his human nature, and this causes him a long, long life of torment and pain. Never before had the moral, spiritual, and philosophical nature of the vampire been explored in such depth as that found in this exquisitely beautiful novel, and that is one of the primary reasons why it rivals Stoker in terms of its beauty and resonates with an emotionally hypnotic power that is unmatched in the long tradition of vampire literature.

One of my all-time favorites
By Latin Boy
Okay, so I was one of those kids in junior high school. You know the type: the teacher gives a reading assignment, and the kid does all he can within his power to be prepared without actually reading. Yeah, Cliff Notes, relying on others who actually read, Internet, etc...I was solidly one of those. Then in eleventh grade something life-changing happened.
There were several friends of mine passing around books like they were some sort of prized possessions. It was odd. Here I was avoiding reading like the plague, but their enthusiasm for reading was catching; it piqued my curiosity. I asked what they were reading, and one of my friends said, Anne Rice! Well, I folded and bought Interview with the Vampire.
WOW, I could not put the book down! I devoured it. I lived it. I breathed it. I had these burning, existential questions that would keep me up at night, and here I was reading conversations between Armand and Louis that hit on life, love, being, birth, death--all those questions that I wanted to ask of someone, some authority figure.
I don't want to go into plot details. I just want to share that this book affected me profoundly. One effect being that now you will rarely see me without a book in hand!

Fantastic Erotic Tale!
By A Customer
I first encounterd this book when I was 12 and in the library looking for something good to read. The title caught my eye and I checked it out and I'm glad I did! The story, as told from the point of view of the vampire Louis tells of the love/hate "family" relationship between Louis, his maker Lestat and their child Claudia. Louis is having a hard time dealing with the fact that he must kill in order to exsist (some call it whining, but I call it endearing). I read this book for the first time in a couple of days (it's that good) My favorite character in the entire vampire series is Louis. I know most people think that Lestat is the hero of this novel, but Interview is Louis' tale and I understand his point of view completely. He doesn't whine, Louis just wants a better understanding of what he is and how he should feel about that. I wish Ms. Rice would write novels featuring more of him because his character is so human and so beautifully written that I look for him FIRST in each new novel by her. Some have called it too homoerotic, but I happen to like this type of romance. It is obvious that Louis and Lestat both love and hate one another and it is this relationship that is the basis of the novel. If you have never read a book by Ms. Rice, let Interview With the Vampire be your first. But be warned, you'll get hooked!

Developing Talent in Young People
By Deborah Ruf, Ph.D.
Bloom's study helps those seriously interested in understanding the differences between different kinds of talent and it can be nurtured. The study describes how the nurturance of gifted athletes and musicians takes a different path than that of intellectually gifted young people. It points out that the families do not choose between the intellectual and athletic areas but follow the talents manifested by their children.
Apparently world-class talent becomes evident in the early years of performance and spurs on the efforts of family and youngster. In the cases of musical and physical talent, in this study it is concert pianists and Olympic swimmers, children show an intitial interest for practice and competition but go through a period of resistance before they make the talent area truly their own. Such youngsters do not succeed without the time and financial support of their families. Much, including regular schooling, needs to be sacrificed. The study concludes that eminent sculptors have a much less clearly defined or supported pathways to prominance.
Although the nurturance and support systems are similar for world-class athletes and musicians, the actual family environments differ considerably. The musicians experience a family environment more like that of the mathematicians and scientists in their youth.
Intellectual talent like that found in expert mathematicians and scientists also requires facilitation by the family. A particular point of interest is the generally overall high intelligence of these young people, and an unusually high degree of family cohesiveness. Few eminent mathematicians or scientists come from families of divorce.
Finally, the types of personalities vary by talent area and the book gives excellent case study examples.
I would give the book 5 stars if it gave more specific information on intellectual make-up of the study subjects or the groups under study.

Is Greatness Inherited or Developed?
By bill greene
Bloom's book lays out in great detail his hypothesis that great achievement is the result of training, coaching, and perserverence--not the result of genetic endowment. There has been a growing number of writers on the subject who agree with him--that a person's capabilities are not predetermined or fixed at birth but may be significantly shaped and developed by environment.

The author claims that there are very few predictors of a child's future success and great achievement can be "grown" by parents, coaches, schools, and constructive mentors and role models. Bloom's study looked at the childhoods of 120 success stories from several vocational fields and his findings showed no correlation between ultimate success and IQ in such fields as music, science, medicine, chess, and sports. What seemed to count for most of the successful individuals was the enthusiastic support of their family, early exposure to required chores, the development of a sound work ethic, lots of practice and determination, and coaching by devoted teachers.

One of the more interesting parts of this book is the explanation of how our brains and skills develop. Humans, it seems, are quite different from animals, and very different from ants and bees. While they are primarily predetermined by inborn instincts and coded behavior, humans arrive with a vast potential to develop as needed by whatever environment they encounter. It all has to do with something called myelin sheaths that insulate our nervous system and allow specific development of whichever parts of our body are exercised. Thus, our brains and hard wiring are able to grow stronger, just like your biceps, by intensive use, practice, and concerted effort. A newborn gazelle can stand up and flee the lion whereas a human infant is helpless--but years later the gazelle has learned nothing new, while the grown infant may graduate from MIT, discover a new vaccine, and pilot a jet plane.

The positive aspect of Bloom's findings is that it can be applied to helping children grow: They need a rich stimulating environment to fully develop, they require more hands-on experience and less coddling, they need positive feed-back and encouragement, and they must learn to apply themslves, to work hard, and develop self-reliance and determination. The author gives many interesting case studies of parents that provided such advantages for their children and details how they did it, and the time periods required to gain positive results.

The book also explains how current parenting and schooling practices frequently work counter to the ways they should. Children often get negative messages; allowed an over-extended childhood and adolescence that limits their growth, or are not forced to learn how to apply themselves to a task at hand. Such limited development can result in a growing number of "adult children" who have never fully grown up. And he faults teachers because they not only cannot predict which children will succeed, but give preference to those with the narrow set of capacity for memorization and test taking skills. Those so favored receive an "accumulative advantage" by getting special advancement and training even though others may have greater potential for numerous important vocations.

All in all, it is a very interesting and informative book. It can be read in pieces from time to time, and the chapters are all useful independent of each other. But taken as a whole, the book lays out the case for a different type of training needed for our kids, and reveals the large amount of "wasted talent" that comes from not recognizing the many new findings about how our brains and bodies develop.

Developing Talent in Young People
By Gary A
This is a great book and suitable for anyone working with children. Similar in nature, but preceeding Stephen Covey's work in 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book looks at common traits among talented young people across a multitude of disciplines. The USOC uses this work as a core fundamental in how coaches should work with kids. While this research and book was written in 1985, current research from Carol Dweck, PhD, and author of Mindset, supports the notion that the "talent" that we see is just a snapshot, a result, of a young persons true talent which is their self-motivated desire. As Bloom states, 100% of young high level performers had, at a young age, a parent, teacher or coach that GAVE them, (not forced on them) a desire for learning or a love of the game. This works in music, math, sports, or anything. You can't get to the top on talent alone! Desire, especially self-motivated desire, which leads to effort is the key! Read it and be transformed in how you work with children!

Murmurs of Earth: The Voyager Interstellar Record, by Carl Sagan

In 1977, two extraordinary spacecraft called Voyager were launched to the stars. Affixed to each Voyager craft was a gold-coated copped phonograph record as a message to possible extra-terrestrial civilizations that might encounter the spacecraft in some distant space and time. Each record contained 118 photographs of our planet; almost 90 minutes of the world's greatest music; an evolutionary audio essay on "The Sounds of Earth"; and greetings in almost sixty human languages (and one whale language). This book is an account, written by those chiefly responsible for the contents of the Voyager Record, of why they did it, how they selected the repertoire, and precisely what the record contains.

About the Author
Carl Sagan (1934-1996) was the Director of Cornell University’s Laboratory for Planetary Studies. He played a leading role in the American space program and was an adviser to NASA since its inception. He briefed the Apollo astronauts before their flights to the Moon, and was an experimenter on the Mariner, Viking, Voyager, and Galileo expeditions to the planets. He helped solve the mysteries of the high temperatures of Venus (answer: massive greenhouse effect), the seasonal changes on Mars (answer: windblown dust), and the reddish haze of Titan (answer: complex organic molecules). For his work, Dr. Sagan received the NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, and the Pulitzer Prize for The Dragons of Eden. His 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage won the Emmy and Peabody awards. The National Science Foundation declared that his “research transformed planetary science… his gifts to mankind were infinite.”

Through the darkness...
By FrKurt Messick
With recently announced initiatives directing us to space exploration once again, with the space shuttle again in orbit, and with the recent announcement of a tenth planet discovered, it is worthwhile to look back at a piece of history in the first great era of planetary exploration, whose heyday is arguably the journeys of Voyager I and Voyager II, the last great interplanetary probes to make a grand tour of several (in fact, most) of the planets in our solar system. Considering the difference in technology in our daily lives from the 1970s to the present, it is remarkable indeed that people were able to get such results and spectacular findings from spacecraft that by today's technical standards would be considered substandard and behind-the-times. Yet the Voyager spacecraft had more than just a tour of the home worlds in mind -- unlike most craft humankind has sent into space, these were not planned to return to earth, crash into an atmospher, or get locked into an everlasting orbit of the sun. These were intentionally sent out into interstellar space, beyond the confines of our solar system. One has to wonder, since it will be at least 40,000 years before these craft encounter even the next nearest star on their trajectories, and even if humanity is still around, the transmitters on the Voyager won't be functional -- why send them?

The answer is contained in the attachments to the spacecraft. Each of the two Voyagers was equipped with a record player of sorts (remember those?) and gold-plated copper disc of recordings, including greetings from earth. The recordings were quite remarkable at the time (again modern technology has far surpassed what is attached), including greetings in nearly 90% of current languages, extended greetings from the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the United States, a collection of representative photographs from around the world, and a sampling of music from around the world. These crafts were emissaries from the whole of the earth, and their messages reflected this.

The early chapters of 'Murmurs of Earth' recount the thinking that went into selection and elimination of material -- with very limited space, the selection had to be very intentional. Politics were avoided; this was a celebration of human existence and achievement, much as the Voyager spacecrafts were in and of themselves, and intended to outlast even the most enduring of nations, cultures and even languages. The authors include proposed lists of items that didn't make the final cut, as well as interesting discussion about why what was included made it. Sometimes, things were included by accident rather than design -- the original intention of the message team did not include messages from the UN Secretary-General or the President of the United States, but after Waldheim recorded a salutory message, the team felt they could not but include it (and felt it inappropriate to include the UN message without offering the President the same opportunity; after all, who was bearing the cost of the craft?).

In all, there were 118 pictures, all of which are included in this text, some in photoplates, but most in black-and-white depictions. Some photographs are stunning, and others somewhat silly, but all convey information for a purpose (for example, the photograph showing eating and drinking was a constructed photo by the team; the difficulties of depicting these tasks became apparent as they had to reshoot due to difficulties understanding the images). Most of the recording, however, is music -- music from different cultures around the world is included, from Bach to Louis Armstrong, from Javanese folk music to Chinese music to Stravinsky, music from every continent is included; however, dominant Western music carries the greatest representation, including in addition to Bach and Stravinsky the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and even Gregorian chant.

The record itself is interesting -- attached to the outside of the spacecraft, it had to be secured and protected from space damage; the construction and protection is such that micrometeorite damage should be kept to a minimum. The record's first side (facing in to the spacecraft) should have a 'shelf-life' of a billion years; the outside may sustain more damage, but should be 98% intact for many tens of thousands of years.

Sagan and his collaborators conclude by looking at the mission itself, the parameters, trajectories, and plans. This book was written prior to the Voyagers encounters with the outer planets, which went fairly smoothly, even lasting to Uranus and Neptune as a bonus not always expected. Sagan talks about the interstellar trajectory and likely star system encounters in the distant future. We'll never know where the craft end up, or if the people who discover it will be able to play the phonograph record (there are people on earth now who are technologically advanced who have lost the ability to work well with phonograph records!).

This is a piece of history as well as a piece of the future. It is a symbol of hope and positive outlook, and a great testament to the exploring and communicating efforts of humankind over the past several thousand years.

Garfield at Large, by Jim Davis

Like every great lasagna, Garfield was born in the kitchen of an Italian restaurant on a winter's night in 1978, while snow fell outside like grated parmesan cheese. He weighed five pounds, six ounces at birth--that's big for a kitten!--and right from the start showed a passion for Italian food. The restaurant owner, forced to choose between Garfield and closing his doors for lack of pasta, sold Garfield to a pet store. Garfield thought he was a goner until Jon Arbuckle walked in the door.

From the Publisher
The very first of all the Garfield titles. I remember what a thrill it was to find out that I would be working for the same company that produces the books which made me laugh since I was 13. It's in this first book that we discover Garfield, the plant eating, food loving (especially lasagna!), mailman terrorizing, furniture destroying, dog hating Red Tabby and his long suffering owner, Jon. Garfield's closest companion, Pooky the teddy bear, also appears, along with Lyman, the roommate and his dumb as a dead catfish dog, Odie. So, grab your Garfield slippers, pull up a chair and dive into some Garfield history!

About the Author
Jim Davis was born on July 28, 1945, in Marion, Indiana. He later attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he distinguished himself by earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university. (Incidentally, a fellow classmate named David Letterman earned the other). The Garfield strip was born on June 19, 1978, syndicated in forty-one U.S. newspapers. Today it’s syndicated in more than 2,100 newspapers worldwide with more than 200 million readers, leading Guinness World Records to name Garfield The Most Widely Syndicated Comic Strip in the World. Davis has had many successes with Garfield, including four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program and induction into the Licensing Hall of Fame (1998), but his most prized awards are from his peers in the National Cartoonist Society: Best Humor Strip (1981 and 1985), the Elzie Segar Award (1990), and the coveted Reuben Award (1990) for overall excellence in cartooning.

Still not "perfect" collections.
By Bert
This book:

Well, Paws decided to colourize the weekday strips for these new compilations and they look nice. I would have preferred it if they simply left them in black and white and had the Sunday strips in colour, though. The Sunday strips are the same as you would have seen in the newspaper or the "Garfield Treasuries". Except, the colour scheme is modified slightly (not a big deal) and they added the title block (the title "GARFIELD" rising out of the background, with Garfield lying down in front of it) which didn't exist until the early 1980s!

The later collections:

The problem is with the later collections. I noticed that some of these new colour collections which come after "Garfield at Large" have the funny front pages and end pages from the original collections moved around or missing entirely. This may have been a printing mistake, though.

Here is the big problem. The original black and white collections up to and including the sixteenth were missing the title and drop block from the Sunday strips. That is, the title block and the very first block of the strip. This didn't matter for the first few years as these didn't exist. A few years later, the title block mentioned in my first paragraph was introduced and the drop block simply showcased the four major characters, Garfield, Odie, Jon and Lyman. A little later, unique title blocks and drop blocks related to the strip's story were created.

Unfortunately, the new colour collections have the drop block REMOVED in the later collections, yet the unique title block is included. So the strips aren't complete, if you want to read the complete strips, I guess you have to visit the Garfield website.

Still, for the price, it's a great value. The books are printed on high quality paper as usual. Even the new colour "Fat Cat 3-Packs" are printed in higher quality paper instead of that awful "mass market paperback" paper they used to use for the older ones.

Large and in Charge
By Darien Summers
I've a lot of fond memories of this book. I read it multiple times when I was a kid, and I still find it very funny today as an adult. After "Calvin & Hobbes," this is my second favorite comic strip of all time. The book (and comic strip in general) is very funny, and a perfect complement to any coffee table.

The strips are about an overweight cat named, Garfield, who is lazy, sarcastic and mischievous as he constantly stirs up trouble and causes messes for his owner, Jon. My favorite strip in the book is a scene where Garfield and Jon are sitting on a bench in the park and Garfield keeps getting Jon into trouble by whistling at every girl that walks by. Each girl is accompanied by a big guy with bigger muscles. Jon claims to the guys that it's his cat that was whistling, but they don't believe him and end up punching Jon. Another classic strip in the book is when Garfield notices that Jon has a new sofa. Garfield doesn't like the sofa at first, but then he jumps up and down on it with his claws drawn until the sofa is all torn up. With a satisfied look on his face, Garfield relaxes on the sofa and says: "much better!"

I find that the biggest value that comes from this book is the ability to read it over and over again and still get a good thrill out of it every time. I hope you give the book a try.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.
