Just Not Funny
By Hal B
I was disappointed, and my wife was even more disappointed with this book. In fact, we didn't give it to our seven year old granddaughter. Humor is highly subjective. Because our granddaughter is going through a "tell a joke" stage we tried to put ourselves in her shoes. The jokes are either over her head, or silly.
Finding a good joke book for a child is not an easy thing to do. Sorry to say, this one fell flat.

The author chronicles the lives of three generations of Chinese men in America, woven from memory, myth and fact. Here's a storyteller's tale of what they endured in a strange new land.

About the Author
Maxine Hong Kingston is the daughter of Chinese immigrants who operated a gambling house in the 1940s, when Maxine was born, and then a laundry where Kingston and her brothers and sisters toiled long hours. Kingston graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1962 from the University of California at Berkeley, and, in the same year, married actor Earll Kingston, whom she had met in an English course. The couple has one son, Joseph, who was born in 1963. They were active in antiwar activities in Berkeley, but in 1967 the Kingstons headed for Japan to escape the increasing violence and drugs of the antiwar movement. They settled instead in Hawai‘i, where Kingston took various teaching posts. They returned to California seventeen years later, and Kingston resumed teaching writing at the University of California, Berkeley.

While in Hawai‘i, Kingston wrote her first two books. The Woman Warrior, her first book, was published in 1976 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award, making her a literary celebrity at age thirty-six. Her second book, China Men, earned the National Book Award. Still today, both books are widely taught in literature and other classes. Kingston has earned additional awards, including the PEN West Award for Fiction for Tripmaster Monkey, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and the National Humanities Medal, which was conferred by President Clinton, as well as the title “Living Treasure of Hawai‘i” bestowed by a Honolulu Buddhist church. Her most recent books include a collection of essays, Hawai‘i One Summer, and latest novel, The Fifth Book of Peace. Kingston is currently Senior Lecturer Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley.

Touching history. Not quite as good as China Women, but that's no reason not to read.

Interesting and humorous
By A Customer
I have to both praise and criticize this book. First of all, China Men is a story book revolving around history and includes historical details on the Chinese Americans. It vividly depicts the experiences of the Chinese Americans from 1840s to the World War II. It is particularly helpful for those who study Chinese immigration into America, and who are interested in Chinese Americans. Not only is it more enjoyable to read than a history book, it also provides deep insights into the feelings of the Chinese Americans, which could not be seen in ordinary history books that are merely loaded with details and facts. Yet, the book is confusing in parts and Maxine Hong Kingston seems to have shown some lack of understanding about the Chinese culture.
At the beginning, I had some trouble understanding the plot, because I did not realize that this book is divided into lots of short stories rather than one complete story. In the event, I thought it makes a lot more sense, and the book a lot more readable.
This is also a humorous book, and there are parts where I literally laughed. An example would be the sugar story, where the policeman had mistaken the word Sook-ah, meaning old man, for sugar. However, foreigners might miss the catch of humor.
It is easy to get mixed up with the different characters since many of the names were similar, such as Ah Goong, Say Goong, Kau Goong, Ngee Bak, Bak Sook Goong, Bak Goong and Sahm Goong. It would be a pity if some of the readers may get confused. Another thing is that the narrator seems to be the same person in every story, which adds to the confusion.
Although this is a fascinating book, Kingston did not seem to truly understand the Chinese culture. For example, she said that "Hong Kong people are more refined than us (Chinese from China) and don't say old lady for wife or old rooster for husband.". However, this is certainly not true, Hong Kong people today still use these old sayings. At least my parents do so.
Lastly, I would not recommend you to read this book, if you have no idea of what was going on in World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War. This is because the last story The Brother in Vietnam would seem very confusing and might make you frustrated. Also, a communist might feel disturbed by the satirization of communists, and how the communists were degraded.

China Men: An Inspiration to Listen
By Jennie Liu (jennie88@netvigator.com
China Men, is a captivating autobiography that is more than a history book: as her second novel, Maxine Hong Kingston captures historical fact, Chinese mythology and ethics and her personal family story blending these ingredients to create a novel that makes the reader think. Storytelling the experiences that her father, grandfather and other male relatives encountered in their individual travels to America, Kingston's lyrical and distinct style looks into the true story of Chinese immigration. Written in a very patriarchal voice, China Men describes the four generations of Kingston's family, their adventures in playing their part in different stages of the Chinese American story. Beginning with the mystery of her father's journeys to the "Gold Mountain", through to the great grandfather who built railroads, one of the great Chinese experiences, and ending with the story of her brother who was to fight for America: Kingston takes us into her families soul and leaves us with a sense of knowledge of how important it is to listen, not to neglect our history and to pass our stories on. The experiences of Kingston's father, the open ended explanations of his becoming a citizen was especially interesting, as his story was never truly clarified. This did not leave me confused, but instead the tragic and entertaining stories let me understand the difficulty and curiosity that is involved in understanding your personal past. Throughout the novel, there is connection to the character of the father; the author's ambition to understand her father and her history better: to bring the past to life. The fact that Kingston is a woman does not stop the continuity of the man's story. China Men deals with her families ever-changing view of where home is: never quite letting the reader into her own mind, I hope that is a story yet to come

Great read.

I have this book and Graham Arnold's Empire paperback which I bought in Sydney, Australia, back in the late 80's. They are wonderful keepsakes and go nicely with my collection. In fact, I wasn't going to buy Rinzlers' making of books as I already own these, but I decided to get them as well, in hardcover. I am looking forward to Jedi in October as well as Frames. I simply love the behind scenes machinations of the Star Wars saga, and as long as these wonderful books continue to be produced, I will buy them.

The Creator Of Thomas Covenant Adds Eight New Wonders To The World.

In his first collection of short fiction, the bestselling author of White Gold Wielder presents eight superb stories, including "Gilden-Fire," the famous "outtake" from Illearth War, and two brand new novellas written especially for this edition. Enter a world of mystics and unicorns, angels and kings -- all realized with the same dazzling style and imagination that has made Stephen R. Donaldson a modern master of the fantasy genre.

Daughter of Regals is a fantasy novella concerning a unique royal line and an unusual conception of magic.

The Conqueror Worm is a deliciously creepy "horror" piece in which havoc is wreaked by one lowly centipede.

Ser Visal's Tale begins as a simple story told over several flagons of wine at the local inn, this novella ends with a surprising twist.

Gilden-Fire is the famous chapter about Korik of the Bloodguard and his mission to Seareach that was part of the original manuscript of The Illearth War, but omitted from the published version.

This is an incredible collection. I'm not eloquent enough to do it justice in a review. All of the stories are strong, and they are diverse enough to show that Donaldson, known mostly for his Thomas Covenant series, is no one-trick pony. The title story is especially powerful. Also worth buying is his collection "Reeve the Just and other stories."

Eight stories, no two in the same setting
By Michele L. Worley
"Daughter of Regals" - Magic, in this land, is the art of manipulating images of the Real: the Wood of the Ash tree, Wind, the Fire deep in the earth, or images of Real creatures: the Basilisk, the Wyvern, the Phoenix. Such magic is inherited by those who descend from some Real man or woman: someone who can shapechange into a Real creature. The Regals who unified the three kingdoms of Canna, Nabal, and Loden into an uneasy realm are such people. Now Chrysalis, on this night of her 21st birthday, must ascend to the Seat in full view of the realm's nobles and take her Real shape and her place as Regal, or watch the Realm shatter. And she alone knows that she's already failed once. (Excellent story, taking place in the single night that will mark Chrysalis' ascension, death, or flight, told by her.)

"Gilden-Fire" - This tale of Korik of the Bloodguard and the mission to the Giants of Seareach was cut from THE ILLEARTH WAR, not because the sequence isn't good, but because 1) Donaldson needed to cut about 150 pages, and 2) using Korik as the viewpoint character caused problems when set beside Covenant's Unbelief. Enjoy; Korik fills in some of the background of the Bloodguard as lagniappe.

"Mythological Beast" - Norman lives a perfectly sane, perfectly safe life as a librarian, in an age when violence has been eliminated by eliminating the causes of fear. Not that many people can read, or that anyone uses the library. He can't understand why the new nub of horn on his forehead doesn't register as anything odd on his biomitter, or why nobody seems surprised by his other gradual changes.

"The Lady in White" - The narrator, Mardik the blacksmith, tells the tale of how his 'mad' dreamer of a younger brother came to be blinded, in rescuing him from the mysterious Lady in White, who had lured many men to their deaths in the Deep Forest.

"Animal Lover" - The narrator is a cyborg government agent, for whom serious injury just means a few more experiments with new equipment. In this age of overpopulation, genetic engineering is outlawed, and the government subsidizes anything that'll act as a pressure valve: slamming cars around a racetrack, game preserves. But the exclusive game preserve the agent's asked to investigate has a *far* higher death rate than normal, and seems to advertise only by word of mouth. The narrator's the best pick, since he'll be inclined to root for the animals rather than slant his report the other way, if no criminal activity is going on.

"Unworthy of the Angel" - The title comes from the saying, Let no man be unworthy of the Angel who stands over him. The narrator, a guardian angel (literally) whose memory of each assignment is wiped away by the next, has the unsavory task of coping with a charge who's selling his soul to become a better sculptor. This isn't a blatant diabolical contract in brimstone, nothing so crude; the sculptor just has to be willfully blind to the consequences of his actions. But an angel can't help you unless you give him permission...

"The Conqueror Worm" - Welcome to the not-quite-right home of Creel and Vi Sump. He's got a good job, but maybe a dead end; the place has some expensive electronics, but a water-damaged ceiling; and so on. Tonight, a centipede is loose in the apartment after they've both been drinking at a party, and they're trying to kill it. (More of a character study than anything; the only story in the collection that's not to my taste.)

"Ser Visal's Tale" - Some of the wild young men of the town regularly buy Ser Visal's drinks at the tavern with the deaf bartender, to hear tales that, while not quite openly heretical or seditious, wouldn't help him any with the Judica or the King. Now they want to know the *real* story of Dom Perralt's excommunication, in this land that's become a theocracy in one generation.

LOVE IT!
By Kimberly
I LOVED the book! I like all of them though my favorites happen to be Daughter of Regals, Ser Visal's Tale and The Conquerer Worm. But I liked Unworthy of Angel and Mythological Beast a lot too. Overall, just read the book. I found them all interesting (except Animal Lover, which I didn't read yet hehe) and there's something for everybody.
The Conquerer Worm isn't really a fantasy or sci-fi story at all- it's the shortest (I think) and it shows how much trouble a centipede causes. It has a psycological "creepiness" abput it and I loved it. It is more about developing the characters than anything.
I LOVED Daughter of Regals because of the complex storyline and all the twists it has.
Ser Visal's tale has an unexpected ending- tho it took me a few minutes to realize it. I was like *GASP*. I found that telling the story through a storyteller was interesting.
Gilden-Fire is great because I loved Thomas Covenant and it ties in some info about the bloodguard that is not in The Illearth War. Great read but might be a little confusing for anyone who didn't read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever.

Thalassa was a paradise above the earth. Its beauty and vast resources seduce its inhabitants into a feeling of perfection. But then the Magellan arrives, carrying with it one million refugees from the last mad days of earth. Paradise looks indeed lost....

Just a few islands in a planetwide ocean, Thalassa was a veritable paradise- home to one of the small colonies founded centuries before by robot Mother Ships when the Sun had gone nova and mankind had fled Earth.

Some of Clarke's best later work
By Eric San Juan
"The Songs of Distant Earth" is an engaging story centered around one of Arthur C. Clarke's deceptively simply plot hooks: Prior to the destruction of the Earth in a nova 1,500 years from now, "seedships" were sent to the stars so humanity could live on. An early seedship birthed a small, Eden-like civilization on a planet called Thalassa.
Now, hundreds of years after this society achieved near perfection, another seedship has arrived. And it is carrying people who have come directly from the now destroyed Earth.
Like most of Clarke's work, "The Songs of Distant Earth" is a story driven by ideas. Ideas about how the future of humanity will turn out. Ideas about how we will eventually solve the problems of today. And ideas about how we will finally reach the stars, and what we'll do when we get there.
Unlike much of his later work, "Songs" holds up well. This is not only the best of his late-period writing, but falls in with the very best novels he has written no matter the era. The pacing is quick, with a new revelation or theory around every corner, luring the reader deeper into the story with short, pithy chapters, each revealing a small (but fascinating) part of an intricate whole.
Most of the classic Clarke hallmarks are here, including the handful of themes that grew to dominate his later works. The space elevator, the possibly intelligent yet wholly alien lifeform, the theories on how humans will cross the gulf between the stars, and the diatribes against religion.
The cast of characters is not huge, but he rotates the viewpoint from chapter to chapter between about half-a-dozen of the people. The variety is good, as subtlety in painting his characters has never been a Clarke strong suit.
As mentioned, "Songs" is driven by ideas. The first third of the book, maybe even the first half, is a never-ending stream of theories and predictions and discoveries. One of the author's great strengths is his ability to easily yet convincingly paint a picture of mankind's future. What takes other authors chapter after chapter to flesh out Clarke manages in small and succinct bites.
This book is heavy with the hallmarks of later Clarke. Those of a strongly conservative philosophy may be uncomfortable with some of Clarke's blunt thoughts on matters like religion, guns and sexuality.
Like all of his later works, the book is permeated with Clarke's disdain for organized religion (save his soft spot for Buddhism). Sometimes he is subtle, sometimes not; here, one entire chapter is devoted to one character's monologue about why religion is The Great Evil.
And Clarke does not limit the anti-religious sentiments to his characters; he openly debases the entire concept of God in the narrator's voice on several occasions. It's somewhat jarring to have the author's philosophy pushed in the voice of the narrator rather than through a character. Of course, Clarke readers should not be surprised by this, as it has been a running theme in his stories for years.
The inclusion of one specific passage on another subject, however, is puzzling, as it serves no purpose to the story and seems only to have been included for Clarke to expose a political viewpoint. Clarke uses the irrelevant scene to espouse his view that gun ownership is a "perversion," notes that the character has stirrings in his loins when holding the gun, and passes the gun off as a phallic symbol. The gun never comes into play again. A puzzling and an unnecessary intrusion of politics.
Also like later Clarke, the author runs with the presumption that everyone is somewhat bisexual. At one point, he indicates that in the future people who are 100 percent heterosexual are considered flawed and borderline psychotic. The author isn't always so heavy-handed, however, and his frank but not in-your-face treatment of the subject is almost refreshing in its casualness.
None of this should serve to ruin the story even for those who lean to the right, because like Arthur C. Clarke at his best, he lays out a possible future and how we got there with almost flawless execution. Only once or twice does his handling of political and social issues feel heavy-handed.
Also like Clarke at his best, he lures the reader along with hints of discovery at every turn; discovery, not preaching, drives the story. This is best reflected in the discovery of a life form indigenous to Thalassa. Clarke's revelations about them are spaced evenly throughout the novel - the better to lure you along - and walk that fine balance between telling you enough to keep you interested but not so much that your imagination is spoiled.
Because Clarke's stories generally don't hitch on some raging conflict or objective-based scenario, this one included, the ending may seem anti-climatic. Plot threads introduced midway through the book that look as if they will heat up are resolved well before the end. But that is Clarke. He presents an idea, a snapshot of the future, serves up a slice and gets out before the idea wears itself thin. That is a great strength of his work.
All in all, "The Songs of Distant Earth" stands as one of Clarke's best novels, surpassed only by his true classics. It is certainly the very best of his later work. No Arthur C. Clarke fan should go without reading this one, and probably neither should any fan of the genre.

Beautifully written and very imaginative.
By Roger J. Buffington
This is a book that you will likely not forget reading. Clarke's imagination here is staggering.
The novel takes place several thousand years from now. Earth has been destroyed by an unstable sun. Mankind foresaw the nova of Earth's sun for about two thousand years, and mounted an effort to colonize nearby stars in order to save the species. This was done in the nick of time.
The story takes place on planet Thalassa--a world largely of oceans with a single pair of islands perhaps the size of Taiwan. The Thalassans, originally colonists from Earth, have been alone for over a thousand years. Now they are visited by the last starship from Earth, which stops there en route to a different planet intended for colonization.
The story deals with the clash of cultures, but the best part are the flashbacks to Earth, and Clarke's highly intelligent and plausible extrapolations as regards science, politics, and societal development. Clarke's prose is outstanding as well, which is not all that common in science fiction. This is, quite simply, a wonderful story which will strike a chord in most readers.

Haunting, Sad, and Beautiful.
By Gerald J. Nora
Arthur C. Clarke is in fine form with this book about humanity after the death of Earth, burnt up by the Sun. Many colonies were started on other planets, and Thalassa was one of the later ones sent out before the Sun blew up. Thalassa is a quiet utopia, with the citizenry leading uneventful lives on their ocean world. This peace is shaken when the starship Magellan comes into their system, containing thousands of humans who were the last to leave the Solar System before the Sun blew up. Unlike the Thalassans, who grew up untroubled by the tensions and violence of Earth, the Magellan crew has fresh memories of the last violent days of Earth and still grieve for their home and loved ones; they remember religion, which was supressed on Thalassa to avoid religious strife; they remember tragedy. Clarke's book is a sensitive telling of what happens when the Thalassans are exposed to the last human survivors of Earth, and how those survivors are touched by the tranquillity of Thalassa. Clarke shows you love, remembrance, and tragedy infused with Clarke's sense of wonder.

Interesting ideas but very poorly written.
By Daniel Kauwe
I had fond memories of this series from high school, which is why I tracked it down to read it again.

However, it has been several decades and I now find that while the overall story is still really interesting and quite unique, the author really is a terrible writer.

On one hand I'd recommend the series because it has a lot of interesting ideas, but on the other hand, I have to admit that the writing is atrocious. In fact the author has some of the worst prose I've ever seen, plus much of the "science" might have been believable when the book was written (roughly 40 years ago) but now the technological descriptions are not just archaic- they're mostly laughable.

Ultimately, I have to say that since this is a four book series, even though there are lots of fascinating and unique concepts, you'd have to wade through hundreds of pages of abysmal prose that will probably leave you cringing...so probably pass on this.

I would love this on kindle.
By Amazon Customer
I read this series while I was stuck in a hotel room in KL Malaysia. The central market was nearby and they had a used book store there. I read the first one in the series and I was hooked. I tore that bookstore apart trying to find the others. I want to read it again. I hope they publish it in ebook formats soon.

Definitely good reading
By jupiter
It took me a while to get into the first book but once I read it I wanted to read all the remaining book in the series. It took me a while to track all four of them down. NOw I can't put it down. Definitely kept me interested the whole time. I took it on my trip to London and during the 9 hrs flight time I only got up once to use the restroom. I was totally hooked. The characters are starting to develop more and become more likeable.

Healing Touch of God
By June S.
This difficult to find Agnes Sanford book is a total treasure...I read and reread and mark...

Each time I open this book I find more gems of wisdom and insight.

It is a book that every pastor in this country should read...and reread...

Agnes has been maligned on the internet by someone who didn't know her. I did.

When i read that totally false accusation about Agnes Sanford I passionately wished that I could find that person and set that person straight.

It is a sin to malign someone of her caliber when she is dead and no longer able to defend herself.

I would be afraid to say these things about this total servant of Jesus.

I doubt that Agnes would confront this person if she were living.

Agnes Sanford was highly respected in the Episcopal Church...and still is.

Her works have been credited by the Lutheran pastor who has written healing instructions for the Lutheran church..."Reclaim!" (Reclaim the lost 400 years when healing was not part of the doctrine of the Lutheran Church.)

Agnes and her husband started the Pastoral Schools of Care....which has been a blessing to so many pastors.

More than that...the Lord healed countless people through Agnes Sanford

I have studied so many many religions...for long periods of time...even while I knew Agnes.

Agnes did not interfere. She prayed for me...and those prayers saved me from something very dangerous.

Agnes never took any credit for healing...never. She was a channel used by the Lord and said so.

In the end I started reading her works after she was dead and I retired. I am constantly amazed at the way she so clearly and beautiful expresses her wisdom...her God-given Wisdom.

How I regret the long delay...and how totally wonderful this heritage of the works which she has left behind.

If you are serious about healing...I think you will totally agree with me about the writings of Agnes Sanford.

Like many progressive Christians
By Earthian
What a gem of a book. Mrs. Sanford delivers the goods of mind, body, and Spirit in no uncertain terms. Like many progressive Christians, myself included, one turns page after page of enlightening verse as the author struggles with orthodox theology that seeks to make God into a harsh judge that punishes the innocent and creates existential angst for good, honest people, who are in pain over circumstances that their lives did not warrant or invite.

Agnes writes in the same vein as Rabbi Harold Kushner author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People. She brings healing and warmth in her verse and understanding of God. God only desires our good: in other words, God is not looking to strike you down and punish you or trammel your Soul. God is Love! And love heals and restores.

Mrs Sanford spent her entire adulthood searching the Gospel Narratives seeking the key to healing and love and her many books - including this one -- are exemplars for understanding and using profitably healing prayer to uplift and care for those in pain.

Mrs Sanford provides a road map for any Christian who seeks to use prayer in their personal or ministerial careers. She provides the methods of prayer and fortifies 'faith' in a special way that is easy to understand. Her practical, common sense approach to prayer cuts through orthodoxy gone bad, and reminds us that Christianity is first and foremost a religion that seeks to heal the broken hearted, downtrodden, and marginalized who have been excluded and forgotten by modern religion gone haywire.

Agnes was a trailblazer who brought back to Christianity its core values much like other contemporaries of her time who resurrected healing prayer. It is not surprising then, that healing prayer is gaining new momentum in our own time thanks to her many books, and unshakable faith.

If healing prayer can open your mind and call you to deeper union with Jesus Christ to work on behalf of others in need, you life may never be the same again.

Agnes Sanford was a brilliant presenter of healing teachings. She kept her presentation simple, yet delved into deep places. I've read three of her books so far.

This Adventure~Prayer~So Simple
By Charisse Carrigan
All of my Christian walk I've known about prayer; been a part of prayer-chains, prayed when I didn't know what else to do, and have even experienced answers to prayer. Deep in my heart I've always felt that there was something more. At times, I'd wonder, why pray if God is going to carry out His will anyway? How does prayer work or change anything? This book by Catherine Marshall was an answer to those cries of my heart. She has a gift in making things easy to read. Bringing our lofty ideas back to the simplicity of asking our Father for help. To be able to lay my heart, my desires, and even fears or frustrations out before Him and to know I'm not going to be turned away. That is what this book has done for me. In times past, when struggling, I may have even scorned the simplicity or prayer, but now because of Catherine's insight, it's that very humble simplicity I can see that I've needed all along. Does your son or daughter share with you their hopes, dreams and fears? Do they come to you when their struggling, and today they can't seem to keep their shoes tied? Are they older, do they ask for your opinion on which job they should take, or what kind of insurance should they get? Would you try to lead them astray or give them bad advice? Of course not! And that is part of the beauty of what Catherine Marshall has written here. She shows us how we being imperfect still desire to give our children our very best, how much more so, does our God, our creator, our Father want to give us that which is good for us and will bring Him glory. Her book, Adventures in Prayer, has helped me to see the cynical place my heart had come to concerning prayer. This book has rekindled a passion in me to draw near to my Lord again. And to know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that each time I come to Him in prayer, it's because I know He was pursuing me, wooing me, calling me to have communion with Him. How simple! How wonderful! That is why I've come to Amazon to order this book for several friends. When I shared with them some parts of this book, they immediately wanted to get the book. We have searched many book stores and Amazon is one of the only places I can find it available anymore. Thank you~

Great book of prayer
By Kristi Cain
This is one of the most helpful books on prayer I have ever read. Catherine Marshall demonstrates the magnificent simplicity of prayer and shares with her readers the truth in how to engage in several types of prayer including The prayer of Helplessness, The Waiting Prayer, and The Prayer That Helps Your Dreams Come True. Don't let the outdated cover deter you. It's as relevant as ever!

Awesome!
By Dr. W. G. Covington, Jr.
Catherine Marshall's legacy is rich and full. She left us so much wisdom on the permanent things. Her prayer journals and other writers are those of a serious inquirer. She never claimed to have all the answers. Some of her questions remained unanswered in her personal life. But she also discovered some profound spiritual insights on her journey. Fortunately for us she put what she discovered in writing.
This book equates prayer with adventure. When reading it you will see why. It convinces you of the practicality of prayer.
God is the source of creativity, goodness, wisdom, and every other positive imaginable (and even unimaginable). This book helps one to realize the way to connect with that Source is through prayer in Jesus' name.

ONE OF THE FOUNDING BOOKS OF THE "NUTRITION REVOLUTION"
By Steven H Propp
Frances Moore Lappé (born 1944) is the founder of the Institute for Food and Development Policy (Food First) and the Small Planet Institute, as well as the author of books such as Hope's Edge: The Next Diet for a Small Planet, Democracy's Edge: Choosing to Save Our Country by Bringing Democracy to Life, etc. This book was first published in 1971. (NOTE: Page numbers below are for the 498-page 1982 10th Anniversary Edition.)

She explains in the first chapter, "In 1969 I discovered that half of our harvested acreage went to feed livestock. At the same time, I learned that ... it takes 16 pounds of grain and soybeans to produce just 1 pound of beef in the United States today. The final blow was discovering that much of what I had grown up believing about a healthy diet was false... Americans eat twice the protein our bodies can even use..." (Pg. 9) She added, "While most Americans believe our grain exports 'feed a hungry world,' TWO-THIRDS of our agricultural exports actually go to livestock---and the hungry abroad cannot afford meat." (Pg. 11)

She states, "for me the message of [the book] is abundance, not scarcity. The issue is how we use that abundance. Do we expand the kind of production which degrades the soil and water resources on which all our future food security rests?... The answers lie in the political and economic order we create. The 'small planet' image should simply remind us that what we eat helps determine whether our planet IS too small or whether its abundance can be sustained and enjoyed by everyone. My book might better be called 'Diet for an Abundant Planet'..." (Pg. 12)

She elaborates, "questions about the roots of needless hunger had to focus not on the simple physical limits of the earth, but on the economic and political forces that determine what is planted and who eats... the experts' single-minded focus on greater production as the solution to world hunger was wrongheaded. You could have more food and still more hunger." (Pg. 21)

Later, she adds, "The first edition of this book explained how our production system takes abundant grain, which hungry people can't afford, and shrinks it into meat, which better-off people will pay for. But I didn't fully appreciate that our production system not only reduces abundance but actually mines the very resources on which our future food security rests." (Pg. 65) She suggests, "The solution can be found only by addressing the issue of power... Democracy must be the process of moving toward genuine democracy, understood as the ever more just sharing of political and economic power." (Pg. 112)

Perhaps surprisingly, however, she states, "I am not a vegetarian. Over the last ten years I've hardly ever served or eaten meat, but I try hard to distinguish what I advocate from what people think of as 'vegetarianism.' ... what I advocate is the return to the traditional diet on which our bodies evolved... centered on plant foods, with animal foods playing a supplementary role." (Pg. 13)

This book is essential reading for progressives, ecologically-minded people, vegetarians/vegans, and lots of other people.

A Bit Outdated
By MikiClements
The recipes have a lot of soy and peanuts. I was reading some research that peanuts tend to collect mold and not good to eat as a part of a healthy diet when treating cancer. Soy tends to absorb pesticides. These recipes don't work for us at all. It's also a bit too preachy for me.
