From Library Journal
Author Smith was general manager for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) which provided astounding special effects for the sf/horror films of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, beginning with Star Wars. This book is something of a puff-piece for the renowned company (and a panegyric to Lucas) and includes a history of the company, profiles of its artists and technicians, and solid explanations of the various techniques, from animation to matte painting to models. The writing is competent but repetitious. However, the volume has been designed as a fan-oriented, large-format tome, and it is lavishly illustrated with excellent color visuals. The filmography of ILM work includes each film's poster, a nice touch. David Bartholomew, NYPL

Well presented and clearly written explanation of specialfx
By Donal Fenlon
Thomas Smith was general manager of Industrial Light and Magic a year before he came to write this impressive book. The book is centred around the film special effects creations of ILM between 1975 and 1985. This includes the then "Star Wars" trilogy, two Indiana Jones movies and other lesser known projects. For the Star Wars fan theres plenty to learn about one of your favourite movies. This book is lavishly illustrated with full colour photos including triple page or gatefold images. The focus though is on how the effects are done and who did them at ILM. From the art work in developing concepts of storylines, through modelling, creature creation, the actual filming methods and matte image creation to the finishing touches of animation and optical compositing this book gives a gradual demonstration of the work of a special effects company. For someone with no knowledge what so ever of special effects this is a good introduction and to those involved it must be fascinating as well. As Thomas Smith points out, while film fans still love the movies from this era (1975-85), movie goers constantly seek new visions on screen. The digital era has brought movies like Toy Story etc but these were just figments of imagination at the writing of this book so its worth noting Thomas Smith's far-sightedness in the final chapter on digitized movies. The format of the book is to take each department of the special effects process and show what it does and where its part comes in the crafting of a movie. In each chapter there are short biographies of the leading people in each area of effects, this is a nice touch as it can serve as guide for those interested in getting involved. Its worth noting, many of those profiled have a long interest in their specialty going back to their youth and through the various twists and turns of working in an industry knew of other members of the ILM company before actually joining this now esteemed organisation. Thomas Smith by no means is setting out to sell ILM's considerable expertise though he tells the story of a company making dreams into reality, itself moving from an idea to a serious business proposition. (As a final note another book on movies of this period Paul Sammons "Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner" contains insightful descriptions about the crafting of a movie not least its special effects.)

Behind the Scenes, Behind the Magic
By Mark Hills
No one would ever have guessed that when Industrial Light & Magic opened its doors in Maren County that day way back in 1975 that they would produce the standard by which other special effects and other effects houses would be judged. ILM has formed the cornerstone of LucasFilm Ltd. a company that has spawned more spin-offs such as THX Sound, Skywalker Sound, all held neatly under the Lucas Digitial banner. Back in the days of Star Wars it was mostly using what was already known, and inventing everything else. ILM has been at the forefront ever since, from the early days of motion control cameras controlled by Apple computers the latest CG marvel like Galaxy Quest, Phantom Menace or Mission to Mars.
The Art of Special Effects deals more with the older films-those before 1986, illustrating a time when computers were not so large a part in the film-making process. It gives the reader a great look at the sheer amount of detail that went into the models, the props, costumes from Star Wars to Explorers, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to the some of the Star Trek films, ILM constantly and consistently proven to innovative. The book as a whole is on a level lower than, say, Cinefex magazine, assuming that the reader doesn't know how blue screening and rotoscoping works or how miniatures are lensed. It is light reading without getting itself bogged down in too much technicality, for those who want that, read Cinefex.
It also strikes me that this book is also best at presenting a dying era. A time when model makers kit bashed hundreds of plastic models just to build a Super Star Destroyer - few companies bother with that any more when everything can be rendered on a Silicon Graphics box and Maya and Soft Image software. Such films as Star Trek: Insurrection used few practical models and a completely CG Enterprise-E. The time of the supremely detailed, hand crafted model or set may be at an end, and I think the industry will be sadder for it. Partially because when I read Cinefex, a lot of what I see is the same-different movie, different space ship, but they're all rendered the same way and most use the same software, with only minor modifications or original code going into it to get a certain look or solve a certain problem.
I suspect the Digital Realm of the movies, while producing better special effects, lacks the mystique of knowing that several people labored for months to build that model. That instead it was modeled by a few people over a period of a week. (Though it should be noted that a lot of films, including the Phantom Menace, used practical models). I suspect their days are number.

From Publishers Weekly
For the first time using a man as her protagonist, Bradford gives us a cliched love story nearly indistinguishable from her previous ( A Woman of Substance ) hefty novels. Tycoon Maximilian West, workaholic founder of a multinational financial empire, is endowed with "personal magnetism," "fatal charm," "charisma" and "presence" but is emotionally obtuse with the women who adore him. Born Maxim Wertheim in Berlin, he is brought to London in 1939 by his loving nursemaid; his parents die in concentration camps. Forging a brilliant business career, he marries a glamorous Frenchwoman, eventually losing her to the demands of his career; two more wives and assorted mistresses fail to bring him happiness. In one of the clunkier epiphanies in commercial novels, he finally understands the reason for his increasing anomie, and, not to our surprise, wins the woman of his heart. Bradford is more adept at describing opulent furniture, clothing and food, and in providing capsule tours of posh neighborhoods in London, New York, Berlin, Paris, Venice and Morocco than she is in delineating the personalities of her characters, whose insights about themselves and others are so superficial as to verge on the ludicrous. But her legions of readers undoubtedly will be satisfied by the romantic fortunes of the cultured, wealthy and powerful people whose lives she evokes with lavish sentiment. BOMC selection.

Barbara Cartland is a wonderful author. I absolutely loved A Woman of Substance
By MCDomovitch
Barbara Cartland is a wonderful author. I absolutely loved A Woman of Substance. After that one, all others sort of pale. But that is to be expected. The success she enjoyed from that phenomenal novel would be impossible to replicate. That would be like somebody twice winning a Pulitzer prize.
Having said that, if my expectation had not been so very high, I would have been over the moon with this novel. She is still better than just about anybody writing sagas.

Dark is the Sun, by Philip Jose Farmer

An epic adventure by the author of the award-winning Riverworld series.

Fifteen billion years from now, Earth is a dying planet, its skies darkened by the ashes of burned-out galaxies, its molten core long cooled. The sunless planet is nearing the day of final gravitational collapse in the surrounding galaxy. Mutations and evolution have led to a great disparity of life-forms, while civilization has resorted to the primitive.

Young Deyv of the Turtle Tribe knew nothing of his world's history or its fate. He lived only to track down the wretched Yawtl who had stolen his precious Soul Egg. Joined by other victims of the same thief--the feisty Vana and the plant-man Sloosh--the group sets off across a nightmare landscape of monster-haunted jungle and wetland. Their search leads them ultimately to the jeweled wasteland of the Shemibob, an ageless being from another star who knows Earth's end is near and holds the only key to escape.

About the Author
PHILIP JOSE FARMER (1918-2009) was an American science fiction author, the winner of three Hugo Awards, and is best known for his Riverworld series.

From AudioFile
Earth's sun is gone, and the planet is on the verge of collapse. Deyv, of the Turtle Tribe, has lost his Soul Egg to the Yawtl. He sets off in search of the thief with others in the same predicament. They end up in company of Shemibob, an ageless being from another star, whose inhabitants hope to help humans escape to a new universe. Rebecca Rogers suffuses her narration with an undercurrent of foreboding that becomes a bit monotonous. When there's true danger, the intensity is too familiar to have the desired effect. A slight modulation of tone for the narration of more ordinary events would reserve the air of tension for events that warrant heightened suspense. J.E.M. © AudioFile 2010, Portland, Maine

A Cracking Good Read....
By Rory McLeish
I first got hold of this book back in 1982 (or thereabouts), and I loved it straight off the bat. It knocked Ringworld off the top of my All Time Favourite Books list. Great extrapolations, great characters (characters you really get to care about, even though some of them are pretty, er, "out there"), and some great solid adventures. I was at art school in Glasgow at the time, and found Dark Is The Sun such a great source of well defined, richly described people (and non-people), I picked it as a college project to illustrate the cover of the book and depict the main characters. Great fun. If you read and rate good SF and you haven't read this novel, buy it NOW!
PS: Never, EVER lend your books. I had a hardback first edition, sigh...

Farmer does it again!
By A Customer
Farmer is the best science fiction author of all time and this book is a truly wonderful read!Definitely a book to read more than once, it is rich with adventure, excitement, and deep thought provoking philosophy. Imaging living in a far away future time when the earth is dying as the sun burns out. Society has become primitive again. There are great ideas in this book which is what one expects from Farmer, who has the most brilliant and original imagination ever.If you have ever read "to your scattered bodies go" or "maker of universes" then you will know what I am rambling on about.

Classic
By A Customer
This really deserves to be listed in the best sci-fi of all time. The story is miles wide, delving into a range of ideas that leave you gasping for more. If you want to read something intelligent that has perspectives you've not come across before, and I mean REALLY new, then you cannot afford to pass up any opportunity to read this book. I've read it many times, and I don't let people borrow it (which really annoys them, because I constantly tell them how brilliant it is). Read this book. Read it again. And again. I envy you your first trip through the pages.

Fun, Interactive Reading Experience
By Comix
Long before online POV role playing we had Dungeons & Dragons tabletop gaming and Find Your Fate books ! The idea is simple but brilliant. Basically, you read a story about a character that is you. As the story progresses, you are asked to make decisions, some as simple as which direction to go and others as perilous as who to engage in combat. Based on your decision, you are told to flip forward to a designated page to continue reading. As a kid I loved the idea that I controlled my characters actions and every time I read the book I could make the story different. There are a few dead end choices (i.e. your character is killed) but most of the time you have an opportunity to correct your mistakes although it takes you on a longer and usually more dangerous path. The fun part is there is no one correct path but several possibilities to succeed as well as fail.
Now the best part, although Find Your Fate books came in a variety of licenses (Indiana Jones for one) and generic adventure environments (jungles, space, undersea) this one is part of a series based in the GI Joe universe !! What boy growing up in the eighties didn't want to be a Joe ? To literally "Live the adventure !" In each volume you are a new Joe with your own unique codename. So rather than being Duke or Snake Eyes, you get to be yourself as a Joe agent and work alongside and against your favorite characters.
Face off against Destro, Major Bludd, The Baroness and even Cobra Commander himself. One book in the series even includes Serpentor !
Even in my adult years I find these books to be entertaining and not nearly as predictable as you would suspect. Used or new, it's worth it for the content. Great, nostalgic fun !

Chapter One

It wasn’t your ordinary dime store synthetic satin groundbreaking ribbon. This was real French satin ribbon, specially ordered by Amelia Coleman Assante and trimmed with a half inch of Spanish lace. Yards of the opulent ribbon festooned the sequined pylons that were manned by a pair of handsome guards wearing well-fitted cobalt-blue uniforms. The shears, while not overly large for such a momentous occasion, were solid gold. “Nothing but the best for this opening,” Amelia cooed to her husband. “The crowd expects it. Smile, darling. We’re going live.” Cary Assante looked up at the tiny figure standing on top of Assante Towers. He watched as one of the cameramen signalled to the commentator who waited on top of the building.

“This is Dave Harrison of KBT Eyewitness News reporting to you live from atop Assante Towers in downtown Austin. All you armchair viewers should be glad you’re viewing this dedication in your warm living rooms. Today’s temperature is well below the freezing mark. A record breaker, ladies and gentlemen, but a nice way to start off the Christmas season. I’ll be switching you to Neal Tyler, my associate, in just a minute, but first I want to tell you a little bit about today’s groundbreaking ceremonies. Cary Assante, the creator of this architectural immensity, this city-within-a-city known as Miranda, will be cutting the ribbon shortly. I was told before airtime that a large crowd was not expected due to this record-breaking cold, but there must be a thousand people down there. Cary Assante is married to Amelia Coleman, and here in Texas, anything the Colemans are involved in is major news. This affair today, ladies and gentlemen, takes the spotlight away from the oil crisis that’s paralyzed our state for so long.

“The governor and the lieutenant governor are here, as well as the newly appointed mayor of Miranda. Yes, Miranda will have its own mayor, and even its own zip code. Senator Thad Kingsley of Vermont is in attendance with his beautiful wife, Billie, who was once married to Moss Coleman. Two of our own congressmen are here, and every socialite in the register is down there, all wearing their best furs. The Crystal City Band is down there, too, as well as the fire department and rescue squad.

“This is a wonderful turnout for Cary Assante, who worked more than ten years to complete this magnificent city within a city. KBT News will be taking you inside Assante Towers tonight for the gala opening in the grand ballroom. The color scheme for tonight’s festivities is red and silver, with over fifty thousand poinsettia plants flown here from San Diego. Special heaters were required for the planes and the trucks that transported the plants. It’s obvious that no expense was spared for this momentous occasion. And the crowd down below is loving it. This is Dave Harrison, reporting live from Miranda. Back to you, Neal.”

The Crystal City marching band swung into its third lusty rendition of “Deep in the Heart of Texas” as Cary Assante and local dignitaries mounted the beribboned dedication platform outside the Miranda Tourist and Information Center. The new mayor of Miranda drew himself up to his full six foot four inches. Thin streams of vapor escaped his pursed lips. He tried valiantly not to shiver in the record-breaking cold, but was failing miserably. His teeth chattered as he made his short speech, which was amplified by an echoing sound system.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is indeed a proud day for all of us. This marvelous state-of-the-art complex that has taken ten years and billions of dollars to build is your inner city. You who are privileged to live here will never have to stray outside these boundaries. The creators of this masterpiece have thought of everything. But I won’t keep you out in this cold or in suspense any longer—I suggest Mr. Assante cut the ribbon right now! I look forward to seeing you all this evening for the gala in Assante Towers. And now,” the mayor shouted, “the creator of Miranda, Mr. Cary Assante.”

Cary stepped forward, Amelia at his side. Her smile was brilliant and full of pride as she handed her husband the gold shears. “This is your moment, darling. Your dream is officially a reality.”

“Our dream, babe,” Cary whispered. His hand trembled as he cut the shimmering ribbon. He felt light-headed. All about him was a babble of congratulatory voices. The band members made a valiant effort to render still another chorus of “Deep in the Heart of Texas.”

Amelia stepped back. This was Cary’s time, and he deserved all the accolades. All she wanted was to find Billie and Thad and get inside, where it was warm.

Amelia Coleman Assante possessed the kind of beauty that comes only with maturity and being at peace with oneself. She was tall, but not as tall as her handsome husband. She carried her height with dignity and dressed to that dignity with carefully chosen designer clothes that masked a thinness that spoke of past health problems. Her soft gray eyes were almost translucent, a perfect complement to her hair, which was more silver now than chestnut. The fine lines around her eyes and the deeper creases alongside her nose spoke more of character than age, as did the light brown spots unsuccessfully covered with makeup. Perfectly white capped teeth, slightly yellowed now from medication and too much tea, nibbled on a thin lower lip to stop it from trembling with the cold. To those standing in the crowd who knew her, she was every bit as striking and commanding as she’d been in her earlier days.

Billie Coleman Kingsley hugged her sister-in-law. “He really did it, Amelia. I’m so proud. You must be about ready to burst!”

“I am. There were times, Billie, when I thought this was nothing more than a nightmare, but Cary can do whatever he sets his mind to.”

“What do you think, Senator Kingsley?”

Thad laughed. “What I think is, I’m glad I invested in this project.”

“That makes two of us,” said Amelia, smiling. “Without you we’d have run out of money years ago. By the way, where is Mr. Hasegawa? I want to thank him for coming all the way from Japan. He really isn’t well enough to be traveling. We also have to thank him for his investment. We really did it, thanks to the two of you.”

“Mr. Hasegawa is with Sawyer,” Billie said. “I thinks he’s taking him back to Sunbridge. He’s very tired after his long flight, and he isn’t feeling well. But he’ll be back tonight for the festivities.” Billie paused a moment, and when she spoke again, her voice was full of awe. “Amelia, I’ve never seen anything like this, and Thad and I have been all over the world.”

“You look tired, Amelia,” Thad said, his brow furrowing, his voice full of concern.

Amelia smiled. “Now, I don’t want to be fussed over,” she said. “I’m fine. The doctor says I’m fully recovered from the surgery. I just hate being cold. And before you can say it, I’m going upstairs and rest for tonight’s gala. I really am excited about the library dedication. It was Cary’s idea, you know, to dedicate it to Mam. The Jessica Coleman Library. What are you going to do?” Amelia asked Billie as she bussed her on the cheek.

“Corral the family and take the tour, like everyone else.” Billie watched as Amelia headed toward the gleaming bank of elevators.

“I’ll meet you by the jitney,” Thad called over his shoulder.

Instead of moving off through the crowds, Billie remained where she was, her thoughts on Amelia. She didn’t look well, and it was more than simple fatigue. Regardless of what she said, it was obvious that the heart bypass surgery had taken its toll. A brief, sharp spasm of worry overcame Billie. She and Amelia were more than sisters-in-law; they’d been intimate friends for over forty years.

Billie’d been so young when she met Amelia for the first time, only eighteen, and so very much in love with Amelia’s brother, Moss. She’d been scared, too, of Moss and Amelia’s father, Seth. What a tyrant he was. Amelia had confided in her, and in turn, she’d shared her life with Amelia. They were more like sisters than sisters-in-law, drawing together out of need, giving and accepting one another’s friendship, sharing triumphs and disappointments.

Forty years of memories leapfrogged through Billie’s mind. Accompanying Amelia to a back-street abortionist while she herself was secretly pregnant. Seth’s hatred of Amelia because she’d had the audacity to be born a female. Amelia consoling her when Seth treated her like a brood mare, demanding that she produce a son—an heir.

While the war raged in England and Amelia couldn’t return to the States in time for her mother’s funeral, Billie had stood in her place and prayed for Jessica, just as Amelia would have done.

And it was Amelia who encouraged her, after Moss’s death, to become a designer. Thanks to Amelia’s support and confidence, she’d started her own successful business, Billie Ltd., an enterprise that had netted her a seven-figure yearly income.

Until Amelia’s marriage to Cary Assante, Billie had felt she was the only one who truly understood Amelia. Amelia had survived her father’s hatred of her. She’d survived his bluster and his boasts that he had the United States government by the balls and someday they’d make him a very rich man. How she’d hated those boasts. She’d survived war-torn England, and although she lost her husband in that war, she gained a stepson and raised the boy at Sunbridge. Rand—who was now Billie’s son-in-law. How clos...

Still one of the best regency novels ever written!
By Heather B
Still one of the best regency period romance novels ever written....right up there with Whitney My Love....if you've not read this novel but read WML...and loved it...you've been living in the dark ages. Beatrice Small focuses too much on food....but you can easily skip that into PARADISE reading romance. I've read almost a thousand books...this one and WML still battle for first place. The best of the best of the BEST!

old book still a great read
By Renee Fizer
the book was amazing.the setting in Russia was just great, and and i loved the chemistry between Miranda and Jared.

Miranda Dunham has been raised on Wyndsong, an island off the coast on Connittucut , and along the way, came to believe that she would inherit Wyndsong when her father died. However, that is not the case, since she is female. A distant cousin, named Jared Dunham is set to inherit, and Miranda is devastated. Even more so when her father is accidently shot and killed or their way home from England. As it turns out, the ship belongs to none other then Jared, the cousin set to inherit. It's one of his men who, believing the older man had a gun, shot Miranda's father. With him dead, Jared is suddenly thrust into his inheritance much earlier then he'd hoped.

But, he's in love with Miranda, so his marries her. All goes well for a time, and then, like in all Bertrice Small's novels, adventure ensues! it's quite a read, very enjoyable. Taking you from Early 1800s England to Russia, and back again.

Fatima Prophecy, by Ray Stanford

In Fatima, Portugal in 1917, the Virgin Mary delivered a prophecy to a little girl. She shared it with the church hierarchy, but no public reading of it has ever been made. Years later, a psychic among a small group of Fatima devotees, channeled a series of revelations so alarming that the group understood why the Church never announced the words of the Fatima miracle. That channel was Ray Stanford, who works in the prophetic traditions of Edgar Cacye. His readings of the Marian Apparitions at Fatima--and at Beauraing, Garabandal, and Zeitoun--are now presented in their entirety. They involve the future of humanity as we know it.

A sincere attempt to interpret recent religious phenomena
By Largo
I was often around Ray Stanford in the 1970's when this book was being written, and was well aware that it was an attempt to comprehend the meaning of several apparitions which have had great and abiding impact on many people. I had no special interest in the subject, but was quite struck, when I first read the book, by the fact that many of the explanations offered by the Source were not necessarily those of Stanford himself. Further, the entire tone of the communication was in a voice quite different than the author's.

Attempts to understand religious phenomena clearly arouse deep and heartfelt passions in believers. To impugn the integrity of the author by calling him a charlatan and perpetuator of UFO conspiracy theories does him great disservice. When I knew him, Ray Stanford was exactly the opposite; he was an honest and sincere person who was not at all interested in self-aggrandizement.

People who are unstable and highly excitable should probably leave this book, and others like it, alone. Others, who are interested in understanding some of the more powerful spiritual phenomena of the past century, will probably find a good deal here worth considering. The photographs alone are well worth the price.

Keep this book on your shelf
By Barbara Ybarra
If you are a critical thinker and also a seeker of truth, please get a copy of this book and read it very slowly and very critically. Anything that you have heard about Ray Sanford after the writing of this book should not be applied to its contents. It makes no difference that the messages came across in the language of a yoga student. Read with an open mind. The Miracle of the Sun at Fatima was witnessed by thousands of people. The 3rd secret which Pope John Paul II said was a prediction of his attempted assasination was held back from the public for a reason. Do you really believe that a great secret like that would turn out to be that someone pulled a gun on the Pope? People are still not ready for the 3rd secret because we still live in fear. The message that came across in Ray Sanford's book is for us to live in love and not in fear. The Second Coming of the Christ Consciousness is perhaps just a little different from what you learned in church. A great Catholic theologian named Tielhard de Chardin would have loved to read this message that says that one day we will be one body of Christ, metaporically if not literally. Think about what raising your consciousness means. Give this message time to sink in.

Stanford Outlines Basic Truths of the Fatima Apparition!
By A Customer
I am a devout catholic and have completed much research on Fatima and other apparitions. Ray Stanford imparts the essential message of Fatima: the prideful, arrogant will of man must yield to the influence of Holy Love if it is to mitigate the chastisement, which is the Three Days of Darkness. This truth is repeated at Garabandal, Betania, Akita, Achill, Medjugore, Conyers and in Ohio. The Flame of Holy Love enkindling the Immaculate Heart of Mary is one of the purifying fires through which this generation will pass: The Warning or illumination of conscience. This is the fire of Mercy. The Fire of Justice will come as The Second Pentecost: The Great Miracle which coincides with unifying the Feast of Easter between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Chruches. The Chastisement comes afterwards. Its form and severity, Nuclear War or Cosmic Solar event, will be determined by whether or not the US sets the correct example for the world by outlawing abortion. Stanford's book makes an important yet challenging contribution to this topic. It deserves serious study.

Amazon.com Review
Although Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is justifiably famous as the creator of Tarzan of the Apes, that uprooted Englishman was not his only popular hero. Burroughs's first sale (in 1912) was A Princess of Mars, opening the floodgates to one of the must successful--and prolific--literary careers in history. This is a wonderful scientific romance that perhaps can be best described as early science fiction melded with an epic dose of romantic adventure. A Princess of Mars is the first adventure of John Carter, a Civil War veteran who unexpectedly find himself transplanted to the planet Mars. Yet this red planet is far more than a dusty, barren place; it's a fantasy world populated with giant green barbarians, beautiful maidens in distress, and weird flora and monstrous fauna the likes of which could only exist in the author's boundless imagination. Sheer escapism of the tallest order, the Martian novels are perfect entertainment for those who find Tarzan's fantastic adventures aren't, well, fantastic enough. Although this novel can stand alone, there are a total of 11 volumes in this classic series of otherworldly, swashbuckling adventure. --Stanley Wiater

From Library Journal
Burroughs's first published fiction was Under the Moons of Mars, a wild sf adventure about a man named John Carter who mysteriously finds himself on Mars. Later published in book form as A Princess of Mars (1917), it is arguably the most fun of the 11 Martian tales Burroughs eventually wrote, as almost everything in it is new and strange from the giant four-armed green Martians to the fantastic six-legged thoats. Tarzan may be Burroughs's most famous character, but his Mars stories are still widely read. With few audio versions of these works available, good unabridged recordings are sure to be in demand, so this is recommended for all fiction collections. However, if Blackstone plans further Mars recordings, it would be well advised to offer more energetic readings than that provided here by Dennis McKee, whose interpretations of Martian dialog sound too much like Tarzan introducing himself to Jane. GET THIS BOOK! Read the whole series!
By A Customer
John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, they are all here!
This is the totally unbelievable story of a man who got transported to Mars basically, because he thought it would be cool to go, so he wished it, and POOF, he's there. Then, there's the fact that the planet itself and the life on it are also completely ridiculous. FORGET ALL THAT! Read it to be swept up in one of the greatest adventure series of all time. John Carter goes to Barsoom (Mars, to the Martians) rescues the most beautiful woman in the universe and (later in the series) conquers an entire world through the power of his will and the strength of his right arm. Handsome, powerful heroes, beautiful half naked captive princesses just panting to be rescued, Villians, so evil you want to go back in time to strangle their parents, Big ugly friends, (What are you laughing at, remember Chewbacca?) strange beasts, stranger aliens, wierd science, epic battles, betrayals, great reunions. This one's got it all. The best of Burroughs' body of work, the most action packed series from the true master of the action story. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the creator of Tarzan. Don't ever pick up his work expecting an intellectual workout. Just get in and hang on for the ride

Imagination & Adventure!--WOW!..A must read!
By john larrabee
You want imagination?..adventure?..a few dabs of science(remember it was written in 1912)?..an ageless hero?..an absolutely beautiful damsel in distress?..a whole new world?..with a language all it's own?..inhabited with strange new creatures?.. friends and foes?..battles royal?..This book, and all 10 or 11 sequels, have it all! ER Burroughs was the early master of science fiction, adventure, and imagination; a man ahead of his time, and he gives the reader a roller-coaster ride of incredible adventures. Join with us now as John Carter meets, rescues, and captures the heart of the INCOMPARABLE Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars!, and eventually, along with his friend Tars Tarkas, follows suit with the entire red planet, Barsoom to its wild and whacky inhabitants.
Is this intellectual literature?..of course not. Is it non-stop fun and enjoyment, the original page-turner novel?...You bet it is! Pick this book up, start reading, and I guarantee: you won't put it down until you're finished!..and then you'll run out the door and be hunting for the 2nd book in the series, The Gods of Mars, and then # 3, The Warlord of Mars, and on through the series. Be warned: make sure you have access to #'s 2 and 3 before you start The Princess...you'll be sorry if you don't!
I first read the Burroughs Martian novels(there were 10 known to me then) as a graduate student studying Physics, some 40 years ago. They provided the perfect escape from the rigors of courses like Quantum Mechanics and E & M. Now I reread them, and I continue to enjoy. You will too.

Not just for guys!
By Fuchsia
Princess of Mars is a fantastic, wild ride. I think everyone makes a mistake though of saying it's just a guys book. I'm a woman, and it was my mother who recommended Princess to me! I think any girl who's interested in science fiction or fantasy would really enjoy this book. Yeah, it was obviously written with adolescent boys in mind but I think anyone can enjoy this wildly imaginative page turner.
The characters are all extremely likable. John Carter is the perfect southern gentleman. Honorable, loyal, incredibly brave, respectful to women, extremely handsome; a perfect hero who is never boorish or conceited. Then there's Sola, one of the few green Martians to show compassion and kindness, and Tars Tarkas(aren't these names so cool?)a ferocious green martian warrior with a tragic past who is also able to feel compassion and love. And I dare anybody to tell me that they wouldn't want a Woola of their very own! Dejah Thoris though is mainly for the guys. Carter's love and devotion for her was really sweet. I didn't even know that this was part of a book series until I read it on amazon and now I am really eager to read the other books of the series. And wasn't the end cool? I don't think I've ever read an ending quite like that before. What Carter found in the cave at the end was very creepy and intriguing. (I won't give out a spoiler)
Although this is pulp fiction and sort of like a comic book in a way,(I can see mothers in 1912 scolding their kids, "That Edgar Rice Burroughs is going to rot your mind if you keep reading it!") it's still light science fiction at it's best! (I'll warn you right off though, please don't expect something deep and complex like Dune or Darkover and post a review whining about it. Princess is purely for fun.) And am I the only one that thinks Princess would make a really awesome movie?
